40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood: Devotions and Coloring Book to Nourish Mom (Abingdon Press, August 2016)

Nourishment for a mother’s soul through 40 days of devotion and . . . doodling!

Wouldn’t it be marvelous if mothering came with a concrete set of instructions—an easy recipe we could follow? Instead, motherhood challenges women to find their faith, their true selves, and their family through daily doses of trial and error. It is a brilliant and healing time of life that is full of joy, pain, and beauty with a small side of crisis (and humor). What mothers do not know, they learn. And through this lifelong process of learning, they nurture and care for the most precious gifts on earth: children. In a modern society where moms often have a full and busy plate, these 10 minute daily devotions focus on six key topics of motherhood:

—Self-acceptance
—Self-care
—Reconciling with grief, hope and expectations
—Generosity
—Presence
—Forgiveness

In addition to the devotions, these beautiful pages are adorned with handmade illustrations to help you refresh from long days or even occasional sleepless nights. So, grab your colors and a little quiet time for yourself while doodling at the kitchen table. You will be grateful you did!

  • Ever since my boys were born, I have struggled to find a quiet time that works for me during the day. For a while, I tried getting up early in the morning but that’s just not working at this point in time. At night, I am ready for sleep. ha! Each day it is work to find a time to myself. When Litfuse offered 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood: Devotions an Coloring Books to Nourish Mom by Sarah Humphrey, it sounded like the perfect devotional to help me focus some time each day to hear from the Lord. I have not worked my way through the entire devotional because it is intended for one a day and I have only had it for a week or so. However, I have done a few and so far, I really like this book.

  • I loved this hybrid devotional- coloring book!!!!You do not need a pristine, expensive, sharpened set of pencils to enjoys this coloring book. You can use blunt and broken crayons if you wish! Some of the coloring pages are full pictures while others are graphic designs and decorations incorporating biblical verses. There is a broad mix of coloring activities that will suit every style.

  • I really enjoyed the beautiful pictures this book has. You can use any kind of coloring utensils that you like to use for coloring.
I am glad that this book is here for mom’s. It helped me relax when I had a stressful day. Reading the devotionals and coloring was very calming to me.
I hope there will be more coloring books out there like this one. A job well done. Thank you.

  • I absolutely loved the devotionals & have been able to read them in between getting my older two girls doing their school work, & before I start working at my computer for the day. My only complaint about the coloring portion of the book is that the paper is so thin, and you will need to use colored pencils.

  • Raventhreads says:

Each major topic of the devotional is also sectioned off with a couple of pages of thoughts introducing them. The devotionals themselves are small and bite-sized, but each one is deep enough to have you thinking and reflecting on it throughout the day.

The drawings are sketchy and simple to color. They are mostly hearts, flowers and simple border doodles, and I found myself inspired to copy many of them in my travelers notebook and in my Bible.

  • In 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood, Sarah Humphrey has created a great source of refreshment and encouragement for mothers. I thoroughly enjoyed the insight and inspiration this book provided, as well as the joy it cultivated. 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is a lovely book and a wonderful gift to give yourself and others!

  • Adding scripture is a great way to nourish our souls which in effect will soothe our hearts and minds and make motherhood an enjoyable journey instead of a daunting task.

  • Although I haven’t completed an entire coloring page, I’ve used my colored pencils to adorn the pages while I mediate upon the devotion and prayer. At this season in my life, the section that’s most resonated with me is the one on ‘Reconciling with Grief, Hope and Expectations’.

  • Knowing how little time a new and seasoned mom has, and yet wanting to spend time in reflection and prayer, this little gem is really a great answer. A must have gift for any mom that you know.

  • Book Reviews says:

This is a perfect gift to give a mother. Truly, as a mother it is hard to find quiet time but this book might be just what a busy mother needs.

40 days of one page devotionals along with a page to color and sometimes embellish with your own additions of words or pictures.

  • 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood Devotions and Coloring book to nourish mom by Sarah Humphrey. This is a wonderful devotion & coloring book combo to either start your day or end you day with.

