A Mother’s Secret

Book two in the Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series.

Carolyn Lapp dreams of marrying for love. But will the errors of her past destroy this dream forever?

Carolyn Lapp longs to have a traditional Amish family. But she lives on her brother’s farm with her parents and her 15-year old son, Benjamin. Carolyn has never revealed the identity of Benjamin’s father and lives daily with the guilt and shame of her youthful indiscretion. Her brother simply will not forgive her.

His answer is to arrange a practical marriage for Carolyn to Saul, a widower with a little girl. But Carolyn isn’t convinced that Saul really loves her and believes he is simply looking for someone to help raise his daughter.

When Benjamin causes trouble at a local horse auction, horse breeder Joshua Glick decides that he must be taught a lesson. Carolyn and Joshua are unmistakably drawn to each other, but Joshua mistakenly assumes that Benjamin is Carolyn’s brother. Carolyn fears that if he discovers the truth, her past will destroy their budding romance.

After years of shame and loneliness, Carolyn suddenly has two men vying for her attention. But which of them will give her the family-and the unconditional love-she’s longed for?

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET, HEARTS OF LANCASTER GRAND HOTEL SERIES, BOOK 2 BY AMY CLIPSTON

This was a heart wrenching story of love lost, trials and tribulation that lead to forgiveness and reconciliation. I found that once Carolyn was able to trust God with her future she was able to find peace for her and her son. What a gift from God Joshua was for Carolyn’s whole family. Her whole family had suffered from her mistakes as a teen. This blessed author must have a tender heart to dig so deep to find the tender, fragile emotions of so many characters.

    I highly recommend this book.

  • A BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW

Once again, I am excited to share with you my thoughts on an amazing book from the Amish Fiction genre. If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know this is one of my absolutely fave literature genres. This is the second book in the Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series, and it is a great follow up to book two, yet you could read it without having read the first book and not be too confused.

This book is a bit of a departure from the typical Amish fiction I have read, which often deals with issues in families, marriage, and other relationships amongst younger folks. However, here in A Mother’s Secret you are introduced to an other Amish woman and her journey to forgiveness and how freeing it truly is, especially when God is at the centre.

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET BY AMY CLIPSTON BOOK REVIEW

I read book 1 and could not wait to read this book. I was really torn between liking Carolyn and being mad at her. I liked her because she was waiting to marry for love, and I was mad at her because she could have married well and had a better life for her son. I liked that Joshua was stern with Benjamin, and yet wanted to help him learn about horses too. I liked reading about the horses. I did not know who was a better match for Carolyn, however as the book went on I could see that hearts were started to feel different. This is a book that reminds me of how important family and love are. I am giving this book a 5/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

This book was so good! I really didn’t want to put it down. I mean, here is this poor girl who made a mistake. Her parents forgive her, her community forgives her, but her brother will not. And she herself never truly forgives herself or allows herself to move on with her life. She keeps punishing herself and not letting happiness come to her. But then, due to her son getting in trouble, she meets a man that makes her want to change everything. But will she tell him the truth? Or will she let him believe a lie? Great book. Well written. Can’t wait to read the next installation.

  • ENTERTAINING READ

This story is about faith, healing, love and most of all forgiveness. I really enjoyed this book, it’s not all serious, there are parts that will bring a big smile to your face, maybe even a chuckle or two, especially when Carolyn dishes it out right back at a few certain characters!

  • SPLENDID PICTURE OF GOD’S MERCY

This is my first novel by Amy Clipston to read. The only thing I regret about reading this book is that I have not discovered Clipston before now! She has written a book with believable characters who find themselves in heartbreaking circumstances.
I appreciated how Clipston isn’t preachy, but clearly points to the transforming power of God in lives otherwise hopeless. God delights in showing mercy and Clipston highlights this side of God’s character so eloquently in her book. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

This is a great story about a woman who can’t forgive herself for the mistake she made when she was younger and the judgemental people around her who wouldn’t forgive or forget. A huge mistake made by one of my sons filled me with so much shame and guilt that I felt as if it was all my fault hence I couldn’t forgive myself either. I enjoyed this impressive story of how two people overcome some big obstacles in their lives and find love together.

