A Sister’s Wish (Avon Inspire, September 2016)

In Shelley Shepard Gray’s third book in her Charmed Amish Life series, a respectable young woman finds herself falling for an Amish man from the wrong side of the tracks.

Amelia Kinsinger is the perfect Amish woman—at least according to her neighbors. And while Amelia takes pride in her role as homemaker, she’s also harboring a secret: She’s been in love with bad boy Simon Hochstetler for as long as she can remember. Too bad he’s about as far from “perfect” as an Amish man could get… but that’s exactly why she’s so drawn to him.

Life hasn’t been kind to Simon. He ran away from an abusive home at fifteen and things went downhill from there. Eventually, Simon landed in prison. But the experience changed him. Now back in Charm as a grown man, he’s determined to make a new life for himself and not think too much about his wild past…unless it pertains to Amelia.

He’s loved Amelia for years. To him, she represents everything good and kind in the world. When he realizes that she returns his affections, he starts calling on her in secret, even though her older brother Lukas—who just happens to be Simon’s best friend—has made it perfectly clear that Amelia deserves better. Simon disagrees and believes he’s the only one who can truly make her happy.

But when Amelia gets hurt, it sets off a chain of events that forces them to consider their future together—and face their past mistakes. There’s a chance for love… but only if Simon dares to trust Amelia with the secrets of his past.

An Amish Family Christmas (Avon Inspire, October 2016)

In Shelley Shepard Gray’s fourth book in her Charmed Amish Life series, an unlikely Amish romance reveals that Christmas is a time for family, miracles—and love.

Ever since his father died in a tragic fire, Levi Kinsinger has felt adrift. Newly returned to Charm, Ohio, Levi is trying to fit into his old life, only to discover he seems to have outgrown it.

But when Julia, his young widowed neighbor, asks for his help with a Christmas project, Levi finds a sense of purpose for the first time in months. She and her daughter are new to Charm and could use a friend, a job Levi takes personally. Soon enough, friendship grows into attraction, but Levi can’t help having doubts. There’s something about Julia that doesn’t ring quite true…

Like Levi, Julia Kemps has survived her fair share of hardships—but only by hiding the truth of her past. Being an unmarried mother in an Amish community was unthinkable. Feeling hopeless, Julia did the only thing she could do: she moved to a new town and pretended to be a widow. But meeting Levi, she’s hopeful for the first time. Little by little, she begins to imagine telling him her darkest secret, and eventually…perhaps even sharing her life with him.

Christmas is a time for family, and as the holiday draws closer, Julia and Levi will have to face their pasts together…in order to find the healing, support and love they so desperately desire.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

This is the third book in the series called a Charmed Life Series by Shelley Shepard Gray. In this book Amelia Kinsinger is a woman with a secret who happens to be Amish. She has always loved Simon Hochstetler but he does not have a good reputation.

I loved the sprinkle of suspense dropped throughout this book, definitely a twist I was not expecting. I loved that this book, this series, shows the Amish as humans who struggle just as we all do. I loved the grittiness, the real life struggles, the compassion, the touches of humor, and the characters. They are down to earth, fun, realistic, and full of personality.

I loved Amelia’s character. She does not lose her spunkiness being Amish. If she were a non-fictional character, I imagine we would be good friends. I appreciated her loyalty, honesty, kindness, and sweetness.

Simon and Amelia were made for each other, they make such a good fit. I loved that the author made Joel a hero from another mold. He isn’t the typical hero you see in Amish books which made for a fun and delightful twist. Even though this book has hardship, pain, and loss, it was still soft with sweetness and a tenderness that was needed to balance the story. And the humor, too cute; really made me chuckle!

While I enjoyed both books, I especially enjoyed An Amish Family Christmas. Tis the season for everything Christmas, and cuddling up under a blanket with a cup of coffee and this book was just what the doctor ordered! The cover is so pretty and festive, and I loved how sweet the little community of Charm was, and how even though everyone had their own secrets and troubles, they were able to overcome their pasts and find happiness and forgiveness.

