  • Are you a big C.S. Lewis fan? This book is for you then. Just published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of C. S. Lewis’s death, this complete guide covers all of Lewis’ works, from his literary criticism to Narnia.

Until I read Colin Duriez’ new book, I was only aware of C. S. Lewis’s children’s books. I had grown up reading them and adored them but I didn’t know about all his other works. C. S. Lewis’s work is known around the world and very well regarded but it is so unbelievable that even enthusiasts like me are often only aware of such a small part of his complete work. He actually wrote so much more, including some amazing science fiction pieces and literary criticism. This detailed volume from Colin Duriez brings together all aspects of C S Lewis’s life and his most intimate thoughts. One of the things I really liked about it, being the organized gal that I am is that the book is arranged in alphabetical order. It makes it easy to find exactly what you want. The book begins with a piece from 1943 called The Abolition of Man. It is described as “almost my favorite”-to Wormwood, a character in The Screwtape Letters. It ends with a description of Zardeenah, a Calormene moon goddess in The Horse and His Boy. This book is a perfect gift for a bibliophile or who is interested in C. S. Lewis and wants to learn more about him, his thought, his works, and his life.

  • I am familiar with CS Lewis thanks to the classic fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia which I adore. The A-Z of CS Lewis: A Complete Guide to His Life, Thoughts and Writings provided me with a in depth look into a man who was very complex yet very interesting. I also was provided glimpses of his other works that I have now choose to read thanks to The A-Z of CS Lewis. I am personally interested in reading his fictional works in the area of Christianity.

  • The IE Mommy says:

If you like to read dictionaries then you will love The A-Z of C.S. Lewis as a resource. It is a great tool that would be a companion to have on hand when reading works by C. S. Lewis.

  • I thought I knew quite a bit about Lewis. I’d read all his fiction and many of his nonfiction books. But as I perused this collection on the prolific author, I realized there was much more to know about him. I like the way this book integrates Lewis’ fiction with his nonfiction to give an idea what Lewis believed. This is a great resource to return to time and again.

  • For myself, Mere Christianity, Chronicles of Narnia, and The Screwtape Letters are the first pieces of work that come to mind when someone mentions C.S. Lewis. I am guessing if you are reading this review that you too may have heard of those titles? But did you know that Lewis wrote many pieces of work, including science fiction, that are not so well-known? The authors purpose in writing this book is to give an exploration and discovery into the world of C.S. Lewis. Written in alphabetical order this book is like a dictionary of the life of C.S. Lewis. It includes introductions and summaries of major and minor works that Lewis pinned as well as characters in his stories, articles, quotes, and letters he wrote, and places and people that were a part of or impacted the life of Lewis.

  • Many times I will be thinking or talking to someone about something from a book I have read and I forget which book it was in or I forget the name of a person. With this book I don’t have to go back and look through all the books that C.S. Lewis wrote, I just just look it up alphabetically. My nine year old was listening to his teacher read “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe” in his classroom for the past few weeks and he would come home and look stuff up in the book every day. This book is a great addition to my home library.

  • The A – Z of C. S. Lewis is a comprehensive introduction to C. S. Lewis’s life, family, friends, career, marriage, and writings, as well as the worlds he created, the creatures that he imagined, and the studies he delighted in. It’s also a volume that I wish that I had had close at hand when I was reading many of Lewis’s works. The entries (in encyclopedic form, alphabetically listed) provide rich background for practically every important aspect of Lewis’s life, thought and works. An asterisk clues the reader in to the fact that there is another important entry to be found elsewhere in this volume.

The entries provide enough information to enable the reader to better appreciate Lewis’s writings, without boring the reader or inundating the reader with a glut of inconsequential details.

  • This is a nice book of the life and writing of one of the greats. This is strictly a reference book but covers everything. C.S. Lewis was a great writer and this book will only magnify that fact and you go through this book and realize the scope of his work.

It will encourage you to pick up one of C S Lewis’s books that maybe you haven’t read before. This would make a great gift for a Lewis fan.

  • I found this book just fun to read from cover to cover, however, it is also a wonderful reference book for looking up what he writes about different issues and subjects.

This is a must have book for any C.S. Lewis fan and, personally, I think it’s a must-have book for any Christian looking to enhance their Christian library. It’s so full of wonderful information on God’s Word, you will truly be blessed by this book!!

  • The A-Z of CS Lewis is a wonderful companion to any of Lewis’ writings and to have at hand for personal study and investigation of his works, life, family, friends, and career, as well as an inside look into the worlds he created, the creatures he imagined and the studies he delighted in. Conveniently alphabetized and concluded with a full bibliography of Lewis’s canon, Duriez leaves no stone unturned nor term unexplained so this reference will be equally useful for the Lewis novice or expert. Duriez’s definitions are concise and complete with cross-references to facilitate understanding of CS Lewis’ theology and literary criticism. Colin Duriez honours his subject with the diligence of his research.