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET: HEARTS OF LANCASTER GRAND HOTEL BY AMY CLIPSTON #REVIEW

I loved this book. It drew me in right away. I live a few hours away from Lancaster, PA and I’ve always been intrigued by their culture. This book was very different than others I read because it addressed being a single mother within that culture. I found that topic fascinating. Clipston weaves a great tale and I honestly a one point wasn’t sure who Carolyn would pick. The strong faith and family through out the book was also very sweet. I’m looking forward to book three in the series this fall.

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET

In the beginning storyline of A Mother’s Secret, we learn of how one’s past mistakes can shadow them for a lifetime even when the Lord has forgiven them. Because of those mistakes, people in your life can be very judgemental (which should only belong to the Lord)ad it can continuously wound another even when they themselves have been forgiven.
This book is a wonderful read and leaves you with a feeling of love, forgiveness, and redemption. I would recommend it for anyone who needs to be reminded of that.

The author’s descriptions pulled me not only into the setting of the story, but I felt like each character became a friend as well. The christian themes of forgiveness and God’s love is woven in and actually add to the story. • A MOTHER’S SECRET

I always enjoy reading books by Amy Clipston. Her writing is so wonderful and she makes her characters seem so real. I like that she makes her characters with flaws to show that not everyone is perfect. I also like how she puts characters in her stories that sometimes are not likable. This story seemed so real. I really liked the character of Carolyn and didn’t like how some in the community treated her. This goes to show that even Amish people are not perfect and that we all need the grace of God. I look forward to more from Amy, great job.

Lovely read. This is the first of this series I have read as well as my first Amy Clipston. I really enjoyed it…The story was great and Amy’s style of writing leads you straight into the emotions of the characters. From frustration, fear, and pain, to joy, love, and forgiveness, the plot flows nicely from beginning to end…Overall I think it was a nice read with some AWESOME characters that show what true Christian love really is and express forgiveness beautifully, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the Hearts of The Lancaster Grand Hotel; A Dream of Home! :)

  • Most of the time, secrets are not good. I am also not very excited about keeping secrets. I appreciate the truth, no matter how hard it is to digest, being out there. Throughout this book I wanted to scream for Carolyn Lapp to just tell her secret-to just get it out there! Of course, she did it in her own sweet time and I really did enjoy the book. The story is wonderful and a great addition to the series. The “secret” is really what we deal with more in our Enligh lives rather than what the Amish normally deal with. That also added much more excitement and anticipation to the story.

Wow, this is a twisted Amish story, a story that will capture your attention and keep it until you finish reading! I really like Carolyn, and she had a difficult life because of one mistake she made. To make it worse, her jerk of a brother never let her forget that mistake, even though she had been forgiven. I really had a problem with the older brother, because he wanted what was best for his reputation and the nerve of him telling the widower Carolyn’s secret to see if this guy was ‘ok’ with the secret! I am so glad Joshua Glick came into the picture.

  • ENJOYABLE READ FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

Clipston did a great job making the characters believable. While one may not identify with every element for each character, there is so much life happening that every reader can relate to something. I really enjoyed Carolyn Lapp, the main character within this book. As an unwed mother of a teenager, Carolyn’s family tries to marry her off to a widower in a marriage of convenience. Carolyn struggles as she wants a “traditional” Amish family but she really desires a marriage built on love, not convenience. I enjoyed watching Carolyn grow and develop and really discover herself. Mistakes are made, situations and people are forgiven and life goes on in a semi-predictable way. Yet this book was still delightful for me and I would definitely recommend it.

