The Story Behind ScriptureDoodle

Tells us a bit about your book—what inspired you to write it?

Our ScriptureDoodle books are 6-week devotionals merging creative art exercises with the word of God. I was inspired to write them because my heart is to help people draw closer to God through art, whether or not they feel equipped to do so.

What is the main message of your book?

We often say, “ScriptureDoodle is not about making a masterpiece it’s about worship.” Truly that statement encompasses the message of our books. ScriptureDoodle is for anyone willing to try. Even if you don’t come out of it painting the Mona Lisa, you will certainly gain a comfortability with weaving art and doodling into your quiet time with God.

What was the hardest part about writing nonfiction?

The hardest part for me was telling the story of God and making sure that the context of what I shared was in line with the truth of God’s word and His character. Sometimes we bend the scriptures to make them fit what we wish to hear, I wanted to be mindful of that as I wrote each devotion.

What is one thing you learned while writing ScriptureDoodle?

I learned that editors are amazing! My editor was a great sounding board as we sifted through the daily writings. She was quick to say which ones she thought would or wouldn’t work for our books. This process was key  because it ensured our book became a perfect mix between applicable teaching and do-able art exercises.

What are you working on next?

Right now we are working on creating a six-week video study to go along with both of our books. This will be a perfect resource for people wanting to experience our ScriptureDoodle books in a small group setting. We’ll have two different 6-week video series. One for each book!

What are your ideal conditions to facilitate creativity and reflection?

I find I’m most creative when I make some quiet space away from the bustle of my day . . . usually nap time or after my kids are off to bed. I like to light a candle and play worship music in the background.

If you could write in a different genre, which would you choose?

I would love to write a ScriptureDoodle devotional for kids. I think it would be a challenge for me as a writer, but it could be a great resource for families as they teach their children excited about the word of God.

What book have you reread the most?

The Circle Maker is one of favorites. I’ve highlighted and re-read pages in it over and over.

Do you have a go-to snack for quiet time?

I always like a cup of coffee or tea for my creative time with God. Every once in a while I dip my paintbrush in it by accident, which is a bummer.

What color do you reach for the most?

Believe it or not I don’t really have a favorite color, I love them all, if I had to choose it would probably be purple.

What is your favorite tool for devotional time (other than the Bible)?

I love using my watercolors for ScriptureDoodle, especially if I’m doing any brush lettering, it just looks so pretty on the page.

Favorite Bible verse:

So many to choose from! I love all of Psalm 91, it’s all about the protection of the Father over us. Such a great truth.

Would you rather spend an afternoon reading, painting, or baking?

Oh I would LOVE to spend the afternoon reading. Most afternoons I work, so the thought of snuggling up with a book and no responsibilities sounds just magical!
