Rescued Hearts (Mantle Rock Publishing, September 2017)

Children’s clothing designer Mary Wade Kimball’s soft spot for animals leads to a hostage situation when she spots a briar- entangled kitten in front of an abandoned house. Discovering the kidnapped woman ratchets the complications for undercover agent Brett Davis. Weighing the difference of ruining his three months’ investigation against the woman’s safety, Brett forsakes his mission and helps her escape, the bent-on-revenge brutes following behind.

  • MY THOUGHTS

I love this author. It seems she writes from the heart and soul and when you read it goes straight to your heart and soul. The author gives you so much, suspense, a sweet romance, those moments when your heart skips a beat, and a bit of mystery. As you turn the pages the characters become more and more realistic. You feel that you can relate to them. Very believable. I loved the mystery. You find as you read that there are questions you want answers to and that keeps those pages turning. And of course, there’s that romance that we all love. This was a sweet romance. The kind we all wish would come our way. A good Christian read. Looking forward to more on Mary Wade, Brett and Gigi. Will there be a lasting romance between Mary and Brett.? Will Brett be her knight in shining armor or will Mary’s heart be broken?

I received a copy of this book from Litfuse Publicity Group and voluntarily decided to review it.

  • This book is Hope’s best to date. I loved the action and fun.

I also enjoyed that Hope weaves in beautiful lessons in her book.

First, she speaks to the Christian calling we all have in life.

One of the subplots in the book involves Mary Wade’s ongoing issues with her parents over what being called into ministry really involves.

Her father and mother are not happy with Mary Wade’s decision to become a business woman, opening her own shop selling her beautiful designs. Mary Wade loves the work, but her parents are disappointed that she has not become pursued “ministry” as either a pastor’s wife or missionary. She feels rejected by her parents because she pursues her own dreams.

I enjoyed the main action as Mary Wade and Brett have to flee killers

  • “Rescued Hearts” by author Hope Toler Dougherty is a must read for anyone who has ever saved an animal and not stopped to think about getting hurt themselves. Mary Wade Kimball loves all animals, and that is what leads her right into a lot of problems both good and bad. When she is seen and caught by 2 men while trying to save a kitten her problems begin. She is tied up and beaten and starts to think that she will never be free. While she is being held a third man shows up and Mary Wade really thinks she is going to die. Brett Davis is not what he seems, or is he? Mary Wade will have to be strong and keep her faith and hope through her ordeal. Will she be strong enough? I give this book a 5/5. I was given this book for a review by Litfuse publicity Group and all opinions are mine.

  • Rescued Hearts by Hope Toler Dougherty was a sweet story. I did get bored from time to time as I was reading but that always passed after a couple of pages, so I didn’t have a hard time finishing this book like I have had with other books.

  • My first book by Hope Toler Dougherty and I enjoyed it very much. The characters were so real, great descriptions in the scenes. Love the story of Mary Wade and Brett, also Brett’s grandma Gigi really adds so much to the story . Bad guys, good guys, suspenseful through out the book. A book that is hard to put down once you start reading it. I don’t want to give away any spoilers to the book so no summary of the book. I definitely want to read more from Hope in the future.

  • This is a new to me author.

Rescued Hearts has suspense, romance and good characters.

I had a tough time getting into it. Midway through it picked up and I was happy that I continued reading it.

I liked that the characters were believable and real life played into the story.

I will say that this is a 4 star read. Give it a try.

The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are our own.

  • The first thing that captured my attention about Rescued Hearts was the kitten on the front cover. I knew my 24-year-old daughter would want to read it. Turns out it was a decoy (in more ways than one! ). My daughter did read it before I did. We both found that it grabbed our attention from the beginning!

One part of the story hit a little close to home for me. Mary Wade felt like her parents’ love was conditional, and that they weren’t proud of her because she chose a different path than they wanted for her. Sadly, I somewhat know how that feels, because that’s how it seems, where my father is concerned.

