Ordinary Graces: Word Gifts for Any Season (Abingdon Press, October 2017)

Everyone loves to receive a gift.

And God has given us many, such as his grace—the gift we don’t deserve and can never earn. Promises from the One who declares we are already loved, already accepted, already created in his image. The question becomes, will we truly receive that gift? Will the reality of it actually change the way we think and notice and reach out?

God’s Word will stand forever, in any season of life. These truths prompt us to respond with compassion and courage.

Through inspiring devotions, Lucinda Secrest McDowell reveals biblical blessings that remind us that: God’s promises give us strength, God’s grace can be most evident at our weakest points, a proper response to our abundance of blessings is simply gratitude, and the “more” we are all looking for is the same abundant life that Jesus came to give us.

Would you like to receive these gifts of ordinary grace? Join Lucinda in focusing on one word a day through devotional readings and short benedictions for any and every season to explore the many facets of Grace, Strength, Gratitude, and Life.

  • This sweet little book arrived at just the right time for me. The gentle reminders to look for God’s grace in the ordinary of my day spoke to my heart during this very busy season of life. The small lessons fòr each day offer a simple example of God’s grace, an application story, supporting scripture and a brief prayer to center your focus for the day. Some of the stories are laugh out loud funny, some blink to hold back tears, all real and relatable. It was written to serve as a daily devotional, but would also work perfectly to start conversation with a small group. I plan on revisiting this book again. Life has a tendency to pull me away from the value of God’s simple grace and often ordinary seems to small for God’s touch. But he speaks to me in the seemingly small and mundane. I think he speaks to you as well.

This is no ordinary devotional! Ordinary Graces is anything but. I have really enjoyed learning each day with this devotional as it takes me word by word through lessons. Each day has a different word and the scripture, lessons, and personal stories all relate to that word. It has been inspiring and guides me to read even more into the scripture it provides.

I love that each entry is only a couple of pages long yet it is so rich with details. All throughout Grace is tied through many messages and we learn how God’s love for us and His Grace never fails. This little book will find itself on my person often especially through the Holidays. This would make an excellent gift!

  • This is not your typical devotional. You can pick a word for that day, One that makes you feel like you are wrapped in Jesus’ arms and read it. It’s small and ladies it will fit right in your purse, no matter where you are and what’s going on this will be your go to pick me up everyday. It is written with such love and it’s a very encouraging. I can’t wait to read more from McDowell.

This would make a great gift. I gave this Devotional 4 stars and I am recommending it to my friends.

The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are our own.

  • I think I have found my favorite Devotional writer! A year ago in June of 2016 I reviewed – Dwelling Places by Lucinda Secrest McDowell and it was fantastic. This one, Ordinary Graces is just as fantastic! Wow, I just really love Lucinda’s writing style. I guess it clicks with me. I feel like she is talking directly to me. I find myself thinking – “How did you know?”.

Just like the other one I read – the days are not dated – I like this. Whenever a devo. is dated I always feel pressure to do it on that exact day and if I can’t then it gets skipped. There is a Bible vs. at the top of each page but also each devo. is filled with Bible references and verses. I also love this, a bible devotional should be filled with scripture. These are long enough to get something out of it, but short enough to fit it in a busy schedule.

I think literally anybody can use and would like this devo. it is simple enough for beginners, deep enough and thought provoking for more seasoned Christians. Each page is so personal every person is sure to take away something from it.

I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Litfuse ~ Thank You!

  • The author shares wisdom and blessing in this faith based book that will bring the reader peace as well as give them more time with God’s word. It has encouragement in each devotion and a way with words so that the reader can immerse themselves in every page.

  • Lucinda’s smile radiates spiritual joy and her vitality warms the room. The same charm and personality in her live messages also shines through her writing. She takes the reader’s hand and delivers encouragement where she needs it most.

  • Lucinda Secrest McDowell is one of the best devotional writers I’ve read. I love her conversational tone and her ability to tap into the every day life of Jesus’ followers. In Ordinary Graces I read through the Gratitude devotions as well as a few of the other sections. With each one, I found something valuable to carry through my day. One of my favorite part of her devotions is the very end of each one. She writes as if God is speaking directly to the reader. I love that I can hear him in my heart. Ordinary Graces would be a lovely gift as well as an excellent daily devotion. I received this book for free.

  • I loved this devotion! Lucinda does a wonderful job of making the reader feel like they are sitting down with an old friend. I look forward to going through this one again!

  • Moments says:

This is such a perfect little gift book of devotional to give or keep for yourself!  Divided into 4 sections: grace, strength, gratitude and life, the readings are inspiring and really highlight the promises that God has given us.  I love the format of the book and the focus on just a word, a mere word a day to really ponder and focus on throughout that day as a reminder of God and who He is and what He gives us, His children.

