What people are saying!

Years ago, I overheard Cara Putman brainstorming on Shadowed by Grace with literary agent Donald Maass. I was hooked on the storyline and asked if she’d let me read it when it was written. Years later, she sent it. Wow! I was not disappointed!

From the first chapter of Shadowed by Grace to the last, my heart pounded with excitement. With an authentic knowledge of Word War II history, a gentle hand of artistry, and a heart for true love, Cara Putman draws in readers until they feel they’ve traveled through time to watch a story unfold of heroes and the women they love. — Cindy Woodsmall, New York Times bestselling author

I literally devoured Shadowed By Grace by Cara Putman and was unable to think of anything else until I finished it. Full of intriguing characters and bursting with engrossing details of World War II and the Monument Men, the novel revealed history I knew nothing about. Everyone should read this book and understand this unique part of our history. — Colleen Coble, bestselling author

Cara Putman’s Shadowed by Grace is an amazing story of a young female photographer who goes into a war zone to seek the truth and to possibly save her dying mother. When Rachel Justice is assigned to the care of Lt. Scott Lindstrom, she is already fighting her own internal war. Scott is trying to save sacred treasurers but soon he sees that Rachel is the real treasure. Set against the backdrop of World War II, this book is action-packed and fast paced but hugely romantic. Well researched and tightly written, Shadowed by Grace takes us right into the fray and doesn’t let go until the last kiss. Beautiful! — Lenora Worth, New York Times bestselling author

In Shadowed By Grace, Cara Putman exhibits a gracious and impactful understanding of the greatest generation. Her passion for these characters, and this time in our nation’s history, shines through in this story. Marybeth Whalen, author and co-founder of the online women’s book club, She Reads.

Steeped in rich historical detail, Shadowed by Grace is a fresh and fascinating foray into the annals of WWII, capturing the reader with a plot as turbulent as the war that raged across Europe … and as breathless as the love story that burgeons within its midst. — Julie Lessman, award-winning author

  • “SHADOWED BY GRACE” BY CAROL PUTMAN BOOK REVIEW

. . . I soon discovered that there was more depth to this story than I realized. The book was historically dense, and I was completely oblivious to how the war affected Italy. That seems to be one of the countries that is only mentioned in passing. Envisioning a female photographer who fearlessly took breathtaking photos from the front lines made the story all the more intriguing. The Christian message was subtle but strong. And the last third of the book was filled with intense action and a bit of pathos. Although the romance was sappy I was able to excuse that due to the amazing story this Christian novel told.

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE BY CARA C. PUTMAN

I was instantly attracted to this book for several reasons. It’s got a great cover, it’s set in Italy during WWII and it’s about the Monuments Men, a topic I have not read about before. We have the promise of a strong heroine, an American photographer who sets out to take photos dangerously close to the front lines with the hopes of also finding the father she never knew.

I dug into this story with high expectations but soon found myself struggling with it. I definitely liked that the story revolves around the efforts to save great works of art during the war. This really lent a good angle to the story. And Italy’s works of art are priceless! I did not realize what people did to preserve them from the bombings.

  • ARTFUL WRITING TO THIS MONUMENTAL READ

This is a love story surrounded by treacherous conditions of war. Ms. Putman’s exclusive subject on saving historical art masterpieces was literally unknown to me and I reverentially appreciate learning how this world has been able to continue the study and enjoyment of historic art because of a few military men assigned their duty as Monument Men.. God is our eternal guardian and brings about good from the worst of circumstances through his children and angels.

  • DELIGHTFUL READ

The cover of this book is beautiful and so is the story within. While the relationship between Rachel and Scott “happened” a little fast and some parts were a little too predictable, Shadowed by Grace was a delightful read. Putman includes a love story, a bit of suspense, humor, and action. The research that was put into the book is evident in that Putman captures the era in great detail. You almost can feel as if you are there in the midst of the story. This was my first novel by Putman to read and I look forward to reading more soon.

  • ENJOYED THE HISTORY AND THE STORY

This story is a different look at World War II that I really enjoyed. I didn’t know about the Monuments Men and now I am intrigued.
The Monuments Men angle is just part of the story. There is a lot going on, but the story was not overwhelming to read. It’s obvious that the author did a lot of research and incorporated historical facts throughout without bogging down the story.
I think it’s an all around good book and I hope that she plans to write more stories about the Monuments Men.