  • The novel had a fun, witty element which contrasted with the menacing air of suspense.
Characters were well drawn and welcoming. There were some wonderfully amusing moments where characters bounced off each other.
The leading lady was a wonderful mixture of a big heart, lacking in confidence but with splashes of bravery. She had a social conscience too – looking out for the lost, the hurting and the lonely and engaging with them.

  • I love a good thriller and that’s what I found in “Rescued Hearts” by Hope Toler Dougherty. Mary Wade Kimball stumbles into the middle of an undercover operation. Two thugs take her captive, beat her, threaten her, bind and gag her in an old shack. The third man, Brett, comes in, threatens her, but seems a little different. He is the undercover cop and blows his cover to rescue her. What follows is the cat and mouse chase as these very bad guys find Mary Wade and try to silence her since she knows who they are. Brace yourself for some very tense reading moments as the story continues and as Brett’s family is terrorized as well.

  • I have really enjoyed reading this book. It starts off very fast paced and I was a little worried that the story would be told too quickly and then the rest of the book would drag along. That actually didn’t happen so I was glad for that. The Author has a good writing style. I stayed very engaged throughout the whole story. I enjoyed each character very much and I think my favorite character was Brett’s Grandmother, Gigi. She seemed like somebody I could be friends with. I also really liked the setting. I have been reading a lot of books in the Carolina’s lately, so maybe I should visit there sometime. The author does an excellent job of keeping the story going and having just enough suspense to have you wanting to know what’s going to happen. I recommend this book for any avid reader.

Anytime I see a cat on the cover, I have to read the book description to find out what it is all about. The cover of this book drew me in, but the writing kept me there. I really enjoyed reading this book and the dilemmas that the characters found themselves in.
Mary Wade can’t help herself when she spots a helpless kitten, but she had not idea what would happen next. She soon finds herself in a situation where she herself needs rescuing. A great read, that keeps you reading to find out what will happen next,
I received a copy of the book from the publisher, the review is entirely my own.

  • I loved this story so much! It is so fun, so engaging, and so well written. I highly recommend this novel!

  • A damsel in distress rescued by a knight in shining armour is the thesis in this modern day suspenseful, romantic novel by Hope Toler Dougherty. But more is at stake then being rescued from two hooligans for Mary Wade Kimball! Don’t miss reading this charming story.

  • Dougherty packs the plot of Rescued Hearts full of action from the very first page to the last!  When I read that the main character was a clothing designer, I somehow figured the story would be mostly sweet romance, but while that element is there, Rescued Hearts is much, much more.

That action starts off at the very beginning and rises throughout.  It never feels scary, which I appreciate, but Mary Wade finds herself in some really tough situations.  I enjoyed Brett’s changing roles and the way that his experience and job adds to the action, both physical and emotional.

  • Who would have imagined that trying to rescue a lost kitten could get a girl into so much trouble? Mary Wade Kimball sure found out the hard way! A storm would quickly overtake her life and it wasn’t from the threatening wind and clouds that preceded an approaching hurricane.

“Rescued Hearts” quickly moved into an action and suspense filled tale with plenty of danger and romance to keep most readers turning those pages. Characters were well developed and I enjoyed getting to know Mary Wade and Brett during their adventure. Each of them learned valuable lessons along the way as they worked hard to avoid the men after them, including a dependence on their faith to get them through.

  • This is my first read from Hope Toler Dougherty, but I was totally blown away! She has a beautiful writing style that grabbed my attention and really brought me into the story. The characters were well developed and unique. I love that they were relatable and fun to follow. The storyline was intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat. There were unexpected twists and turns that really made this a fun book to read! I highly recommend it!

  • This novel is a good mix of romance and suspense. The female characters are great. I especially like Brett’s grandmother. She might seem like a mild woman but she comes through when the suspense heightens. A good discussion point is the issue of parental expectations, something Mary Wade has to face. A good book for readers who like a mix of romance and suspense.

