Sit, Stay, Love (Harvest House, April 2016)

Take one abrasive professional athlete, a quirky out-of-work schoolteacher, and an overweight geriatric dog, and you’re ready for a lesson in love . . . Tippy style.

Pro baseball pitcher Cal Crawford is not a dog guy. When he inherits his deceased mother’s elderly dog, Tippy, he’s quick to call on a pet-sitting service.

Gina isn’t thrilled to be a dog sitter when her aspirations lie in the classroom. Furthermore, she can’t abide the unfriendly Cal, a man with all the charm of a wet towel. But with no other prospects and a deep love for all things canine, she takes the job caring for Tippy.

As Gina travels through Cal’s world with Tippy in tow, she begins to see Cal in a different light. Gina longs to show Cal the God-given blessings in his life that have nothing to do with baseball or fame. When her longing blooms into attraction, Gina does her best to suppress it. But Cal is falling in love with her too…

Reviews

  • Unconditional love from a small elderly dog called Tippy. She will invade the reader’s hearts as well as the characters in the book. Wonderful characters who feel like friends. Delightful bond of Tippy and dog sitter Gina. Absolutely charming novel. A real treat.

  • Looking for a light-hearted, clean, fun read? Check out Dana Mentink’s newest novel, and Sit, Stay, and Love for a while.

  • Penny Marks says:

I think I will start this review out with “there’s just something about Tippy”. I loved this heartwarming book about an elderly overweight dog and how unconditional love can change even the coldest of hearts. It is amazing to see the transformation and how God’s love helps the characters in this book forgive and grow. This is a must read, feel good book.

  • I LOVED this book! The characters are fun, and interesting. There’s Cal and Gina of course, a variety of supporting cast members in fans and team mates. There’s also a bitter former college team mate turned stalker who is jealous of Cal’s fame, a team mascot who is jealous of Tippy’s fame, and an absentee father who resurfaces. This is a cute, fun read just in time for baseball season!

  • “Sit Stay Love” by Dana Mentink is a light romantic novel, which was a joy to read. Although the romance angle was an ordinary scenario, the presence of a pet was redeeming.

  • Sit, Stay, Love is a wonderful book that will have you both laughing and crying. I really enjoyed this book and I found it to be a wonderful read. I definitely can’t wait till I get a chance to read more from this author.

  • I loved this book with all the funny characters and situations. After I began reading I was not able to put the book down because I needed to find out what was going to happen next.

  • Dana Mentink does a superb job creating a wonderful story about Cal, Gina, Tippy and many other colorful characters in a heart-warming story that you will never forget.

  • Sit Stay Love is a story about loss, learning to love, learning self worth and reconciliation. I enjoyed reading this book. It was a nice change to read a easy going book that flowed and made me laugh.

  • This is such a sweet story! I fell in love with the heroine and how she views life. The story has some great characters and themes through it. It was also fun to catch a glimpse of what it would be like to be a professional baseball player, something I haven’t thought a lot about before, but can imagine it would be crazy. This is a great story for dog and baseball lovers alike!

  • I should start my review of this book by saying that I am a sucker for any books about animals especially dogs or cats. Author Dana Mentink has written a wonderful story about a dog who helps people find love and a real home.

  • This was a cute funny romance book. I loved the Tippy he was the best dog a story could ask for. With all of his antics and stealing things like a crazy dog does, he had me laughing out loud. Now don’t get me wrong I liked the humans in the story as well. Another thing I liked was the sports theme since Cal was a baseball player. Two of my favorite things sports and pets then throw in a little romance a good combination for a story that will keep you turning the pages quickly. At times I found myself getting upset with Cal and feeling bad for Gina but then I kind of understood Cal at the same time. His life is not a normal one. It was nice to watch as Gina and Cal became closer as the story went along. I will definately be watching for the next one in this series.

  • This was such a sweet story!

I absolutely adored reading about Tippy and her humans 🙂

I also LOVE baseball and enjoyed all the baseball references in the story.