  • BOOK REVIEW: SHADOWED BY GRACE BY CARA PUTMAN

The story was really well written with, what I am sure was a large amount of research done by the author. Cara Putman weaves together a story of a woman seeking to find a lost family member, of a man following his passion for art even if it leads him to a war zone, of determination and faith in humanity and in God into a wonderful work of historical fiction.

With action, mystery and romance all blended together to make a snapshot in a moment of history where two people were Shadowed by Grace that only God can give.

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE: A STORY OF MONUMENTS MEN BY CARA C. PUTMAN

Cara C. Putman writes with authority about the world during WWII especially Italy, Germany, and The United States, the jobs of Monument Men, the military during WWII, and works of art of Italy. As I read this book I could see these works of art in my mind from the vivid descriptions through out this book. I enjoyed the characters in this book especially Rachel. Her determination and dedication to her art were heart warming. Also her journey to finding God in her life again especially through Scott’s display of faith. I felt like I was there watching the events unfold. I loved the historical facts that went into this book. I learned quite a bit about WWII I didn’t know. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you won’t be disappointed. I give this book 4 stars! I look forward to reading more from Cara C. Putman.

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE

I thought this was a good Christian historical fiction book set during WWII. The setting is mostly in Italy with a few scenes back home in the beginning. The author does a good job with descriptions making you feel like you are there. The characters and plot are well developed, interesting, and unique. It kept my attention from the beginning. I loved the interaction between Rachel and Scott. There was also the subplot of her finding her father to hopefully save her mother. I did not know anything about art during the war in Italy so that was interesting to learn. The faith element was there but not preachy. Recommended to fans of Christian historical fiction book. :)

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE BY CARA PUTMAN

World War II is one of my favorite time periods to read and learn about, and Putman’s newest release made me love the era even more. Shadowed by Grace explores the true history of the Monuments Men, men who were devoted to saving the art that Germans destroyed during the war. The novel transports the reader to a significant time of fighting and sacrifice that teaches the reader more than they’ve ever known. Plus, there’s a strong Christian message woven into the story that asks the reader to explore their faith and think about their trust in God.

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE

Shadowed by Grace by Cara C. Putman captured me on the first page. I’ve always been enamored by the 1940s and this book fed that hunger that I have. It led me from the USA to Italy, a country that I’m somewhat familiar with since I’ve heard stories of it all of my life. It was interesting to travel with the characters and see the country through their eyes, knowing that it wasn’t much different than when my immigrant grandfather knew it.

This is my first novel by Cara Putnam. I will be revisiting more of Cara’s work in the future. If you enjoy Brock and Bodie Thoene and their stories you will enjoy Shadowed by Grace. I loved the subject of the Monuments men. The movie that is also based on this topic is being released this weekend as well. The genre is Romantic Suspense and while the focus is on Scott and Rachel’s relationship there is more to the story. The author stays true to the history of the 1940s and the World War II. The only note is that I felt that the author waited a long time to move the plot along.

  • FINDING PEACE IN A TIME OF WAR!,

This took me into a side of the war I never knew existed as a division of men know as the Monument Men, protected the culture of the country by guarding and locating precious works of art. This is based on true life events that transpired during the war along with a touch of romance to keep the story interesting. Being a huge fan of WWII history I absolutely LOVED this and wanted to know how it would all play out with WWII Italy being the backdrop. I was not disappointed and easily give this novel a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

  • DESPITE THE AUTHOR’S EFFORTS, THE STORY DID NOT CLINCH AS IT BOUNCED A LOT, A LITTLE LIKE A RIDE IN THOSE MILITARY JEEPS!

A promising synopsis (as well as a nice cover!) bringing forward the harrowing recovery of art treasures by Allied Forces during the withdrawing of Hitler’s henchmen. This sums up the total story in a nutshell of Shadowed by Grace for readers fond of historical facts and there are plenty in Cara C. Putman’s novel!
Alas there has to be also a bit of romance in the script along with a touch of mystery for those readers who favour more than just the plain facts however dramatic these are by themselves!
This part of the script however did not flow as well as I hoped and felt fragmented, so much so I was glad to see the end.

