Song of Silence

Song of Silence

Song of Silence (Abingdon, April 2016)

Music taught Lucy love and beauty. Could silence teach her hope?

Lucy and Charlie Tuttle agree on one thing: they’re committed to each other for life. Trouble is, neither of them expected life to look like this. Charlie retired early, but Lucy is devoted to a long-term career . . . until the day she has no choice.

Forced to retire from her position as music educator in a small Midwestern K-8 school, Lucy can only watch helplessly as the program her father started years ago disintegrates before her eyes. As the music fades and a chasm separates her form the passion of her heart, Lucy wonders if her faith’s song has gone silent, too. The musical score of her life seems to be missing all the notes.

When a simple misstep threatens to silence Lucy forever, a young boy and his soundless mother change the way she sees—and hears—everything.

  • Loving music like I do and sharing it with my best friend, this book was fantastic. What an emotional read, but I did not expect anything different for Ruchti. I hung on ever word and I loved Lucy and was in her corner until the very last page.

  • Cynthia Ruchti has written a wonderful piece of art with her new book Song of Silence. Capturing the heart of her characters in a very meaningful and touching way

  • I love how Cynthia can take the most stressful and terrible circumstances and still weave humor into them! 😀 It’s those nuggets of comic relief that make the turmoil bearable in life and in reading! :)…….

  • Although a novel and work of fiction, this story resonated with me. Mrs. Ruchti paints a realistic picture of what it is like when you are faced with events that floor you and make you question your purpose in life.

  • “Song of Silence” by author Cynthia Ruchti is a very beautiful story. This is one of my favorite authors, and I really like to read her books.

  • Tima Murrell says:

This was a complex book of emotions and insight. I would highly recommend this book for several reasons – the writing is exceptional, the thoughts on marriage are spot on, it deals with empty nest and depression, the story is also humorous and entertaining. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by this author.

  • Ruchti has written a thought provoking novel of character transformation. It made me think of how I would respond if my profession and passion were ripped away from me. There are many other issues covered in the book too, like spouses having different expectations of retirement, an adult child (and family) moving back home, the role of music in helping special needs children, and more. This is a great book for reading groups as there is much to discuss.

  • Here’s another homerun from Cynthia Ruchti! One of my favorite authors, Ruchti takes everyday characters and turns them into real people we can relate to. The side stories were delightful. Cynthia Ruchti always nails it, and Song of Silence is a homerun.

  • Cynthia Ruchti has captured my heart again! I laughed . . . and I cried. The story will capture your heart — and your emotions — until you have no choice, but to hang on to the end.

  • This book has a few lessons to teach us as we read it and one of the big ones is to remember not to judge people. I thought this was another hit by this author.

  • Song of Silence is another beautiful offering from master story teller Cynthia Ruchti.
Discover the power of both music and silence to impact and unite lives.
See how Lucy copes as her passion is whipped away from her. And discover the value of a good man, family and friends.
Be blessed by this latest novel from Cynthia Ruchti.

  • Song of Silence has a good story line, but it just didn’t resonate with me. I had a hard time feeling sorry for Lucy because she whines so much. Charlie, bless his heart, tries to help but just seems to get in the way. If you love music, or you’re a musician, you’ll probably relate to Lucy better than I… Cynthia does paint pictures with her writing which, for me, made the book more palatable.

  • There were parts of this book that made me chuckle, and parts that made me tear up. Some bits I could really relate to. . . Other parts I couldn’t relate to at all. Maybe I’m jealous that Lucy figured out her Happily Ever After while mine is still shrouded in mystery, but this was not a book that I enjoyed reading. Someone in a healthier place would probably like it much better.

  • Song of Silence is a wonderful book that will have you in tears one minute and laughing the next. I felt that when reading this author’s books you can place yourself in the character’s shoes. Which if you ask me, it’s pretty cool. I love this author’s books and enjoy how amazing she is with words.

  • A beautiful story of hope, understanding, forgiveness and possibility. My heart broke, I laughed and more importantly I felt very connected Lucy and her family. The ending was so full of hope and I would love to see the next steps in this beautiful family’s life.