  • This is the kind of book that fans of C.S. Lewis have been waiting for. Everything is in alphabetical order so it is a very useful reference book.

  • I was very excited when I was asked to review this book. The book tells the story of C.S. Lewis’ life in depth with each letter in chapters so it is easy to use.

  • By The Book says:

If you are a serious student of C. S. Lewis or just want to know more about this influential author — his life, works and thoughts, you need to get The A-Z of C. S. Lewis. Filled with everything you need to know, this book is a well-researched and exhaustive reference. It contains listings for the important people and places in Lewis’ life, the characters and settings of his major works, references to his essays and lectures and the basic beliefs he held. Duriez also includes a detailed bibliography including posthumous works and criticism and biography. This book is a great companion for all your Lewis reading. It certainly opened my eyes to a world beyond Narnia and Mere Christianity.

    Recommended.

  • I loved scanning through this book. I am a big fan of C.S Lewis and am so intrigued by his ideas on life. I had a great time looking through different Narnia definitions that were throughout this book.
If you are a big fan of C.S Lewis, you’ll want to pick up this for you book shelf collection.

  • I didn’t expect to be so easily sucked into this book…but I was. As a devotee of the life and writings of C.S. Lewis from the time I was nine, the man has long since claimed my fascination and admiration. Even so, I didn’t know how much I didn’t know. But, just as in The Last Battle when Aslan leads his faithful children “higher up and deeper in”, so I found myself drawn into this book: into the cross-references and obscure details I’d never before uncovered. An hour slipped quickly away as I flipped from page to page. And I came away from it even more impressed with the breadth and depth of this man.

  • To say that The A-Z of C.S. Lewis is a treasure trove of information is an understatement.
Through extensive research, Colin Duriez has compiled an encyclopedia of C.S. Lewis’ life, thought and writing. The author includes arcane bits of biographical information, details of Lewis’ friendships and associations, his fiction as well as non-fiction and academic works. This compendium of facts is arranged in alphabetic format, allowing the Lewis aficionado can burrow deep to find new and fascinating insights into the mind and works of one of the giants of 20th Century Christianity.

Whether you’re a fan of the Narnia Series, Screwtape, or his many apologetic works, The A-Z of C.S. Lewis is the book for you. Five Stars — highly recommended.

  • The A-Z of C S Lewis: A Complete Guide to His Life, Thoughts and Writingsis without a doubt an accessible treasure chest of information about C.S. Lewis and his writing. I’ve enjoyed looking through this book and remembering key characters and passages I had almost forgotten and then finding some new ones from works I haven’t read yet (but will soon!). It has become a second awakening for me in regards to Lewis and his writings; a reminder that I have not exhausted the joy that his reading brings to me. I think it’s a fantastic book and a great addition to any library, especially to those who would consider themselves a fan. I can’t recommend it enough.

  • Unlike most book reviews I have done, this is not a book where I sit down and start reading at page one and then ‘finish’ at the end. Instead, I spent time reading entries that appealed to me much like anyone using an encyclopedia might do. Only, this one had me going down a few rabbit trails as one entry my cross reference several other connected entries. This is a book that I can see being pulled off the shelf many times throughout the years to just get clarification on something or possibly look for the next selection written by C.S. Lewis to read. I’m already creating a list!

  • First off, this book is exactly what the subtitle says it is “An encyclopedia of his life, thought and writings.” Don’t let that word “encyclopedia” scare you though. Although I’m sure a huge, heavy encyclopedia volume (or two) could be written about Lewis, this isn’t it. This is a nice, novel-sized hardcover book that you can read without exhausting your wrist and arm muscles.

  • How can so much information be packed in to one little book.
Mr. Duriez really knows his Stuff.
This is a wonderful reference book and covers every bit of C.S. Lewis work.
This book will make you want to grab one of C.S. Lewis’ books and read it.
What a wonderful gift this would be a Lewis fan.
I gave this book 5 stars. Very well put together.
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review.

  • What an invaluable resource; a complete and thorough guide to the complete works of C.S. Lewis. I’m not sure if anyone is more quoted than C.S. Lewis. Now to have a complete guide to aid in understanding this brilliant mind and deeply thoughtful heart is such a blessing! Duriez provides an encyclopedic overview of Lewis’s “life, family, career, marriage and his writings, the worlds he created, the creatures he imagined and the studies he delighted in.”

  • Written with samples of various writings of Lewis it is organized so readers can locate information related to this author, speaker and teacher. In the back of the book is an extensive Bibliography for those in the audience who desire to pursue further knowledge or understanding of topics, people or anything related to Lewis.