  • DECENT HISTORICAL ROMANCE, FICTION

I can tell capturing the emotions, the sights, and sounds of the war were truly important to Cara Putnam. From reading the descriptions, I was pulled into walking the dusty roads, seeing the dilapidated buildings, and feeling the helplessness and devastation that those in the WWII experienced. In this respect, Putnam does a great job in recreating the world her characters were in and our past. I feel that this is something we do need to not forget about or take lightly. I do love the deep emotions Putnam evokes to her readers. In my mind I could picture what the book would play out as a movie!

Shadowed by Grace offered a glimpse into this special department of the war. Men who had knowledge and a passion for art and the preservation, volunteered for this unit, to go with the US Army in WW2 and work with the towns and cities as the army pushed through to protect these priceless pieces of history. It was an effort that seemed to me to help bond Italy and America together as they fought together to preserve, unlike the Nazi’s who destroyed.

  • REVIEW – SHADOWED BY GRACE

Shadowed By Grace arrived in bookstores just in time to tie-in with George Clooney’s The Monument Men, which both are about the real-life Monument Men during WWII. I’m the not biggest of fan of WWII historical books, but I found myself instantly engulfed in Cara C. Putman’s story. The characters are well-written and the descriptions of the era are wonderful. The author has a great storytelling ability and I look forward to reading more of her titles. Overall, Shadowed By Grace is one of the best WWII historical fiction (though I haven’t read many) and my favorite read this year, well, so far.

  • It was fascinating to read about the unique challenges Monuments Men faced, from not being taken seriously to not being trusted by the native people. The struggle Rachel has to feel worthy of being loved since she grew up without a father is something I think a lot of women and men can relate to, as is her questioning of how God could let bad things happen. I think men would like this story as well as women because of the war aspect and the strong male character.

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE IS A BOOK YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT DOWN!

This is the first time I have read a book by Cara C. Putman. I have a thing about historical books, fiction and non-fiction, so this book intrigued me from the start! it is set in one of my favorite time periods, WWII. What also thrilled me was the tie-in with the Monuments Men, a group of non-soldier soldiers whose mission was to retrieve the many great works of art that the Nazi’s stole all over Europe. It’s a group of men who are seldom talked about in history.

But the story is much more than a young woman seeking her father and getting involved with the Monuments Men. The story is deep with family ties and emotional connections. Rachel is seeking her father only to find her relationship with her heavenly Father to grow strong and deep through the process. The suspense and excitement throughout the book grabbed and kept my attention. Cara’s descriptive talent is wonderful and her details on history very much appreciated!

I think this is a book anyone who enjoys historical novels will find a winner!!

  • UNIQUE AND UNFORGETTABLE

My favorite part of this unique story was that Cara Putman’s writing drives forward with every word. I could hardly put Shadowed by Grace down, and, when I did, I found myself wondering what would happen next. This story is not only well-researched, well-written, and unique–it’s compelling in its pace, too!

This book is well-researched because Cara knows her history!

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE

Rachel’s search for her father was, in a word, heart wrenching. I cannot believe how emotionally involved I got from just reading about the lengths she went to find her father! Putnam wrote Rachel as a very determined young woman, innocent to a point about the world, yet mature enough to realize that life has it’s ugliness. Rachel was a solid character, with the perfect balance of personality, action, and vivacity.

The story plot itself is edge-of-your-seat material; you won’t want to put it down! I had a hard time getting my nose out of this book, because the story moved right along and kept my attention the entire way through. I did wish we could have had more on the relationship between Rachel and her mother, but ultimately, it added to the mysterious elements of the story. I really enjoyed this novel, and I can’t wait to see what else Putman is bringing to the table with the Story of Monuments Men series.

  • BOOK REVIEW: SHADOWED BY GRACE

That little glimpse of history, as well as the unfolding of Rachel’s character kept my attention throughout the book. Some books I wish to gobble right up, reading for hours on end, unable to put them down. Others I can come and go from, but get enough emotionally invested in to want to finish reading. This book fell in the second category. The story was beautiful, but moved slowly and deliberately. The history of the art was very well done. I would have loved to see a little bit more WWII history divulged to create more tension and suspense, but felt satisfied with what was given. Overall, a very nicely written war-time romance, with a twinge of intrigue.