  • I like the devotions in this book. They are encouraging and based solidly on the Bible. My favorites include the lavish nature of God’s grace and how God uses us in our imperfection. I recommend it.

  • Lucinda McDowell’s Ordinary Graces: Word Gifts for Any Season is a devotional collection in which she takes a word from Scripture and fashions a one- or two-page reflection with spiritual depth and pastoral insight. Ordinary Graces introduces us to grace gifts from God to strengthen our soul and offer courage to live adventurously. Since each entry is only two pages long, Ordinary Graces makes for a quick, daily read.

The book is divided into four sections: Grace, Strength, Gratitude and Life. Each section has thirty entries. Pick a word and dive in. Or, follow the numbers.

McDowell’s writing style is open, honest, funny but constantly spiritually deep.

Be sure to grab a copy for yourself — and a few to share with your friends.

  • For some reason, I am often drawn to devotionals (which I am awful at finishing) and books like Ordinary Graces which is tagged as “word gifts for any season”. These books help me breathe deeper during day to day mundane tasks, on those harder days and even on those super bright days, too.

Ordinary Graces by Lucinda Secrest McDowell is unique in that it offers encouraging words for four different areas: grace, strength, gratitude and life. Each section has 30 different entries that are two pages long. Each entry begins with a scripture, shares an encouraging word and then has a short section of words written as though God were speaking those directly to the reader.

I truly think this book is a great little bedside table book, coffee table book or guest bedroom book.

  • Words have the power to transform us. That’s the beauty of Ordinary Graces: Word Gifts For Any Season by Lucinda Secrest McDowell. Lucinda knows the power of words, and in her new devotional, she explores 120 grace-themed words and invites us to courageously respond to their truths.

Ordinary Graces is divided into four themes – Grace, Strength, Gratitude, and Life. Each devotion within these sections contains a Scripture and a word based on the sectional theme that she reflects upon through a story, quote, commentary, journaling prompt, and/or call to action before closing with prayer.

If you’re looking for a devotional that will help you open your eyes to the gifts of grace that are all around you while simultaneously feeding your love of words and The Word, then Ordinary Graces: Word Gifts For Any Season is the perfect book for you!

  • `Ordinary Graces ~ Word Gifts for Any Season` is a daily devotional by author Lucinda Secrest McDowell. There are devotions on Grace, Strength, Gratitude, and Life. Scripture verses come from the Common English Bible, Contemporary English Bible, English Standard Version, Good News Translation, and King James Version.

This is a woman’s devotional book with 120 devotionals. The object is to concentrate on a different word every day depending on what season you are in. There is a short scripture verse, followed by a devotional and then a prayer.

I prefer the print size and think the cover sets off the book. I highly recommend this devotional to youthful women as well as those who are older. The size of the book is perfect for carrying in a purse.

Disclaimer: “I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own.”

  • My Ink Dance says:

Ordinary Graces is an opportunity to daily find that endless grace right in the middle of real life. By looking at one word, a scripture, and a sweet little note from God’s heart each day, McDowell encourages your soul in the deepest places.

  • Ordinary Graces will provide daily bread from the heart of God. Lucinda’s heart shines through in this wonderful devotional book. And it will allow a deeper look at the heart of God for you.

  • Thirty words. Thirty insightful, well-crafted thoughts to mull over. Thirty Scriptures to ingest. The subtitle is “Word Gifts for Any Season,” and I’d agree that it can be used at any time of year as a supplement to deep Bible study or just to get someone thinking about the Word. Why not start with Advent? Or as a gift to start someone’s new year thinking about God?

  • A enjoyable read that takes you step by step into different themes for devotional. Grace,Strangth, Gratidute, and Life are what we find in each section. She also has it with scripture which I love and also stories or quotes through out.

  • Ordinary Graces by Lucinda Secrest McDowell is perfect to start your day, refresh your day, or even to end the day. The diverse collection of word studies and reflections mean that every reader can find a word they need to ‘hear’. Short, sweet, and full of grace – this devotional book would also make a wonderful Christmas gift for family and friends.

  • A lovely devotion perfect for any one, in any circumstance, Ordinary Graces will bless your heart. In the good way of course.

  • This entire book is full of the words of gratitude to God for giving us the gift.

  • Ordinary Graces, a devotional by Lucinda Secrest McDowell, has a daily word to focus on that will encourage you. The book is divided into 4 sections: grace, strength, gratitude, and life. Each section has 30 daily readings that have a word that focuses on the theme of the section.

  • Ordinary Graces is a lovely devotional that is uplifting and inspiring. The book is divided into four sections: grace, strength, gratitude, and life. Each entry includes a Bible verse and a short story or reflection based upon one specific word from the verse. This devotional would be a wonderful gift for a friend.

