Who will you trust when dark waters rise?

Eagle’s Talon is an architectural marvel—shining residential units afloat in a protected cove of the gorgeous Rondeau River. The project is nearly complete, partially occupied, and ready to make investors rich when a sinkhole gives way. Then torrential rains and a flood leave a ragged collection of builders, investors, and residents stranded in one floating building, cut off from the rest of the world.

They’re bitterly divided over what to do next.

Architect Vance Nolan insists they should sit tight and wait for rescue. Developer Tony Dean wants to strike out into the darkness. And single mom Danielle Clement, desperate to protect her young son, Simeon, struggles to hold their motley band together.

Power failure, a pall of unnatural daytime darkness, explosions in the distance, then a murder ratchet tensions to a boiling point. But Danielle’s young son, Simeon, has spotted something strange underwater—beautiful, shifting lights in the dark water below.

In this watery world where everyone’s secrets will eventually come to light, salvation may mean more than just getting out alive.

Another stunning exploration of the human spirit and supernatural possibilities from best-selling author Erin Healy.

  • Afloat by Erin Healy is the latest book from this very talented author. A story that has all the fixings for an interesting story. A suspenseful tale of loyalty, faith and trust with a bit of the supernatural. I had a bit of a time at first, I think it was all the characters, I soon started to get into the feel of the story and enjoyed it. I love the way Erin Healy tells a story and the way she leaves the reader thinking after the last page is read. If you are looking for a good book to read and are not put off because it is Christian fiction, I would recommend you give this book a try.

  • Mary Shipman says:

This book is a real winner!
I read it recently, during a time of emotional stress and found that it took me away from what was bothering me.
As I followed the characters through their trials as a volcanic eruption creates a ‘perfect storm’, leaving them stranded for days in a building, I forgot my problems and focused on theirs.
    Truly a 5 – star read!

  • Afloat by Erin Healy is a nail biting thriller. Each character comes to life with her writing. It was a fantastic story and I loved it!

  • Buzz4Mommies says:

Wow! That is my first word after reading this book. This is a wonderfully unique and intriguing book. I have read another book by Erin Healy before so this time I was prepared for her very interesting combination of Christian supernatural fiction yet this was still a wonderful surprise. The author knows how to develop rich characters amid a tragedy. They were so real, flaws and all. Despite events that aren’t normal the characters seem so normal and real and yet all challenged in amazing ways.

  • Moments says:

Erin Healy’s latest novel, “Afloat,” is sure to be a winner as the story is gripping and filled with suspense that will keep you turning the pages from the start to the very last page. This is an intense read as it is a story of survival and conflicts, both internal and external. The characters are trying to survive, but are unsure of whom and what to place their trust in.

  • Erin Healy never disappoints me! Her characters and stories are always well written and developed, and draw me in quickly. This book also can make the reader think about topics like: selling out, compromise, faith, blindness, and truth. I really enjoyed the book and recommend it to readers who enjoy suspenseful novels.

  • Afloat is a very unique story! Not your typical suspense novel at all. Vance Nolan builds condominiums not on land but on the water. Not just any old condo either, these homes are build for people who have the means to pay for these luxurious homes.

Everything is going beautifully until a sinkhole strands some of the residents and workers. Then things radically change!

Filled with suspense and some unexpected twists and turns. Erin Healy combines both supernatural and the spiritual world to make for a very interesting story!

  • This is a Christian novel, published by a Christian publishing house, and there are discussions of faith, belief, love and other Christian elements throughout. Something that came to my mind while reading this novel was when Jesus told his disciples that whoever desired to save his life would lose it… The idea of waiting for a bird reminded me of Noah’s Ark. I also found certain elements reminded me of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None/Ten Little Indians. To say more about these and other plot developments would be to give away some major spoilers and I really don’t want to ruin it for you. I also wish I could say more about the supernatural elements of the book, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around them! Despite those, however, this was a book I had little trouble reading. Only once did I contemplate putting it down, and that’s because I had to go to bed.

