Total Christmas Makeover: 31 Devotions to Celebrate with Purpose (Abingdon Press, October 2017)

Give your Christmas a makeover with this practical approach to help your family learn what it means to truly celebrate their Savior.

In the bustle of the Christmas season, it can be easy to get swept up in all of the things to do. But it’s important to pause and remember that our priority should be to spend time celebrating Christ’s birth and not forget to invite Jesus to his own party.

Christmas is far more than a celebration of an event from long ago or a modern holiday centered around shopping. Mindfully take time to listen to how God continues to speak through the Christmas story as the Gospel narratives centered around the birth of Jesus provide encouragement and revelation concerning the love of God and his wisdom for us today.

In Total Christmas Makeover, author and Bible teacher Melissa Spoelstra provides a practical approach for you and your family to turn your attention toward God’s grace day-by-day as you prepare for Christmas. This 31-day devotional presents key scriptures, ideas to implement with each reading, and questions for reflection to guide you in rediscovering rituals, relationship, and rest to connect you more deeply with Christ this holiday season.

  • Do you want to truly celebrate Christmas with your Savoir? This is your book.
This would be a great book for a small group, it has Questions for reflection at the end of the 31 devotions. Or it could just be part of your Bible reading each day with something to help keep your mind on the reason for the season. Jesus.
I think this would make a great gift.

  • This book is a devotional for 31 days of the holiday season. It brings back those forgotten traditions that once brought happiness and peacefulness. It gives suggestions on how to make over your traditional hectic Christmas season to make it more enjoyable and rewarding. You may even find time to take a moment for yourself. Wouldn’t that be refreshing? The book has three sections, the common three elements of celebrating the bible. Those three elements being, ritual, relationship and rest. We have often forgotten how the Lord speaks to us and how we don’t sometimes listen, especially during the blessed holiday season. Learn to bring the LOVE back to the season!

  • A wonderful devotional book that I came to enjoy. Even though it’s Christmas this can also be used for Thanksgiving as well I believe it will help us get started for the Christmas season and have Thanksgiving in our hearts.

  • “Total Christmas Makeover” by author Melissa Spoelstra is just what the title says a new way to enjoy and not get away from the true meaning of Christmas. It tells you different ways to bring yourself back to  the Christmas season with your family and friends. There are prayers for everyday life and occurrences. The book brings you back to your family traditions and beliefs.

  • Does your family have meaningful Christmas rituals? This 31 day devotional is specifically designed to help readers intentionally connect more deeply with Christ during the holiday season. The author shares questions for reflection as well as practical suggestions.

  • This is a small book that would make a great daily December devotional for Christmas. 31 days total this book give you a short devotional but with questions at the end, so you do need to put some effort into it-which isn’t bad! You could read this every year or if you just need a new Christmas devotional or gift idea this would be a good one.

  • The author created a perfect new way to spend even more time teaching your family about God as well as giving him more time in all of your lives. She takes the fun out of Christmas and adds the faith in this very well written and easy to follow book. It will be a great gift for anyone who prefers to follow a more religious path during the Christmas holiday.

Total Christmas Makeover: 31 Devotions to Celebrate with Purpose by Melissa Spoelstra is lovely new book for the Advent season. It is a beautiful little book and I am looking forward to spending the Advent season fully immersed in it.

  • Best Reads says:

An awesome little book that is both user friendly and thought-provoking and quite possibly life-changing for those feeling overwhelmed by all the bustle of the season. I love how she approaches the biblical example of celebration which involves Ritual, Relationship and Rest. That last one is probably the trickiest to embrace during the holiday season! This devotional is the perfect guide to help readers bring a new, refreshing perspective to their celebrations.

  • TOTAL CHRISTMAS MAKEOVER is a devotional to start around Thanksgiving. It includes some verses, thoughts about the verses — which is set around a theme, such as light to the world, worship, traditions, etc — a prayer, and three or four questions for reflection. You will need a notebook for writing your answers if you don’t like to mark up books. There is also an application.

