Claiming Mariah

After her father’s death, Mariah Malone sends a letter that will forever alter the lives of her family. When Slade Donovan, strong willed and eager for vengeance, shows up on her front porch, Mariah is not ready to hear his truths: her father’s farm, the only home she’s ever known, was bought with stolen gold. With Slade ready to collect his father’s rightful claim and force Mariah and her family out on the streets, Mariah must turn to God for guidance. Though Mr. Frederick Cooper, a local landowner, promises to answer her financial woes if she agrees to be his bride, Mariah finds herself drawn instead to the angry young man demanding her home.

With the ranch now under Slade’s careful eye, he unearths more than he ever imagined as a devious plot of thievery, betrayal, and murder threatens the well-being of the ranch, endangering those who hold it dear. As the days dwindle until the rest of the Donovan clan arrives at the Lazy M ranch, Mariah and Slade must rise above the resentment of their fathers and see their true feelings before greed changes their futures forever.

I love books where I know from page one that the book’s going to be a great read. This was one of those. I read this book while suffering with a massive case of allergies, and even though I spent the majority of the time wanting to claw my face off, I enjoyed the story. That’s saying a lot! 🙂

“Claiming Mariah” is one of those books that makes you wish you had a few uninterrupted hours to curl away somewhere and just read. I liked the characters and thought they were easy to sympathize with. For some reason, I loved Mariah’s grandma in particular. The familial structure in this novel–with Mariah, her grandma, and her sister who spends the book off in Philadelphia–was a little different, which I enjoyed.

  • I am in love. Seriously. This was a wonderful book. Well written and an easy read. I loved getting to know Slade and Mariah, though I would have loved to meet Mariah’s sister as well. I was catching on to who Frederick Cooper was and what his role was but the ending was still a bit of a shock to me as well. Definitely a great read and one you won’t want to put down! Get a copy and read it, then pass it on. This is one of those books that you just can’t resists. And I’m hoping that the author can’t resist writing more! Claiming Mariah is definitely up on my list of wonderful reads.

  • Pam Hillman is a beloved writer that has created a masterpiece!

  • One of my very favorite Scripture is Romans 8:28–“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.”
I think this story reveals this Scripture in such a beautiful way!
Claiming Mariah is a WONDERFUL READ! I highly recommend it to any and all!

  • Hey Internet, I just finished reading Claiming Mariah, by Pam Hillman and I have to tell you, I fell in love with both Mariah, AND Slade. Pam Hillman, the author did a marvelous job in creating the storyline of Mariah whose father had a share in a gold mine, but ended up putting a bullet in Slade’s father. He ended up being a drunk which eventually killed him. Leaving Slade to care for his family at a very tender age. Slade obviously had some deep-seated grievances. You have to get this book to read it! I so adore it.

I give Claiming Mariah a high 5 stars! I love how the storyline plays out between Slade and Mariah. I loved Jimmy, and of course Buck. The tender moments, I can picture in my mind what it must have been like. The author just gives so much detail. She paints the picture for your mind. I whole-heartily recommend this book to you, my readers.

Claiming Mariah was a fun read with a little bit of everything. I never got bored or tired of reading this one and felt like I went on my own wild west adventure! Definite page turner.

  • A touching story about truth and forgiveness, Claiming Mariah is a very enjoyable historical romance. I enjoyed getting to know both Slade and Mariah and watching their relationship develop throughout the novel. But my favorite character was Buck, Slade’s younger brother. He was such a gentile, wounded soul, and I would have loved to spend more time with him.

  • Claiming Mariah has a clever title and story line with Slade coming to claim Mariah’s land but ends up claiming her heart instead!

This book is not the most original in story line or historically educating but it was written well and I did enjoy it from start to finish watching Mariah and Slade fight their attraction but in the end accepting God’s will for their lives!

If you love a good ole’ love story, check out Claiming Mariah!

  • Author Pam Hillman has written a novel that has it all. Claiming Mariah has romance, suspense, and a strong faith that everything will be okay. Family devotion and loyalty shine through. I really enjoyed third book and I happily recommend it.

  • As you open the cover of Pam Hillman’s new book, you are drawn in, a compelling page turning and fast read.

  • Claiming Mariah is a fun western full of cows, adventure, and cowboys! It reminded me a bit of Romeo and Juliet…not the depressing everyone dies sort of way…far from that. It was in the feuding families aspect. The anger and bitterness of one generation can be passed down to the next so easily and the truth of the feud can get a bit jumbled in the mix. If there isn’t any willingness for forgiveness, the ability to move on from the fight will never happen.

  • This book is so good that I couldn’t put it down! It drew me in right from the beginning, with a fast paced plot that kept me hooked. I loved the Wyoming setting, and the wonderful characters who found a place in my heart. Definitely a book I will be adding to my favorites shelf.

