{More about A Christmas Gift for Rose}

Inspired by a true story, A Christmas Gift for Rose is a heartwarming novella of sacrifice and deep love.

Born in the midst of the hardships of The Great Depression, Rose grew up in Berlin, Ohio, in the arms of a loving Amish family. But she is overwhelmed by self-doubt when she learns the truth of her birth. She was born Englisch and abandoned when her family moved West in search of work. Was she meant to be Amish or would she have been better off growing up with her own kind—Englischers? And was her intended’s gift of discovering her birth family given out of love or fear?

  • BOOK REVIEW: “A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE” BY TRICIA GOYER

Tricia Goyer has an attention to details that help draw you into the story as well, of course, as her marvelous characters. World War II and the repercussions of being in the war and being a pacifist and against it. This is the climate that Rose finds herself in when the war is over and Jonathan comes home. This is a story of the real meaning of Christmas and finding yourself and accepting others. Both Rose and Jonathan are presented in such a real manner that you feel as though they are friends of yours and when the book eventually ends you are sorry to see them go. “A Christmas Gift For Rose” is an exciting book with the romance taking top priority as each of them deals with their individual issues. Ms. Goyer has done it again. I liked this book a lot.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE BY TRICIA GOYER * WIN A KINDLE HDX FOR YOU AND A FRIEND!

I’ve read many books by Tricia Goyer and enjoyed them immensely. It was no surprise that I enjoyed A Christmas Gift for Rose. Rose’s fiance is sent off to the war and when he returns, he’s not the same man anymore. War can change a man but he still loves Rose and seems to return to his Amish roots with relative ease. Or at least that is how it appears.

Rose also comes into the knowledge that she wasn’t born Amish and when her fiance decides to find her birth parents for her for Christmas, it changes everything. Or does it? A sweet story with many elements of faith, romance and the bonds of friendship and family, A Christmas Gift for Rose is a highly recommended read. It’s also perfect for gift giving this holiday season.

It reminds me how thankful we should be that these men went and fought for freedom, giving their lives in one way or another. It was also eye-opening to see how the Amish viewed their own who went. I loved the focus on adoption and that adoptees are chosen, just like God chooses to adopt us as his children.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE BY TRICIA GOYER

This was a beautiful Christmas story of redemption and adoption and how God takes care of our needs even when we don’t understand the full story. It’s also a wonderful love story about how God wants us to follow Him and not follow rules. Of course, these things are specifically mentioned, since it’s not a preachy book! That’s just the messages I gleamed from this book.

  • A SWEET CHRISTMAS STORY

A Christmas Gift for Rose is a quick, sweet read from Tricia Goyer. Rose’s story — the secret she learns about her past and her uncertainty as she comes to grip with the truth — gives a beautiful picture of what love and family are all about.

One of the most interesting things about this story is the inspiration from which Tricia wrote it. During a trip to Amish country, she had the opportunity to meet and visit with some Amish couples. While there, she was told the story of the grandmother of one of the Amish men who was left in the care of an Amish family when her family moved away. That story grew into A Christmas Gift for Rose.

  • TRICIA’S NOVELS REFLECTS A DEEP FAITH ALONG GREAT RESEARCH!

Whilst stationed overseas Jonathan wrote to Rose: “I’ll be back in Berlin before Christmas Rose. Let’s not wait until next harvest to get married.”

Thanksgiving – Berlin, Ohio 1945: Rose has endured the murmurs behind her back from neighbours and friends, even the Bishop has visited to express his concerns about Jonathan volunteering to go overseas and serve as a Medic and perhaps already determined to leave their community.
Despite Jonathan’s assurance he has not carried a weapon and cared only for the wounded, it is quite conceivable he will no longer fit in the Amish circle and Rose will not speak to him.

  • GREAT AMISH READ!

For an Amish book this is one of my favorite. This is one of the best books that I have read by Tricia Goyer. The plot is creative and I love that it is based on a true story. Miss Rose is Amish and her love has come back from war, she is hurt that he disrespected his Amish roots and is worried they can no longer get married. Meanwhile Rose discovers a secret about her past and is unsure on how to handle her future with the new knowledge. As Rose works through her new mystery she discovers what is really important. Overall I enjoyed this book, though at times Rose was over dramatic for me. Amish readers will enjoy this cozy Christmas read!