  • Austenitis says:

Wow. In all seriousness, through most of this book, I had no clue what I was thinking of it. And no clue what was going to happen next. That being said, I was glued to it – hard to put down, easy to pick up. Erin is a splendid author, an excellent writer! The book was fascinating, and I recommend it especially for anyone who has enjoyed dystopian or futuristic fiction…

  • It’s kinda hard to really give words to my thoughts about this book but here goes! The storyline was definitely unique and interesting. The beginning was rather slow and I had a hard time getting into the story but as it progressed it got better. There were quite a few twists and turns along the way most of which I didn’t see coming. The characters were insanely diverse and they were well written. Vance was by far my favorite, I loved how he was always trying to do what was best for everyone with little to no thought to himself. Overall it was intriguing read but not one that I think I’ll read again.

  • Once again, Healy demonstrates her spot-on ability to write superbly crafted thrillers featuring real, complex, believable characters and wonderfully original, twisty plots. She’s particularly adept at crafting sympathetic main characters. And as with all of her other novels, Afloat provides satisfying turns in both plot and character development.

  • By The Book says:

Afloat is the third book I have read by Erin Healy. With her complex plots, emphasis on setting and well-drawn characters, she never disappoints. Afloat is another winner for this talented author. Not a quick or easy read, it is a book that will make you focus and think. Don’t pick this one up unless you have time to devote to becoming immersed in a riveting read. Afloat combines the best of disaster scenarios — upheaval of the natural world, fear and betrayal — with a supernatural element that makes the reader examine all the twists and turns of the plot. The pasts of the two main characters impact their present so much, causing them to doubt, yet strengthening their resolve at the same time. The setting of the book changes from peaceful haven to deadly foe within the space of a few days and keeps the characters off balance. The secondary characters are motivated by greed, fear, anger and self-preservation and impact the survival of them all. As I said, a complex read that makes the reader think.

Afloat is another great book by Erin Healy.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this story. And with the suspense and many twists and turns throughout the book, it was difficult to put down. And the cover is what drew me into the story, because with one look, you know something exciting is going to happen!

  • I didn’t want to stop reading this book. Forget eating. Forget sleeping. Nothing was as important as finishing this book.

  • WOW! I have read all of Erin Healy’s books except for one and I am continually amazed! Not only are they filled with spiritual insight and supernatural happenings, but the suspense and the emotion keeps me on the edge of my seat. Afloat does not let down… it is filled with mysterious happenings, angelic touches, human frailty, as well as God’s love and mercy. I couldn’t put the book down!!

Afloat has something for everyone. A little mystery, a little suspense, a little revenge and a lot of love.

  • A Book Lover says:

I thought this was an interesting book with an unique plot line that did not disappoint. The characters were believable and well developed. The plot was well written and drew me in and held my attention throughout the book. It is one of those books that when you finish you close it and are still thinking. I think the ending fit the story. I had hoped some of the characters would make better choices but the world is not perfect and does not tie up in nice neat bows. The spiritual/supernatural element was well done and I could not wait to see what happened next. If you like something a little different then you will love this author’s books.

  • I’ve read Erin Healy’s The Baker’s Wife and House of Mercy. Afloat probably comes in second to The Baker’s Wife, but certainly is not a disappointment! I love the way Healy developed her characters by giving us their back stories. She does this in a fluent manner that does not confuse the main story line. Although she delves into the supernatural element, her characters and stories are believable. This was a page turner you won’t want to miss!

  • I just finished Afloat by Erin Healy. After a slow start I really enjoyed this book! I was able to visualize the characters and the storms in the book. This book really makes you think about life and what happens after life. A great book, a great mystery as well!

  • Afloat by Erin Healy is an intriguing story about disaster and human nature. The book is full of twists and unusual turns. The story explores both the dark and redemptive sides of human nature. Characters must make choices that will impact the lives of those around them. Past choices come to light.

Overall, the book was good. At times, however, I found myself getting overwhelmed by the magnitude of the disaster. I would not classify this as a light read.

Simultaneously, I found myself intrigued by the things that Danielle’s young son, Simeon, saw under the water and by Ziggy, Zeke’s pit bull service dog – the one with an overwhelming fear of the water.

If you like Christian suspense novels that merge the everyday with a touch of the supernatural – check out Afloat.

  • If the cover of Afloat doesn’t catch your attention, you might want to check your pulse. I haven’t read Erin Healy’s books before, but I am starting with Afloat and I won’t finish until I’ve read them all. The story was so realistic and tangible that I could almost hear the water lapping against the boat, feel the cold wet clothes the characters wore in the first scene of the story. I’m not sure how she fit it all into a 350-page book, but she did. I wasn’t disappointed by Afloat and I don’t think you will be, either.