  • Veronica's 'Views says:

I like that the salvation message is clear and that it’s emphasized how important prayer is. The romance is wonderful with plenty of romantic moments. The story is well-written and keeps up a good pace.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!!! :)…Pam’s writing is great as she keeps you going wondering what’s gonna happen next! I LOVE all the characters from Mariah and Slade to Mariah’s grandmother, Slade’s brother, and Cookie the bunk house cook!!! The messages of bitterness and forgiveness weave through the plot gracefully as these characters face loosing far more than just a ranch….This has made it to My Favorite Books list and I highly recommend it.

  • WORD Up! says:

“Claiming Mariah” by Pam Hillman is an engaging historical western romance. With a solid plot and likable characters, this book is an enjoyable weekend read. There were a couple of moments where a character’s inner monologue seemed to come out of left field just to create more conflict, but overall this is a good book – romantic and suspenseful with a thread of godliness woven throughout.

  • “Claiming Mariah” contains all the elements I look for in a good historical western romance novel including cowboys, plenty of action, conflict, a bit of mystery, and of course, romance. I liked the premise of the story which had a strong, somewhat angry man on a mission to take back the ranch he believes rightfully belongs to his family. He just doesn’t expect to have second thoughts about how it will affect the current occupants.

  • And while Pam Hillman turned out to be no Mary Connealy, she did write an interesting story. I enjoyed it a lot! I personally think that Slade was the best part of it. He has a gruff exterior partnered with a great disdain for Mariah and her family, but underneath was hidden a compassionate heart that just needed a little bit of nurturing to be brought to it’s full potential. I also liked Mariah’s character. She is a strong person, but she knows when to toss in the towel.

  • It was fun to see how these two characters interacted, their initial impressions, and then how those impressions and their relationship changed. What was also great was how much the other characters added to the story. I loved Mariah’s grandmother, Slade’s brother Buck, and little Jim.

I would recommend Claiming Mariah to those who enjoy Christian Romance or Historical Romance. This was a very enjoyable read!

  • Claiming Mariah is an adventure-romance in the best sense of the word: Slade and Mariah encounter fistfights and rustlers, drunks and the hungry children – all while navigating the path to true love. That’s exactly what makes this book such a fascinating read: because while you can see early on just how well they might belong together, there are just so many obstacles in their path and you can’t imagine how they might make their paths blend permanently.

So, looking for a good historical-romance? I definitely recommend Claiming Mariah.

  • Moments says:

“Claiming Mariah” is a sweet romance by Pam Hillman which is filled with secrets, suspense and love. Pam dives right into the story and action on the very first page with the two Donovan brothers showing up at Mariah’s home to claim the ranch as theirs due to the past between their fathers. Mariah has been living on her family’s ranch with her grandmother and she cannot believe the truth; however Mariah is concerned of her father’s reputation and carrying for her grandmother and sister.

  • …I rather enjoyed the tale of Mariah, Slade and even the shady fellas involved (made for some good villains). Hillman paints a vivid picture of the west, of what ranching looked like, small town life and how very different it was back then. It’s a sweet story with a beautiful message. A message of forgiveness, second chances and love. Life deals us all kinds of hands, but that doesn’t mean life still can’t be beautiful…

  • I love how Pam wrote this story from the hearts and perspectives of both Mariah and Slade. Mariah’s faith keeps her strong in spite of the circumstances that threaten to leave her homeless and with nothing, while Slade keeps fighting the faith that Mariah has to keep God out for the unanswered prayers he had as a child. He loves what he sees in Mariah but can’t see past his own hard heart for the answers to peace and happiness. Where as his brother Buck who is facing his own challenging odds keeps God in perspective and realizes that nothing that happens is God’s fault. It will take an act of faith to bring Slade around. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars! Pam Hillman is now one of my must have authors! I am completely addicted to her western novels.

  • Claiming Mariah brings to life the best and the worst of a wild west, a lawless epoch where a man and a woman defined riches through the land they owned and fought to defend it and their loved ones no matter the cost!

  • WV Stitcher says:

Wyoming during the spring of 1882 is where readers will find themselves transported as they read Claiming Mariah by Pam Hillman. A story where the author’s descriptive writing captures the feel of the old west while providing an intricately woven story that captured my imagination from the beginning paragraphs. I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen with Mariah Malone.

  • What an amazing story! Claiming Mariah is the perfect blend of plot, characters, and setting. Pam Hillman’s talent lies in her writing style, which made the story come to life. Her descriptions allowed me to imagine things so clearly—all the way down to the posture of characters while they were talking. When you add in the fact that this story is utterly romantic with a healthy dose of adventure, I just loved it! I found it so hard to put it down and flew through the pages!

I’m not sure how I’ve missed out on Pam Hillman’s previous books, but I can promise I won’t make that mistake again! I highly recommend Claiming Mariah!

  • Claiming Mariah is a good old fashioned western romance. This is the first book of Pam Hillman’s that I have read. Mariah was sweet and Slade had a chip on his shoulder. It really irked me that she gave everything to him in such a day and age where it was so difficult for a woman to support herself let alone other people. But alas it made for a good story. It was an enjoyable read and I would be interested to find out more about the brother in the story.