  • This is a really neat reference book. I love the idea of easily locating the characters and settings of the books I love by Mr. Lewis (Narnia), but also just flipping through and finding new things to read and books to pick up. It has certainly peaked my interest for more of his work. If you are a fan, or think you might be, this is a book for your reference shelf.

  • I am a C.S. Lewis fan, though I haven’t read all of his books I loved what I have read. This book is basically a Lewis encyclopedia of his writings and life. I think this book would be a great companion while reading any of his books, it gives detail on every aspect of his books. It lists places and people in his books and explains the who, the what, the where, and the why. While this book was not what I was expecting it’s a great book to have on hand!
I recommend to anyone who is reading C.S. Lewis and to those who like details!

“I received this book from Litfuse for free in exchange for an honest review.”

  • This book is for you if you are reading Narnia or one of his other books for school, or want to learn more about this Narnia everyone is talking about. If your a C.S. Lewis fan in general, you will love this book. I love the ease of finding information. Now when my son asks me a Narnia question, as he often does, lol, I will be able to quickly and easily find an answer for him. And we both will be happy.

An excellent reference book for all ages.

  • I can honestly say this is one of the best books I have added to my personal library in a long time. My whole family was interested in it and I am sure we will use it often. if you are a true fan of his works, I think this is one book you should have!

  • If you are a fan of C.S. Lewis, if you enjoy reading reference books, or if you love learning little known facts and trivia about prominent people, then The A – Z Of C.S. Lewis by Colin Duriez deserves a spot on your bookshelf!

This book contains alphabetical entries and cross-references on anything and everything you’ve ever wanted to know about C.S. Lewis’s life if only you’d known to ask!

If you are only familiar with slices of C.S. Lewis’s life, you’ll be surprised to learn the breadth and depth that his life spanned.

It takes a lot of research and imagination to delve into all of the corners of a person’s life – to pull out the pertinent parts – and to piece them together in a logical yet compelling manner.

Kudos to Colin for providing us with an invaluable reference.

  • This hardcover book is a MUST HAVE for avid C.S. Lewis readers.

This would make a wonderful gift. Though I have not read all of this author’s books, I was absolutely fascinated by the amount of information packed into this book.

I think this item would be especially helpful to newer readers who may have a hard time understanding the author’s writings. Overall, highly recommended!

  • I am a devout fan of C.S. Lewis so for me this book is utterly perfect. Where else can you so easily access all of his famous sayings as well as be able to look up anything significant in his life? For anyone who is even remotely interested in Lewis this simply is a must! Colin Duriez is quite the authority on Lewis and Tolkien having written numerous books on each, all of which are wonderful.

This book would make an excellent present or would be a welcome addition to any library,to put up there right next to ‘Mere Christianity’ or “The Screwtape Letters”.I simply cannot recommend this book enough.

  • I found this to be a very interesting book. The introduction gave me a peek into just who C.S. Lewis was. I did not read the book cover to cover but rather browsed through it. I found it to be an excellent reference book. I was able to read one entry and find links to corresponding entries. It was a bit like taking a journey through the book. One entry lead to another criss-crossing through the book. That made for great browsing. I was also able to look up specific topics and references and get some background information that gave me greater understanding of some of the things I read in The Chronicles of Narnia. I’d like to read more of Lewis’ writing with this book by my side. I think this would be a valuable text in a college or high school classroom as well a handy book to add to pleasure reading. Well done Mr. Duriez! Five stars.

  • I have always been a huge fan of C.S. Lewis’s work, but there was so much I didn’t know about him! In “The A-Z of C.S. Lewis” by Colin Duriez, readers are introduced to every aspect of Lewis’s life, in Encyclopedia form! Although I definitely wouldn’t consider this a light read, I greatly enjoyed reading this book in it’s entirety!

  • A very nice hardcover copy, this book will be enjoyed by those who have read C.S. Lewis’s works, or wish to further explore what he has written. In alphabetical listings, peers, locations and characters within his writings are explained and in which volume they are mentioned. This is a listing, not a narrative, in encyclopedic form.

  • Veronica's 'Views says:

This is a fascinating book that combines such a wide range of topics related to Lewis, from characters he wrote to places he visited to ideas he held. I especially like the asterisks that mark words in a description and that you can then look up those words if you want to find out more about that topic. I enjoy cross-references; they can lead you down many an interesting bunny trail!

  • Subtitles, A Complete Guide to His Life, Thoughts and Writings, this book is just that- a reference book to all things Lewis! Having read pretty much about 80% of everything Lewis wrote, I say this with fact! i really enjoyed how it is laid out as an encyclopedia type tome, so that if you are reading one of his works, you could turn to it and look up something, get info on it, and then return to your reading. By having primary characters included, it is helpful if you haven’t read say a previous book, that alludes to a character in another book or writing of his! Which really makes this book the ultimate reference book for reading Lewis!