  • Ordinary Graces by Lucinda Secrest McDowell is no “ordinary” devotional book. Rather than just a few emotional stories that pull at our heartstrings and offer an unrealistic stretch to make a spiritual point, McDowell, on a daily two-page layout, offers hearty biblical nourishment for the soul.

  • A Rup Life says:

In Ordinary Graces we visit a different word for each day. There are 120 different devotionals which are broken up into 4 different categories. Each devotional takes a look at scripture then features a life application devotion to go along with the verses. I really love McDowell’s voice and she speaks to me. I’m looking forward to diving into this book further in the New Year.

  • In “Ordinary Graces” there is page after page of encouragement through scripture, prayer and personal stories. I love how the book is broken up into sections on Grace, Strength, Gratitude and Life. As I read through the book, I found words that gave me hope, encouraged me and helped me to live a more joyful life. We can get weary from struggles and feel like we can’t go on. With this wonderful devotion, you can find scriptures that lift you up as you soak in the Word.

  • Ordinary Graces does not disappoint. With each devotional, the reader is taught to be still. To breathe in scriptures–slow and wide–allowing them to cascade over the spirit’s barren places. Lucinda’s words are wrought with wisdom, not just from her own experience, but via the stories and musings of others in the faith as well.

  • God is Love says:

Ordinary Graces is a delightful devotional book written by Lucinda Secrest McDowell.

The author grabs the reader’s attention from the first page with this line: I was “that girl.” She then continues to describe how she used to be: “Striving. Enslaved. Rigid. Yes, a Christ-follower. Carrying around God’s gift of grace, but never bothering to open it and embrace its richness as a way of life.” She then states that she was the “last person you’d expect to be writing a book offering the many gifts of God’s ordinary graces.” But then she was “transformed by an encounter with Jesus” and He enabled her to write. And boy, can she write!

  • MysteriesEtc says:

Ordinary Graces: Word Gifts for Any Season if filled with meaningful and valuable encouraging words. I highly recommend this devotional.

  • I am always looking for devotionals that will bring some meaning to my and not become another thing for me to check off my list. This book seems to be right up in that category. Lucinda encourages you through these devotions to basically slow down and take the time to find the ordinary graces in each of our days and lives. I can’t wait to continue using this book in the new year to come.

  • This past year, I savored Lucinda Secrest McDowell’s book DWELLING PLACES:WORDS TO LIVE IN EVERY SEASON. By the end, the book was worn, pages ruffled and marked up with notes of who to share the two page devotions with and messages to myself to reread. While it is always a sense of satisfaction to finish a book, I was sad that the there were not as many devotions as there were days of the year. I am delighted that I will be able to start 2018 with a new book by Lucinda Secrest McDowell

  • There is a particular gentleness about Lucinda McDowell’s writing that strengthens and centers me. I don’t review devotionals very often, but even the title of this book, ordinary graces, seemed to speak to me. I’m very glad I have crossed paths with this author, because this book was a timely God appointment in my life. As I navigate an empty nest, elder care for my parent’s and learning to parent adult children, this devotional has helped me immeasurably!

  • This is one devotional that every woman needs sitting on her bedside table. The pages within this book are meant to encourage, strengthen and empower us with God’s unending love. In times of heartache, this book is perfect(I just went through a devastating loss and this book helped me through!). In times of trial, this book is just what you need to read. In times of happiness and pleasantries, picking up this book will just add that much more grace in your life.

  • McDowell writes from a mother’s perspective, a friend’s heart, and a woman’s mind. Her words are my thoughts — or at least, the ideas I wish I knew how to express. These messages are short, most falling at just one page each. Still, it’s enough to set my day on the right foot so that I have emotional strength for what the daylight holds, and spiritual strength for anything that comes my way.

  • Fruitbearers says:

The book will open readers’ eyes to a variety of God’s wondrous graces for any season of their lives. They get to appreciate God’s redeeming grace, transforming grace, sustaining grace, inexhaustible grace, everyday grace…again and again. Each devotion may seem short but it’s deep and impactful, encouraging and faith-building, refreshing and comforting. Ordinary Graces will help you notice God’s daily graces, draw you closer to God, and help you be more thankful and joyful.

  • More Of Him says:

This is such an uplifting book. It seemed each and every page was filled with things I needed to read.

I highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

  • This Author is a wonderful writer who has a deep relationship with God. Each devotion is evidence of her walk with her Saviour. She has included many wonderful stories and quotes from the giants of faith past and present. I absolutely love this devotional. Each devotion starts with a topic so the reader can pick and choose or simply read them in order. I like being able to easily find what I need to read that day. The devotion contains the Word of God and a prayer at the end.