  • UNIQUE

This book is rather unique. Set during World War II you read about Rachel and her quest to find her father and save her mother. After arriving in Italy she is on the front lines of the battle taking pictures. This aspect of the story is my favorite part. While we look back at older pictures of the war we don’t really think about the fact that someone took that picture and lived! Easily they could have died yet we have these pictures to tell the story. The romance is sweet but predictable. The back story about her father I didn’t really enjoy, it was depressing, yet realistic. I loved the setting and the pictures but this is a book I probably wouldn’t read again.
If you like World War II history you will enjoy this book.

Rachel’s involvement with the Monuments Men adds so much historical detail to this story and is also a part of history that I know little about, so I was very eager to find out about this part of history. I enjoyed my “visit” to Italy (who wouldn’t?!) and thought the art history details were neatly woven into the story. I felt that these tidbits enhanced rather than detracted from the story, and now I’m itching to go check out some of this art for myself! I’m also very intrigued to learn more about the Monuments Men and will definitely be seeing the movie that releases next month. • “SHADOWED BY GRACE” BY CARA C. PUTNAM

Rachel’s very quest – to find the father she never met and save her mother’s life – is a doozy. Tracking a man whose name she doesn’t know in the midst of war with only a sketchbook as a potential clue is next to impossible, but it makes for a spectacular story, especially when you throw in a Monument Man as a love interest.

Shadowed by Grace is the absolute best World War II story I’ve read in years. Don’t miss this one.

  • THE CALLING

This story started of kind of slow for me because there is so much detail, but as I kept reading, the details started to get more and more interesting to follow. Cara Putman sure did a fantastic job in researching the details of the time frame of the setting. I had never heard of the elite group of soldiers called the Monuments Men, so meeting Scott Lindstrom and his knowledge of historical art was a special treat for me. I took some art classes in college and knew some about fresco paintings, so it was very interesting as Ms. Putman talked about a lot of the fresco paintings that were damaged in the war.

I encourage you to pick up a copy of Shadowed by Grace and follow Scott and Rachel as they do the jobs they were sent into the war zone to do, as well as working to find Rachel’s father

I am a history buff. WWII history is another area besides Civil War that my husband reenacts and I am starting to get into. This book seemed to be right up my alley for this. If you like history or know anything about the Monument Men(or want to know something about them) read this book. I don’t know a lot about the Italian front during the war but what I know and what the book discusses are the same. I love that the author did research into the history and war before writing. The book is well written and will suck you in from the beginning. But a word of warning, make sure you have time blocked out to read the book before you begin. You won’t want to put this book down!

  • SHADOWED BY GRACE BY CARA PUTMAN

Anyone who reads my blog knows that I love Historical Fiction! This is the first book that I have read by Cara Putman. I was very pleased with this book. I had a hard time putting this book down.

I had no idea about the Monuments Men and their quest to save priceless art from the Nazi’s during War World II. I know that there are some organizations that now recover stolen art during that era. Who knew that this subject could make such a fascinating fictional book? I had to look up the Monuments Men online myself to see if they existed!

The characters have so much depth in them. The author did an amazing job developing the characters throughout this story. Cara Putman also made the story feel so realistic. The emotions are raw at times and the descriptions of the settings almost make you feel like you are there. I felt like I stepped back into history.

I highly recommend this story the author did a lot of research and it truly is a unique story that is unforgettable.

  • “CAPTAIN RACHEL JUSTICE, SIR.”

*Shadowed by Grace* is a very well-paced historical novel where the writing is sensory.
I could feel the pounding in my head after the shells fell, I could see the glow of candlelight in the tiny restaurant where Rachel and Scott found near-normalcy for a short while, and when I read about Scott and Tyler flying along the roads in the Jeep, I wanted to grab for the dash-board!

The plot of this novel hinges upon a rather obscure and fascinating aspect of the war years: The Monuments Men.

As my friend pointed out when I told her about this book, a people’s art embodies their history, flows out of their culture, and carries their hopes.
So it is really neat that we had a contingency of men working to rescue and preserve the art and artifacts in places like Italy during the War.

