Fall in love with this cozy story about two people from different worlds.

Franny Martin is an Oklahoma farm girl who’s preparing to spend the holidays alone…again. Then Charlie Landau shows up one day, all wealth and polish, and offers to buy Franny’s farm. Franny has no money to speak of, but she is clever and spirited, and she’s more than happy to sell the farm and move to the city.

As Sinatra croons from the radio and Christmas descends upon her charming farm, Franny teaches Charlie the curious and sometimes comical ways of country life. In the process, they unearth some discoveries of the heart—that sometimes love comes when you’re least ready for it. Will the holidays bring their most impossible dreams within reach?

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Author Anita Higman invites readers to kick off the season with a spirited holiday tale

Seattle: Often times the mere mention of Christmas stirs cherished memories and makes us nostalgic of years gone by and the ones we love. Maybe you even begin to hum your favorite Christmas tune. Author Anita Higman harnesses that sentimentality and affection for the holiday season in her latest release, A Merry Little Christmas
(Summerside Press/October 2012/hardcover/ISBN 978-1-60936-688-9/$14.99).

Higman invites readers to fall in love with this cozy story about two people from different worlds. Franny Martin is an Oklahoma farm girl who’s preparing to spend the holidays alone… again. She has spent all of her adult life keeping the family farm going after her parents’ death, and she struggles to make ends meet. Franny has no money to speak of, but she is clever and spirited. Her love for music drives her dream to sell the farm and move to the city.

Then Charlie Landau shows up one day, all wealth and polish, and offers to buy Franny’s farm. Charlie has been trying to prove himself and meet the expectations of his wealthy father after falling short on one business venture after another. He is determined to make his latest endeavor work – running a farm–that is, after taking a few lessons from Franny.

Even though Franny and Charlie come from very different backgrounds, they quickly find a common bond. In the back of her mind, Franny fears the bigger life that lies beyond her small world. At the same, Charlie is afraid of letting his father down yet again. Both must face their fear of failure and come to the realization that life on the other side isn’t always as it appears.

Drawing on her own experience of growing up in Oklahoma, Higman brings the Martin farm to vivid life. Yet, that’s not the only part of her childhood that she brings to the story. “Even though A Merry Little Christmas is really a love story, I felt it needed some additional conflict, and some of the racial struggles of the 60s seemed to be the right choice for this particular plot,” says Higman. “I grew up in the 60s, and I was always interested in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. In some ways I feel I’ve waited my whole life to write this book. It came easily to me in that it’s been percolating in my imagination for a long time, but it was also hard to write because I had to consider more deeply the injustices of that era. Even though it sounds like a cliché, A Merry Little Christmas truly was the book of my heart.”

As Sinatra croons from the radio and Christmas descends upon her charming farm, Franny teaches Charlie the curious and sometimes comical ways of country life. In the process, they unearth some discoveries of the heart -that sometimes love comes when you’re least ready for it. Will the holidays bring their most impossible dreams within reach?

A Merry Little Christmas is the first release in Summerside’s Songs of the Season™ line. Each year, readers will get into the spirit of Christmas with a seasonal romance. Each giftable hardcover book will bear the title of a popular Christmas song from a nostalgic era combining romance and small-town charm.

Suggested interview questions

* What inspired you to set a romantic Christmas story in the 1960s and incorporate Jim Crow laws and segregation?

* Why did you set the book around the time of the holidays, as opposed to another time of year?

* The farm scenes in A Merry Little Christmas seem pretty realistic. Did you grow up in the country?

* Franny and Charlie come from very different backgrounds but are both looking for something very different from the way they’ve grown up. Do you think, as humans, we all have a “grass is always greener on the other side” mentality?

* Do you think that sometimes we don’t pray for what we want because we are afraid of getting what we pray for?

* Music is very important to both Franny and Charlie. Was there a reason why you incorporated music into the story?

* What is your favorite Christmas song?

* Does the song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” have a special significance to you?

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

I liked Franny; she talks to God, loves her hogs, loves music,
and hums Christmas Sinatra. It doesn’t make sense to admire fictional
characters, but so many – like Higman’s Franny – are forgiving, are
willing to see that really mean, crabby people might act that way for a
reason that we need to forgive and understand. Nearly impossible for me.
Also, I didn’t get much of a farming lesson, but Higman does supply a
history lesson. Franny sees the stoned radio station employee, other
memories of the sixties…and worse, the prejudice that exists in the big
city and in her small town. I was shocked to see Jim Crow still happening
in the 1960s!? Franny’s action on the tractor to defeat the prejudice is
    great!

