The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and Ministries

The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and Ministries (New Growth Press, August 2017)

Churches have always sought to be a safe haven for children and families, but many today are dealing with the tragic reality of child sexual abuse.

This handbook, authored and edited by a multidisciplinary team of child abuse experts, is designed for use by a group that will be formulating policies and procedures to protect children and deal with possible child abuse in their ministry, school, and/or church. Working through this book will assist churches and ministries to assess their current child abuse polices and then guide them through each step they need to take to address the safety of children under their care. It will cover vitally important topics including:

—Protecting the children in a Christian environment from child abuse
—The warning signs of child abuse
—Crafting and implement a child protection policy
—Responding to abuse allegations
—Caring for victims of child abuse
—The legal implications and requirements for churches and Christian ministries

Written by a GRACE team with multi-disciplinary knowledge, headed by Boz Tchividjian, a lawyer and former child abuse prosecutor, this handbook will be an invaluable resource to Christians who are seeking to educate themselves and others about child abuse and how to best protect the little ones under their care.

  • The days when no one worried about leaving their child – infant, toddler, preschooler – in a church nursery or taking their older children and leaving them in a Sunday School class are forever gone.

When my children were small, we didn’t utilize the nursery but we kept our children with us in church – and they behaved. We did leave them in Sunday School classes and evening activities appropriate for their age. We trusted those with whom we entrusted our beloved children. That can not be taken today to be a certainty.

  • Every church and faith-based ministry needs to have this book in their library.  It needs to be read and used so that our children and youth can be protected and members and guests can feel comfortable leaving their children in the care of ministry workers and volunteers.

  • I first feel like it is terrible to even have to have books about this, however the subject is very real and the need to protect our children is high. Abuse is so common within the ministry system and many are either not prepared or have no idea, so this is a great resource to bring everything to light.

  • Because we understand the great responsibility of protecting our children and because of the unavoidable dangers in our world, The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide is needed, now more than ever. This well organized and detailed guide can be used alone or in conjunction with GRACE’s Child Safeguarding Certification. This book holds everything a church staff needs to understand the need, train volunteers, and implement policies that will help a church body protect and love children.

  • Having been in a church where child sexual abuse happened because the proper precautions were not in place, I know the need for good policy and adequate implementation. The organization behind this book wants to empower Christian communities to recognize, prevent, and respond to child abuse.
After the abuse in my church, we went through the long and difficult process of writing and implementing policy protecting children. I wish we’d had this book. It would have made the process easier and I think the result would have been a better document.

  • As Protestants, we tend to think of sex abuse cases as something that doesn’t happen to our people. But it does. To 20% of us. This book is an enormous help in learning to spot the signs and respond well. Every church should have this, read it carefully, and use it to form their own policy documents. Can’t recommend this book highly enough.

  • The care and comprehensive treatment of child protection laid out in this book floored me. Although protecting children from abuse is slowly being talked about more, it is still far from the norm. This policy guide is brave, bold, and needed.

In addition to the step by step plan to developing a church policy of protection and implementation in this guide (complete with worksheets and sample policy language), I appreciate the inclusion of chapters on ministering to and supporting abuse survivors. This is something sorely lacking in many churches too.

  • Just thinking about this book having to be wrote is very sad to me. One, children are a gift from God. Two, churches are a place of safety. This is a very sad book to read but, I am very thankful for the authors taking the time to write it and help churches and ministries. It is much needed and to have it on hand is a blessing.

  • The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide For Churches And Ministries is a book that every pastor, ministry leader, church administrator and parent should read!

  • This is an excellent resource for churches and those who work in a ministry position.

  • Moments says:

Sadly, the world that we are currently living in and raising our children in has led to the need for this book.  Church and ministries should be a safe haven and a place where everyone feels safe and protected, but that is no longer the case for many.  The GRACE organization has does a great job with putting together this book for church leaders to refer to and be sure that there are policies in place to protect our children.  Divided into 5 sections, this book contains a wealth of information.

  • The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide for Churches and Ministries by Basyle Tchividjian and Shira M Berkovits is an unfortunate resource our churches and ministries need. This guide trains churches and ministries to protect from, prevent against, and rightly respond to child sexual abuse. I plan on encouraging our church to work through this timely guide and I challenge you to encourage your church or ministry to do the same!

  • This book provides an excellent resource for churches to use when developing polices and guidelines. Highly practical and including specific action plans, this book is a must-read for any pastor, preschool or children’s minister, or anyone who oversees programs for children in churches and Christian ministries. Don’t delay taking steps to protect the little ones within your care. Get your copy of The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide for Churches and Ministries today!

  • As a pastor, that makes The Child Safeguarding Policy Book essential reading for churches and their leaders. It will help congregations and ministries understand the role we play in literally saving lives from the hell of abuse. I cannot recommend this book too highly!

  • How should we keep kids and teens safe? Where do we even start? I highly recommend a book I just finished reading, “The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and Ministries”. Yeah I know, it’s a super dry title, but if you are in any way concerned with child and/or teen safety, you need to get this in your hands.

  • Key component in a system of resources on child sexual abuse for policy makers, survivors, and advocates.