  • Afloat gives us a message that most of us can appreciate. That in the bad times, we are held up by a firm foundation that we cannot see. That sometimes things are more simple than we see. That sometimes bad things happen in order for good people to become better. Sometimes even bad people are shown the light. Healy does a good job with her characters and I enjoyed following Danielle’s growth as a person through this trial.

By the middle of the book, after we had a chance to understand the characters and how their thoughts and actions effected each other, the mystery and suspense picked up and the story moved faster for me. I felt this was the meat of the book and that the second half delivered the supernatural vibe, as well as the mystery that I had been waiting for.

  • I’ve read all of Erin’s books she has written, and this one is her best yet. There is suspense, sabotage, natural disaster, supernatural elements, good guys, and bad guys. I had read the description of the book and thought it sounded OK, but found the book much more interesting than I had expected from reading the description.

  • Tim's World says:

Although the book took a little while to grab my attention, once it did, it wouldn’t let go. With many twists and turns, the book will keep you guessing as Healy leads you to the satisfying conclusion.

Much like her former writing partner Ted Dekker, Healy is a master of using allegory, a great way to make a point without hitting someone over the head with your message. The supernatural and the spiritual meld seamlessly in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Afloat will leave you thinking about faith, trust, loyalty and honesty, among other things.

If you enjoy supernatural suspense stories told from a Christian perspective, you should give Afloat and Healy’s other works a try.

  • I’d say this book is a little suspense, a little story, a little supernatural, a little “dark”.

  • Plan to spend an afternoon lost in the pages of Afloat for there is so much more beneath the surface than what I have revealed. More characters, adventures, along with a good dose of hope will keep you turning the pages until you’re through. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself exclaiming to a friend that they have got to read this latest work of Erin Healy’s. I eagerly anticipate her next novel and sure hope it is soon!

  • A Wild ride from Start to Finish. Alittle of something for almost everyone, mystery, suspense and thriller.

  • Happy Four says:

Afloat is one of the most well written books I have read that stays with you long after the final page. A wonderful book that makes you truly reflect on your past, present and future and the possibilities of the unknown.

  • This is a book where you aren’t sure where it is going, but you can’t put it down! I ended up finishing it in 2 sittings, ONLY because I was too tired to do it in one! Like the weather, the plot twists and turns, providing new drama for the characters to overcome and to show their true selves and faith. It was a very interesting device- having been through Hurricane Katrina and no power for 21 days, and no media for 5 days, I could relate to how the characters have no idea of what is happening in the ‘outside’ world and how banding together is their best bet of survival. There are times when I think God sends natural disasters to test just that- our faith in him, each other and to strengthen those bonds. Another winner from Erin, you’ll want to read this one as soon as you can, as I’m sure movie rights will not be far behind!

  • WOW!!! Who wouldn’t love to live in a luxurious floating condominium??? The characters in Erin Healy’s AFLOAT, that’s who!!! Could not put this one down! Wonderfully mysterious cast of characters! Awesome page-turner! Fans of suspense, epic, natural disaster types….don’t miss AFLOAT!!!

  • The story unfolds in such a way that you’re constantly wondering what will happen next, and the supernatural element was fascinating. I especially enjoyed learning Vance’s backstory and how he was connected to Zeke.

  • I enjoyed Afloat, and getting to know the characters, some I really liked (Vance, Danielle, and especially Simeon), as well as those that I didn’t (Tony). As the action began the pages kept turning and kept me on my toes, guessing what would happen next. Who, if anyone was to blame for the crane accident, and what was the connection between these people?

  • You are really going to love this one!

  • I love books that have a lot of suspense, supernatural elements, a beautifully defined spiritual message about God, and what I really loved about this book was that it had intense moments of excitement and action and putting people in survival mode. I felt for Danielle the most, because, she had to make sure at all times that her son was safe, and then having to deal with two men, competing for her heart. Yikes!

  • Erin Healy’s Afloat (Thomas Nelson, 2013) is a complex, trippy book that kept me up turning the pages way past my bedtime.