I have loved this series and love this family. I really enjoyed this book and taking a step into an Amish family Christmas. The sense of family that follows this group of young people around and their love and care for each other are real. Well to me at least! They are my friends and I love how this author weaves her stories with just the right amount of mystery and suspense. Her characters are real with real problems that they have to overcome. In overcoming their problems they grow and become even more lovable. Definitely recommend this book and the entire series.

Again, another awesome story from author Shelley Shepard Gray. I love the believable characters, and the way they develop and grow throughout the story, and throughout the series. I have to say, I really like Simon. His story is so sad, having to leave home at such an early age and make some kind of life for himself. And sad as it is, someone with nothing usually make the incorrect choices, just as Simon did. I could understand Amelia’s family being protective of her, but they really went a bit too far with it.

This particular books follow her series “Charmed Amish Life” about the city of Charm, Ohio. If you have read any of the other books in this series, the characters will be very familiar to you. Levi Kinsinger recently returned to Charm, Ohio after trying to find himself when his beloved father perished in a tragic factory fire. [A Sister’s Wish] I liked that Simon was not the typical Amish hero, but more of a ‘bad boy’ who has been redeemed. Amelia was a unique character that I got to like quite a bit. Sometimes the family was great and sometimes they annoyed me but overall that was a lot like a normal family!

[An Amish Family Christmas] In An Amish Family Christmas, the focus of the family/story is Levi. He is having trouble dealing with his parents’ death and not being present in his life. Julia is new and there is an attraction between the two. Secrets may keep them apart but it is after all, Christmas time so a time for miracles!

Amelia is trying to keep the home fires burning after the loss of both her parents while her siblings run the family business. She never notices that her siblings treat her as a little child until an accident draws the attention to the fact that she has been seeing an Amish bad boy with a past. Her siblings just don’t believe Simon is good enough for her. She is determined to set them all straight.

I think sometimes we in the outside world view the Amish as almost perfect in some ways and it is true that everyone has their issues, maybe not to Simon’s degree but it is definitely possible. Simon dotes on Amelia and I love it. It was interesting to see him interact with his siblings, who have both left the Amish world, and it was also nice to see Amelia come into her own and stand up for herself. She seems to be treated almost as Cinderella was by her step mother and sisters, expected to do everything, but treated not so well. Her family didn’t treat her badly necessarily, but definitely like a child that she is not and they do not appreciate her as they should.

This was a good Amish Christmas romance book. It is book four in the Charmed Amish Life series featuring the Kinsinger family. I recommend reading them in order since the characters are mostly the same and you learn more about them each book. The main focus of this story is Levi Kinsinger and Julia. The plot was different and interesting. Levi is the odd one out in the family now. So he decided to rent a house instead of living with the family. His neighbor is Julia and her young daughter. He is intrigued by her. He likes her daughter too. She is hiding some secrets though. I thought the author did a good job developing the plot and characters. It is a good conclusion to the whole series. Recommended.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

(A Sister’s Wish) – Similar to her other works, Shelley Shepard Gray uses a fast-paced narrative with short chapters to keep the readers interested in the story. However, I didn’t get really interested into the novel until around chapter 5 or 6; then I just flew through the pages. Overall, A Sister’s Wish is a nicely written third installment of the Amish series.

(An Amish Family Christmas) – At under 300 pages, this a fast-paced little read, and from my understanding it is the final installment of the series. While the story is well-written, I thought the plot was slightly cliched, reminding me a bit too much of those made-for-Hallmark holiday movies, but less cheesy.

Overall, I liked reading An Amish Family Christmas. I was hooked into the story right from the get-go and I finished reading the entire book in one afternoon.

Both books were good and not entirely too long. The perfect book to take a bath with. The books each dealt with new love, but more than that, overcoming obstacles in a person’s past. The books are set in an Amish town, but that almost seems like a background plot. It’s discussed, but the details aren’t always given in great detail, so it doesn’t take away from the story. If you enjoy lighter reads like this, I highly recommend both books. I actually liked A Sister’s Wish a little bit more, but both were good.

I did read the first two books in the series first, A Son’s Vow and A Daughter’s Dream. Although I think you might be able to read the books on their own, I definitely think you would get the most out of them if you read all four in the series as there is so much history to all of the characters.