  • I like the graphics created for coloring. They are simple and not super-detailed, so they don’t require an intense amount of time. Instead they are relaxing and lovely.

  • The IE Mommy says:

40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is truly a joy to read and color and an inspiration that soothes and calms my heart.

  • IF you’re looking for a coloring book that could be colored with crayons, as opposed to smaller tipped colored pencils, this might be a decent choice for you. Maybe the point was to provide a quick little artistic page for those new moms to do while rocking a little one, in which case simple is better. For the average mother that is used to the gorgeous coloring books on the market these days, this one looks on the pitiful side.

  • Buzz4Mommies says:

I found this to be fun and inspirational! Each day walks you through a short devotional that will help you to refill on the word of God and His plans for you. Then you can let off some steam with a little creativity! I think this would make a great baby shower gift for those new Moms in your life! A great way to inspire them and show them love.

  • I loved this devotional! It was a timely addition to my shelf, since I just had my second child this year and am still learning to juggle two kids.;) I needed the reminders in this devotional. Two thumbs up!

  • The readings in this devotional are a little different – they are part inspiration and part “how-to”. In each section the author suggests an area of your life that may cause stress or take away your joy of motherhood, then she offers you ideas and suggestions to bring back your joy in motherhood.

  • While many of the devotional pieces helped me focus my day and intentions on Christ, I found the devotional about self acceptance and peace to be very helpful to my soul. I am looking forward to picking up a few more copies for some friends who would benefit from both the devotions and coloring pages.

  • I think that the title was a little misleading for the book. The book was mostly about early motherhood and how to deal with lack of sleep and making a new life with kids. I was looking for more uplifting information about any stage of motherhood. Just getting to the actual coloring and relaxation part was a little more involved then I expected. It is also specifically set up as one a day which is a lot for busy moms to get to done in a day. There were about 42 pictures to actually color through the book and many had words and other things on them that didn’t make them the relaxing picture to sit down and color. It wasn’t what I was looking for but it would be a better for new moms or devotional readers.

  • This precious coloring book provides encouragement to mommas through simple daily devotions. Just a few minutes a day spending time in this book will leave any momma-no matter what stage of motherhood she’s facing-refreshed, renewed, and refilled. This is a book that fulfills more than the child-like desire to color pretty pages-this book will bring hope, beauty, and joy to motherhood.

  • The author digs deep. Causing you, on day one, to look at yourself. At who you are. So often we are so focused on our kids, our family, that taking the time to stop, and focus on ourselves, not in a selfish way but in a way that God can minister to us.

  • This is a great devotional for moms who need to focus on self-care but find it hard to do so. It’s things like this that can keep us grounded and be the best for our families. The coloring pages are simple and the devotionals include scripture, application/suggestions for use, and a daily prayer. The idea of combining a stress relieving activity with a devotional was genius in my opinion!

  • I was super excited to open this book and begin reading – and the foreword was amazing!  It left me super excited to keep reading and dig deeper into the book – and the scripture behind it.

I was a little less excited after a week or so in, though.  While each devotion is based on scripture and there are prayers included, the devotions sound very new age-y.  There isn’t anything that is contradictory to scripture, but some of the wording reads like a self-help book to me.

On the flip side, I love the doodles.  With wide black lines, fun lettering, and creative doodles, they’re fun to color.

  • I am a gramma now, way past having small children at home, but I found this devotional/coloring book to be very relaxing and encouraging. I didn’t color all of the pages in the book as I know I will go back and spend more time coloring. I like the big illustrations, they weren’t super intricate and I enjoyed the simpleness of them.
This would be a great baby gift for that expectant mom you may know.
    Highly recommended!

  • Sarah Humphrey has created a charming devotional coloring book combo for mothers to enjoy. With motherly and scriptural inspiration in daily devotionals and coloring pages to go along with each devotional, this book is great for mothers to get away for a few minutes of quite study and coloring time. The devotionals will lift and inspire, while the delightful and fun coloring pages will allow for pondering time. I would recommend this to women and mothers.

  • To be honest, I’m not sure how you are supposed to be able to work with these. I can’t color and read at the same time, but maybe you color while you pray, or color while you think about the short devotion you read.

