Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity (FaithWords, December 2017)

Staying busy is easy. Staying well rested— there’s a challenge.

How can you keep your energy, happiness, creativity, and relationships fresh and thriving in the midst of never-ending family demands, career pressures, and the stress of everyday life? In Sacred Rest, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified internal medicine doctor, reveals why rest can no longer remain optional.

Dr. Dalton-Smith shares seven types of rest she has found lacking in the lives of those she encounters in her clinical practice and research-physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, sensory, social, creative—and why a deficiency in any one of these types of rest can have unfavorable effects on your health, happiness, relationships, creativity, and productivity. Sacred Rest combines the science of rest, the spirituality of rest, the gifts of rest, and the resulting fruit of rest. It shows rest as something sacred, valuable, and worthy of our respect.

By combining scientific research with personal stories, spiritual insight, and practical next steps, Sacred Rest gives the weary permission to embrace rest, set boundaries, and seek sanctuary without any guilt, shame, or fear.

  • `Sacred Rest` is a 30-day journey on resting the body, mind, and spirit. If we don’t rest our bodies we are sure to burn-out. Part one uses stories, research, reflection, and application as tools to understanding rest. Part two discusses the spiritual side of rest and part three is the Promises of Rest. I decided to review this book to learn about the spiritual side of rest.

  • We all need to try to rest, but it is so hard. This is a great reminder of that.

  • I found the book’s tone and applications approachable, implementable, and — frankly — convicting. It encourages interaction, suggesting that the reader start with a (provided) self-assessment prior to deep-diving. (Hence the convicting descriptor, as I found several areas I could stand to seriously rest!) An encouraging read for men and women alike. I believe everyone can find multiple takeaways to implement.

  • We need to be reminded that rest is a godly discipline. God designed us to need rest. I didn’t realize that there are several kinds of rest we need. And, sleep is not necessarily rest. Hiking in the mountains can be restful. Rest can be uncomfortable so we keep ourselves busy and distracted. I recommend this good book on a spiritual discipline we too often ignore.

  • I needed this book, to help me start off the new year feeling more energized. I have thought about the physical rest (and how I need more), but hadn’t considered the other ways one needs to rest. This book is excellent!

  • Moments says:

This is a great book for each and every person to read! Life is so busy, the everyday life and responsibilities that go along with everything that it seems as if every second we are doing something or connected, as we are constantly checking e-mail, social media feeds, etc, when we are not interacting face to face with someone. “Sacred Rest” addresses why rest is so important and the benefits or gifts that come from rest.

  • A very insightful book for anyone but especially those who never seem to slow down. Rest is important for every area of our bodies including mentally and spiritually. I like that the author points out the signs that indicate the need for rest, some of which we’ve all seen but maybe not recognized and also one thing she brings up is the need for creative rest….never thought about that before. I enjoyed the journey with this book and appreciate what I’ve taken away from it.

  • This is an excellent book for moms, busy women or anyone who has ever felt like they reached their limit. I have experienced the “running on fumes” feeling too many times Katy and this book gave me such practical ways to focus on resting and encouraged me in so many ways.

  • I found it to be super helpful. This book is great as it brings huge awareness to your life and helps you create balance. I really loved this book and know a few people who need this book. I will be reading this book again.

  • If you are feeling “tired” or drained in many areas of your life I would highly recommend this book as one to pick up. The author has a smooth and easy to read style that will help guide you along through the chapters as you discover all the ways we could be needing more rest.

  • Dr. Dalton-Smith challenges us to find our own place of rest. She gives great tips for slowing down and making time for the right kind of rest.

  • There are so many great points in Sacred Rest. It is a journey, and I appreciated the author’s format and purpose in having shorter chapters. It’s a book to come back to. It’s a book that you can put down, but as easily, be able to pick it back up. A reminder of what we need, as well as what it represent, Sacred Rest touches on all aspect of our lives – from health to relationships to finding solace in God’s presence.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Sacred Rest! Saundra Dalton-Smith, MD combines research with experience, identifying seven areas of rest in which we are deficient and offering insightful solutions for these deficiencies. A wealth of information, Sacred Rest enlightens and encourages readers to embrace the gifts of rest in order to “recover your life, renew your energy, and restore your sanity.” What a wonderful and worthy challenge!
