{More about 10% Happier}

10% Happier takes readers on a ride from the outer reaches of neuroscience to the inner sanctum of network news to the bizarre fringes of America’s spiritual scene, and leaves them with a takeaway that could actually change their lives.

After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan Harris knew he had to make some changes. A lifelong nonbeliever, he found himself on a bizarre adventure, involving a disgraced pastor, a mysterious self-help guru, and a gaggle of brain scientists. Eventually, Harris realized that the source of his problems was the very thing he always thought was his greatest asset: the incessant, insatiable voice in his head, which had both propelled him through the ranks of a hyper-competitive business and also led him to make the profoundly stupid decisions that provoked his on-air freak-out.

We all have a voice in our head. It’s what has us losing our temper unnecessarily, checking our email compulsively, eating when we’re not hungry, and fixating on the past and the future at the expense of the present. Most of us would assume we’re stuck with this voice – that there’s nothing we can do to rein it in – but Harris stumbled upon an effective way to do just that. It’s a far cry from the miracle cures peddled by the self-help swamis he met; instead, it’s something he always assumed to be either impossible or useless: meditation. After learning about research that suggests meditation can do everything from lower your blood pressure to essentially rewire your brain, Harris took a deep dive into the underreported world of CEOs, scientists, and even marines who are now using it for increased calm, focus, and happiness.

  • 10% HAPPIER BOOK REVIEW

10% Happier caught my attention from page 1. Harris’ has an open and candid way of writing that makes you feel like you are talking to a close friend. He doesn’t come across preachy, pushing ways to improve your life. By sharing the details on his worse moment, you learn how he was able to step back and take the time and effort needed to fix what was broken within himself. Thanks to the writing style of Harris, you find yourself examining your own life through out the book, wondering if the tips he shares will help you quiet the voice inside your head. I enjoyed how honest Dan is with his lowest of lows and highest of highs. 10% Happier has humor and honesty that you don’t often find in a self-help novel. A great read to help you examine your life and encourage self meditation.

  • LET GO AND HAVE PEACE

Is this a devotional? Self-help? No, not really. Instead it’s more of an autobiography with a few inspirational pages at the end of it. Still, as Harris dictated his dive into all things Buddhism, it made me wonder how these let-go-and-have-peace techniques could apply to Christianity, too. Self-centeredness and ego prime the pump of worry. Could I apply these ideas in my own life (albeit somewhat less high-profile than Harris’s) and give God the glory? Yes.

  • 10% HAPPIER, BY DAN HARRIS REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY!

I have to admit, I struggled with reading this book. However, I think that Dan hits the premise on the nail head. Did enjoy reading 10% Happier. I give it 5 stars as it is well written. The struggles that Dan went through are the same kind of struggles many of us go through.

  • 10% HAPPIER BY DAN HARRIS

On the morning of June 7, 2004, Good Morning news anchor Dan Harris experienced the worst day of his life. In front of 5 million viewers, he had a full-blown panic attack.

He thought his career was over – but, in fact, that day marked a turning point in his life.

10% Happier is Dan Harris’s extremely candid, frequently irreverent memoir. In this book, Dan shares the events that led up to that moment, then takes on a fascinating spiritual journey where we get to see what religion and spirituality of all types look like from the eyes of a life-long agnostic.

In the end, he turns to meditation to calm his mind.

Dan is a top-notch writer who knows how to tell an engaging story. While this isn’t the typical book I’ve come to expect from Litfuse – I thoroughly enjoyed his book.

  • BOOK REVIEW: 10% HAPPIER BY DAN HARRIS

Harris’ shtick is that he is now 10% Happier and he’s not sure if he can actually attain 100% Happier status (Page 218). Perhaps this is where religious belief systems differ, but in general I applaud Harris for working hard to better himself and the world around him. His book 10% Happier might not appeal to practitioners of other faiths, but hopefully Harris’ book can serve as a personal memoir to tame the monsters of the mind. Harris’ end destination might differ from mine, but the fact that he is on a journey at all is what is important.

You might want to know: This book has a PG-13 flavor with drug references and foul language.

  • EVEN YOU CAN BECOME 10% HAPPIER!