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

In a story filled with intrigue, adventure, courage and romance, Tricia Goyer has shared a tale of hope by the merging of two families and two pasts. I sat and read this in a couple of hours, enjoying the well described history of the times, emotions the characters felt and the healing of hearts. Above all, in the story, is the theme of sacrificial love and God bringing hope through a gift the young couple doesn’t expect. I hope you enjoy novel and consider sharing it with friends and family alike.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

I really liked the storyline of this book. An Amish girl who finds out that she is “adopted”. I wish the story would have been a little longer. I felt it was kind of rushed because it is a novella. If you are looking for a quick Christmas read, then this is the book for you, because it is a very quick read. Rose had planned to marry Jonathan, but he enlisted in the Army as a Medic to serve during WWII. Rose felt her turned his back on the Amish, because they don’t believe in war. Then Rose finds out a secret about herself. Can Rose and Jonathan overcome their differences.

  • REALLY PUT ME IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!

Every time I read a book by Tricia Goyer, I’m amazed by the level of emotion her writing evokes from me. In this story I definitely felt a wide range of emotions—from frustration and sorrow to sympathy and hope. Also, I was impressed by how well she developed each character. At the end of this 192 pages, I felt as though I had truly gotten to know each of the characters. Additionally, this isn’t just a simple, sweet Christmas story. Tricia uses this story to talk about tough topics like adoption, what truly makes a family, struggles of soldiers returning home from war, and the need for solid faith in God.

  • First of all, I love Christmas books. It is my absolute most favorite time of year and reading books set during that time of year just bring me even more joy. Secondly, I love Tricia Goyer’s books. They are always so well written and enjoyable. This one was great. It is shorter than most books, which can be nice when you want a great story but don’t always have the time to sit and read forever. This story was set around WWII, which was different from what I had read in any Amish story before. There were other twists in the story that I enjoyed very much. This was a wonderful story and I highly recommend it

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE BY TRICIA GOYER BOOK REVIEW

I LOVED this book. L.o.v.e.d it. It’s a short, cozy story that had me oblivious to the world, wondering what was going to happen next to dear Miss Rose. I don’t know how much to say without spoiling it for those of you who plan on reading it in the near future, but let me just say this: this is one of the best Christmas novellas that I have ever read. I’m usually not too fond of novellas because most of the time I don’t feel like I get the whole story in such a short span of time, but I had no such trouble with A Christmas Gift For Rose. Every moment was described wonderfully, every scene was played out to perfection, and I don’t feel like I was missing some huge part of the story like I usually do when I read books this short. I can’t wait to read more from Tricia Goyer! I’ve heard great things about her, but this is the first book of hers that I personally have had the chance to read. Well, let me just say, hopefully it won’t be the last!

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

My Thoughts About the Book: As a big fan of Tricia Goyer I was delighted to get to read and review this book. The story was everything I would have expected from Goyer and more. It was a poignant story of an Amish woman and her search for God, her identity, and love. A Christmas Gift for Rose is an amazing story of love, faith and family just in time for the Christmas season. This book will definitely pull at your heartstrings. I know it did mine. A short and quick read, this is the book you will want to share with all your friends and family. Warning: Be sure to have a box of Kleenex near because you will need them before the story is over.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

I really loved this story, it is a story of love, faith, forgiveness and the ties that bind a family together are not always biological, but spiritual and emotional and that those ties run deep! That being a family and having those ties are so much more important than how that family was created, whether by birth or adoption.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

Tricia Goyer is the queen of Amish fiction and she does not disappoint with this novella for Christmas. Rose has grown up Amish but finds out that she is actually English. What will that mean for her and her betrothed who are already at odds because he decided to go and help in World War II. What will Jonathon do when he finds out she is not truly Amish? Will he still want her as his own?

This is a great feel good novella about adoption and what it means to be a family. This story is based on a true story that Tricia learned while doing research in Amish country of a little girl who was taken in during an Amish family when her family couldn’t care for her during the Great Depression. The Amish have always fascinated me and I am thankful that Tricia does her research.

If you have not yet read a book by author Tricia Goyer then I have to tell you that you are really missing out. She is one of my favorite christian fiction authors and I have yet to read a book by her that I didn’t like. This book isn’t quite as a long as her usual books but it was a super sweet read! I would say that the running theme in the story is the importance of family which shines through in the characters of A Christmas Gift for Rose. This story is faith filled and precious. You shouldn’t expect much about Christmas in the storyline. I was expecting a bit more regarding the holiday but realized once I finished the book that it’s all about Rose and the gift she receives.

  • REVIEW – A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

Honestly, I don’t like reading holiday themed books until after Thanksgiving, but I’m a fan of the author’s books, so I went ahead and read it anyway. The book is a super-fast read, just under 200 pages, with wonderful characters and an interesting plot! I thought it was odd that the book was set during WWII, as the previous book I had read was a WWII Amish romance. Overall, I enjoyed reading A Christmas Gift for Rose and I recommend it to other readers. Plus, the book would make a good Christmas present for someone.