  • The IE Mommy says:

While I’m not a musician, I still was able to connect to this book with the marriage theme and with struggling to find new purpose mid life after a path has already been chosen. Life doesn’t always look the way we thought it would and marriage definitely doesn’t. Ruchti does a wonderful job of exploring these aspects.

  • It wasn’t until the final quarter of Song of Silence that I began to feel the emotional pull of the book. This is when one false step forced Lucy to re-evaluate her life. It became impossible for her to return to the life she had known and she realized that there were other options for her. This is where Cynthia Ruchti’s creativity shines its magic and what makes her one of my favorite contemporary fiction authors. Her writing is deep without being difficult to comprehend.

  • I was enthralled from the moment I opened the book until I finished the last page. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this work of fiction is shared with others via friends and family. I have a feeling many can relate to the situations crafted in the storyline. So grab a chair and get ready to be touched deeply by the latest novel from this author’s pen; it’s a magnificent piece!

  • When I pick up a book by Cynthia Ruchti, I know I am in for a treat. While all of her books are hemmed with hope, this one sets a new bar for encouragement for the soul. Were a casual reader to simply skim the novel, the time would be well-spent as the story is engaging. (Although I challenge anyone to simply gloss over any part of this magnificent book!) But for the thoughtful reader, especially one who loves and appreciates music, this tale is a veritable symphony for the soul. […] Ruchti’s exquisite prose begs to be highlighted, quoted, and turned into framed art…

  • Best Reads says:

Oh. Mercy. If ever there’s a book that should be made into a movie, this is it! Profound. Stirring. A real slice of life with all the accompanying grit and absurdity that goes with it. I laughed, I cried…and cried…and cried. Lucy’s story really spoke to my heart.

  • Cynthia knows how to draw the reader into the setting, the characters, and their situations. Love every book she’s written, they’re keepers. Usually once I finish a book I pass it on to a fellow reader but there are a special few I can’t let go of and hers fit that category.

  • Song Of Silence by Cynthia Ruchti was an okay book just not the right fit for me. I have read several books by Cynthia and I have liked all of them but this book just wasn’t the right fit for me.

  • While impeccably written, timely, and with realistic characters, I found the overall tone depressing for me as a reader. I guess that’s a sign the author did a fantastic job conveying the emotions…

…Ms. Ruchti is an extremely talented author and I applaud her for tackling this tough topic and writing it with such style.

  • Song of Silence is sure to strike a chord in the hearts of all who read it! Cynthia Ruchti is a gifted storyteller and has once again shared a beautiful story of hope and healing. I loved this poignant story and highly recommend it!

  • I struggled to get into this book, I slogged through, and while Cynthia’s writing style is impeccable, it is not my favorite of her books. There were moments I literally wanted to shake Lucy. Oy, she frustrated me, it seemed she was so determined to wallow in her situation. I recognize the great writing skill it takes to evoke those feelings from me the reader, but I always love a good story, and this wasn’t it for me.

  • As a musician, I saw a strong comparison between the flow of Song of Silence and the natural flow of a classical piece of music. I suspect perhaps this was intentional, and it was well done.

After a dramatic opening, the song moves into a slower, darker section. Themes and ideas begin to twine through until, in the middle, the tempo increases and a new section begins. Cymbal crashes and dissonance appear, the smooth themes becoming turbulent. And then, as often with good music, the chords resolve into a peaceful conclusion.

Such is the journey in Song of Silence…

  • Moments says:

Cynthia’s latest novel is a masterpiece that will tug at your heart and soul and remain with you long after you finish reading.

  • WOW! This is such an moving and emotional book. I found myself laughing and crying. This book was powerful in my own personal life as I connected with Lucy and found her to be incredibly faithful during a hard season of her life. I loved this book!

  • The plot and characters were great but somehow, I just felt disconnected. I had trouble liking the main character, Lucy. She’s not very relate-able, although age is most likely the culprit here. The pacing was a bit slow, too, for my liking. Overall, I am not that “into” this book. It’s such a shame that I did not really like this. I guess, I am not really one of the targeted audience for this one.