  • A STAND-OUT CHRISTMAS NOVEL

This is not your usual schmaltzy Christmas romance novel. While it is set on an Oklahoma farm, its 1961 setting is modern enough to set it apart from the pioneer and Amish novels prevalent in the bookstores today. By the same token, the references to the Civil Rights Movement gives it a historical context not found in a contemporary romance. For anyone who enjoys a good novel set in that time period, this novel should stand out.

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

A Merry Little Christmas is a very sweet book. It was a quick read and I was able to reading it in one afternoon. While the story takes place during the Christmas season, I wouldn’t really call it a “Christmas” book. The story takes place in the 60s when racial equality is not even close to a reality. Times were more innocent and things were a lot slower paced.

I liked the overall story. It is one of faith, forgiveness, friendship and love. I definitely would recommend it to anyone!

  • THIS BOOK ROOM: A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

This story had more facets than I originally thought – it’s not just about romance, but about the social issues of this time period as well. That was an unexpected and lovely surprise. It was fun to read about Franny’s and Charlie’s adventures on the farm, too. I imagine if I could live many lives, I would spend one of them on a farm. I don’t think I’m spending this life on a farm, though, so those bits of the story were fun to read.

It brings to light so many different emotions and how each of the characters interacts with one another makes this one memorable long after you finish reading it. It’s almost like you witnessed these events yourself. Anita does an exceptional job at transporting the reader right back into the heart of Oklahoma in the 1960′s through the music and references to items like record players, transistor radios, and even the old time diner experience is rich and vividly described. It’s things like these that truly enhance the experience for the reader and make them all the more real. I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and think it’s a must read for your Christmas season.

  • “A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS” BY ANITA HIGMAN

Anita Higman writes like Grace Livingston Hill. She writes of characters with real problems and issues, clearly placed in distinct settings, but there’s almost a rosy glow about them. Though their problems are big, both personal and culturally speaking, you just know that everything will be okay. There are no tears, because no matter how horrible the situation gets, Higman writes peace into every line of the story.

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

I thought this was a sweet story. I enjoyed the love story unfolding between Franny and Charlie but also enjoyed all of the other people who joined the story one by one. It was fun to take a step back in time to small town America and experience the holidays through the eyes of the main characters.

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS BY ANITA HIGMAN

At first glance this book seems to be your usual run-of-the-mill romance all wrapped up in pretty Christmas paper. A Merry Little Christmas has more depth than that, actually. Tackling family dysfunction and racial tensions of the pre-civil rights movement era, this book takes on some tough subjects while still retaining it’s romance and happy ending.

  • AMERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS BOOK REVIEW

love reading a good holiday story around the holidays. Kinda like watching a good movie.

I was sent A Merry Little Christmas by Anita Higman to read. It’s set in the 60′s, which I love that time period. I thought it was a great read and would recommend it as a holiday love story.

  • BOOK REVIEW: “A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS” BY ANITA HIGMAN

Anita Higman knows how to write convincing characters that we fall in love with and want to succeed. “A Merry Little Christmas” is a really nice, warm love story similar to what we used to read way back when. This book is a keeper. I recommend that you put it somewhere you can find it easily again next year when you’ll want to read it again. I liked this book. Well done.

  • A TALE OF LOVE, REDEMPTION AND HOPE

This was a VERY sweet tale. To me, almost written for the YA crowd rather than an adult readership. It’s a classic Romeo and Juliet story playing out on a farm in Oklahoma but fortunately no one has to die. There are racial overtones as this is the early sixties and as always it is very hard to remember how terribly people of color were treated at that time. The book is a tale of love and redemption but most of all of hope.

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS BY ANITA HIGMAN

In my opinion each of the characters had a painful past causing the present life hard to endure at times. The difference in the characters was that some of them trusted in God’s will and endured their lives with patience. Those that had hardened their hearts towards God tried to force their own will on others causing much pain themselves and others.

The author writes of a Christmas Gift that’s not under a tree or wrapped up in pretty paper. It is the Gift of Love God gives to His children through the birth of His Son Jesus.

  • AS WARM AS A CUP OF HOT CHOCOLATE

A Merry Little Christmas is just one of those stories that you’ve gotta read while snuggled in a warm blanket and sipping a cup of hot tea. It’s small enough to finish in one sitting, yet filling enough to keep you smiling the rest of the day. How’s that for a good book?

  • CHARMING CHRISTMAS NOVEL!

Anita Higman has penned a charming Christmas novel. While I’m a definite city girl, I enjoyed the farm setting and marveled just a bit at how quickly Charlie caught on to the many jobs that needed to be learned. More than a simple romance, this novel reflects the racial unease of the early 1960′s as well as the age-old quest of a young man trying to find his own way while still longing to please his overbearing father. Joy & pain, laughter & tears, and faith & forgiveness are found within the pages of this book and perhaps, within the heart of the reader. Don’t miss this tender novel. Have yourself A Merry Little Christmas!