This was a super-fun read and I’m looking forward to reading more by this author!

  • Tima Murrell says:

The dog, while a crazy addition, made the book. The characters had dimension and added life to the book as well. I thought the concept of mixing three completely random characters together made the book interesting and helped to bring out the good in all of them. The author did a great job of adding fun and humor to some serious subjects. The touches of faith woven throughout the story were subtle, but well done.

  • This is a book for dog lover’s especially but all pet lovers will find something in common in the unbreakable bonds we share with our pets. There is a great chemistry that forms between Gina, Cal and Tippy as they each work through their own issues and eventually find that unconditional love forms the tightest bond of all. I would rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

  • his book is great, a cute and funny book about an older dog, a cranky pro athlete, and a different dog walker who is typically a school teacher. I could NOT put this book down, from start to finish I was hooked. Dana Mentink writes with authority on dogs, all things baseball including Beep Ball, California, and forgiveness. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction and/or are animal lovers, you will NOT be disappointed.

  • Moments says:

I absolutely loved “Sit, Stay, Love;” Dana has created a funny, light-hearted read that will pull at your heart and leave you smiling at the end.

  • Best Reads says:

Quirky and fun with lots of sweet and savoury bits. Anyone who has been owned by an eccentric dog will adore Tippy! And empathize with Gina! And eventually Cal — though he was a bit of a hard sell at the beginning. 🙂

  • Sit Stay Love by Dana Mentink was an excellent book. I am a sucker for books that have animals as one of the characters because I love animals so much. I enjoyed this book right from the start, and I was sad when it was over because I loved Gina and Tippy.

  • I laughed from Chapter 1. I giggled from Chapter 2. And all the way through. I enjoyed Sit Stay Love. It’s worthy of my 5 star rating

  • Dana Mentink has penned a clever story with quirky yet likeable characters, amusing moments, and a heart-warming romance.

  • Sit, Stay, Love is one of the sweetest romances I’ve read in a while. One of my own priorities in life is to cater to my own dogs’ whims, so Tippy the spoiled pup really captured my heart. She’s definitely the star of the story. Cal and Gina’s story of bonding over their care of one tiny dog is certainly believable and a balm to this dog lover’s soul. There’s nothing better than a dog to brighten up life — or a romance novel!

  • Dana Mentink is a new author for me, but this was such a fun book. It seems so many of today’s romances are built around the same common theme, and it was entertaining to take a new approach by adding a dog as the central character.

  • This book was so much fun to read. I found myself laughing out loud with many of Tippy’s antics. Mentink does a great job in the character development area. Each character seems to come right off the page and I felt as if I knew each one personally. This was a fun and easy read. I loved the book! I think this book would be a great feel good movie! I would pay to see this!!

  • As I suspected this was a super cute read. As the quirky schoolteacher Gina has a lot of mishaps and uh-ohs that give this book a bit of slapstick comedy. Tippy, the dog, is also quirky and was an unexpected gift from Cal’s departed mother. Cal misses his mother dearly and although he really is not interested in the dog the fact that Tippy was his mother’s dog makes him struggle with what to do about her.

  • Sit, Stay, Love is a light, comical romance that you never quite see coming. Gina and Cal are from opposites worlds, one rich and famous and the other just scraping by. Tippy is what holds them together as they learn valuable lessons of forgiveness, hope and love together.

  • Dana Mentink brilliantly writes a tale and draws readers in by connecting it to an elderly dog. Don’t pass up this novel focused on those themes of the idea that family is most important even if it includes a dog who loves cheese balls!

  • “Sit Stay Love” is the perfect spring or summer read, especially when one is in the mood for something light-hearted and encouraging. With a somewhat grouchy major league baseball pitcher and quirky school teacher who is reduced to dog sitting, and of course, Tippy, the real star of this book, the reader is treated to several laugh-out-loud scenes and some pretty sweet romantic ones as well.

