Forgive like Christ forgave us

Anita Higman takes readers to a quaint Texan town with a tale of forgiveness, hope and love.

11/5/13 | Seattle: Can you pinpoint one decision, one moment, one action that changed your life forever? We all have definable moments that shape who we are and the path we follow, but sometimes other people make that decision for us. In A Marriage in Middlebury (Abingdon Press/November 5, 2013/ISBN: 978-1-4267-3387-1/$14.99), Anita Higman weaves a heartwarming tale of how one choice takes a woman down an unexpected path to forgiveness.

At a young age, Charlotte Rose Hill thought she found the man she would marry: Sam Wilder. But when Sam proposed, Charlotte rejected his offer. Despite her love for Sam, she bowed to the pressures from Sam’s family to break off their relationship. Sam and Charlotte went their separate ways, neither understanding the real reasons why.

More than a decade later, Charlotte is comfortable with her life; she owns her own tea shop, serving up the country delicacies, uniquely blended teas and matchmaking advice for her dedicated customers. The only thing lacking is someone to share it with. So when Sam Wilder walks into her tearoom one day, Charlotte is stunned and speechless. Even though it seems too good to be true, Charlotte begins to hope for the future they could have had together. However, those hopes quickly vanish when she learns Sam didn’t come alone.

Sam’s arrival, despite having a fiancée draped on his arm, stirs up old feelings for Charlotte, and she can’t help but remember the past. Torn between her heart and her mind, Charlotte struggles to squelch her dreams of a life with Sam and instead be a supportive friend. When the truth comes out about why they had to break off their relationship, will they be able to forgive and forget? Will it push them farther apart or closer together?

Returning to a favorite theme of forgiveness and reconciliation, Higman develops a beautiful story that illustrates how we should handle situations when life doesn’t go as expected. “Forgiveness is not easy, but it’s the only way to live free,” Higman explains. “It helps to remember that forgiveness is what God offered us when we sinned against Him.”

Centered around Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight,” A Marriage in Middlebury shares the importance of trusting God during life’s storms.

Praise for A Marriage in Middlebury

“Nothing makes for a better romance novel than second chances, misunderstandings, and tension-filled bad timing, and that’s exactly what tearoom owner Charlotte Rose Hill experiences in Anita Higman’s lovely new novel, A Marriage in Middlebury. When Charlotte’s old beau returns to the quaint town, fiancée in tow, you’d think the old sparks would be snuffed out. Think again. Higman has created an ensemble of characters both romantic and quirky, and the greatest pleasure in reading the book is that all of their stories matter.” ~ Trish Perry, author of The Perfect Blend and Tea for Two

“An exquisite love story! A Marriage in Middlebury offers readers the perfect blend of sweet and savory with a variety of humorous twists and intriguing turns throughout. “Anita Higman is an up-and-comer in Christian fiction. Her storytelling has an appealing light touch that blends beautifully with interesting and quirky backgrounds and all the drama good romance should have. Bricker, award-winning and best-selling author of Laugh-Out-Loud fiction, including the Another Emma Rae Creation series

  • WILL REAL LOVE PREVAIL?

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY BY ANITA HIGMAN (BOOK REVIEW)

This was one of those novels that grabbed my attention from the very beginning. Charlotte owns a tea room in the little town in which she grew up- how sweet is that? Right away, I cared about these characters. The whole story of why Charlotte turned down Sam’s marriage proposal in their younger days isn’t clear, but what is clear is that she did it to protect other people, despite how unhappy she was to do it. Bits and pieces of Sam and Charlotte’s story unfold throughout the story, and they just make your heart break for her for what she has gone through.

  • Judging by the title, I had almost expected a Jane Austen-like novel. Then I discovered that this novel actually takes place in present day Texas. It still has a nice romantic story of star-crossed lovers who eventually wind up together. I enjoyed this book as an easy read with a happy ending. As a tea drinker, I’d like to visit Rose Hill Cottage tearoom myself. Anita Higman made it seem like a real place that I could imagine quite clearly.