  • This was a nice story with a sweet romance in the midst of some suspenseful situations. It was not an edge-of-the-seat page turner for me, but I did enjoy the romance between Mary Wade and Brett. Full review at my website.

I received this book complimentary as a participant of the Litfuse Blog Tour. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are my own.

  • Rescued Hearts was such an unexpected treat! Mystery, romance…and may I say again ROMANCE! A thrilling ride from the opening page!

  • EmpowerMoms says:

Overall the story kept my interest, had a steady pace, and was a good drama with some romance. I really liked both characters Mary and Brett and how they got along with eachother and worked well together.

  • What an exciting story!  First, readers meet a woman out on a bike ride named Mary Wade.  The next thing you know she is kidnapped.  From that point on, Mary tries to start a business, heal from her encounter, try not to like the detective who rescued her and so much more!  Believe me, at the end of the book, I thought the story was over only to find out there was a touch of genius I had yet to discover in the plot!

Mary is trying to find her way in a world where parents are encouraging her.  She is danger or pain, needing to learn to rely on God more and that’s hard for Mary.  Plus, when the man she is smitten with can’t make up his mind as he argues within himself for and against a relationship with her, well that sure doesn’t help quiet the insecurity in Mary’s heart.

Add to that an experience with a hurricane, a teenager asking Mary hard questions about God, and more and what do you find?  A story that is intriguing to read, and enjoyable along with a few serious and funny moments.  Mary has such a hard time when it seems like all her friends are married.  She just isn’t someone who grabs the attention of a man worth spending time with until danger is right in her face!

However, don’t take my word for it.  Grab a copy, enjoy the adventure and tension in the plot along with learning to believe in God in good times and in bad.  I hope you really make time to soak up the tale and share the book with readers you know because it is one nobody should pass up!

  • As much as I enjoyed the first book that I read, I liked this one even more. Much like Mars…with Venus Rising, Rescued Hearts has some quirky, lovable characters, but with the new addition of suspense. With the crafty blending of crime and romance and the utilization of characters that are like people you might have in your life, Hope created a story that was very enjoyable. The story pulled me in and had me wanting to read any free minute, so as to see what happened next. It had me wondering how many people have inadvertently found themselves in danger as a result of a self-less act of trying to rescue an animal (or a person). Fortunately, Mary Wade discovered an inner-strength and was able to draw on her faith to find the hope necessary to help get her through.

  • There were some great romantic moments and a lot of funny banter. Mary Wade was such a stubborn and strong character, a good match for the tough Brett. I loved how prayer was her first thought going into a difficult situation and that she tried to trust God even though it felt like her world was falling apart. This was a wonderful romance with exciting suspense I couldn’t stop reading!

  • Brett was the knight in shining armor. He was very protective and tried so hard to even protect Mary Wade from himself. And Mary Wade? Well, even though she was in a vulnerable situation in her life and life was not looking to good at the moment, she certainly held her own. This is definitely an inspirational story and both characters relied on their faith in God to get them through very realistically. There were some intense scenes that had me biting my nails and flipping through the pages. I could almost feel the bruises myself.
Bottom line, I really got lost in this story and I was a happy, happy reader. I am looking forward to reading the author’s other stories. Looks like one is set in Ireland- oh be still my heart.

  • The book starts out with a kidnapping and then a rescue, so it didn’t take long for me to get pulled into the story. I found myself liking the two main characters right away, and loved the conversations and interplay between the two of them. The male hero of the story also had an interesting and amusing grandmother that played into the story a lot.

  • amandainpa says:

A suspenseful story with a sweet romance. Kept me on the edge of my seat!

  • Besides all of the things already mentioned, this was just an all around good book. The characters were well-developed. and likable. The story was interesting and fast-paced. And bot characters talked about their relationship with Christ without sounding “preachy” or forced.

This isn’t a deep read, but it’s very well done. I recommend it with four strong stars.