  • It is no secret that I am a Tricia Goyer fan. I find her Amish stories intriguing and fascinating. A Christmas Gift for Rose is no different. Goyer weaves a true tapestry as Rose Yoder discovers the truth about her past, who she is and who she is to become. • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review Tricia’s newest novella. I always love reading her books! This book was no exception. Rose was firm and happy in her life as a young Amish woman – until the man she planned to marry went off to serve in the war. Being Amish, that was a forbidden thing and she wasn’t sure she could forgive him or that he would ever be accepted back into their community.

Then Rose finds out that she was adopted by her family and begins to doubt her future in her family and Amish life, as well. This is a great story about love, forgiveness, and finding your place in the Lord. I really enjoyed it and was a great Christmas read!!

This is a heartwarming novel just in time for Christmas! The character were excellent and the plot developed quickly, drawing me right into the story.

One of my favorite parts of the story was when Rose read Heidi to her students, and it touched her, and showed how a good book can bring light to a difficult time.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

I love Christmas novellas and books by Tricia Goyer so when you combine the two, it’s a win-win! Goyer’s Amish stories always have a unique twist to them and this one is no exception. In spite of this being a novella, Goyer succeeds in crafting a story with several layers. This is a heartwarming story to add to your Christmas collection.

  • TRULY A GIFT!

At only 178 pages, A Christmas Gift for Rose was a quick and easy read. However, these seemingly few pages hold a powerful and endearing story. Tricia Goyer packs a lot of truth into her story and emotion and tension that is palpable at times. She is an amazing wordsmith! Goyer captures Rose’s emotion and transformation and the family life of the Amish in living color. Goyer is also on point in giving a picture of the family dynamics in this story. Her description and detail offers depth to Rose’s and Jonathan’s relationship. I appreciated being able to get the story from both of their perspectives rather than the one dimensional narrative way. I almost never provide quotes from a book of fiction that I read, but I thought these from A Christmas Gift for Rose were profound enough to share and they will give you a taste of the deep truths found in this relatively short story:
“Rose couldn’t remember everything she’d written, but it was clear that her fears had shouted louder than hope’s whispers.” (pg. 107)
“You see, Dat thought your family needed a garden for food…and they did. But flowers feed our soul in a different way. They remind us of a God who creates beautiful things and takes notice of the tiniest detail.” (pg. 133)
“It seems to me, Rose, the kind of ancestors you have is not as important as the ones your children have.” (pg. 139)

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE BY TRICIA GOYER BOOK REVIEW & BLOG TOUR + WIN A KINDLE HDX FOR YOU AND A FRIEND!!

This was the first Amish fiction novel I have read that wasn’t set in the present day and I thought one of the coolest things about this story was- it didn’t matter. It read the same. The Amish are the same now as they were then. While this was not a surprise, I still found it refreshing that a group of people could remain largely unchanged generations later. As usual, we could certainly learn a thing or two from the Amish. A Christmas Gift for Rose was an interesting story altogether. Through a confession or her mother’s Rose learns that she is actually adopted and not Amish by birth which causes her some huge struggles. Is she even truly Amish since she wasn’t born that way?

  • NOVELLA LENGTH…. NOVEL QUALITY!

This is a beautiful story of a girl finding her family and her self. Rose discovers quite abruptly that she was not “born” Amish but was adopted into it. As she tries to determine where she fits in and will call home, she gets more than she could have ever hoped for.

  • OUTSTANDING!

Have you ever discovered something about yourself or a family member that you had a hard time embracing? The main character of this amazing book believes she was born Amish only to discover that she was adopted. The information and situations Rose experiences are not expected or desired. This is another wonderful book by Tricia that I would highly recommend. This is a beautiful story of love and hope and opened my eyes to the reminder to put myself in the shoes of others in lieu of judging their life and journey.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

I think I enjoyed this little short story, as much as any of Tricia’s other novels. Set in the 40′s we are shown how WWII affected the Amish and the English alike. Rose’s story was heartbreaking, but you could easily relate to it. I have to say I was surprised at the ending, because until the very end I had someone different picked to be Rose’s English family. So that was fun, a great surprise. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone as a great story for Christmas (or anytime of the year.) A 5 star story, with a great ending!

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

This little novel packed a very big punch! It is the sort of story that makes you want to read more about the time period and made me very sad that it had to end. If only there was a way to ask Goyer to write a sequel to their story! The setting was one I had never considered before through the Amish’s eyes, and as it turns out, I loved it.