  • Ruchti’s cast of characters are endearing, and the story moves along quickly and keeps the reader’s attention to find out what Lucy Tuttle discovers about her life and the lives of the ones she loves.

  • For most of this story I found myself thinking that this was not a book really suited for where I am in my life. Different stories resonate louder with some people or during some seasons of life than others, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I thought the last portion of this book really shone as Lucy goes through a time of reflection and growth. Cynthia Ruchti is known as a writer of hope, and while I might not have completely related to Lucy, I felt the tug of that hope because hope is universal.

  • Baker Kella says:

In true Cynthia Ruchti form, Song of Silence will pull at your heartstrings, so be sure to keep a box of tissues close by – you’re going to need them! I absolutely LOVED how Cynthia wove musical expressions throughout the plot. You could really feel the musical heartbeat of Song of Silence!

  • I love the personalities of the characters in this book and can’t wait to read another by Ruchti!

  • By The Book says:

Song of Silence is a great book, one that lingered in my mind long after I finished it. It spoke truth and it spoke hope. I loved it and think you will too.

  • I found myself smiling in some parts and definitely crying in others. Definitely needed some tissues. I truly enjoy Cynthia Ruchti’s style of writing, I truly found myself feeling like I was there watching the events of this book. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction and/or music lovers, you will NOT be disappointed.

  • Song of Silence reminded me the meaning in the Heart of Worship, as well as a musical piece that brings to the forefront, love in relationships, from marriage to friendship to parentage, and all this includes love in God. All the characters round out the notes perfectly, and as a romantic at heart, might I add, Charlie’s wit, simplicity and support of Lucy reinforces his “good man” status. The multiple arcs that play on in this musical score makes it interesting, and as the composer, Cynthia Ruchti gave us a masterpiece.

  • I have always been a fan of Ruchti, but this book did nothing for me.

Lucy’s character got on my last nerves. When she found out her job had been eliminated, she acted like the world had ended. Pretty much the entire book includes Lucy moping around with no desire to find something else to make her happy. Her willingness to let this one event dictate her entire life grated on my nerves in this most annoying way.

  • This is such a great novel as I find myself considering entering the work force at the same age as Lucy is and wondering how I will be received. For me, this one easily goes down as a 5 out of 5 stars and a Reader’s Discussion Guide is included for those real book clubs to enjoy! I hope Cynthia decides to expand this into a series of the women we meet in Lucy’s HHATT group! Would love to know their stories!

  • SONG OF SILENCE was a story that I connected with on so many levels. It was heartfelt, humorous, had lovable characters, had some down-to-earth realistic romance, a little heartbreak, and so many sweet moments of both discovery and beauty in the small things. If you’ve enjoyed Ruchti’s other books or enjoy Christian Fiction, this is definitely a book to pick up!

  • I loved the story of Lucy and I think that as a teacher I can relate to her. It was more of a tearjerker than I’m used to but it was really well done. Definitely worth the read.

  • This is such a great book for educators and music lovers! The themes that flow throughout the pages are ones that we all can relate or have experienced first hand. It’s definitely worth the read.

  • All in all—if you couldn’t already tell—I loved this novel and can’t imagine giving it anything other than all five bookshelves. Cynthia really hit it out of the park with this one, and I know it will be one of my favorite novels of all time for years and years to come. It has a place on my all-time favorites list, that’s for sure, and I know I will be lending my copy out to all of my reader friends. I highly recommend it, but I would also advise keeping a box of tissues close by when you read it, because I can’t imagine it not touching your heart at least half as much as it touched mine.

  • This book will take your heart on a journey. Is it better to lose your music or never to have had in in the first place?

Amazingly silence helped her find a new source of music. If one listens carefully, sometimes family drama can do that.

  • I really enjoyed this book and it helps to really put your own problems in prospective. I don’t think that the description does the book justice but it was an amazing journey following Lucy through her process of self discovery after the music program that her father built and she spent her life working with the children was cut from the school.