  • All in all, this book was so enjoyable! It’s an easy read and I just loved Tippy and her affect on everyone. I’m a huge dog lover so I loved Tippy and her unconditional love for others. A good example of God’s love for us! I highly recommend this book!

  • Annie says:

Sit Stay Love by Dana Mentink is one ADORABLE novel. It’s sweet with the right notes of humor, emotions, romance and even a little mystery.

  • This is a different sort of story than Ms. Mentick’s usual, and she did it in her usual impeccable style. Fans of Ms. Mentick, animal stories, and “finding yourself” stories might be interested in reading SIT, STAY, LOVE. Non-athletic people who are afraid of sposports related stories need not worry. It is very lightly done and in an agreeable, very readable way.

  • I have to admit that the cover of this book really grabbed my attention. A loveable mutt with sad eyes on the cover? A definite must check it out. The title also got me looking. And the story is just as adorable as Tippy. From the first time Cal sees the dog until the last page is read I was engaged in the story as it unfolded.

  • Tippy is the best dog you will ever meet! And you’ll love Cal too! Don’t miss this hilarious, romantic, lovable book that will having you “laughing out loud” and tears rolling down your face.

  • How the author described the character Cal is so different from how entertainment media report the lives of professional/superstar athletes. We often see them as gamblers, womanizers, hard drinkers but this novel did not make any mention of those vices and presented Cal and his teammates as fun-loving dudes sans drugs and alcohol. It might not be realistic but it sure is refreshing to read about a teammate Ag who loves his wife’s pork adobo.

  • I can’t recommend this book highly enough! It’s fun. It’s quirky. It’s delightfully entertaining! It’s uplifting and emotional and full of cute humor and sweet romance and great characters. Whether you love baseball or you just show up for the food, Sit Stay Love and Dana Mentink may make fans of you by the end of the book. Dog lovers, this one needs to be on your wish list for sure!

  • SIT, STAY, LOVE was such an adorable, heartfelt, and fun read! There was emotion, humor, inspiration, sweet romance, one lovable dog, and plenty of family, character, and romantic tension to keep things interesting. Would recommend to dog lovers, romantics, and inspirational romance readers.

  • This book is adorable and fun from the first page! I am a huge dog fan, and Dana did a great job of creating Tippy. She may be geriatric but she has a lot of spunk. The chemistry between Gina and Cal is subtle yet something they can’t deny. Tippy is the catalyst that helps Cal forgive his father that brings about healing between them. One of my favorite reads of the year.
    Highly recommended!

  • From the quirky characters to the humorous antics, I reveled in the charm of this story. While it is a lighthearted romance, Sit, Stay, Love shares a deeper message that will resonate with many readers. Delightfully engaging and entertaining, Sit, Stay, Love is sure to put a smile on your face. Dana Mentink hit a home run with this story, and I would love to read more Tippy tales!

  • All Grown Up says:

Ms Mentink does a great job painting a picture with her words, to draw you in to the scene, and make you feel as if you are on the sidelines of Gina and Cal’s adventures. Sit, Stay, Love by Dana Mentink is a quick read, but a good one. The flow is a good pace right between wondering when this scene will be over and keeping you turning page after page until you realize its 4am and you are still saying “just one more chapter”!

  • WV Stitcher says:

Heart touching story that put a smile on my face. I love that one of the main characters is Tippy the overweight dog, that in itself would have made this book a must read for me, she was truly a character herself, often doing laugh out loud funny things, but the author also provides a sweet story with enjoyable characters that made this book a joy to read.

  • Thank you, Ms Mentink, for giving us a book that helps us see more of the plight that elderly pets face.Thank you also for choosing to donate part of the proceeds from this book to senior dog rescue.

  • By The Book says:

There is a lot to love about this novel. The characters are genuine and relatable with real life emotions, doubts, hurts and fears. The plot is inventive and keeps the pages turning. The faith message is woven seamlessly throughout.