This is a moving story that asks the question of how much anyone would do to save a family member. While Rachel is trying to save her mother she finds herself in great danger. The author, Cara Putman wrote a fictional story that was so interesting. A novel set in World War II about people who played important parts in the war. SHADOWED BY GRACE is Book One in a wonderful new series of novels. Ms. Putman couldn’t have picked a better title for the book than SHADOWED BY GRACE. The meaning of the story meshes with the title as you read through the book. Ms. Putman has written with such emotion of war, romances, and relationships between family members. The author wove everything together so that it meshed just right. The setting of WWII, the humor, the mystery and the scenes which were so startling real. Every time you turned the page, you found something that was unexpected. That keeps you wanting more, wanting to find out what is next. That to me is the sign of a good book. 4 STARS.

  • BOOK REVIEW: SHADOWED BY GRACE

Fans of Sarah Sundin’s WWII novels should find another favorite in Shadowed by Grace. Well written and researched, Putman captures the despair of a defeated people and the hope that comes with liberation. The plight of lost, stolen and damaged art and antiquities is described in detail. Shadows abound — shadows of regrets, fear and aloneness, but also of hope, love and grace. Putman’s characters are also well-developed. Rachel lives with the effects of not having a father, and Scott wrestles with the desire to please both man and God. The faith message is strong and the characters grow through the book.

  • REVIEW: SHADOWED BY GRACE BY CARA PUTMAN

This Christian book is worth reading as an excellent introduction to the Monuments Men story, which is fascinating. Author Cara Putman even includes a helpful list of historical works she used for her research. While the story of Italian art in World War II is portrayed vividly, the novel falters, perhaps because of its unclear plot. Some characters’ actions are not properly motivated, and, despite the horrors of war and Rachel’s urgent personal quest to save her mother, the main emotions are romantic. However, the characters, especially Rachel, are memorable and easy to identify with.

Cara paints the Italian countryside with a wide brush. I felt like I was there with Rachel and Scott as they went from Rome, Florence, and places in between to capture photographs and gather information on stolen Italian art.

  • A GOOD ONE-TIME READ…

I think I’ve read almost every Christian fiction book that has been set in WWII. I really love the intrigue, emotion, and history of that era. However, the story of priceless art that disappeared during Hitler’s reign is fairly new to me after reading Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey’s book a few years ago, Chasing Mona Lisa (I guess I did see a Hogan’s Heroes rerun that involved some stolen art…but, um, although enjoyable, I haven’t based much of my WWII history on that sitcom). Anyway, I was excited to read Shadowed by Grace, which dealt with the ‘Monuments Men,’ men who were given the task of recovering and protecting Europe’s invaluable art. Yes, there was excitement and intrigue…If you are enthusiastic for WWII fiction, you’ll likely enjoy the tidbits of history and style in Shadowed by Grace.

SHADOWED BY GRACE is the newest book by Ms. Putman. I enjoyed getting to know Rachel and Scott. Rachel is a strong heroine, disobeying her dying mother’s advice to not delve into the past, she talks her boss into allowing her to go into a war-torn country and photograph images. I have never heard of the monument men before and it was interesting to read about this little known side of WWII. I enjoy reading stories about this time period. Ms. Putman is a talented writer and I’m glad to have another book by her cross my path. I’m also looking forward to reading more about the monument men in WWII. • BOOK REVIEW: SHADOWED BY GRACE

Cara Putnam has done an excellent job on this work of historical fiction. She did a wonderful job of incorporating fact into a story that is captivating and intriguing. The way the characters related to each other was enjoyable and I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times. The settings come alive with Putnam’s descriptions and add an element to the story that really draws the reader in. I really appreciate the research that Cara Putnam put into this book to stay as true to historical fact as possible while crafting a beautiful story. From what I gather, this is the first book in a series about the Monuments Men of WWII. I can’t wait to see what other stories the author has up her sleeve.

  • SURPRISING BOOK ABOUT THE WWII ERA

The clean, classy scenes in the book countered by the cloak and dagger missions made Shadowed by Grace seem almost like a black-and-white spy movie. The desperation that Rachel Justice felt in searching for her father turned my emotions upside down. How in the world could she find him with so little to go on? There was so much riding on the fact that she could be in the right place at the right time. I felt myself hanging on every word until the end of the story.