A Sister’s Wish – There is so much more to this story than Amelia Kinsinger and her love interest, Simon Hochstetler. I read an interview with Shelley that said this series is “full of drama” and that is the truth. There is much pain revealed from parental abuse, mistrust, and grief. But there is also acceptance, forgiveness, and redemption. 4/5

An Amish Family Christmas – Shelley says she writes so her characters have the same kind of”uplifting experiences through their faith” as she does. An Amish Family Christmas has characters whose faith is what truly lifts them up and brings them out of the pain of abuse and loss.

  • ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

Shelley Shepard Gray couldn’t have written a better ending for the Charmed Amish Life series if she tried.  It’s the perfect blend of resolution and sweet love, while staying true to the tone of the other books.  Gray’s written a fantastic, realistic series about Amish people dealing with difficult personal issues – it’s unlike any other I’ve read.  I appreciate that perspective and have enjoyed reading all four, but this final one might be my favorite.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

Shelley Shepard Gray doesn’t shy away from difficult issues. One of her character’s, Tess, finally gets The Refuge up and running, a place for people to get help. Drawing from her own experience as a runaway, she creates an inviting place where support groups can meet, and people can find resources.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

Both of these books are well written.  The dialogue is believable, the plot moves at a good pace, not rushed through, but also doesn’t ever drag on.  My favorite part of these novels is the characters.  With the exception of the villains of the story, all of the people in this book are good, but flawed human beings.  I like books with relatable characters that are likeable, but not perfect.  Shelly Shepard Gray did an excellent job of writing “real” people.

Shelley Shepard Gray’s ability to weave a story that is both interesting and relevant to a wide audience of Amish fiction fans, romance fans, and Christian fiction readers alike is unsurpassed. This series has been a good one and I’m sad that it has reached its conclusion. I’m sure the next series, The Amish of Hart County will be worth a look, too!

Return to Charm and catch up with the Kinsinger family. See small town community life and experience the love extended as they live out the command to take care of the widows and orphans.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

[A Sister’s Wish] Once again I found myself visiting Charm, Ohio and renewing my acquaintance with its residents, especially the members of the Kinsinger family. Brother Lukas and sister Rebecca are happily married and stay busy at the family mill while younger sister Amelia stays home and takes care of the farm and household chores by herself which makes her feel somewhat abandoned. Amelia has loved Simon Hochstetler since she was a child and they have met secretly since he returned to Charm because they know Lukas in particular would not approve of their relationship. An accident brings everything out into the open and things get pretty tense.

[An Amish Family Christmas] An Amish Family Christmas is another warm yet realistic story from Shelley Shepard Gray. Although not quite as much a Christmas tale as some, it still exudes the spirit of Christmas in its illustration of how one person can be blessed by helping others. I thought this was a fitting conclusion for the Charmed Amish Life series and also recommend it.

I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t a bigger holiday theme since it is titled a Christmas story, but that is ok. The last two books were not my favorite of the series, I enjoyed the first two book more. 4 stars from this reviewer.

A super quick read with this short book, more novella length than novel length. It is funny, some of the characters I didn’t care for too much redeemed themselves in this book, and the ones I didn’t like in this book redeemed themselves in the Christmas book.

It was great to see into Levi’s thoughts and understand his actions that he took in previous books. I also really enjoyed watching him fall for Julia and her daughter. He was definitely a kind and caring man. The issues that he had to face and the decisions he needed to make in this novel really threw him for a loop for awhile. He grew a lot in this story.

[A Sister’s Wish] This was my favorite of the stories so far. This story seemed to touch the very soul of the Amish family beautifully though many different emotions.

[An Amish Family Christmas] It was a wonderful ending piece that drew the reader in from the start. I could not put it down. The characters came to life on the page and mix that with some family Christmas festivities you have a winner.

I am sad that this is the last book in the Charmed Life Series because I truly enjoyed reading about each character. That moment when Levi realizes that he was putting his pain above Julia made me ponder a bit about some of the times that I have behaved as if am the only one who is suffering.