The way it is designed makes me think it is designed for a women’s small group or once a week Bible study, where you would read and discuss as a group. It is ideal for that. It can also be done alone, but I think it’d be more fun as a group, where maybe you could even plan to do some of the applications as a group.

This is a more indepth devotional that will take more than a minute or two of your time. You …

  • A perfect holiday devo that will keep us connected to Him and in the holiday spirit.

  • I highly recommend to everyone to read this book

  • Just in time for the holidays. A great devotional for the busy mom who wants to have a more meaning Christmas for her family.

  • Total Christmas Makeover is going to be a focus for me this Christmas. I didn’t need to go much further than the introduction to know I needed to continue reading. I love the easy to read format as it is totally doable and engaging. The book is split into three categories: ritual, relationships, and rest. Each topic has ten days of devotionals to explore and take you deeper. As my heart’s desire is to know God’s Word more so that I can know His character and His promises, I love the idea of diving into festivities in the Bible and to understanding them better as we approach the greatest celebration of all. I really couldn’t put the book down. Read more on Inspiration Clothesline!

  • Rather than focusing on what we didn’t do or what we’re missing, we instead focus on being, being more intentional about what we are doing and focus on being more intentional with our time, family, friends and attitude. I love thinking about how I’m going to do Christmas differently this year and I how I am going to change my celebrations to a more slower pace. I love the idea of pausing and I love the reflection in each of the days.

  • This is a wonderful little devotional that will help add intentional meaning to the holiday season. I look forward to pulling it out again in December!

  • Moments says:

I love this layout to the book and that there is such a big piece focused on really applying this and using this in each of our lives, it makes it so much more personal and easy to implement than just having a reading to complete on the topic.  I am looking forward to really taking my time and working through this book in the month of November as it will help me to be in the right mindset and focus by the time December arrives.

  • “Total Christmas Makeover” is a great devotional that is perfect to use throughout December. It has 31 days of devotionals and questions that are perfect for your quiet time! You could use this devotional every year if you want. It makes a great gift for the holiday season. There are prayers for everyday life. It brings you back to your family traditions and beliefs!

  • Melissa Spoelstra’s Total Christmas Makeover: 31 Devotions to Celebrate with Purpose provides families with practical approaches for keeping our attention on what God is doing in Christ, not on what we’re doing to celebrate. With all the hustle and bustle that comes with the modern practices of Christmas, that makes Spoelstra’s a beautiful gift to the Church.

  • I really enjoyed this devotional a lot. I loved the stories she shares and how encouraging it is to know that everything doesn’t have to be perfect. I think about the Norman Rockwell paintings. I will never have the perfect table setting, or the perfect family Christmas photo, but I do have a family that comes together each year to make memories

  • Total Christmas Makeover is one of my favorite devotionals because it makes you think. You don’t just read a devotion and move along. The questions and ideas make you stop and reflect on your life during the holiday season, and even throughout the rest of the year. This book is great to read on your own, or share with a Small Group as discussion.

  • The Christmas season can leave you feeling rushed and frazzled. While a lot of the things we fill our season with are important, we can easily become distracted and lose the focus of why we celebrate the season. The author has written a devotional that will redirect the reader in the direction of celebrating Christ during the holiday season. The book is divided up into three sections – Ritual, Relationships, and Rest. Each devotional consists of the author’s thoughts on the topic of the day. At the end are question for reflection and an idea on how to put the thoughts into a practical application. Each day is short enough to allow for some quick reading. But the questions and application part make for a meaningful, thought provoking devotional. I really enjoyed the practical application.

  • Buzz4Mommies says:

It is way too easy to get caught up in it all and that is why this devotional is so needed! In Total Christmas Makeover, Melissa Spoelstra takes you on a 31 day journey to ready your heart for Christmas. To focus on our Savior and the ultimate gift He has given us. This little book has been such a blessing to me. I will be rereading it as we get closer to Christmas to remind myself what i need to focus on.

  • This is great study or book to work through right before (or during) the holiday season. I liked the “practical approach” and “reflection questions” the best. I don’t know necessarily if I would do this during the holiday season, I don’t feel as if I would be able to devote a lot of time to it.