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS BY ANITA HIGMAN IS A WONDERFUL READ!

I absolutely enjoyed meeting the characters in this book. Franny is a hoot ans she reminds me a few people I know, feisty, spirited and determined. Charlie was perfect for her! But then Franny was just the feisty kick in the pants he needed too! Watching them grow together was so enjoyable. The whole way through I kept finding myself rooting for them to finally get things worked out between them. The book flowed easily and I found it hard to put it down, something I appreciate a lot. I want to get involved with the characters. It makes them more ‘real’ in my mind, and Charlie and Franny sure seemed real.

  • BOOK REVIEW – A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

I like that we see the good versus evil in this book.
I also liked the relationship between Noma, a black woman, and Franny. There is caring for one another with no regard for the fact that they are not the same race. I need to clarify here that this story takes place in the early 60′s when things were a lot different than they are today. The Christian love that shines through between them all is beautiful.

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

What a wonderful little story set during the Christmas season. I was drawn into the story from the first pages, Franny was such a spunky, full of life person, and her first meeting with Charlie where she finds herself in the mud really had me laughing. I really enjoyed seeing the relationship develop between Franny and Charlie, I wanted them to have their happy ever after. The author provides a few twists to keep the story interesting. Anyone looking for a nice story to kick off their holiday reading season should really check out “A Merry Little Christmas.”

  • AN ENJOYABLE STORY!

A Merry Little Christmas by Anita Higman is a sweet, enjoyable story. It’s not an edge of your seat, can’t put it down type of book, but just right for when you want an interesting, warm story. That doesn’t mean there aren’t serious issues addressed in the book- racism in the 1960s is part of the story. I enjoyed reading about farm life, and about two people from completely different types of lives coming together for a common goal, and discovering their feelings for each other.

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

There is much to like about A Merry Little Christmas. Franny is a very likable, spunky heroine, and her romance with Charlie is sweet. These days, I’m all about stories where “older” women find love! Also, I really enjoyed the subplots involving Charlie’s brother and Franny’s friend.

  • BLOG CONTEST, ANITA HIGMAN

I enjoyed this book, loved the music references. Franny was a girl way ahead of her time, for her area, but she was passionate about everything she believed in. The things hard to read in this book was the prejudice that abounded in the area she lived and in the city also. It was hard to read the story of the loss of Franny’s parents and their handyman. Over all I would rate this book with four stars, a quick holiday read.

  • “A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS” IS A CHARMING STORY TO START OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON

A Merry Little Christmas is a romance, but not the over-the-top unbelievable kind. The characters aren’t unusually “stunning” or remarkable. In fact, at 33, the main character Franny is older than the typical romantic heroine. She’s the kind of woman you might expect to be your next door neighbor or a friend that you meet for coffee. The story is down-to-earth with believable characters that I really liked. I was pleasantly surprised by the storyline. Of course you know that the two characters will end up in love, but it was a fun journey getting to that point.

A Merry Little Christmas was a light and enjoyable read for me. “Cozy” accurately describes the feeling it delivers. It’s a feel-good kind of story and I liked reading something that made me smile. It’s a great way to laun

  • A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

There is a murder that is solved from the past. Characters have to choose to love people for who they are the color of their skin or even their status in life. The author does a wonderful job encouraging readers to take all of who they are to the Lord whether it is their fears, pain, past, hopes, dreams, futures, everything and anything. We need to surrender completely to the Lord. There is hope and encouragement when we walk with others as they learn to wrestle not with flesh and blood, but the real enemy the devil. Looking at others and seeing them as God sees them isn’t always easy, but it is always a choice. Great novel!

  • A CUTE AND CHARMING LOVE STORY

This was one of those books that made me want to cozy up next to a fire with a blanket and a glass of hot cocoa to read. There was just something so charming about the whole story. It wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was heartfelt. I think Higman did a great job with pulling the reader into the story.

I really liked Franny. She was strong and independent – but mainly because she had to be. And even though the end was predictable I still enjoyed reading this one.

  • MORE THAN THE SYNOPSIS SUGGESTS

A Merry Little Christmas begins with two people who are instantly drawn to each other and are given the opportunity to explore their new feelings…but it continues on with challenges and hardships and little surprises (both painful and precious) that draw Franny and Charlie out – out of the past and outward in their thinking and experiences. It begins with lots of clever lines and humor, and continues on ever deeper into more serious issues. But it also begins with a sweet love story and continues on with a sweet love story. An interesting and intriguing Christmas romance!