These two books were my favorite in the series so far because there were so many twists and turns but things were resolved from the first two books and we got to enjoy the wonderful new characters that we met along the way. I loved watching the relationship with Simon and Amelia and Levi and Julia develop and meet lots of other new friends through the book. I hope that you check out all the books in this great series soon!!! My only complaint was that they were too short and I would have kept reading so hoping for more books with these great characters.

[A Sister’s Wish]: This is a great book on the power of forgiveness and love. I really enjoyed seeing Amelia, finally put her foot down with her brothers and sisters to take a stand for what she wanted for once. Her love and acceptance of Simon, no matter his past, was heartwarming and it was just the medicine Simon needed to finally except that no matter a person’s past we are all worth of love and forgiveness.

[An Amish Family Christmas]: A great story of over coming tough pasts, new love and remembering that Christmas is about celebrating family and friends. This book was defiantly addition to the series and I think it will be a series I reread in

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

[A Sister’s Wish] A Sister’s Wish is a very sweet love story between two young people who have had eyes for each other since childhood. This is a story about growing up, forgiveness, and finding that a family is simply being with the people who love and understand you.

[An Amish Family Christmas] An Amish Family Christmas breaks open the perception that all Amish have perfectly godly lives. It shows that they are ordinary people who are just as capable of making mistakes as the rest of society. I loved Julia’s determination to create a new reality. She took responsibility for her actions and moved forward.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

[A Sister’s Wish] A Sister’s Wish was a fun and sweetly romantic story. . . . There were plenty of cameos from the rest of the Kinsinger clan from the prior two books, enriching the story with all the teasing and love of family. The story had an interwoven theme of redemption and of those who have been lost being found. This was an enjoyable story for Christian and Amish Romance readers alike.

[An Amish Family ChristmasAn Amish Family Christmas was a heartfelt story about a mother and her care for her daughter as she tries to protect her from her past and the man who falls in love with them. The story was full of family, friendships, and small-town charm. It was also heartbreaking in parts, while being sweet in others. An enjoyable read for Christian and Amish Romances fans.

[An Amish Family Christmas] How do you finish a series up that have kept readers enthralled with the characters? The answer is you take an extremely gifted author that draws you into the final story with suspense, a town that makes you feel at home and characters that make you feel like family. The author really shines with this emotional page turner that tucks at your heartstrings.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

[A Sister’s Wish] A Sister’s Wish showed us what love can do. It can heal the soul and heart from the love of our Lord God. From page one, I’m rooting for Simon and Amelia. From page one, I want to keep turning the pages. From page one, Shelley had me, and that goes for each and every one of The Charmed Amish Life series.

[An Amish Family Christmas] An Amish Family Christmas explores how grief can be internal and it takes you away from those you love. Yet with God and the love of family, it brings it back to His love. Christmas is a time for family, and The Charmed Amish Life is just that.

  • ‘A SISTER’S WISH’ AND ‘AN AMISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS’ BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

[A Sister’s Wish] There is a lot of deep issues going on in this novel, one of them being that if you are forgiven are you really a new creation, or does your sins forever taint you, maybe not with God, but with others? There are also issues of abuse and when should a community step in? I liked seeing Amelia growing sure of whom she is by getting a backbone and standing up to her siblings and even Simon instead of continuing being a doormat.

[An Amish Family Christmas] Levi becomes interested in the pretty young woman who he is not aware is not at all who she says she is. This novel deals with abuse at the hands of a loved one and Julia is hiding from the father of her child. There is a sense of foreboding danger as Julia’s former beau, a very controlling man, has not given up on finding her.

[An Amish Family Christmas] I think out of all four of the books in the series this one was my favorite. All of the siblings found their life-match and despite the difficulties they had to endure, they were able to overcome them with the help of friends, family, and their faith in God.

I would definitely consider this to be a family saga series. There is a focus on how siblings relate to and affect each other, in positive and negative ways.I loved the message of redemption, repentance, and forgiveness. Each character, including Simon, had to work through accepting his past and moving beyond it to the man he is now- which was easier for Amelia than her brother and sister.