  • All in all, Total Christmas Makeover is a great devotional for the upcoming holiday season. It is short and sweet, but thoughtful and practical. Best of all, it is Christ-centered. I hope you will find a copy to read with me this Christmas season!

  • Melissa Spoelestra is one of my favorite women’s Bible teachers because she has a gift for sharing spiritual concepts in a way that is easy for us to relate to, embrace, and apply to our lives.

In Total Christmas Makeover, Melissa shares 31 devotions that help us celebrate Christ throughout the season!

  • I am not a huge fan of daily devotionals. I’d rather read the Bible directly or read on a topic that is currently interesting to me. Being a fan of the author writing the complimentary copy of the book below, I chose to read it anyway. I actually enjoyed and much needed the devotionals I read in this book.

  • Spolestra introduces the book by explaining that it is organized into three sections titled, Ritual, Relationship and Rest. There are a total of 30 devotions to read through, making this the perfect supplement to regular Scripture reading in preparation for celebrating Christmas. I appreciate that each devotion is full of Scripture not only in the intro but in the content itself. Melissa ends each devotion with Questions for Reflection and practical suggestions for families with children of varying ages (personally, I’m looking forward to trying the Jesse Tree suggestion as my daughter grows older).

  • I was hoping to find some inspiration on how to make Christmas more of a blessing than a hectic time. Melissa Spoelstra offers wonderful words that do indeed inspire. Through scripture and her wise words I felt a lift in spirit as I contemplated the coming season. She adds a prayer and I really like her “A Practical Approach” segments. The “Questions for Reflection” helped me slow down and think about what I’d read. I think this book is a priceless tool for those of us who want to bring Christ to the forefront of Christmas.

  • This is a great book to help take a short break from the chaos that often surrounds Christmas and just rest for five minutes. There are 31 devotionals in three categories: Ritual, Relationships, Rest. Each devotional contains the reading, questions for reflection, and a practical approach.

I would have loved this book in the years I had more to do in the month of December, but even though I haven’t even put up a Christmas tree in four years, it reminds me of so many great memories and the memories I hope to create in the future. (We hope to move closer to family so we can spend holidays with them and no longer be alone every single holiday.)

  • When the holidays roll around it is easy to get caught up in the lights, trees, tinsel and cookies. We can forget quickly the reason we are celebrating. In this devotional we get a gentle reminder to open our hearts to the real meaning of the season.

  • SK Bell says:

I was incredibly excited to get the opportunity to read Total Christmas Makeover and was not disappointed. If you’re looking for a kind of devotional that will help you center your heart on the spiritual side of the holiday, this is a really great pick!

  • I found this devotional easy to use and could make a great family or book club selection. It would also be good for individuals. Each day begins with a Bible verse, a short script written by Melissa, and a prayer. At the end of each chapter are Questions for Reflection and A Practical Approach which includes an activity for the family on what that days devotional was about. I chose this book because of the emphasis on Christmas and because I love the cover.

  • Each year, I try to read a devotional to prepare and/or move me through the Christmas season. Matt and I typically try to read through together. This year, I was asked to read and review Total Christmas Makeover by Melissa Spoelstra and I could not be more pleased with this book! The first and main thing I enjoyed about Total Christmas Makeover is the design of and content of each of the daily devotionals. One scripture (or more) is presented at the beginning of each devotion. The devotion that follows is well-written and such a great combination of the writer’s life experiences and just great info based on the scripture(s) for that day. Each devotion also includes a great practical application for that day as well as questions to answer based on all of the above. I love this devotional.

  • It is really easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of preparing for Christmas and completely lose focus on why we actually celebrate Christmas. Total Christmas Makeover is a great way to refocus yourself and your family. This seasonal devotional is terrific. I particularly liked the questions for reflection at the end of each devotion as well as the practical approach suggestions which provide activity ideas for families.

  • By The Book says:

Total Christmas Makeover won’t have you throwing out all the things you hold dear about Christmas time, but it will show you a way to streamline, tweak, and refit your traditions and thoughts towards God. Each day begins with scripture, then progresses to the author’s thoughts. She also includes a short prayer to jump start your time with God, along with questions to get you thinking about what should be part of your Christmas activities. Practical tips conclude the short devotional. I especially liked the emphasis the author puts on remembering to honor God in all we do at Christmas, the importance of keeping our relationships strong, and finding the needed rest that God provides to his people. Because there are 31 selections, you can get started on Thanksgiving Day and finish up with the book before Christmas!

