Maya Angelou once said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” Where does a writer find inspiration? What’s the hardest part about writing a book? What do you hope your writing achieves? We asked Debra Clopton to tell us the story behind Kissed by a Cowboy. Keep reading to learn more about Debra’s latest release!
Tell us a bit about the story behind your latest novel. Where did you find inspiration?
I wanted it to be fun, but heartfelt. I had Jarrod’s character already because he’s been in the first two books in the series but I wanted to give him a story that would shake his life up in a good way. So I came up with Cassidy and her strawberry farm. I drew inspiration from research on strawberry and peach orchards…. but the run in with the snake came straight from my own close up experience with the awful creatures… I’m sorry if there are any snake lovers out there but I am not a fan and yes, I have done the snake dance! And I’ve also jumped on counters and I’ve run far, far away. Let’s just say that Texans meet snakes more than this girl likes.
What trait do you love most about your main character?
Her resilience. Even when she doesn’t think she has any does. Her life has been one hard knock after the other but she just keeps getting back up. I love that and know from my own experience that with God’s help you can be stronger than you ever thought possible.
When readers get to the last page, what do you hope they take away from the story?
The above answer… that strength comes sometimes just from the fact that you take that next step. And then you take another one. And with God’s help you can overcome anything… one day at a time.
What are you working on next?
I’m very excited that Dalton, the fifth book in my New Horizon Ranch series is coming out. Readers have been waiting on this story and I’m so glad to have it ready for them now. This series is shorter than my Four of Hearts Ranch romances but just as romantic and heart-warming. Dalton is a great story about a cowboy who keeps his past closed up inside but then one stormy night he rescues a very pregnant Rae Anne Tyson from floodwaters and suddenly Dalton’s life is turned upside down and no matter what he believes he does or doesn’t deserve—he can’t walk away from helping Rae Anne.
I’m working on a new series now that I’m excited to be working on and there will be news next month about it. I’d love for readers to join my newsletter at debraclopton.com.