  • Moments says:

I really enjoyed this book from the start to the end! Mary Wade is such a great main character and one that was so easy to connect with. Mary Wade is following her own path in life, following her heart and what she believes God’s will is; however this does not really match up with her parents’ expectations for her. Finding herself in a tricky situation she has to rely on Brett to help her, which goes against her independent spirit.

  • Just when you think things are about to calm down, nope, we are off, and you never know what is around the next corner.
What does an innocent bike ride, with a kitten rescue have to do with an undercover detective? You are going to find out real quick, and those that captured Mary Wade don’t give up very easily, and the rescuer Brett Davis seems to get in trouble for helping, maybe not.

  • Rescued Hearts recipe– Take one helpless kitten, add two criminals, mix in an undercover detective, toss a dash of an innocent bystander, gently stir disappointed parents, blend a meddlesome Gigi, add a stalker for flavor and combine to make a unique criminal caper with a satisfying side of love story.

Can Detective Davis rescue her or will she fall victim to the nefarious intentions of her captures? Readers will just have to wait until the end to see how Hope Toler Dougherty ends Rescued Hearts.

  • This one is hard to put down! I loved the characters and how well portrayed they were.

  • I will admit that the story started out really rough for me. The dialogue wasn’t really on point, and I started to wonder if it was independently published. A lot of the beginning of this book seemed forced and didn’t flow well. That either changed half way through the book, or I was taken in by the story and able to ignore it. By the end of the book I enjoyed what I read, but getting there took a little bit for me.

  • My favorite kind of book. A romantic suspense. I was intrigued by the description. My favorite kind of read.

    I wasn’t disappointed! I loved every minute.

There was something about this book that I just couldn’t put my finger on. I did no research. I just kept thinking I had read something else by this author and then it dawned on me!
I went to my book shelf and found Mars with Venus then I found my 5 star review. I remember when I read this book last spring how I hoped there would be a series. I was a little disappointed not to see more. Hint. Hint.

But am I glad that Miss Dougherty has been busy elsewhere.

Rescued Hearts is hard to describe. It is difficult to speak to how good this book is.

I love a thriller. I really love a super clean thriller. This is what you get.

I was captivated and taken in from the description and then right on to page one and all the way to the end!

I am excitedly anticipating what Hope throws at us next time!

  • This book is full of rescues. Some of them are quite surprising. It makes one wonder just how many times Mary is going to need rescuing. It really goes against her nature to give up control, and that does present problems.

This book has many twists I would never thought of, and I loved them. But I still wonder about that kitten.

Thank you, Ms Dougherty, for this chance to add you to my “I wanna read more of these authors” list. I’m looking forward to your next book.

  • Although I wasn’t overly excited with some parts of this book, I did like it overall. Brett’s grandmother was my favorite character, with her no-nonsense outlook and love for family. I wouldn’t necessarily consider this book one to be classified in the Christian genre. Just because the people pray out loud from time to time when they’re in a bind doesn’t make it a book about seeking God in situations. I’d label it more as a Romantic Thriller.

  • Let’s face it, Christian Suspense/Romance books have pretty much gotten repetitive. Strong female lead gets in trouble and is rescued by strong (good-looking) male lead and they live happily ever after. If that’s your view of what Christian Suspense/Romance has become, then you need to break out of the mold and read this exciting new book by Hope Toler Dougherty. Yes, it starts with a strong female lead that gets rescued by a strong male lead. The difference with this story is how these things happen and all of the terrific twists and turns that occur in between. The suspense never lets up until the final pages, so make sure you’ve belted yourself in when you sit down to read this story!

Is this a “Guys Book”? This book is for everyone with characters that are fully developed and a

  • I was sent this book in exchange for a review as part of a blog tour.  My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

This starts off with a bang, and I thought I was going to devour it.  However; I just could not get into the writing style.  This starts off with a women who is taken off the street.  Within the first conversation with one of the men, she was willing to trust him.  Normally I love fast paced reads, but this moved a little too fast making it not as believable.