  • All I can say is that “Claiming Mariah” is great fun.

  • Claiming Mariah is the first book I’ve read by Pam Tillman but not my last: Pam has wrangled up a winner in this delightful Western romance!

This is a story that draws you in from the start. I savored the suspenseful unfolding of the story throughout – and was left wanting to read more about Mariah and Slade’s siblings in future books!

There is much to love about Claiming Mariah: its gorgeous cover, its fast-moving plot, its engaging characters, and its well-written dialog.

If you are a fan of Western Romance novels, be sure to add Claiming Mariah to your must-read list of books!

  • This was an excellent book from Pam Hillman! Loved the details that are given and the characters were great. If you like a good historical novel that brings you back in time, this is one to pick up!

  • Realistic and honest, the story really pulled me in. I loved how Mariah explained the concept of charity. Truthfully, every gentle nudge of faith in this book just made me smile. I enjoyed Hillman’s description of the acceptance of grace.

  • All Meant To Shine says:

First of all, the cover of this book is so beautiful and draws you in. Once you start the story you will be drawn in by its beauty. I love stories that are set in late 1800s like this one. Life was hard but simple and I love that. The characters are full of life and the drama is great to read. I really enjoyed the way that Hillman writes and I definitely will look forward to reading more of her books.

  • I loved this book– I’ve always been a fan of historical fiction, but I sometimes find it hard to find some really good ones but this one exceeded my expectations wonderfully!
This is another one of those books where saying too much will give the story away but I have to say that if you’re a fan of historical fiction/historical romance or even just a good action-y story then this book is certainly for you. The characters are carefully and beautifully crafted in a way that just makes you want to know more and more about their lives. I’ll definitely be recommending!

  • I liked the characters in this book. Mariah was a strong woman but honest and God fearing. She chose to let some assumptions lie. You understood she didn’t want to lose her childhood home, but would do what was right. Slade was a great cowboy. He did have a heart. I liked the slow progression of feelings through the book. It wasn’t a fast ‘I like him/her’ but a gradual getting to know you shift. Oh and add to the romance there is mystery and suspense!

  • “Claiming Mariah” is my kind of book. It has all the elements of a wonderful love story combined with elements of suspense and intrigue. Pam Hillman is a master at character development. Each character and the setting are so realistic and written so that the reader if placed right in the scene. If you enjoy reading books that draw you in, this book is for you.

  • Who knew boots could be romantic??

The premise of the story is: Mariah is barely holding the ranch together after the death of her father. She’s taking care of her grandmother and supporting her sister’s education at a special school for the blind. Out of nowhere, Slade shows up with papers showing that the gold claim her father’s money came from belonged to his father, and the ranch is ill-gotten gains that should rightfully belong to him!

With nowhere to go, she ends up staying on as Slade’s housekeeper until his mother can travel to their new home. You can imagine how she feels about that.

I don’t know if there’s a sequel planned or not, but I’d love to see Mariah’s sister come home and start hanging out with Slade’s brother, Buck, who has his own cross to bear.

  • I just finished reading “Claiming Mariah” by Pam Hillman and I really enjoyed it. In the book, Mariah Malone is overseeing her family’s ranch after the sudden death of her father. After his death she sends a letter to his old friend, in hopes they could reconcile after a mysterious argument between the two of them. Unfortunately, the son of the old friend arrives on her doorstep, with awful news. The ranch isn’t really her family’s at all – it’s his. There is a lot of mystery, backstabbing, and intrigue in this book. It’s a great story that will keep your attention, and it has a happy ending. I definitely recommend this book.

  • Cara Putman says:

Set in 1882 in the Wyoming territory, this book has a richness of layers. The characters are faced with impossible choices foisted on them by the decisions of their fathers. Watching the characters wrestle through the impossible kept me reading page after page. This book will delight you if you love a western with a twist.

  • I liked the characters in this book. I found Mariah to be a strong, honest, and God-fearing woman. I understood why she chose not to correct the assumptions that Slade chose to make. I also understood why she didn’t want to lose her childhood home, but that she would do what was right. Slade was a great cowboy, a true man of honor. I also liked the slow progression of feelings between Slade and Mariah that grew as they began to become friends. Woven in between the romance there is mystery and suspense that made the story even more interesting! I will definitely chose to read a book by Pam Hillman again.

  • I would recommend this book to anyone. It is easy to read and follow and may make you reflect on forgiveness and letting go. Also trusting in God to lead you in the right direction if you only listen. The book held your attention and didn’t weight you down. It was like a old west life that you could find yourself easily fitting in. You wanted to reach out sometimes and just shake Slade and tell him to wake up, but you keep turning the pages to find out what will happen next. Will there be a sequel where we learn a little more about Buck and the other characters? I hope so.If you love good ole’ western love stories, here’s the one for you. It not only gives you a good love story but much more.