  • If you love C.S. Lewis, you must get this book. A very well encyclopedic gathering of all things Lewis. I learned a lot about his life and writings. My husband has claimed this book for himself next, and he doesn’t do that normally!

  • What an excellent resource for everything C. S. Lewis! This book is carefully and meticulously researched and compiled into an interesting, extremely readable volume on the life and work of C. S. Lewis. This book is definitely a keeper.

  • I did find the book to be very interesting. As I’ve not read a lot by Lewis, there were entries that I am not familiar with; anything that wasn’t from the two C. S. Lewis books I have read I didn’t know about.

Some of the entries are very short, such as “Lilygloves” {a chief mole in Prince Caspian…; page 172} and “pavender” {a rainbow colored fish found in Narnia…; page 233}. While others are pages long, such as “Owen Barfield” {a close friend of Lewis’s; pages 39-42}.

While it is a nice little encyclopedia, I’m not really sure how often I will actually use it. Perhaps when I come across others’ remarks about Lewis’s works, I will pull out my little C. S. Lewis encyclopedia and have a better understanding.

I received this book free from LitFuse.

  • The subtitle for this book is “An encyclopedia of his life, thought, and writings,” and an encyclopedia is exactly what this is. Entries vary in length from one sentence to several pages. One thing I really appreciate is that every word within an entry that has its own entry is denoted with an asterisk—and practically anything I had a question about did have its own entry. It’s very easy to lose 30 minutes or an hour going from one entry to a related one, and so on. This book is fascinating!

  • C.S. Lewis is one of the best known authors in Literature, whether Christian or Secular. His books were written many years ago, but are still read and enjoyed by millions of people around the globe! I know I personally have read a number of them, both as text books in college and for personal growth and study. So this book is a huge hit in our home, for both myself and my husband.

  • This book does an excellent job of adding breath and depth to the already rich work and life of C.S. Lewis. The book does not read like an encyclopedia at all but an easy, captivating read. I really like how this book is set up in encyclopedia style. It makes it easy to find any information you may be looking for. This book has reignited my love for C.S. Lewis’ works. There are so many works that I did not know even existed before reading The A-Z of C.S. Lewis. I look forward to reading these “newly discovered works” along with rereading my favorites. This book is a must have companion guide to anyone who wants to know about Lewis’ life or his writings.

  • I have a confession – I have never, ever read C.S. Lewis. I’ll let the gasping quiet before I continue. I have watched the movies of Narnia and have listened to the audio drama of the Screwtape Letters and have enjoyed them, but for some reason I’ve never been able to get into the books – but after reading through this book by Colin Duriez I will try to change that this year.

  • Initially I thought this book was best if you were a real C.S Lewis aficionado, but that’s not its only audience.
Even if you know nothing of Lewis’ remarkable mind, The A-Z of C.S Lewis will surely instill curiosity in you to know more.

More and more I see why Lewis is much quoted by Ravi Zacharias and Eric Metaxas.
Now I want to read more of Lewis’ books, and I see several more books about Lewis written by Colin Duriez to check out.
I’ve read The Four Loves, ‘Til We Have Faces {it’s time to read that again} The Screwtape Letters {hilariously relevant!} and The Chronicles of Narnia.

    C. S Lewis readers would not go wrong committing some of their own financial resources to procuring a copy of this book. It’s a pocket-sized encyclopedia of Lewis’ thought, times, works, loves and life

The book is arranged in a literal A-Z encyclopedic format. Also included in this resource is a bibliography of C.S. Lewis’s writings, Posthumous writings and collections and select list of books about C.S. Lewis. Whether you are a seasoned student of Lewis or are just developing a curiosity about him, I can highly recommend this resource!

  • What more can a reader ask for than an encyclopedia dedicated to exploring the life, thoughts and writings of one special one author? Especially because this author wrote my most adored children’s novels which I am sure many of you know the name, The Chronicles of Narnia.

This book is literally A-Z, and acts like any other encyclopedia. The depth of this book is remarkable! Duriez was so dutiful and tactful at sharing a wide range of engaging information about the great author.

Well researched and recommended to the sky and back if you adore anything C.S.Lewis, be it Narnia, short stories, essays or even quotes this book does him well. It’s a work of art.

  • Fruitbearers says:

The book includes tons of fascinating facts about this brilliant thinker and storyteller. Readers will be able to explore C.S. Lewis’s world to their heart’s content and discover different aspects of his thoughts and imagination. Did you know that he wrote poems, too? Cross-references are quite helpful. At the end of the book, you will find a list of C.S. Lewis’s writings and a list of books written about C.S. Lewis. If you’re a C.S. Lewis’ s fan, you’ll really appreciate this book.