  • In the Pages says:

The layout is so simple – a devotion for 40 days with a coloring page opposite it.  For me, it’s perfect – I am not a doodler or artist so I love having it all created for me and all I need to do is add color and make it my own.

  • kcreatives says:

I love to letter. So any chance I have to be creative and have a quiet time – time to myself, meditating on God’s Word, reaping some of that grace that I so desperately need as a momma of littles – I crave that!
Thankful to Sarah to put together a book just for mommas – to learn of God’s grace, who they are, and what they need. He is so good to give us what we need!

  • I like the simplicity of the coloring pages, there is not a lot of detail in them that will take a long time to fill in. I was disappointed to see new-age wording in the devotions. Also there is too much self-care, self-time, self-whatever discussed for my liking. These last two items caused me not to get a lot out of the actual devotions.

  • 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is not only full of beautiful pictures to color and help you destress, but with each picture is a daily devotions. The best part about this book is that after you’ve colored it in completely, you can keep it and look back on it whenever you need those extra words of encouragement.

  • 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is such a fun, creative, relaxing devotional! It is unlike any devotional I’ve experienced, (and I’ve done a lot!) I loved the beautiful drawings that were fun to color. But don’t think that the author has skimmed on the devotional part. These devotions will speak straight to moms heart.

  • Delightful. This lovely color book is filled with devotions that will make you smile.
Each day begins with a scripture and a brief devotion to ponder followed by a prayer.

  • My Full Cup says:

I LOVE this book! It is a great way to nurture your soul while you create a little space for quiet contemplation of our GREAT God! He is so faithful to nourish our souls with His grace, His love and His very presence.

  • Onward says:

40 DAYS TO A JOYFUL MOTHERHOOD is a book that could make all the difference for the better in the reader’s life. It would make a good gift anytime of the year.

  • EmpowerMoms says:

I love that this book is a coloring book, but its not so detailed that I feel overwhelmed and the need to color each page. Because us busy moms have tons of time each day to color, right? 😉 I decided that I would only color a little bit of each page each day, and then in the future I can color more when I go back to reread sections.

Overall, I really like this book! As a busy mom of 2 boys I appreciate all the advice, taking the time for coloring, answering thought provoking questions, and reading daily scriptures.

  • I love the devotional part of this book. It starts with a Bible verse, then the devotional (which is all about motherhood), then ends with a prayer. Most of them also have a couple questions for thought at the end. But where this falls short for me is the coloring/doodling pages. They are waaaaaay too simple! So I would definitely recommend the book for the devotional part only but not because of coloring pages. It all depends on what you are looking for.

  • WORD Up! says:

The devotions in this book are sweet and the accompanying doodle pages can be fun to color and add your own personal touches.

  • I know from reading the introduction, and having a scripture on each page that this is a Christian devotional. Given that knowledge, I didn’t really like the ‘new age’ feel to some of the devotions. Discussing becoming a ‘higher version’ or ourselves, “releasing toxicity”, and “positive energy” for a few examples. It may just be how the author chooses to word things. She does mention God, and in each prayer at the end she mentions Jesus.

  • 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is a unique blend of thought provoking devotions and simple coloring pages. Sarah writes a combination of short daily devotions intermittent with longer sections about giving, forgiving, a mother’s worth, expectations and more. Each devotional consists of a introductory Scripture, Sarah’s shared wisdom on motherhood, thoughts or verses to meditate on and a simple prayer….

  • I’ve been waiting for a reason to purchase colored pencils, and with this coloring book, I found that reason! I have been doing motherhood for 25 yrs with four children. 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is a lovely way to take a few minutes for yourself in the early days of being a new mommy or even if you’re done with your day having run your kids here there an everywhere.

  • This book helps moms to focus on joy in all the ups and downs that life and parenthood sends our way. The devotionals are short and to the point, with a lot of truth, great lessons, reminders, and ideas packed into them.