Between the time setting of WWII, the mystery of Rose’s past, and the uncertainty of her future with Jonathan, this was a spectacular novel that is not to be missed! As the mystery of her life unravels, Rose discovers more about who she is and how the family she has is really the most important thing in her life. The best part was that Rose’s story was based on a true story – and that just made this a spectacular read.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE BY TRICIA GOYER

I really loved the story and when I realized that it was actually based on a true story well, it made it even more special.Overall there were emotional ups and downs within the pages of this one, and the author does an amazing job of allowing the reader to feel those emotions.Far from predictable I wasn’t sure how this story would wind up, and couldn’t read fast enough to find out!

  • BOOK REVIEW-A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

Tricia Goyer does an amazing job of pulling you into the story right from the beginning, and holding your attention throughout. The character of Rose was so complex, with many things going on. I really felt her struggle with her feelings, not knowing where she belonged. She had to learn to accept that God had put her where she was meant to be.

  • A GIFT FOR ME

The ending really choked me up. I’m having a hard time finding the things that sum up how I feel about this book.
This is one of those books that you should read when you’re feeling low and need a spiritual re-charge. I couldn’t help feeling the highs and lows while reading. I became so emotionally connected to Rose and her story. I was also adopted, though only by my father, and did not know about it or him until I was older. I was even older that that when I finally met my real father, only to have him taken to heaven a year later. The same questions about the unknown that were raised within Rose were raised in me as well. Feeling like she wouldn’t get the chance to know her parents, her birth parents, I can relate.
Christmas in the title is slightly misleading to me. You think of the gushy holiday things that go along with the word. For me, Christmas was Rose’s gift, and our gift is reading her story.

  • A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE

This was a short, yet sweet Christmas novella set in an Amish town and based on a true story, that is sure to be a delightful read accompanied by a warm fireside and a cup of cocoa, to read during the holiday season!

This was the first book that I’ve read by Tricia that she had written by herself (I read The Swiss Courier, which she authored with another author, Mike Yorkey), and I have to say I really liked it! It was a very sweet quaint story that really made me get excited about the upcoming holiday season!

Since this is a novella, it’s shorter than a novel and the perfect size to read in a short amount of time. However don’t let the size fool you as there is plenty of things going on. At first I though that since this story was so short, I wouldn’t get a very good character development in the story. But I was pleasantly surprised when I read it, to find that this wasn’t an issue at all, and actually the character development was quite well done.

  • LITFUSE TOUR: A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR ROSE BY TRICIA GOYER #GROW4CHRIST

A little bit of Christmas in September. even though I’m posting this in October, what a wonderful bit of the season early on. I was immediately pulled into the story of Rose as she struggles to loosen the bonds of the the Amish world and welcome her beau back into her life. Rose has grown up with the understanding that anything outside of the Amish faith is forbidden and maybe even evil and so when confronted with one of their own who serves during WWII and him coming back to re-join the Amish flock, the whole community, especially Rose is tormented with how to handle such a thing.

  • DOUBLE KINDLE HDX CHRISTMAS GIFT PACK FROM @TRICIAGOYER!

I am already a huge fan of Tricia Goyer and Amish fiction so I couldn’t wait to dig into “A Christmas Gift for Rose” Tricia Goyer has an amazing way of making you care so much for her characters. Throughout this book I felt as though Rose were a dear and close friend. This makes you so invested in the people and stories they are sharing. The author paints a beautiful story with ups and downs that seem real and inspiring at the same time.
As someone who has a personal experience with adoption this part of the story really touched me. There are always feelings of wondering where you belong. At the same time this book showed how big the blessings of adoption are for everyone involved, not just the adopted child.

  • A CHRISTMAS FOR ROSE BY TRICIA GOYER

I have to say I truly adore Amish fiction and a Christmas Gift for Rose did not disappoint me. I could plainly feel the war going on in Rose’s heart and mind. She was Amish but, yet, she wasn’t. It was an emotional tug of war but I loved the fact that she didn’t have to face it alone. Her entire family stood by her and Jonathan’s support was heartwarming. Even though Jonathan was dealing with his own deamons he fought for Rose and gave her the greatest gift she could have ever hoped for. The characters were absolutely loveable and the storyline was definitely different than any I have read before. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into their lives, sharing the hurt and the happiness. Tricia Goyer is a new author to me and one I will be adding to my “Favorite’s” list.

  • IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SHORT AND SWEET BOOK TO PUT YOU IN THE HOLIDAY MOOD, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU WANT TO READ!

I have always loved Amish fiction, and this book was no exception!!

This is a very short book in length, but the story has more emotional punch than many much longer books. The book touches on issues of adoption, love, loss, religious identity and more, while still being a simple sweet romance story.

If you are looking for a short and sweet book to put you in the holiday mood, this is the book you want to read!