  • This hardcover book is truly a thorough encyclopedic study of C.S. Lewis. As an accomplished author, intellectual, apologist, and a fascinating person in his own right, Lewis is a worthy topic to study and reference when teaching my children about Biblical worldview. We will use this book often in our studies for years to come.

  • Moments says:

Colin Duriez has created “The A-Z of C.S. Lewis: an encyclopedia of his life, thought and writings,” and this is a must-have for anyone whom is a fan of C.S. Lewis. This book is an amazing collection of C.S. Lewis’ work that has been enjoyed for so many years. People and places from C.S. Lewis’ life and his books are explained in this collection and it is a fascinating escape into his world. This is a wonderful, hardcover edition that will be treasured by each and every fan of C.S. Lewis.

  • Prey Species says:

Duriez has placed a vast amount of information between the covers of The A-Z of C.S. Lewis. The text is in encyclopedia format and compiled into alphabetical order from A-Z. Topics range from definitions of words, characters and creatures found in his writings to detailed descriptions of each of his works including those that never reached publication. Examples under A include allegory, Arnom, albatross and “After Ten Years.” Fans of C.S. Lewis will enjoy learning more about their favorite Lewis creations. This book is not an easy read and serves best as a reference guide. Individuals looking to gain familiarity with C.S. Lewis literature may do well to consider pairing this resource with a collection of his works such as “A Year With C.S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works”

  • Working in a library daily I come across tons of books, but I have to admit with many authors I might know their most popular work, but not all of their work. Many books spread through word of mouth, but that does not mean the books you hear about are the only great ones the authors have written. The A-Z of C.S. Lewis, gave myself a chance to be educated about a beloved author and I have to say there was a lot of information in this book that I had no clue about.

  • The A-Z of C.S. Lewis is a must have book for any fan of C.S. Lewis. It is such a wonderful resource! The book is an encyclopedia of all of C. S. Lewis’ work! It is truly a wealth of information and facts about his life and writing. Colin Duriez has done a wonderful job of compiling all of this information into one book!

  • I love the writings of C.S. Lewis. I was given the chance to read the book A-Z of C.S Lewis by Colin Duriez. I was familiar with C.S Lewis and his many children’s books especially ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ so found this book very interesting as it opened my eyes to a lot more of C.S Lewis. This book brings together a lot of the writings and information together into one book. It is a little hard to read and takes a little persevering. I did learn a lot of things but I felt I had to work at it.

The main reason it was so overwhelming is because so much knowledge is packed into this little book!

This is not a book I could sit and read all the way through at once. However I love having this sat on my bookshelf to turn to as a reference or flick through when interested. It contains quotes and even information on places that C.S. Lewis had visited. It’s very interesting.

This is definitely an excellent resource for all C.S. Lewis fans.

  • A favorite part of the book is reading about Lewis’s view of myth and his use of it in writing. Myth is”imaginative fiction and poetry”. In reading a myth story, we see the world through a different lens. We are learning in a way which does not feel like learning. It’s a perfect teaching tool, for both the young and mature reader.

  • Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Lewis’ death, The A-Z of C S Lewis is thoroughly researched and delightful book. This is a great addition to the library of any Lewis fan, even ones who perhaps have only previously been introduced to one aspect of his myriad works. There’s so much! It will add to your knowledge of his works and understanding of the ideas behind them, and the arrangement of the book makes it easy to move from topic to topic–although I found it awfully easy to get side-tracked.

  • A Must have reference book for any C. S. Lewis Fan. Makes it easy to look things up that might confuse you with easy to understand entries. Great book to have handy while you are reading this great author’s works.

  • This is an amazing book. If you’ve ever read anything by C.S. Lewis, you need to read this book. If you’ve never read anything by C.S. Lewis, you need to read this book. Then you’ll want to read every C.S. Lewis book you can get your hands on.

Thank you, Mr. Duriez, for all the work you put into this book.

  • Wow what an amazing tribute on the 50th anniversary of C. S. Lewis. This is a really interesting and entertaining book. If you are a C. S. Lewis fan, you need to get a copy of The A-Z of C. S. Lewis by Colin Duriez. Duriez does a fantastic job of complying together everything about the life of this legendary author. I really don’t know how Duriez packed so much information in the pages of one book, but he does it, and does a fantastic job of it. Overall, this book is jammed packed with C. S. Lewis inside and out! I highly recommend this book to everyone, because this is a book that anyone who reads will surely enjoy

  • …This encyclopedia covers a vast array of Lewis topics. His writings, his personal life and career. It’s in alphabetical order, making it easy to look up topics and while there’s a significant amount of information, it’s easy to follow and not overwhelming. I enjoyed reading the discussion of themes in his work and the people and events who influenced him (one example – I know, I’m all about examples in this post – his mom and the impact of her death. Oh and did you know both him and Tolkien lost their moms at a young age???). Plus reading about characters in his books makes me want to reread them all over again!…

  • The A-Z of C.S. Lewis is like a dictionary, encyclopedia and thesaurus of everything C.S. Lewis! I had no idea he had written so many other things outside of the Chronicles of Narnia and was so intrigued to see what some of his other works encompassed. Many of the excerpts in this edition have led me to be intrigued by other works of his.