  • I was quickly drawn into this story! I really enjoyed the characters and the trials they faced. As always I thought Erin wove a story that you do not want to put down!! Thoroughly enjoyed it!

  • I really liked how the author showed how God works behind the scenes, using His angels and his creation, to guide us and help us in our time of trouble. The character of Ranier Smith was especially intriguing and you knew that He was sent by God to help and warn people. He was an interesting character who shows up throughout the pages.

  • Cummins Life says:

Amazing! This was an action packed read filled with mystery, intrigue, supernatural, romance, and so much more! Healy has a true talent for character development – you will find yourself loving some and not others though! I was amazed at how she developed so many characters in such a short novel. I loved getting back history on many of the characters past and how that contributed to the present picture of who they had become, especially Vance. I was fascinated with his floating house design and his motivation and heart behind it. And who doesn’t love a good read that is redeeming? To prevent any spoilers I can safely say that you will find some plot twists and turns with unexpected surprises and I do not think you will be disappointed!

  • This book definitely starts out with a bang and makes you want to keep reading. It is not my normal choice for genres, but I was not at all disappointed and will look into more of Erin Healy’s books. There is drama, action, excitement and some romance all while touching on interesting topics like angels, life and death.

I recommend this book to anyone who already likes this kind of book, but I also recommend it to people who have never read this genre before. You will not be disappointed. This is not an easy book to put down as there continues to be twists and turns.

  • Afloat is a delicious combination of mystery, suspense and survival. I loved not being able to anticipate what was going to happen next in the story. Perfect for summer vacation!

  • This is now my third book from Erin and once again she manages to captivate me right from the beginning. I was turning pages and trying to follow along while making my own guesses on what exactly was going on. There is a supernatural twist to this one that really makes you wonder about the people who come into our lives in unexpected ways and the ending is one that has you completely on the edge of your seat. I’d rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and know that I will most certainly add Erin Healy to my Must Watch List.

  • Pros: This book had a really good idea and it started out strong. I really liked the idea of a condo built on the water. I am a huge water person so, that just sounded like a great place to live. Simeon is certain he saw something in the water below, Danielle doesn’t even want to entertain it.

  • Crazed Mind says:

Finally I have a book that is not a romance or an Amish story line. Not that I do not like them too but I love mystery and suspense. I have just that and more in ‘afloat’ by Erin Healy. She has written a book that not only draws you in but it also makes your mind explode with questions as to what is going to happen next. You have a lil bit of everything here, including supernatural, but it goes together like a well played film. You know the kind of movie that has you sitting in your seats well past the credits playing. Now I am hungry for Erin’s other book.

  • I almost didn’t want to read it at night, but then I am not really friends with the water so it creeped me out even more. If you are looking for a suspenseful yet thoughtful book, check this one out.

  • Erin Healy has again crafted a masterpiece, a novel of suspense and supernatural wonder, where nothing is as it seems….As my mind mulls over its message, I find that it is really written with depth, a reminder to us all that each of us is afloat, utterly lost, except where God intervenes and reaches out his hand and offers salvation through nail-scarred hands.

I walk away from this book with a deep appreciation for Erin Healy’s skill in creating such a compelling read.

  • Afloat is a page-turning suspense novel that will have your attention from the very first pages. You will meet some intriguing characters, feel like you are experiencing each scene yourself due to the impeccable writing style of Healy, and love the several subplots that are included.

  • The main characters were very likeable and real. I loved Tony and Danielle. And even though Vance was a jerk, he was a very believable jerk!

  • Afloat is a complex tale of human emotion that links directly into the power of spirituality. For Vance, the catastrophe brings a flood of early childhood memories while others try to figure out how to survive at any cost, human or emotional. Each character is faced with physical, emotional, and spiritual danger; however, it is faith in God that helps those who survive find strength.

  • Ms. Healy’s previous work with Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti really shows in this novel. While the supernatural elements may not appeal to all readers, it pumped up an otherwise run-of-the-mill disaster thriller storyline for me. It would have been nice if all of the storylines had been finished as this novel does not sound as though it will have a sequel, and somehow the ending fell a little flat for me, but it was still good. The history shared by Vance and Zeke was interesting, and was told in flashbacks very nicely. I must admit that I did not see the revelation discovered by Danielle coming; that was a nice touch.