  • Tippy’s story is a fun, adventurous read that will leave you laughing . . . and shaking your head at this surprisingly playful still a pup at heart’s antics.

  • Refreshingly different, funny, touching, romantic, heartwarming…Sit, Stay, Love resulted in a most pleasant reading experience.

  • This is a fun read for everyone. I would recommend this book for any age and if you want a quick afternoon fun read this is the book for you.

  • …I was hoping that this would be a sweet little quirky read and it’s that and more! 😀 I LOVE the characters from main to sub and Tippy out does them all! ;)….

  • I will be honest, I am not typically a lover of dogs, but Tippy stole my heart right from the very beginning of this book. This book is a series of silly, sad, and comforting events that all come together.

  • The idea of this book is beautiful, how an old dog can bring two people together. The only thing is, I’ve read this book a million times before and there was nothing new in this one that set it apart from others, or sparked my interest in any way, shape or form, so I just don’t know. I was bored to tears and slowly worked my way through it while I tried not to fall asleep.

  • This was a fun and humorous read. I love the characters and how real they were with what they were dealing with from careers to family expectations. And who could not love Tippy and baseball? Enjoyable story!

  • If you are looking for a delightful entertaining story, this is definitely one to pick up! It is small but filled with funny quips, a goofy little dog and two totally quirky but irresistible characters. It is short and sweet but I found tears in my eyes more than once, as well as learning some lessons. I really liked Tippy, the overweight picky eater of a dog, being a big feature of the story. An enjoyable read that you can finish in an hour!

  • I admit, I’m a dog lover, so any story which involves dogs catches my attention. I will also admit that Dachshunds are among my least favorite dogs. Dana has given Tippy a captivating disposition, though, which makes her endearing.

You will find yourself laughing at Tippy’s antics, and maybe even shedding a few tears. I am sure I will have to share this book with my daughter, and even my mom!

  • That’s one of the best lessons about the book – about the importance of people. Gina takes people as they come and enjoys the best parts of them. She prioritizes relationships and works hard to keep them that way. Cal is the exact opposite but comes to realize just how lonely that life is. Our busy modern lives keep us separate and apart. Too often we’re like Cal when we should be living like Gina. Tippy reminds us of this.

  • Sit Stay Love is the charming story of three mismatched characters – a major league baseball player named Cal who doesn’t like dogs but has inherited one from his recently deceased mother – an unemployed kindergarten teacher named Gina who finds herself sitting pets due to an unfortunate mishap – and an overweight, geriatric dog named Tippy who will melt your heart from the moment you see his face on the cover of the book!

  • Sit, Stay, Love was a cute, lighthearted tale about Tippy, a dachshund mix stuck in limbo of belonging to anyone after her owner (the hero’s mother) dies.

  • “Sit, Stay, Love” by Dana Mentink is a delightful read. Life has been crazy for me the past few weeks and this book is exactly what I needed. Yes, it has many silly moments, but it is laugh out loud funny and the witty dialogue keeps the reader interested until the very end.

  • I’ll admit that I was a little on the fence when I first saw this book. I couldn’t decide if it’d just one of those dog books that are cheesy or if it’d be something I’d actually enjoy and remember. It was an easy book to read and it was quite enjoyable. I liked all of the characters and Cal and Gina were absolutely funny. This book included some things that I was thrilled, yet surprised to read. It does include a dog, Tippy, but it was wonderful to read about how she included baseball and a few other things. I loved Cal’s uncle and all he had done.

  • This book was so much fun to read. The characters were quirky, and well is there anything that a dog in a romance novel can’t accomplish. I loved that this was a pure romance. The story is based on the development of the characters relationship. And they are interesting people. If you want a quick read that will make you laugh at times this is the book for you.

  • This book is a cute, lighthearted story. It is a fairly quick read that kept my attention the whole time. If you are looking for a fun book that will make you laugh and, possibly cry a little bit, this is the book for you. I think you might enjoy it.