  • I definitely related with Lucy. I know what it is like to have quiet and enjoy every minute of it, only to have it interrupted with returning children back to the nest. The book flows from chapter to chapter with ease, I laughed out loud, and was brought to tears. This book will remain with me and I will be thinking about the characters for days to come. I know it’s a good book when I start praying for the characters.
    Highly recommended!!!

  • Cynthia Runchi’s main character in Song of Silence is a woman in her late fifites who was laid off from her beloved job as a music teacher when the program was the victim of budget cuts. Her husband has recently retired. He was looking for a passion and when she was laid off, he assumed she’d join him at it. She feels smothered, and yet she sees her husband’s irritating actions for what they are–expressions of love. He wants to spend more time with her and to do things together; she feels smothered and seems to want to be left alone to wallow in her grief. The book is Christian fiction and mentions prayer and faith but unless you are anti-faith, I don’t think there is enough religion in the book to turn you off. Grade: B+

  • Wow, I was surprised how much I could relate to this book! I love how Cynthia captured the struggles and triumphs of Lucy as she navigates the new waters of being forced into retirement. An excellent read!

  • Get ready to shed a few tears with Lucy and Charlie. And then be ready to have yourself grow slack-jawed by the beauty of God’s grace! This is a HOMERUN of a novel! Truly, a thing of beauty!!

  • With her exquisitely engaging style, each word in perfect pitch, Cynthia Ruchti creates a beautiful story of healing and humor and hope. A story for the forced-to-retire teacher, for the frustrated wife, for the mother of adult children. A story for everyone whose life failed to proceed according to plan. Vivid characters, wry wit, and gentle truth held me captive from the first page to the last. This is a book that will linger in my heart for a long time!

  • I’ve only recently been introduced to Cythia Ruchti’s books, and it makes me wish i knew about her sooner. This book instantly caught my attention and it never stopped. Though at times I got kinda frustrated with it.

  • This is a prime example of Ruchti’s “hemmed in hope” stories. Beautiful prose and raw emotions combine in this highly engaging and uplifting tale. I read hundreds of books every year, and this has definitely earned a place in my top five for the year!

  • I’ve never been much of a pianist myself- though I do take lessons – but thanks to Cynthia’s excellent writing, I can easily relate to the main character in this story.

I cannot begin to imagine how I would go on if I were forced to stop writing . . . but it’s easy to put myself in Lucy’s shoes.

Despite the apparent loss of hope, it is a wonderful story – one I highly recommend!

  • This book really spoke to my heart. Changes can come in so many ways and can be devastating if we let them be. This story shows how faith and love can really pull us through even the most difficult things in our lives. I love this book and highly recommend it!

  • I absolutely loved this book, but I was so drawn into it it was hard at times to read. The emotions and characters are very raw and real and their struggles are incredibly identifiable. I was so glad I kept going even though it was tough to read when the main character is struggling the most. The joy found as she makes her way is wonderful!!

  • Cynthia Ruchti’s writing in Song of Silence, as in each of her books that I have read, is filled with emotion, passion, and expressive description that captivates from beginning to end.

As I read Song of Silence, there were times I came very close to laughing out loud and others when I had to wipe the tears from my eyes, times I would have loved to share with Lucy and others I hope never to face. A story that brings out that range of emotions is a great read that I give a hearty 5 stars!

  • Cynthia Ruchti’s writing is full of honesty, humor, faith and hope. Her characters are beautifully flawed and a joy to discover.

  • This was a beautiful book with so much heart, depth and reality in it. I have always appreciated Ms. Ruchti books but this book really exceeded my expectations and was her best work yet.

  • My favorite character is little four-year-old Evan. I imagine him to be an adorable, well-behaved child. He is a four-year-old with Asperger’s and has the personality of a toddler. (pg. 189) His mom is deaf.