Overall, a gripping story that I could not put down.

  • This is an awesome book, with enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters are so different that they actually fit well together! Well written, fast paced, eerie…you’ll love it! 5 out of 5 stars!!

  • “Afloat” is most definitely a thriller and, I would say, Ms. Healy’s best work to date. Be prepared to have your nerves stretched!

  • “Afloat” is a somewhat dark tale about the residents and workers of a floating apartment community who become isolated from the rest of the world due to the simultaneous sabotage of the complex and a monumental natural disaster. With supernatural elements thrown in for good measure, the story is one that will hold the interest of most readers and leave them with points to ponder.

  • Erin never ceases to amaze me; her flawless writing and intricate weaving of the physical with the spiritual always keeps me coming back for more. My brain gets a workout with every novel of hers that I read and there is always an application to my spiritual life as well. Afloat was no different. I enjoyed every page of it, but I do have to say that this novel was harder for me to find the meaning in….

Head to my blog to read the rest of my thoughts 🙂

  • Afloat is a story out of my normally read genre, so keep that in mind. For this reviewer, the story dragged in the beginning–so many terrible events happening–but the writing is solid, with good imagery, and Tony and Danielle are very likable characters. The ending was excellent–better than I thought it would be. Very nicely brought together to tie up the spiritual and supernatural/thriller elements.

  • It is rare that I find a book that engrosses me so deeply that I shirk tasks that need to be done, keep reading even though I am exhausted, and ignore my hungry stomach. It is often said that an exciting book is a “page-turner.” Afloat by Erin Healy truly is a page-turner. The book grabbed me before I got to page 15 and the suspense just continued to build, right to the end of the book.

  • Erin Healy is no stranger to this type of writing. She has well rounded characters and a plot that seems to take on a life of its own very quickly. Before long you are entrapped in the suspense and mystery of the cove and the supernatural happenings that have taken everyone by surprise. This book blends supernatural and spiritual to provide entertainment that is thought provoking to say the least.

  • Erin Healy has constructed a unique reading experience in her latest novel, afloat. Prepare your heart and mind for the wildest ride imaginable, because that’s exactly the journey you are about to take! The elements of suspense abound in this novel, and the good guys and bad guys seem pretty clearly defined at first. Once the sinkhole opens up, it is as if the entire world sort of comes apart at the seams. Then the line between good guys and bad guys blurs and you can’t be sure who to trust!

  • What a visually interesting story! This story takes you on site to a unique island construction project where an unimaginable accident happens. You’ll meet an array of interesting characters and follow their stories as they work together to try to survive the accident. This is a great read that’ll keep your interest throughout as you find out the truth behind each character- and who survives!

  • Erin Healy’s books always have a unique aspect to them. She often writes of the supernatural world, including angels, visions, and God’s power. This novel has an extremely original setting, a character who receives visions, and an angel delivering messages and helping when needed. It kept me extremely engaged. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Afloat as well as Healy’s other books.

  • Afloat is an awesome story. The story is very deep and there is so much more there than meets the eye. Erin Healy weaves a tale of redemption, forgiveness, love, loss, and the supernatural powers around us. The characters are well written and very deep. Erin Healy paints a vivid picture of the days this group is trapped together and the different ways people react to these circumstances. As I read this story I truly felt like I was there with them experiencing this world.

  • Kerrific says:

The story led me to wonder what I would do if some sort of disaster destroyed all that I hold dear and I was left in an unknown territory trying to find the way for myself and my family. This is a good book that will leave you thinking! Don’t miss it!

  • I love books concerning scary mysteries. This book made me read it straight through…I literally couldn’t put it down. This book is filled with disasters-everything from sinkholes to mysterious presences that are both dangerous and benevolent depending on who the character is. As people struggle to survive in the midst of these problems secrets emerge that affect the group as a whole. The reader will find him/herself glued to the pages as the secrets unfold.

I really loved the plot of this story. Some readers (like myself) may find the book initially confusing, but it soon becomes easier to read as the backstories clarify themselves. I didn’t like all of the characters, but I wasn’t necessarily supposed to. Many readers will find themselves torn between the two love interests. It was easy to get caught up in Danielle’s life. I really wanted to slide in to the story and make the decision for her. Overall, this book is ideal for adult readers.