  • GREAT BOOK

I liked this book but I figured out how it was going to end about halfway through and it was kind of predictable most of the time. Even though I figured out what was going to happen I still really enjoyed the author’s writing and the characters in this book.

  • “A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY” BY ANITA HIGMAN

This is, by far, the best Higman book yet! Charlotte’s tea room is quirky and fun. Her independent spirit, willingness to help others, and tendency to run for the broom/prayer closet at the first sign of trouble is endearing. She’s the kind of person I’d love to have for a friend.

A Marriage in Niddlebury strikes the perfect balance of crazy fun and depth of emotion and faith. As a reader, you’ll laugh along with the quirks while wanting to take notes about what Charlotte and Sam are learning.

Any book that makes me want to run out and meet the characters is a winner in my book.

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY

The book information starts out with the line “One decision changed both their lives…” Often I wonder in life how many times this happens, Anita Higman showed in this story, how that happened and played out. I have to say I truly enjoyed this book! It started a bit slow, but nothing draggy, I had no trouble reading the book. I love a story with a happy ending. And while there were points in the story, I was afraid it would not end (like I wanted it to) it all came together at the end. I have enjoyed Anita’s books, and highly look forward to more from her. Definitely a great story.
    4 stars.

I love the little cafe pictured on the bottom of this book. It is so cute and I can just picture being here, sipping on some delicious tea.

Charlotte was someone that was easy to relate to. I liked her personality and absolutely hated the way the book opened up and Sam’s fiancée was introduced. I liked her okay, but it wasn’t who I wanted Sam to be with. I really wanted Sam and Charlotte to have a second chance at love.

  • FABULOUS SMALL TOWN CHARM

This is another fun, sappy, Christian romance novel. However, as much as I thought I would be bored with it since I’ve been reading a lot of this genre lately, I was pulled in and wanted to see what would happen. I loved the small town southern charm of this book and you instantly fell in love with all the characters and wanted to find out what was going to happen to them. A Marriage in Middlebury introduces us to the fictional Gulf Coast town of Middlebury, Texas and draws us into the lives of Charlotte and several inhabitants who frequent the Rose Hill Cottage Tearoom. I really enjoyed this book! So many secrets and deceit that turned so many lives upside down. This is real life in this story! Things do not always turn out the way we wish.

The author created some very unique characters for this story, several weak individuals, even some down right arrogant and then there were the one’s that wanted to take the whole town onto their shoulders. This author has a real talent is evident in this book.

Marriage in Middlebury is an enjoyable read, filled with home-town spirit and lots of colorful characters. The tid-bits of tea facts woven into the story was rather fun, as the main character would analyze a person and then pick a tea that would best suit their character – that was fun to read.

Anita Higman has become one of my favorite authors. Her humorous, easygoing writing style just hits the spot with me. The main character, Charlotte, was a kindred spirit from page one. On the other hand, her long-lost love Sam was a doofus. I wanted to twist his arm around his back almost immediately because of some of the goofy things that went over his head!

You know, I sometimes believe we really do love the first person & never quite get over it. Especially when you are so young & had your dreams cut off the way that Charlotte did. Sam’s father does something very mean & underhanded to break them up & Charlotte does manage to go on and build a good life, she just doesn’t have anyone in her life that she loves.

Well, the day that he walks in with his fiancée, that all changes. It’s one thing to not see the person but to see them, it’s an entirely different situation. Charlotte realizes that she never let go of that dream, she just denied it.

Once Sam’s father dies, the cook, comes forward with new information about what happened when they were eighteen. At the same time, his fiancée, Audrey is taking a second look at a new stranger in town.

  • This is a classic romance novel. It is well written and enjoyable. There isn’t many twists and turns that you don’t see coming, but that’s alright for these simple reads. It is nice to sit and read a good book when you can without having to exert much brain energy. The characters are great and full of life. The setting is wonderful and would be a place I would love to live. If you are looking for an enjoyable romantic novel that you can easily pick up where you left off reading, this is a great one.

MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK: I loved this book. The story of Charlotte and Sam was heart wrenching, yet tender and sweet. The story is so very life-like that it is as if Higman knew this characters personally. God’s presence in this tale of misunderstandings, prejudice, and hate made the book so inspiring. Higman is an amazing wordsmith and I really enjoy reading her work. This was one of those books that you cannot put down until you have read the last page. If you want to read a well-written book then this is the book for you. Thanks Abingdon for allowing me to review this book.

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY BY ANITA HIGMAN, ©2013

A fun yet serious read, A Marriage in Middlebury will leave behind how becoming transparent and vulnerable will open the way to healing and love. Decisions we make to protect someone aren’t always the right ones. By them coming to the realization of their need, the Lord is able to change them and their circumstances greater than man ever could. A lot of issues are brought out in this story and they are discussed among the characters involved with truthful answers rather than being glossed over at the moment. Because of this they were able to get beyond their past to move forward. When they didn’t know what path to take, they prayed. It took coming together to realize this was what would bring their answers. An excellent book I would recommend.

This is the second novel I’ve read by Anita Higman and I think she likes stories with a twist from the past that comes to play in the present. Her books are definitely a little more unique than your average romance novel, but I got a little bogged down in the details on this one.

If you love sweet, wholesome romance and seeing how others work through the difficult storms of their lives – you will enjoy A Marriage In Middlebury.

A Marriage in Middlebury is a beautifully written story of small town, USA and Charlotte Rose Hill. While she is the center character in Middlebury, there are many other important characters whose lives intertwine with Charlotte’s. In the course of a very short time, Charlotte is confronted by her past and her first love, is offered an amazing opportunity for her business and makes a new friend or two. It’s a sweet story with some twists and turns. I really enjoyed A Marriage in Middlebury! I would definitely reccommend this book to any lover of contemporary fiction, contemporary fiction or Christian Fiction.

  • JUST BEAUTIFUL!

I absolutely loved Charlotte! Higman tells her story in such a way that it seems as if you feel what Charlotte’s feeling at each juncture in the story. Charlotte’s and Sam’s back story is woven into the plot with such fluency that does not interrupt present day happenings in the novel. While reading the book, I could almost picture myself sitting at a little table in the Rose Cottage Tearoom “people watching” this cast of characters.
I appreciated Higman sharing the “voice” of each character. While maybe a little predictable, A Marriage in Middlebury is a beautifully told story of mistakes, loss, love, second chances and faith that overcomes any circumstance.

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY BY ANITA HIGMAN

I saw glimpses of The Help, Andy Griffith Show, and Steel Magnolias in A Marriage in Middlebury. Of course, the book has a delightful flavor all it’s own. I wish the town and these people truly existed as I’d be happy to be a part of their world. I utterly and completely adored this book!

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY BY ANITA HIGMAN

Marriage in Middlebury is my second book by Anita Higman and I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. Middlebury is portrayed as a quaint little town, one that I would love to live in, and I like that. I can relate to a story more when I love the setting. Middlebury is a place for romance and it’s definitely in the air. The characters are so endearing and the story is so well written that I couldn’t help but love it. If the story wasn’t wrapped up so well I would suggest a series. It has a Debbie MaComber quality to me and, if you like wholesome small town romances, you will love this book!

Set in the small town of Middlebury, I found myself wanting to move there … or at least visit. The author made the town come alive with plenty of quirky characters and interesting moments. Small towns are just great settings for books, aren’t they?!

  • MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY BY ANITA HIGMAN

I enjoyed reading this cute Christian romance book. I liked the tea aspect since I am a hot tea drinker and lover of baked goods. I had a tea party for my 15th birthday. Charlotte and Sam were high school sweethearts. When Sam proposed Charlotte turns him down. He leaves town and she stays and creates a life for herself. Many years later he comes back with his fiancee. And the sparks fly again. This is a Christian fiction book and everything is clean and sweet. The plot and characters are well developed and interesting. Recommended.