  • Book by Book says:

I’ve realized Cynthia Ruchti has a knack for writing beautifully emotional stories with authentic characters, and Song of Silence is no exception. An excellent choice for readers of contemporary fiction (and especially those who also love music), it is a well-told and heartfelt story. I highly recommend it.

  • I have read almost all of the books by Cynthia Ruchti and I think her books are getting better with each book she writes. I love how deeply she makes her reader connect to the characters and the details she goes into when giving her characters personalities. I could feel the pain Lucy was experiencing all throughout the book and the pain Charlie felt because he couldn’t relieve hers by making her dream of teaching music hang on just a bit longer.

  • This is the first book I’ve read by Cynthia Ruchti. It’s fresh, with realistic characters. Heart touching story. Be sure to check it out for yourself.

  • Once I made it past the slow start I fell in love with the characters and the story. It was a lovely book and the story was filled with so much encouragement for overcoming adversities in our lives. I promise you the greatest gift can be found within the pages of Song of Silence.

  • Poignant … elegant … intelligent … funny … compelling … a classic. A gem of wisdom and inspiration. A musical composition that speaks to the innermost recesses of the heart. Song of Silence is all this and more. Song of Silence hooked me from the beginning and never let go. It made me laugh and cry … encouraged me to identify with the characters in a personal way … led me to think, look inward, and reflect on how God has worked in my life. Highly recommended to readers of all ages.

  • I am a HUGE fan of Cynthia Ruchti. I have read just about every one of her books & they always leave me wanting more books from her. Her characterizations are deep and true to the way she weaves the story and the characters. She makes it feels like you are right there in the room with them, going through the trials and joys of their lives.

  • I enjoyed this story very much. It showed how we should let God control our lives and to never give up hope. This was very well written and very true to life.

The emotions that Lucy had to work through were similar to how I felt when I had to give up teaching because we relocated. It was a grieving process that was hard for some to understand. Lucy’s solution was an encouragement to me.

  • Once again, Cynthia Ruchti has written a beautifully told story that will engage your heart, may tease some tears from your eyes, and inspire you all at the same time…”Song of Silence” is one of those stories that brings you into the midst of the character’s deep emotions, making it all the sweeter when you join their journey from a place of pain to one of triumph.

  • Cunthia Ruchti writes a story that will grip your heart in the beginning, and wont let go until the end. Since I enjoy music, playing music instead of singing, I felt a special attachment to Song of Silence. Lucy and Charlie’s story is a story of love, forgiveness, restoration and blessings.

  • This is a slow moving book that covers quite a bit. First there’s the cut of the arts programs at the school where Lucy works. This is a very real problem facing schools across the nation. Next Ruchti tackles marriage and family and throws a deaf character in the mix as well as a child with Aspergers. There is a lot going on here but it all makes sense and is relatable. Ruchti’ s strength is writing with humor about the everyday in a way that the reader can find their own message. It works.

  • As I read the book, I found myself stopping to mark passages about marriage, silence, and more. At times it seemed like I was reading a marriage or retirement advice book. but never in a boring way. Lucy and her family’s story always took the forefront, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Song of Silence is such a passionate and emotional read! The characters are full of depth and life, and the story moves along seamlessly. I enjoyed this very much. It is an easy read, but with complicated ideas and form. This was the perfect rainy day cup of cocoa book for me this last week! Highly recommended!

  • Half way through my heart was touched. I have to say the first half of this book was a struggle. Honestly I had to push myself to continue reading this book. My feelings were that the first half was unnecessary. If the book had started on pg 153 I would have been totally into it.

  • This is the third book I have read by Cynthia, I enjoyed reading it as much as the first two. When I have to pause to reflect about what I just read then I know it is a great book.

  • The characters feel so real. Cynthia developed them so deeply that you feel like you know them personally. I found myself caught up in their emotions and troubles as well as the way God moved in their lives in a very special way. It was so easy to see through their story how God has done similar things in my life. This is a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it to you!

  • Cynthia Ruchti successfully created a meaningful character in Lucy whose trials and triumphs are mirrored in the lives of thousands of women from different walks of life.