It’s a great story about love, redemption and forgiveness, something we all could stand to learn from. In this day and age when we are so ready to defend and forgive some other things to me that are ALOT worse, this really makes no sense why we are still so unkind to mother’s who made a mistake at a young age.

The details of this story made it a pleasure to read. Even though Carolyn lives under the thumb of her older brother, her vibrant personality peeks through in her loyalty to her son and her compassion for others. Even with a rocky meeting, Joshua soon sees past the walls she has erected and values her friendship. I liked that their relationship progressed slowly but steadily, and both perspectives were shared. One of my favorite characters was Carolyn’s son Benjamin, who was victimized by his two bullying cousins, but rises above his situation to embrace new opportunities. I appreciated the messages of forgiveness and acceptance and I would read this book again.

A Mother’s Secret is the first of Amy’s books that I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it. It’s a fairly light and quick read, but I don’t mean that as a criticism; in fact, that’s often what I’m in the mood for. And in contrast to a lot of lighter reads, Amy deals with some difficult social issues. There’s also good character depth and spiritual elements that made me stop and reflect. . . . I am so glad to discover Amy’s writing, as she did a great job at creating families and characters that I care about – and I feel there is much more to tell. Recommended to fans of Amish fiction.

A Mother’s Secret was a great story of teen pregnancy and how it effects an Amish woman. • “A MOTHER’S SECRET” BY AMY CLIPSTON

A Mother’s Secret is a wild roller-coaster ride of shame, forgiveness, faith, and a woman’s quest for love. Most of us think of the Amish as living peaceful, calm, and quiet lives, if somewhat full of work. That isn’t true, though. As human people just like the rest of us, they make mistakes, are involved with relationships, and have dreams and desires that they may or may not achieve.

  • SOMETIMES THE ONLY THING STANDING IN THE WAY OF OUR OWN HAPPINESS IS US!!!,

I love the premise behind the story of finding forgiveness not so much from others but for yourself. There is freedom in doing that and letting go of the guilt we can carry without realizing the heavy load we bear. I can understand the frustration that Carolyn faces with trying to please everyone for a mistake she made when she was a teenager and in trying to find a suitable father for Benjamin. It would provide a sense of freedom for both of them to not have to face the condemnation from her brother Amos anymore and to give her a sense of self worth in the eyes of those in the Amish community. Well worth every single one of the 5 out of 5 stars. I can’t wait to see what happens next in the third book due out in the fall of this year, A Dream of Home.

I really enjoyed this book!! It took me a couple chapters to get use to the Amish words the author used, but there was a glossary word listing in the beginning of the book to help with the translations. This story was about Godly forgiveness and Carolyn’s journey to find true love and acceptance in her Amish community and with her family. The story line was very good and kept my interest, although I felt like the last chapter was a little rushed. I loved reading about the Amish people and the author’s descriptions about the Amish homes and how they acted and spoke were very authentic.

In this book we get to meet some brand new friends but we also get to find out about some old friends from the first book. I really enjoyed getting to look deeper into Joshua Glick’s life and see what happens for him next.

  • ANOTHER GREAT BOOK IN THE HEARTS OF LANCASTER GRAND HOTEL SERIES

Looking at Amy’s cover, was wetting my appetite for a “good Amish read”! A simple, rather old fashioned cover depicting a young Amish woman who looked deep in thought, stared at me from the table. As I opened the book, I certainly was not disappointed. This was a wonderful, light but great book!! It held my attention from beginning to end. There was just the right amount of mystery, complications, romance to keep me reading. It is a great summer read!

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET

This is one of the best Amish fiction stories that I have had the pleasure of reading. It really deals with some important matters. Matters of the heart. This story is an excellent read and I highly recommend it to all readers.

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET BY AMY CLIPSTON BOOK REVIEW

I really liked the characters in this book. Carolyn was a fun character. She carries a lot of guilt and shame that enables her ability to truly move on with her life. She had a child when she was 16 years old and the father left town before she found out she was pregnant. Her 15 year old son Benjamin has been taking the blunt of his cousin’s horse play and gets blamed for being the instigator of every indiscretion.