The main reason this book is being used in our house so much right now is because my 11 year old son is reading his way through the Chronicles of Narnia and finds it helpful to have explanations of the characters, locations, etc.

The A-Z of C.S. Lewis is a one stop shop for everything C.S. Lewis related and a great addition to any homeschool library collection.

  • This work of non-fiction is a great collection of C. S. Lewis’s life and work. It contains a lot of interesting facts that I had not known and that I will enjoy reading again. My one complaint is that I wished a few things would have gone a little more in depth.

  • Cummins Life says:

I think this is a super fun book! While I personally have not read this book cover to cover (and don’t necessarily plan to in one sitting), I happen to love C.S. Lewis and everything of his that I have read up to this point. I remember about this time last year discovering The Screwtape Letters. I didn’t even know they existed prior to that and it made me wonder what else of C.S. Lewis works that I was missing out on.

This is such a great reference book and a great way to discover more about Lewis and his works. I have enjoyed flipping through it and with its comprehensiveness I can make my list of other works I want to read! And while I haven’t made my way through this entire encyclopedia yet, I do plan to.

  • This book is an incredible resource for those who enjoy the works of C. S. Lewis. The individual summaries are extremely easy to read, so they are appropriate for even a middle schooler, yet the information is quite extensive. Add this book to your church library or gift it to a friend along with a copy of the Screwtape Letters for a good read.

  • When I first received, “The A-Z of C.S. Lewis: A Complete Guide to His Life, Thoughts and Writings”, my initial thoughts was that it would be like a biography or a collection of his quotes, but what I discovered instead is basically an encyclopedia collection of everything, C.S. Lewis, that makes a great companion piece for fans of him and his writings.

  • Let’s do word association. What comes to mind when I say C. S. Lewis? Perhaps that he was friends with J. R. R. Tolkien. Maybe that he was an atheist until he found Jesus. Most might say “Narnia” or “Screwtape”. All of them would be correct however none of them would touch upon his thoughts, times, works, loves and life. Colin Duriez has put together as much of the man as possible in alphabetical order so that everything is available for us to read and consider. This is an admirable job and very well done. If you are interested in the life of a man from A-Z then this is the book for you.

  • There are two items that comes to mind as you go through Colin Duriez’s book: the first will be the incredible legacy C.S. Lewis has left us in his writings, the second being the extensive knowledge of Duriez’s of an author he obviously greatly admires!

Most of us are familiar with C.S. Lewis to an extent with popular novels such as ‘The Chronicles Of Narnia’ for one but Duriez’s book clearly shows what a prolific author he was.

The A-Z of C. S. Lewis is a remarkable catalog of Lewis’ work, providing a cross reference on just about any character and place he ever created.

Duriez’s compilation also highlights the motivations behind C.S. Lewis’ works, his original thoughts and intentions in writing them. Page after page will offer fascinating insight on a Christian described as an intellectual giant of the 20th Century literary world.

  • This is a fascinating book, it is not a story but a book that covers many different topics and subjects from A-Z. I have not read any C.S. Lewis books but found this book very interesting and has made me want to read his work. This book can be used for many differnent things: research, educating, pick up and just read a topic, read from cover to cover, knowledge, and anything you want it to be.

I really liked the format and the fact that this book covers so many different subjects about C.S. Lewis. I would recommend this to all ages and anyone that wants to be educated and entertained at the same time.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through Litfuse. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my

  • All Meant To Shine says:

I knew very little about C.S. Lewis before reading this book. I learned so much about a brilliant man. This book was a little more historical than I thought it would be, but I definitely enjoyed reading it. It would have been much more enjoyable had I read the works by Lewis being described. I have now wanted to start reading more of his works and this book will serve as a great reference back once I have read them. If you are a C.S. Lewis fan I highly recommend this book and if you, like I did, know very little about him I still recommend this book as it might spark a fire for you to read more works by him.

  • Whether you are looking for specific information on the writings of Lewis, information on his closest earthly relationships, or merely browsing through this alphabetic text, you will find many entries of interest with cross references to lead you, as Aslan said, “higher up and deeper in” to the world of C.S. Lewis. I recommend this book to lovers of C.S. Lewis and those who desire to get to known and understand his varied and treasured contributions to 20th century literature.

