Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation

Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation (New Growth Press, October 2017)

Let Scripture reform the next generation.

There are many different kinds of legacies we can leave, but sharing yourself and your faith with the next generation will always stand the test of time. Through showing himself and his wisdom in the book of Proverbs, God has also left his legacy with us and relies on us to share it with our children and grandchildren. But before we can share that wisdom, first we must grow in our own understanding and knowledge and record, reflect, and consider what we have learned.

Pass it On provides readers with an opportunity to create a legacy of wisdom and faith and to share it with their children and grandchildren. As readers are guided through the book of Proverbs, they are asked to create their own personalized, wisdom journal with the aim of giving it to someone they love. Through careful study, answering questions, writing out prayers, and sharing personal stories, readers can create a lasting keepsake for themselves and for their families and friends.

Created by Champ Thornton, best-selling author of The Radical Book for Kids, Pass It On is an innovative resource to strengthen families and help them grow in their love for God and each other. This is a perfect gift for an older and wiser friend or relative, so they can share themselves and what they have learned about God with the next generation.

The fresh and careful translation provided comes from Dr. Bruce Waltke, who, now in his eighties, has devoted his life to a humble and Christ-focused study of God s Word, and especially the book of Proverbs. His two-volume work on Proverbs is considered by many as the premier commentary in the English language. As you study the translation of individual chapters, add your own comments in the margins. And feel free to circle, underline, and connect key words or phrases as you see them in the chapter for the day.

  • As I read through I gained a better understanding of each chapter of Proverbs and myself with the brief synopsis and questions to be answered at the end. I feel Pass It On can be a good way to grow a deeper walk in one’s Christian faith. Journalers may especially enjoy Pass It On.

  • Moments says:

That is why I love the style as it is so much more than a book, it is an keepsake. There is ample space to write on the lines provided in this and also in the margins on the pages. Each chapter in this book focuses on each chapter of Proverbs. The text for each chapter is printed at the start of the chapter, making it so accessible and right there; although honestly I will probably rewrite some of my notes and thoughts from this into my Bible to have there while reading. I love this book, it is a great format and a wonderful keepsake.

  • Pass it On by Champ Thornton is a Proverbs study guide, but that’s not all–this book is also a journal that allows readers to share their own wisdom and insights with someone special in their life…

  • This is a lovely book, perfect for keeping, or giving during the holiday season! I don’t know about you, but our family bible has numerous notations in it, as different generations wrote key thoughts down next to passages. But as the borders are small, not much is written. This book allows you, and your family, to take that idea and add your thoughts on different bible passages and prayers into one book, that can be handed down, AND added to! WHAT an unique gift to give this holiday season!

  • Cummins Life says:

I love the idea of passing on my journey to my kids and I’m thankful to have a tool to help me do that.

  • Overall, I thought the setup of this book and Proverbs study guide journal is really great and provides so many great questions to help readers think about what they have read and learn to apply it to their life. I personally find that Bible study books and journals are more effective when the author uses questions to fully engage the reader in the subject matter. I think this is an excellent study of the book of Proverbs and provides readers a great set up for really understanding the material they are reading and applying it on a personal level.

  • I have never read through the entire book of Proverbs. I have read a select few that have popped up in bible studies or sermons – but I have never read through the entire book. This book helped me to gain a greater understanding of how God speaks to us through Proverbs.
I loved the way this broke it down to unpack each chapter. I loved writing out the answers through out the book. It truly was a pleasure to read.

  • I thought hard about who I would give this journal to and I definitely want to give it to my children. I’d like to get two more so that I can go through it again and have different answers and thoughts for each child. What a gift to give them when they get older!

  • The journal is a study on Proverbs. It is divided into chapters and goes into depth about the scriptures. I love how there are questions for you to fill out to share your thoughts and as you do , your personal story is written in the journal. I think how much of a blessing this will be to my children as they see my thoughts of what God spoke to me. I highly recommend this to everyone. The journal is meant to guide you through scriptures, reflect on them and share your thoughts. I pray that the journal not only blesses you, but blesses generations to come.

  • When you are finished going through it the idea is to give it to someone from a younger generation. I really did like this concept. I think this is a great idea for parents to give to their children or grandparents to give to their grandchildren. This is a great way to share in your spiritual journey.

  • Champ Thornton’s Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation gives us an opportunity to create a new family legacy — one where parents and children can share in their reflections about the Book of Proverbs, passing on not only the wisdom gathered from the text but also the difference that wisdom makes in real lives.

  • I like the concept of this Bible study journal. I would need 4 copies, so I could complete one for each of my children. Or my mother could do one for each of her grandchildren. (Great Christmas gift idea!) If you want to leave a spiritual legacy for your children, I’d definitely recommend Pass It On.

  • Basically this book is taking you through the book of Proverbs in a way that will not only grow your own spiritual self, but will be a testimony to those who come after you.

  • What an awesome book! This book is designed to take you on a guided tour through Proverbs and has a whole slew of reflection questions for you to answer journal style. It’s a devotional/journal/bible study in one. The book is written as a learn and share vessel for parents to write in and pass down the wisdom they have gained through the proverbs to their children. Such a great idea for a book, it’s well written, well organized and offers a very modern way to learn and share ancient wisdom with those we love (and grow and discover more ourselves!). I

  • Noveltea says:

I really like the idea of filling out a book about the book of Proverbs for the next generation. How much more Biblical can you get? So many of the verses in Proverbs are of a father passing advice and wisdom along to his son, and so kudos to Mr. Thornton for creating this book.

  • This is a journal on the proverbs that you can write in and give to your children, grandchildren or just to someone you are discipleling. I like the idea of journaling my thoughts and insights on this great book that I can then share with the future generations. Great concept , great execution your supply the wisdom and insight.

  • This is a beautiful book, and is challenging me to consider Proverbs and the truths of the book in an entirely new way. The author give correlating scripture to consider as you journal through the proverb, and many times asks that you re-write it in your own words. This is a powerful tool for me personally, because I’m literally writing out what I “hear” God speaking to me through the Scripture.

  • I love the journal aspect of this book! It’s an excellent way to delve deeper into the book of Proverb.

  • Pass It On takes a unique approach to Bible study. Not only are you reflecting on your own heart, but you are doing so even as you look ahead to how best to impact someone else with your words and, most importantly, God’s wisdom. The structure and the writing are accessible and easy to navigate, and the truth that can be mined here is endless. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to pass on truth to the next generation.

  • Pass It On: A Proverbs Journal for the Next Generation by Champ Thornton is a book that combines the styles of a commentary and Bible study to create a journal that is unique and purposeful. When I first received the book, I figured it was just another journaling type product amongst the many that are popular right now. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to learn that the heart behind this journal is to do what the title says, and pass it on to someone younger spiritually as a means for imparting the wisdom you gain while filling its pages. The old adage, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” is hard for me to follow as I truly appreciate aesthetics. Pass It On is as aesthetically pleasing as it is rich in content.

  • This book or journal is seriously the most beautiful book I have seen in a while. I love that this is centered around proverbs. Which is my favorite book of the bible right now! I found this a super intriguing to me. This journal dives deep into the meaning of each verse. I also love the concept of passing this book on to the next generation. It is something that your loved one or friend will like to receive.

  • The unique part of this devotional is its ultimate purpose; after completing the journal, it can be passed on as a significant memento to children or family members. My husband is infinitely more introspective than I am, so I asked him to take a look at the journal. He really liked it and wanted to keep it as his own devotional. It’s perfectly fine for both men and women