  • INCREDIBLE READ!

I adored this book! Clipson had me mesmerized from the very first page. I love the way she unfolds a story. I feel like I’m inside the heroine’s skin, feeling everything she is feeling. Maybe that’s why a couple of secondary characters really got my ire up. Honestly, my blood pressure will take weeks to get back to normal. There should be a warning label on the cover. :-)

I have been always fascinated by the Amish,as there is just something about them that draws me in with their books. This time,it was a whole new story for me with the Amish as it is not something that you hear about in the community,a single mother.

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET

My Thoughts On The Book: This is the second book in a series. It is a stand alone although it was comforting to have prior knowledge of the characters. This is not my first Amy Clipston book, it was not the best book I have read of hers, still it won’t be my last. Even though it was not the best it still kept me turning the page! I found myself drawn in to the characters lives. My heart broke for Carolyn with her secret and for Saul, the man sort of caught in the middle. Saul is looking for a wife to help rear his daughter and that is all. Carolyn is searching for love and doesn’t want a marriage based on convenience, but he is carrying the burden of a secret. This is a story about forgiveness and true love! If you like Amish stories you might want to try this one out.

A powerful story of acceptance, forgiveness and family. A story that so many can relate to. It had me praying for Carolyn and hoping that only the best will happen for her. She is so strong and yet so vulnerable.

  • “A MOTHER’S SECRET” | BOOK 2 IN THE HEARTS OF THE LANCASTER GRAND HOTEL SERIES | AMY CLIPSTON

    A Mother’s Secret is a absolute masterpiece.

Amy Clipston has taken a delicate, sensitive subject and put a face on it that I certainly never expected to see.

I have read books by other authors of Amish fiction about this same subject but most of them focus on the shame in their community or the hardship on the mother or the ostracism from family.

A Mother’s Secret takes a whole new approach and I LOVE IT!

  • HARD WORK AND INTEGRITY ARE LESSONS SHARED IN THIS BOOK

My first impression of Carolyn was that she acted very immature. She was quite defensive of her son, while expecting her family to continue to support her. In a way it seemed as though Carolyn never really grew up even though she was in her early thirties. As the story continued, I warmed up to her character a bit. There are some excellent moral lessons throughout A Mother’s Secret. Hard work and integrity were the two main points I took away. Carolyn’s situation might seem antiquated because she’s from an Amish background but there’s still relevance today. I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET

I appreciated this book more than most Amish fiction as it really dealt with some excellent questions such as forgiveness, redemption and forgiving ones self. I enjoyed watching the development of the characters, each coming into their own and making you enjoy the whole process. This was a very good, delightful read.

Eeeek! Another awesome book by Mrs. Amy Clipston!! Though, I think I liked “A Mother’s Secret” a bit better than “A Hopeful Heart” {I’ll post the review of that one someday…} but I cannot wait to read “A Dream of Hope” coming in November!

  • A MOTHER’S SECRET BY AMY CLIPSTON

I loved this story by Amy Clipston. Carolyn Lapp lives with her Amish family.

I look forward to reading more books by this author. The Amish came to life in this story and I loved the characters. It was a well-rounded story, getting to know Carolyn’s family and Joshua’s. I felt like I was living in this Amish community while reading this story.

  • SECRET TO LOVE

There were so many times in the book that I forgot that the people were Amish because they were going through so many things that are similar to “regular life.” All of the people were dealing with everyday life problems including looking for love like Carolyn. It was great to read the stories about how the horse farm worked and all of the issues that the characters went through in order to grow. The best part was the antagonist in the story who was Joshua’s mother. She was so negative and almost to an extreme with her strong opinions. All of the characters grew and changed through the story and I was glad to read about it. It really makes you believe in love!