This story was just so sweet and had enough twists and turns to keep you interested. I enjoyed reading it because it showed how we can change things in our life and how important it is to trust God to work things out. • MADE THE GRADE: A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY BY ANITA HIGMAN

“3.5 out of 5 stars — old flames find each other again, new flames meeting and trying to make everyone else as happy as they are, with unexpected twists and turns thrown in…

Charlotte and Sam are meant for each other no matter how long time has kept them apart. Reading about their pasts and the secrets that Sam’s malicious father had, I am very happy with how this novel brings these two kindred spirits together.”

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY

What I enjoyed about this book were the characters and the way there was a history involved. It’s like getting a second chance to make a different choice. I’m sure everyone has been in a situation they wish they could get a do-over for. I was excited to see where Charlotte and Sam’s relationship would go. Nothing was easy and there were many obstacles to overcome, but the dynamics throughout the storyline were great and made me want to keep reading. I couldn’t wait to find out if they would end up together or if life had just moved on too much to go back.
the relationship between Sam and his Father is not a unique relationship, but had a fresh approach to it and drew me in. I recommend this book and look forward to many other of Anita Higman’s books!

  • LITFUSE PRESENTS…..A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY…..BY ANITA HIGMAN PLUS A KINDLE FIRE FOR YOU AND A FRIEND TOO!!…AWESOME!

First of all, Charlotte was a better person than me, because I probably would have sent Audrey packing. I loved the tearoom setting giving the story a warm, homey feeling. Charlotte was a special person in the community, a person that everyone loved dearly. And I really liked Charlotte’s character. And I even liked Audrey, though she seemed to be such a needy person. As feelings started to break out as the story goes on, this book gets even more intoxicating. And I loved it even more! I couldn’t put this book down until it was finished, mainly because of Charlotte and Sam, but there were other twists and turns throughout the story that are sure to keep your attention.

  • I loved Charlotte and her cozy tea room and all of the quirky characters who visited. Some of them were very amusing, especially her friend Meredith. I loved the multiple romantic story lines and how different characters interacted with each other, from the little boy who longs for a family to Sam’s cook, who tells it like it is.

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY

This was a charming story set in a charming town full of great characters. There are actually three love stories in this book. Charlotte was going to marry Sam when they were 18, but his father didn’t want her to, so she refused him. Almost twenty years later, Sam is back with his fiancée, Audrey. There is a homeless man in town named Justin, who Sam and Audrey hire to work in the greenhouse on Sam’s later father’s estate. As Audrey spends more time with Justin, she finds she has feeling for him. When Meredith, a new friend of Charlotte’s who is in a relationship with the new pastor, send Audrey an old wedding invitation that Charlotte had made, Audrey realizes that Sam and Charlotte love each other. Will all three couples find their happy ending? I enjoyed reading about the lives

  • BOOK REVIEW: “A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY” BY ANITA HIGMAN

Small town life. This book reminded me a lot of the old television show, “The Andy Griffin Show” which was set in the small town of Mayberry. You know everyone and everyone knows you. The same is true of Middlebury. The characters that come alive on these pages make you want to live there with them. There are the past regrets that are interfering with the present and delaying moving into the future. It takes God to heal and give everyone a new start. And of course there is the romance. Charlotte Rose and Sam are really great characters that we fall in love with and feel as though they are friends that we do not want to leave when the book is finished. It would be nice to return to Middlebury with another story that continues the adventures of these special characters.

Overall, A Marriage in Middlebury, is a quick, romantic read and will appeal to those who love character driven stories. I think most fans of clean romance will find much to like in Higman’s novel. There are some strong spiritual themes in this book — forgiveness, grace and freedom through truth — that add a lot to the storyline.