This book was a tough read. It wasn’t tough because of the material or writing style but tough as it made me really think about things on a deeper level. It was very thought provoking and highly relatable at times. I found myself feeling a lot of his same initial skepticism against meditation, but when reading it made me broaden my possibilities. I wasn’t familiar at all with Buddhism, but found it very interesting. I am now beginning my own exploration of meditation daily and will try to see the positive affects it has.

  • IF YOU BELIEVE MEDITATION IS STUPID, AGAINST YOUR RELIGION OR ONLY FOR HIPPIES……….(BOOK REVIEW OF 10% HAPPIER BY DAN HARRIS)

10% Happier is more memoir than how-to with excerpts from Dan’s life that are truly hilarious if a bit disconcerting. Unfailingly interesting and thoroughly researched, this is gem of a find and I recommend it both for the storyline and the encouragement and guidance of meditation.

  • 10% HAPPIER BY DAN HARRIS

Dan Harris is a refreshingly honest and cleverly entertaining author. His story is one we can all relate to in one degree or another. We all have fears for the future, we all seek to reduce stress and we all want to be happy. Dan Harris has lead a truly exciting life and I really enjoyed reading about his many adventures. Reporting from Afghanistan, interviewing the Dalai Lama, as well as his life changing panic attack in front of the camera have all shaped him. His occasional use of “colorful language” throughout the book was a bit off setting to me, though.

  • 10% HAPPIER BY DAN HARRIS

It is essential that Mr. Harris continue his search for peace. With meditation formulating a “10% happier” return, I encourage him to pursue a different avenue to reach 70%, at the least. I recommend this book for readers who are considering making meditation part of their daily ritual.

It took me about a week to read this book and I don’t have a single doubt in my mind that I will be picking this book up again to read again. I’ve already bookmarked the back section where it gives direction in meditation. As someone who used to meditate, in my own way, years ago, I found Dan’s story to be honest, real and one that a lot of people could relate to.

  • MY REVIEW AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK

I disagree with Mr. Harris on Buddhism and meditation. I do agree with Mr. Harris that we do often get caught up in the busyness of life and that we need to take time to slow down and relax. We as Christians do need to take time to read the Bible and set aside a daily Devotional or Quiet Time to pray and meditate on what we have just read in the Bible or our Devotional.

  • 10% HAPPIER (A REVIEW)

I think Dan is a gifted writer. He’s gutsy and bold. I found it odd that for someone on TV his inner voice cusses a bit more than mine. I hope he writes again about something else (he is a master story-teller). If he ever reads this blog and comes through Pensacola I’d love to buy him a coffee and talk more about the differences between Christian meditation and Eastern mediation.

  • A CANDID READ

As someone who has enjoyed seeing Dan on television, I was excited to receive a copy of his first book. I enjoyed reading about Dan’s background and rise to national TV. I appreciate his candor about the stress he experienced and his personal journey with meditation. If each adult with stress, and who does not have stress, is honest, we do have voices in our head. It can be hard to juggle all the modern demands.

  • 10% HAPPIER BY DAN HARRIS

Harris bares all in this memoir about his career in broadcast. Those who like knowing the ins and outs of ABC News will appreciate this book. I was hoping that Harris’ exploration of meditation would not have so much about Buddhism, but it did. I think we Christians do need to exercise meditation and mindfulness but not in the Buddhist context.

  • WACKY AND WONDERFUL WORDS WEDNESDAY 10% HAPPIER BY DAN HARRIS

Being a fan of Good Morning America, I have often seen Dan Harris at the anchor chair and while he is doing is live reports so being chosen to read this book was a terrific opportunity.

While I took Journalism in high school, I often dreamed about being a reporter, however, I never realized how cut throat Journalism was until I read this book.

The author is very candid about his past and his story. I am always interested when a writer is speaking from experience.

  • BOOK REVIEW: 10% HAPPIER

I don’t really know how to review a book like this–a book that starts with bad language in the first sentence of the first page of the preface. This book is about the benefits of meditation and nudges the reader toward Buddhism, which goes against everything I believe in. That being said, here’s what I thought:

    Attractive cover.

    Great writing.

Intriguing story. (I loved the insider look at the life of a television personality.)