How will our church serve those who’ve suffered the harm of childhood sexual abuse, and seek to prevent it from happening to others? On this difficult but foundational issue of human dignity and care, will we choose conscience and compassion – or corrosion and complacency? The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide and the range of other resources from GRACE equip us with clear definitions, well-organized knowledge, and practical skills to follow a right and righteous path on these global problems of violence and abuse.

  • Having been through the training for adults working in children’s ministries, I found this book covers each topic related to the policy and practice thoroughly with easy to understand narrative and case studies. The sample forms easily delineate what each is for and why it exists. As a former teacher, mom, grandma, camp kitchen coordinator and counselor, I found this book extremely helpful and thorough in helping a ministry make sure they are in compliance with the law. I highly recommend the book and commend the authors for addressing this difficult topic in a kind and compassionate way.

  • While I am saddened that a book like this exists I am thankful that the authors have taken the time to provide such a thorough tool that will certainly prove beneficial to churches for years. This is definitely a book that should be in every church library for its leaders to read.

  • From the moment I discovered I was expecting my firstborn, I knew that my main responsibility was to do whatever I had to, to protect my children. I haven’t done that perfectly, but I’ve done my best.

The Child Safeguarding Policy is a useful resource for churches to fulfill their duty to protect children within their congregations. I highly recommend it.

  • I would highly recommend this to each and every church. If you’re a parent then give a copy to your pastor.

  • I highly recommend to everyone to read this book.

  • Sexual abuse of children isn’t something we want to think about, but it is certainly something that churches and ministry organizations need to be prepared for and have a policy in place. In fact, it is essential. The introduction mentions a woman who, when looking for a church home, asked the churches she visited about their sexual abuse policy – and if they didn’t have one, she moved on. I hate to admit that this is something I would never have thought of – and, while I suspect my church has some type of policy, I don’t know for sure. I will be giving my copy of this book to our elders and recommending it to other churches. Highly recommended.

  • I had several reasons for choosing to read this book: I’m the Nursery Coordinator at a church whose Sunday weekly attendance is just under 3,000; my husband is also on staff as the Small Groups Pastor; we lead a small group and I’m sometimes involved in Biblical counseling sessions; and, above all else, I’m a mother of six–with 3 of my children being adopted out of foster care. Because of these various roles, child safety as well as an awareness of how to help adults who suffered child abuse are quite important to me.

  • This is a wonderful resource for all pastors and children’s pastors to help them understand how to help those who are victims of abused or those who are healing from past trauma. This is an invaluable resource that is a great tool to help educate the church and guide staff through understanding how to keep children safe.

  • As a pastor and a parent of young children, I’m thankful for resources such as The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and Ministries.

  • While no one enjoys reading about or discussing child abuse, this is an extremely needful and necessary guide for all ministries. It reminded me of the old quote “The easiest way to stay out of trouble is to shine a bright light on everything you do.”. Implementing clear and concise policies such as these that everyone knows about not only provides accountability and transparency for the ministry, it allows parents, children, and families to be safe and enjoy going to church without worry.

  • This is a book that EVERY church needs to read and TAKE ACTION with. The safety of our children should never be taken lightly.

  • This book is a wealth of knowledge, with policies, procedures, and forms filling up the pages.

  • As a parent and youth leader this boo is an absolute essential for anyone who has children or works with children. This book addresses a really hard issue, abuse in the church but provides safeguards and ways to prevent that from ever happening. Filled with well thought out advice and insight this book is very thought provoking and helpful to prevent anything from happening. Hard to read for sure but essential.

  • “The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide for Churches and Ministries” is a toolkit work. What I mean is that this is not just a book that one reads from the front to the back and files it away. This is a book that you give out to your team and read together, then you earmark pages, use it to help guide and create safe policies etc.

  • The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and Ministries. A great book for Churches and your groups to use. Great resource

  • The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide for Churches and Ministries by Basyle Tchividjian and Shira M. Berkovits is a great book that all ministries should have on their shelves. The regular, everyday Christian might not find it useful in daily life; however, as a mother of two young boys I probably don’t have to state the fact that safety is a high priority for our family. Being a military family means moving often. When we move to a new duty station we have to start all over in finding a church that we are comfortable having our children attend. I can say that I would be much more comfortable at a church knowing that they had these policies and procedures in place.

  • Noveltea says:

Although this book wasn’t fun to read, and it contained a lot of sadness, it was also enlightening and despite the skimming, I learned from it. Overall I’m thankful I read the book, although I don’t really recommend it to people who aren’t actively helping lead a church or ministry. For the intended audience though? Yes, I would recommend it.

  • I have read this book from cover to cover and I can tell you, from a survivor’s perspective, this is what is needed for those within the church to use as a “bible” for better protecting kids. I don’t mean that as hyperbole, that comes from my heart.

  • This book is thorough in its scope and treatment of this timely topic. The authors outline behaviors and attitudes that indicate a child might be being abused. They also discuss characteristics of abusers to be on the alert for. I was especially interested in the reasoning behind the strength with which even seemingly small infractions to a church’s or ministry’s policy should be dealt. Enforcement of the policy is the responsibility of the entire congregation, so everyone must know and understand the policy. The Policy Guide gives thoughtful information on supporting survivors of abuse, both in the short and long-term. This book would benefit ministries planning a policy and those reviewing their policy.