  • Book by Book says:

Tippy has a knack for winning hearts and defying expectations, as she brings a serious-minded baseball player and quirky, but heartbroken dog sitter a bit of necessary fun, adventure, and romance in Dana Mentink’s Sit Stay Love. No dog lover should miss this delightful read.

  • What is Cal Crawford going to do? Author Dana Mentink has written a really nice story. Cal Crawford has been left a little something by his mother who has just passed away. He doesn’t really like dogs so he has to hire someone to watch the dog for him. –

  • When first reading the title of the book “Sit Stay Love”, you might think it is a training guide for your dog. This book is so light hearted such a fun read.

  • This book was an adorable and fast read. The abundance of realistic dialogue increased the pace of the book, and the author incorporates setting in an active way that moves the plot along at the same time as giving the reader a sense of surroundings. The characters are also delightful.

  • WORD Up! says:

Dana Mentink pens some comical moments, some heart-wrenching scenes and some very thoughtful prose and dialogue. There are even a couple surprises. This is a touching romance between a man and a woman, as well as a tribute to the love pets and owners share and love between mother and son that never dies.

  • I read this book over the weekend, and it is a perfect weekend read. Sit Stay Love is a light romantic story about Gina, a former school teacher turned dog sitter, and Cal, a baseball player who has just lost his mother and inherited her senior dachshund, Tippy.

  • “Sit, Stay, Love” is a light-hearted romance that just makes you smile. The story is as cute as the dog on the cover. Dana Mentink made the characters real and easy to relate to, even if one of them is a professional MLB pitcher. This is an easy and delightful read that is any book love and dog lover alike will enjoy reading.

  • I loved how this book is centered around one very lovable dog! Such a cute story with a great message it was such a quirky and yet very enjoyable read. I loved the characters in the book, Gina is super fun and sassy, totally enjoyable and delightful. I grew to appreciate each and every character and was disappointed for the story to end! This book appeases the dog loves and even those just looking for a quick, cute read. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

  • With great characters and a cute romance, I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy contemporary romance with the addition of an adorable and loving dog.

  • The writing grabbed me from the very first sentence, then I was engaged with the characters, baseball pitcher Cal Crawford and Tippy, the old mixed-breed dog he inherited when his mother died. As a cat person, I’ve always thought most dogs were a little stupid, and Tippy is no exception (although she’s more eccentric than stupid).

  • A Book Lover says:

This was a cute, sweet, Christian romance book. It was a little over the top but perfect. I love baseball and this book features a professional baseball player. I am not a huge dog fan but Tippy is so endearing it made up for it. This book was a fun, mostly light, and humorous book. The characters and plot were well developed and I enjoyed reading it. I think it would make a great Hallmark movie and hope they do it. Recommended.

  • The book Sit, Stay, Love by Dana Mentink will have you laughing just as it is supposed to. It is indeed a silly book with a sweet tale. The dog of course is the star of the story so this book is a must read for any dog lovers out there. I promise you will laugh and enjoy this book just as much as I did.

  • This has to be the cutest, and most precious book I’ve read in a long time! Tippy is the star of this story and believe me you will sooo fall in love!! I laughed, I cried, and just enjoyed every single page of this book!!

  • For dog lovers, this book can be hilarious. And for everyone else the romance is really sweet. This is such a gentle, relaxing, pure enjoyment type of book. There’s nothing that’s going to blow your mind but sometimes you just want to sit back and enjoy an easy read.

  • As a huge dog lover, I found this story amusing. The main characters were believable and I didn’t know what was going to happen next. I would read more books by Dana, especially if they involve other fun canine antics.

  • I must admit that I am not a dog person (ducking the flaming arrows), but I thoroughly enjoyed this quirky book.

With charming characters and an engaging storyline, this book is a quick and enjoyable read, while still managing to teach you a thing or two along the way. If you’re a dog lover, you’ll love this book – and if you’re not, you still will! 🙂

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by this Dana Mentink.