  • I enjoyed that it could be a quick 10 minute quiet time or I could go deeper by looking up the included Bible passage and spend more like 30 minutes studying, meditating and coloring. I found that the pictures were simple enough to color and think about what I had just read. I also liked that there was extra space on the pages to write down thoughts, almost like a journal. I tend to write and doodle when I am thinking and this book provided me enough space to do just that.

  • More Of Him says:

What a beautiful way to spend your devotion time! This book has become a favorite of mine and as a Mom, I appreciate the emphasis on the importance of motherhood.

  • What a fun concept. The coloring or doodle pages are fun and charming. I like the idea of coloring while meditating on the thoughts and verses shared in the devotional for that day.

  • Onward says:

This is a book that can make a lot of difference for the better in a reader’s life. The devotions are organized and to the point. Great encouragement!

  • This was such a special treat to get. Who doesn’t love coloring and having a devotional all in the same book? The book is divided up into 40 days of refreshing, renewing and rejuvenating you as you color and read the Word. The pictures provided to color are simple yet inviting. They really just make you smile and are a great stress relief. I enjoyed the different topics each day and loved the scripture and simple prayer that accompanied it at the end.

  • Each of the coloring pages is fairly large and simple. This allows you to finish a picture during nap time or in small snatches of your day. It shouldn’t take you all week to complete a complicated picture with lots of small details. The pictures are full of flowers, hearts, curls and whimsy!

40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood can help any mother take time to focus on her relationship with God, and nurture herself.

  • Really enjoyed the coloring book! I liked that there were daily devotions to follow along with a page to express creativity. I would purchase something like this in the future!

  • The words and Bible verses in this book blessed my heart and the coloring pages were a sweet stress reliever. It would make a great gift for the mom who has everything!

  • 40 DAYS TO A JOYFUL MOTHERHOOD was inspiring, calming, and fun. Mixing a daily Christian devotional with a coloring page for each day to help mothers re-energize and bring joy into their lives. Perfect for those who love daily devotionals and some pondering time while coloring. Would also make a lovely gift.

  • The devotional coloring book is amazing! and may just a must have for all moms! We as moms, just some alone time to give ourselves a break. Being a mom is tough….it doesn’t come with a manual.

I have complete this devotion and coloring book and I need more! I loved spending my time reading my devotional of the day and getting some coloring time in. It was the perfect quiet time for myself.

  • 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood by Sarah Humphrey is the first coloring devotional I’ve done that focuses specifically on motherhood. The devotional section doesn’t take long – probably five minutes or so to read, pray and respond – so I do it in the morning. The coloring pages take longer and give me something to look forward to doing after the littles are in bed for the night.

40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood by Sarah Humphrey was enjoyable to read and color. I wasn’t on board with everything Humphrey said in the devotions, but I still liked it overall.

  • Overall, some good qualities and some that just didn’t impress me. Don’t just take my word for it. See what others have to say. I may just be an older mom with young kids. I just may look at it different than a new mom may.

  • The 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is a lovely, inspirational devotional, which seems best suited for young mothers, mothers with young children. Since I don’t have young children anymore, I focused on the segments near the end of the book.

  • 40 Days To A Joyful Motherhood is the perfect combination devotional and coloring book for mothers to turn to when they need some personal time! The devotions invite exploration and reflection into six key areas of motherhood and the beautiful large doodled images invite you to color and jot your innermost thoughts on their pages (with color pencils – the pages are rather thin!) A fun and unique devotional.

  • I was even more overjoyed when I found that Christian publishers were putting together coloring books. I liked the inspiring quotes and coordinating pictures to color much better than some of the psychedelic offerings at the big box stores. We really do process better when we are relaxed and coloring is supposed to enhance relaxation, so it makes sense to couple coloring with reflections about a daily devotion, then ending the brief quiet time with a simple prayer. And we all know that mothers, if they ever get quiet time, have only a few moments of it!!

  • You can’t go wrong with time alone with God in His Word and coloring to relax from a day filled with activity. Check out Sarah’s book you’ll find yourself carving out the time to spend alone every day.

  • Sean & Shey says:

Sarah Humphrey’s 40 Days to Joyful Motherhood is a beautiful and encouraging piece of art. Her words and the illustrations that accompany the daily devotions lend themselves to relaxation and meditation on the role of Motherhood which God has called us to.