Unfortunately, this was just not for me.

  • I did like the surprise of the third man who seemed to be the leader. Brett is not happy at all that there is a strange woman tied up in the house. It does complicate things for him since he is an undercover agent. Brett was a very well written character with determination and a knack for getting out of tough situations. Will he risk blowing his cover to rescue Mary Wade? The action is good and kept my attention. I liked the references to their faith and especially liked Brett’s grandmother. She is a feisty woman who secretly plays a little matchmaking between Brett and Mary Wade. The story will definitely keep your attention as Brett and Mary Wade try to keep one step ahead of the men who kidnapped her. I did find the ending a bit of a surprise.

  • Imagine being out on a bike ride and seeing a kitten in distress. Of course you do the humane thing and stop to help the kitten. The next thing you know you are being kidnapped! That is the situation Mary Wade finds herself in at the start of this book and that is just the start of the book. The rest of the book is jammed packed with action and does he or doesn’t he back and forth with both of the main characters. This is a great thriller that has you wondering what will happen next. Recommend if you like your thrillers with a side of handsome guy coming to the rescue.

  • I really enjoyed reading this story. It sure kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t know what was going to happen next. There was a lot of suspense and twists here and there. A romance that wasnt what I thought was going to happen but after they spent some time together they seem to have gotten feelings for one another will it last?

Would definitely recommend this story for romance lovers. I am looking forward to reading more of Hope’s work.

  • Something I really liked about this book was how the author did not give everything away in regards to the suspense in the book. Reading through the story, when I thought I had everything somewhat figured out, a new twist was added. This was a good book that keeps you turning pages. Check it out.

  • I enjoyed Rescued Hearts by Hope Toler Doughtery. This was my first time to read any of the author’s work and though at first, I was slow to warm up to her writing style, I thought that the book was an interesting read. It isn’t one of those stories that are predictable or cookie cutter, so that kept me reading each chapter wondering what would happen next. I also enjoyed the storyline as it has a nice mix of romance and some suspense, which is nice and refreshing.

  • My favorite kind of book. A romantic suspense. I was intrigued by the description. My favorite kind of read.

  • I have to say even though this is a full length novel I was so glued to it, I finished it before I knew it. I love the chemistry between Brett and Mary Wade and even the secondary characters like the noisy neighbor and Brett’s grandmother add even more charm to the story line. Just when things are seeming like they are settling down, the action gets even more intense. I don’t want to spoil it for you so I will leave things there and recommend this novel to anyone who loves a great mystery suspense! I give this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

  • I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Suspense/Romance fiction, you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to read more from Hope Toler Dougherty. I give this 5 STARS.

  • This is definitely a 4 star worthy novel! I loved every second of this edge-of-your-seat, heart pounding, soul captivating story. I fell in love with Brett, Mary, Agnes, the kitten and even Gigi. They all brought something to the story that leaves the reader with a fresh new outlook on life. From kidnapping, to rescuing and learning to let go and trust again, Ms. Dougherty creates a novel that you won’t soon forget. I highly recommend this novel to all and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the next one.

  • If you’re looking for warm characters with some high-stakes suspense and a heartfelt truth of resting in the fact that you are loved just as you are… Rescued Hearts needs to be on your TBR pile! It will keep you guessing as well as holding your breath to see if the characters survive those who want them dead. And then there’s Gigi… Audrey Hepburn with a gun and a penchant for matchmaking.

  • I was impressed with this book from the beginning. Hope grabs her audience by getting her heroine, Mary Wade, kidnapped right off the bat, while rescuing a cat to beat all, and with a hurricane headed her way. Then the knight in shining armor, undercover cop, Brett Davis, saves the day by rescuing her.

  • Rescued Hearts contains numerous common triggers, so it’s not for very sensitive readers. Still, Dougherty kept the story clean but thrilling at the same time. I really appreciated the way that faith was presented.

  • Discover the exciting story that had many twists and turns.