  • Really enjoyed this book! I was challenged to really focus on God and the Scriptures and add more of Him/that into Christmas! I have really taken to heart reading Scripture during the days leading up to Christmas with my family. I also love how the author reminds us to rest. Another piece that I liked about the book is how it’s designed for each day!

  • I enjoyed reading through Total Christmas Makeover. If you love Christmas like I do and would like to pick up a lite devotional to use this coming season, then I believe this book would be a nice choice. The author has written 31 daily devotions that help inspire us to remember the true reason we celebrate Christmas. She has the book broken down into three categories, Rituals, Relationships, and Rest.

  • Spoelstra’s “Total Christmas Makeover” will help you celebrate with purpose. A reminder to set aside meaningless traditions for worshipful rituals, “Total Christmas Makeover” will remind you of why you celebrate Christmas and teach your children how to intentionally pursue Christ in the holiday.

  • We’ve heard this phrase time and time again, perhaps we’ve even been know to say it ourselves or have it displayed in our home decor during the holiday season. But while it’s something we know deep down and strive to live, in the busy days leading up to Christmas we can find ourselves getting overwhelmed and lose sight of that in the midst of the holiday season.

We need to find a way to give our holidays a makeover so that truly can focus on just that. Today, I’m sharing a devotional that might just help, Total Christmas Makeover:

  • Separated into several topics such as ritual, traditions and gift giving, this 31 day devotional guides you to realistic and authentic ways to celebrate…fun and very family friendly…to create those genuine memories we all long to establish with our family. I look forward to a season of less stress and more intentions.

  • Fruitbearers says:

Let’s not get swept up in the hustle and bustle. Instead, may we prepare our hearts to celebrate this Christmas with joy and purpose…Total Christmas Makeover has 31 devotions that will help you pause and prioritize, ponder and pray.

I’ve enjoyed reading this book and will continue to read as Christmas approaches. Total Christmas Makeover is a Christ-centered, gospel-focused, grace-filled devotional that will help you and your families enjoy a meaningful celebration this Christmas.

  • More Of Him says:

This is a wonderful book for getting back to what Christmas is all about – Christ.

  • EmpowerMoms says:

The author suggests that we slow down and think about our holiday activities, rituals and plans by asking:
    “Why am I doing this?”
    “How will it honor Christ?”
“How will this activity impact my family?”

Each day includes a page or two of reading, scriptures, a prayer, questions for reflection with room to journal responses, and practical approach suggestions. This book was well written and I can’t wait to start using it daily as we approach the month of December and prepare for Christmas.

  • I’m always up for a makeover book, but this one is different. It’s a makeover of a person’s insides and views on Christmas.

The world could really use a good makeover like this. I really like the devotional format and the way it’s divided into the three Rs. The practical approach at the end of each chapter really brings it home.

Thank you, Ms Spoelstra, for opening our eyes and hearts to the real celebration of Christmas.

  • With the premise of the devotional focused around the concept of a birthday party. The author poses the situation where Christmas is Jesus’ birthday, yet many times we forget to invite Him to his own party.

Overall this was a nice devotional. If you are looking for a deep devotional where you are studying Bible verses or really getting a lot out of a daily Bible reading, this most likely isn’t for you. However, if you are looking for a devotional for the Christmas season to help you stay focused and not get lost in the holidays, you may want to check this devotional out.

  • Kcreatives says:

I think this would be a good devotional for the month of December. It helps us keep our focus on the real reason for Christmas and may give us the ability to say no to some things (by focusing on the right things).

  • I may have cried my way through the first chapter because it was such a freeing reminder. A reminder to remember. To recall and ponder and mull over what Christmas is really all about. This book of 31 short devotions starts each day off with a Scripture, and then Melissa walks through an encouraging, inspiring (and even somewhat convicting) devotional thought. She also includes a few questions for reflection.