  • I would not recommend this book. It is swings too far to the self-help/psychology view, instead of relying on God’s grace to get us through the tough season of having little ones. I did not agree with Sarah about the importance of names and how it relates to a person’s identity.

  • With devotions short enough for a 5-10 minute study period, it’s very approachable for busy moms. The doodles are varied and fun to color alone or with your children. Some doodles incorporate Scripture related to that day’s devotion, some a repeating design, and some leave room for your own doodling or hand-lettering.

  • I love the concept of this book. There is enough space around most of the devotionals so I could add some extra thoughts and scripture. The coloring pages weren’t super detailed, but were fun and had some space on some of them for additional writing. I’m a fan of adult coloring books and so the added devotionals were a definitely plus in my book. I would definitely recommend this book to all mothers and plan to purchase one for a gift as well.

  • As much as I love coloring, I must admit I cannot find the time to devote to it as much as I would like. But when I look inside this book, I don’t get that feeling of being overwhelmed by the details. The pages are beautifully illustrated, but not over the top…I look at them and I feel that I DO have time to color them, and isn’t the the point- to just take a few moments to yourself to reflect, be inspired and praise God?

  • I was super excited about this book because I love devotionals, art and I am a mom of 3 young kids. My favorite devotions talked about identity. I like the fact that Sarah brought topics to the surface to think about that I had not really given myself room or permission to ponder on. The prayers at the end are nice too. I would recommend this to my friends for sure!

  • Though there is a fair amount of coloring space, this book really does focus more on the devotionals. The coloring parts are more like doodles that just need to be colored in. It’s pleasantly distracting to have something to do with my hands when I need to do something more thoughtful with my brain. For example, the coloring would be simple to shade in while talking on the phone or even watching TV with the hubs.

  • What a fun way to have some creative quiet time with God! The devotional aspect itself would’ve made for a sweet book for mamas, but the coloring adds the opportunity for depth, growth, and a lengthier time of solitude. 40 Day to a Joyful Motherhood would definitely make for a fantastic Christmas gift!

  • I wanted this book because I need more Jesus in my life and I love adult coloring books. I thought the book was a great concept. You are encouraged each day and you have an image to color as well.

  • Through the Open Window says:

40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood: Devotions and Coloring Book to Nourish Mom (Abingdon Press, August 2016) Is a GREAT coloring book for moms. I have used this while waiting at Mr. B’s doctor visits, and while out of town staying at a bed and breakfast last month when I had to go for a wedding. I’ve used it to relax in the late evenings, and just for a boredom buster in general. I love the inspirational devotions included, and the artwork is beautiful! The spaces are easy to color in, and the pages are durable so you can shade and blend with ease. I love it!

  • Enter in 40 Days, this makes the calmness of the coloring and entering into reflection with the Lord easy to do since they are combined! In less than 10 minutes, or more depending on how fast you color, you’ll have delved into the Word all while taking care of you. The pictures are simple to color, no complicated abstract pictures here, they are simple but beautiful and correlate nicely to the day’s devotions. I know my day goes better when I have spent time with the Lord and His Word than when I don’t.

  • I absolutely loved this book. I have been wanting to try out one of these for a while. The devotions are short and to the point, so they are easily completed in less than 10 minutes, but you will still get the benefit of slowing down and having a quiet time.

  • Sarah is inviting mothers, whatever stage of motherhood they are in, to join in on finding healing and strength in spending alone and intimate time with Jesus.

  • 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood: Devotions and Coloring Book to Nourish Mom by Sarah Humphrey is filled with 10 minute snippets of friendly advice in the form of devotions, that can help you or someone you know navigate the sometimes placid and sometimes stormy waters of motherhood. Each devotional also has a facing coloring page, to give you some time to be creative, take a time out, or allow you to meditate on a truth you may have gleaned from the text. Each section also has an introduction, so I think this could easily be Eight Weeks to a Joyful Motherhood, if you read the introduction on the weekend, and then read the devotions on the weekdays.