  • Happy Four says:

I have been a fan of C.S. Lewis since a small child. This resource is priceless and an excellent tool for any avid reader who desires to delve deeper in to the person, works and characters of C.S. Lewis. As one who has not read all of his works this book is a true treasure. You can read it through directly or look up specific words. You may enjoy reading through and then following the asterisks which allow us to get a deeper understanding of that specific word by connecting to another.

  • I really enjoyed this book and I know that it will be a book we peruse often as I have boys who love to read and love C.S. Lewis. I look forward to them using this resource to take their understanding of characters and ideas to a deeper level in the future! I enjoyed it and I know it will be a library favorite at our home!!

  • This is a very comprehensive book covering all areas of the life of C.S. Lewis. As a reader I am only familiar with his seven books about or connected to Narnia. I had no idea that he had such a large body of work outside of those books for children. This book is set up alphabetically, so you can read it from beginning to end or easily go directly to the topic you wish to learn more about. It was interesting to see how many people touched his life and his belief system. I could tell that a lot of research went into the making and writing of this book. This would be especially helpful to those wishing to do further research or write school reports about the author and his life. I have to admit, I was expecting a book that elaborated or gave even more detail and depth to the world of Narnia, since that is where I first came in contact with Lewis and his writing, but this created a much more well rounded and fleshed out study of the man behind that magical kingdom.

  • It is definitely not a book you’re going to sit and read through, but if you are a big C.S. Lewis fan, it is a book you will enjoy, and is more of a resource, than a book to read for enjoyment. It would be nice to keep at hand when reading The Chronicles of Narnia, or any of his other works.

  • C. S. Lewis’ writings have fascinated me since I discovered the Chronicles of Narnia in 4th or 5th grade. I have not as of yet read all his works, but one day I will be able to say that I have.

In the meantime, The A-Z of C.S. Lewis has gifted me with the ability to explore his life, his works, his friendships, his theology, and more. This encyclopedic work can be read straight through from cover to cover, or you can pick a topic and follow the threads to find related information.

However you choose to read the book, you will find it is an outstanding resource for all things C.S. Lewis.

  • I wanted to read the book because I love Chronicles of Narnia. I read the entire series over a few days. My mother is also a fan of C.S. Lewis’s non-fiction books. She has a whole collection of the non-fiction, plus Narnia and the ScrewTape letters. Some of her books includes Mere Christianity, Words to Live by, A Joyful Christian and a Case for Christianity. She is awaiting me to give her this book because of her collection.

  • Wonderful book that is an encyclopedia of all things Lewis, this is a book which will pick often and savour all the tidbits of information it contains. This is a book for everyone familiar with Lewis’ life and writings. It contains many references to his writing, both fictional and deeply theological. Those who are already with Lewis will love it, and it is an introduction newly come to the work of this great author. Highly recommended for all.

  • Blogger Review~ I have always had a love for reading every since I was a child, I’d to love read all kinds of books and enjoyed being read to. I can remember reading the Narnia books as a young girl and was so excited when the movies came out. Getting a in-depth look into the life of CS Lewis though Colin Duriez writings, it’s no wonder CS.Lewis is a very beloved author!

  • First of all, WOW! The author truly outdid himself. This is a very thorough, authoritative writing on the life of C.S. Lewis and his beloved writings. If you want to learn more about the man, the myth, the legend than this book is truly one for all that and more.

  • Clive Staples Lewis, popular British author, literary critic, philosopher and theologian, left his mark on civilization through the friendships he cultivated, the students he mentored, and the many books that flowed from his prolific pen. This Lewis encyclopedia will take the reader from zero to expert in one fascinating read as it alphabetically roams the lush landscape of the life of Lewis.

    C. S. Lewis created whole realms from the depths of his encyclopedic mind, so it is only fitting that we have available this valuable resource that methodically opens up both the real world of his life and the varied worlds of his imagination.

A beautifully bound hardback, C.S. Lewis devotees will find themselves devoring every page.

  • My family loves the works of C. S. Lewis and I really enjoyed learning more about him and his life in this book. My kids absolutely love the Chronicles of Narnia as this is the second time we’ve read the series to them. Lewis definitely should be known for more than Narnia though as he really did write so much more and did live a long life. I think Duriez did a wonderful job of telling us about Lewis in this book. Definitely a great read and a wonderful book to use for school when my children are a bit older.