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

I liked this book because it reminded me of family responsibilities. Charlotte listened to her family and it cost her the love of her life. However since her love was true her man came back into her life. It is through believing in fate and love that this couple can have a future. Will it work out? Will her family interfere again? I really liked this book. It was cool to think about all of the different teas blending together like two families do when people get married. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY {BOOK BLOG TOUR & REVIEW}

Oh my goodness. I loved this book! Really, really, loved it! The setting. The characters. The storyline. I did not want it to end. I would love to see this turned into a series. That is how much I fell in love with the main characters, Sam & Charlotte. A very precious love story set in a small town in Texas. Actually, it was more than just one love story. It was multiple love stories rolled into one. I could just taste the teas at the Rose Cottage Tearoom and Anita Higman’s description of the town was so vivid that I felt like I had stepped inside of it. It is the depth of her characters that I love most though. A Marriage in Middlebury offers up a variety of characters and I fell in love with Charlotte’s tenderness and strong faith in God the most.

I always like books set in a small town. I love how quaint the town is – I secretly want to live in such a place someday :) It didn’t take me long to get pulled into the story, wondering if Charlotte and Sam would have a second chance to be together. • GOOD NOT MY FAVORITE

Anita Higman is a great author, I enjoy how she writes in a very visual way. She makes the reader feel like they are there. This book started off good, I love that Charlotte makes her own tea for her tea room. The community of Middlebury is fun, I liked this setting. The only thing about this story is it didn’t completely capture my attention. It dragged on for me in the middle, the ending is rather predictable, so it took a lot for me to finish the book. Perhaps this book is just a tad too wordy but the meaning behind the main characters story is great. If you are in the mood for a slower easy going tea read you will like this.

I absolutely LOVE this heart warming story. I can picture the quaint Rose Hill Tea Cottage where the town’s residents gather for more than just a cup of tea. It’s a place where people can find comfort in the out pouring of their hearts and souls and Charlotte is the perfect person to help them in any way she can. This one hands down wins a 5 out of 5 stars in my book and is one to be enjoyed over some butter cookies, a cup of your favorite blend of hot tea and a cozy place to cuddle up for a great novel. • MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY REVIEW

What a sweet romance novel Anita Higman has come up with in her book “A Marriage in Middlebury”. I enjoy Christian romance if it is well-written and not too cheesy, and I would recommend Higman’s novel to most anyone who enjoys this genre. It covers the spectrum of star-crossed lovers, a happy ending, comedy, and characters who are not irritating. In my mind, that’s a good book.

You will like these characters who are charming and live in a great little town. You will feel emotional when you find out the background of Charlotte and Sam, who missed an opportunity to wed decades ago when they were in love. And it sounds to me like this is just the first in a series? I’d hop on board to continue reading about these characters.

This is the perfect book to read on a lazy weekend afternoon with your favorite cup of tea, a fuzzy blanket and plenty of time. You won’t want to put it down.

  • MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY

I really found this book enjoyable! It was an easy read that I got into right from the very beginning! The characters were great, but I also fell in love with Middlebury and wished I could go for a visit to Charlotte’s shop for a cup of her specially blended tea! I think I would be a regular there!?!

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY ~ REVIEW

A Marriage in Middlebury is wonderful and I fell in love with this town, it’s people, and each story within it. I sooo appreciated the way the relationship with Charlotte and Sam’s Father was written. I don’t want to “spoil” it for anyone, but suffice to say, I am so glad that Charlotte was able to see the truth and to offer forgiveness despite what was given to her.

  • A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY – ANITA HIGMAN (ENTER ANITA HIGMAN’S DOUBLE KINDLE FIRE GIVEAWAY & RSVP FOR “TEA FOR TWO” 12/12 FACEBOOK PARTY!) 3.5

I liked this book! It was a very nice, sweet, cute romance without all the sex! I liked all the characters, good character development. And I liked the setting – a tea room, perfect! I wanted to go there. There was also a few twists and a little suspense.
I have been watching “Cedar Cove” on TV (the series based on the books by Debbie Macomber) and this book reminded me very much of that. It had the same feel to it.

  • QUAINT AND CUTE A MARRIAGE IN MIDDLEBURY DOES NOT DISSAPOINT

This book was so wittingly cute and such a fun nice read I enjoyed it immensely.

I love a book where the side characters are given as much care and attention as the main characters. And that is what you get in A Marriage in Middlebury.