  • Pray Species says:

Part devotional, part testimonial, and all focused on celebrating Christmas with purpose, “Total Christmas Makeover” gives Mom time to take a moment to strengthen her relationship with Jesus in what can be the busiest season of the year.

  • This is a great devotional that takes you through each day a takes a topic about the season and helps you to examine it. It also gives you ideas on different activities you can do that are about that topic. I wish I would have had this book when our children were home.

  • What a perfect book to get ones thought where they should be directed during the holiday season. This delightful book is an easy to read, enjoyable devotion that is perfect to gear up for Christ’s birth and not get so caught up in everything else that goes with the holiday season. I love the ideas for activities you can do and ways to make Christmas more meaningful, this book is one you can read over and over again.

  • Every year I tell myself I will slow down and celebrate the real reason for Christmas. I will not let another year blow in distractions and I will not let the never-ending Christmas to-do list rob me of the quiet time celebrating the birth of my Lord and Saviour.

This sweet little book contains 31 days of devotions. I love the Scripture for each day to focus my attention on God’s Word. The Author has included sweet Christmas traditions and origins of many of our loved traditions. I love that each day is a little nugget and an easy read in this busy time of year. I love this little devotional.

If you need to have a makeover of your Christmas season this…pick up a copy of this little book.

  • I loved the questions at the end of each day that really drove the points home and let me apply everything to my own life. I especially loved the practical application suggestions too – such good ideas for making our holiday season memorable and special in all the right ways. A great read for this time of year.

  • Total Christmas Makeover by Melissa Spoelstra is the perfect choice to keep us focused on the Reason for the Christmas season. With short devotions and thought-provoking questions & applications, Spoelstra reminds us to remember what God has done for us through ritual, invest in our relationships even through the busyness of the holidays, and be intentional about rest. This is a book I will re-read every Christmas to recenter myself on what matters most.

  • This book is one that families should read in November, in preparation for the holiday season. Each chapter is short enough to read together, even with little ones. With personal reflection questions, and then a page of ideas for service called A Practical Approach there is a lot to discuss. The chapters are divided into three sections – Ritual, Relationship, and Rest. I love that Total Christmas Makeover gives families a way to focus on what Christmas really means as well as ways to reach out to others during the holiday season. With the commercialization of the holiday season, it is so important for Christian families to stay centered. Let’s be leading the charge back to Christ-centered, family-centered activities and outreach.

  • A Rup Life says:

This is a well thought out book that speaks to the heart. Each day has scripture, a devotional, questions for reflection and a practical approach section. My plan is to official revisit and start this book the day after Thanksgiving so that it will lead me through the most hectic holiday times. My favorite part of this book is the practical approaches. There are many wonderful ideas that any family can incorporate.

  • This cute little devotional is an excellent reminder of what Christmas should be about. I recommend starting this little book around the day after Thanksgiving to start having a more impactful holiday season. It is a quick devotional that doesn’t take a lot of time to read each day. Which is a perk for overwhelmed people, mothers, students, or anyone these days!

  • There were many other wonderful ideas so I definitely recommend Total Christmas Makeover to help you get in the spirit of Christmas.

  • I loved this book because it was really easy to find time to read the devotional each day, and it gave me a lot of ideas for how to slow down.

  • I highly recommend this to anyone looking to dig deep into the reasons behind their traditions and business this season. It’s an easy read and worth the time to readjust your focus to the One who truly is the reason for the season.

  • I love the simplicity that Melissa offers in the pages of Total Christmas Makeover. Each day, she offers a quick devotional to ponder on. She also shares several scriptures related to that day’s devotion, as well as an action plan and questions to help you take it even further.

Slowing down during the holidays should be something we all aim for and in the pages of this book, Melissa challenges us to do just that — slow down, think about the reason for the season, and give God thanks for all that He has done for us.

  • This book is divided into three sections Ritual, Relationships and Rest. Each section gives something to think about, questions to ponder and a practical approach to change your Christmas into a more meaningful season. I liked the suggestion about taking the Christmas cards as they come in and praying for the people who sent them.