  • While The A-Z of C.S. Lewis appears to be a standard reference book, I found it oddly addicting as I perused its pages. Many listings have cross references, and as I would enjoy one entry, the cross reference would lead me to examine another. That listing would be linked to yet another item, leading me on into Lewis’ world. Many readers may not read it comprehensively from first page to last, but over time it would be easy to cover much of the content through the cross references alone. It can be used as a research tool for specific topics in Lewis’ life, but reading it for pure pleasure is also a likely choice. The A-Z of C.S. Lewis is excellent for the novice and will be a delight for seasoned fans. Duriez’s work is not only a labor of love, but a resource for the world as well.

  • C.S. Lewis is one of those rare authors who is able to spur the imaginations of children with his Chronicles of Narnia series, and continues feeding their minds and souls into adulthood with his diverse works. This book covers all historical aspects of his books and writings as well as his life and thoughts. The encyclopedia format is a perfect reference companion for the avid C.S. Lewis reader and it is an excellent read from cover to cover. This book is perfect for both the person who has read the entire collection of C.S. Lewis as well as the person who has just been introduced to his works.

  • This book is an encyclopedic resource of all things Lewis.
Ever wonder what the name of that evil king was? or what exactly Turkish delight is?
Colin Duriez has compiled the fictional, nonfiction, and real life CS Lewis factoids into one compendium. This is a deeper and larger book than Louis Markos’ A to Z CSLewis, with more information and references.
We have been going through Prof. Markos’ course on CS Lewis, and this book has been an excellent resource for the course.

  • Mostly, I can recommend this book. It has an incredible amount of information about C.S. Lewis, and it does assume that you are basically familiar with him and his writings. The book is not to be read as a biography or pleasure reading. This is an expanded dictionary, and it is a reference book. You can basically find any information you need about this Christian author, and I discovered much new information. I now long to read some of C.S. Lewis’s writings with which I am not familiar.

  • I was so excited to read this book since I’ve always been a fan if C.S. Lewis. I really enjoyed reading this book, although, it didn’t come off feeling like a pleasure read. More of an informative read, like an encyclopedia about a person. Not quite a biography though. I would say it is more of a reference book that is pleasurable to read. One thing is for sure though, I was already a fan of the late C.S.Lewis, and I have read a few of his books, including the series The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. But after reading this book, it gets me excited to read more of his books yet again.

    I would recommend this book

  • I have always enjoyed reading the writings of C.S. Lewis and so I was thrilled to receive The A-Z of C.S. Lewis: A Complete Guide to His Life, Thoughts and Writings, for review from Litfuse Publishing.
This is a wonderful collection of his life and writings, all in one book. It’s an encyclopedia; all is in order of course. So it is all easily accessible and provides great details in regards to his writings, characters, etc. (think of Chronicles of Narnia characters perhaps).
I do not see this as something anyone could just sit down and read but it is a wealth of information for anyone looking for a better understanding of C.S Lewis, his life and writings. I can certainly enjoy (like a devotional in some ways) flipping through the pages and reading little tidbits here and there.

  • I was definitely intrigued to read this book by Colin Duriez – “The A-Z of C.S. Lewis”. It labels itself as “an encyclopedia of his life, thought and writings”. Duriez points out right away that most people know of Lewis in just one range of his writings; either his science fiction genre, or children’s stories, or the theological genre. The purpose of this book is to discover C.S. Lewis as a whole person.

This encyclopedia is incredibly thorough. I cannot imagine the painstaking process that Duriez went through to complete this.

  • Lewis is famous for his children’s series The Chronicles of Narnia, but only a brief glance through this encyclopedic book will confirm that there is so much more to learn about this man, his family, his career, and his other writings. Anyone with a penchant for facts AND love for Lewis would devour this book.

This book is a veritable encyclopedia. Literally arranged from A-Z this book covers facts and information about every aspect of Lewis’ life – everything from his family, to his career, to his books, to the specific characters from his books, to his views on different topics, to people who were an influence on his life and theology – everything you could possibly wish to know, fact wise, about CS Lewis is included in this book.

  • This is an amazing reference book for C.S. Lewis fans as well as scholars. A true must have text…

  • When I was in my early teens, I loved reading C.S. Lewis, but often I got lost in the midst of all the characters and the lands and quite frankly got myself lost into his books in a bad way. This book would have helped kept things straight for me, and aided me in understanding his books better. I find that this book is an excellent addition in my library for my kids and I will find this a go to book when we ever need a quick refresh on who a character is or help remembering anything! I can see this book a perfect aide in book reports too.

  • When I requested this book I was thinking it was more of a biographical look at his life but instead it is a encyclopedia of anything and everything related to C.S. Lewis. It’s not exactly something you go and read through from cover to cover, but it is a great resource to learn more about Lewis’ life and works. I enjoyed looking up different books and things I didn’t know about him. If you are a Lewis fan and want to be exposed to more about him and have a handy reference about his life and works this is the book for you. We are excited to have added it to our shelf.
