  • BOOK REVIEW: A HEARTBEAT AWAY BY S. DIONNE MOORE

Set in the Civil War, this was one of the more enjoyable Christian fiction novels I’ve read lately. Not only did I enjoy the historical theme, but it was not a “preachy” novel, which sometimes distracts from the story. The characters of Beth and Joe are both sympathetic, causing the reader to continue reading to find out what happens to them. I will admit to finding Jim and Emma to be somewhat stereotyped, which bothered me, but I am sure this was not the author’s intention.

Great historical fiction with soft Christian theme.

  • A HEARTBEAT AWAY

As we walk the road of healing, both physical and emotional, with Joe and Beth we see the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord. The depth of the details that S. Dionne Moore has put into her story is exceptional. The history comes alive through her attention to the facts and her careful working of the past.

  • QUILTS OF LOVE SERIES

Two of my favorite things, historical fiction and quilts! This makes a beautiful combination in the story A Heartbeat Away. Beth has much growing to do to overcome her insecurities and sense of worthlessness. God desires for us to see the heart, and this book does a great job at focusing on that! A beautiful love story with God as the center.

  • A DEEPER LOOK INTO FINDING HOPE IN THE DARKEST OF TIMES!

This novel gives the readers an inside look at what life in the South really looked like in the midst of the Battle of Antietam and just how brutal it was from both sides of the war. It is hard to imagine men in our own country turning against each other but that is just one of the effects of a Civil War. The message in this novel is one about hope and finding it in one of the darkest times in our life. It’s always there one just has to keep pursuing it in order to find it. Even though they are part of a series, since each novel deals with something different you can pick up any of them as they are stand alones in a greater series. I rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars!

  • It’s a new-to-me series from a new-to-me author and I really enjoyed it. It’s deeper than most of the other historical fiction I’ve read lately. The characters were likable and the Civil War setting was poignant. Faith was a beautiful part of this story, in spite of the tragedies and struggles of war.

  • THE DARKNESS WILL FADE

I enjoyed the themes running throughout this book. Themes of forgiveness, hope, despair, trust, and faith all combined make this a thoughtful read. It wasn’t an impassioned plea to take sides in regards to the Civil War, but two very personal journeys from the protagonist’s points of view.

  • I especially loved the running ideas surrounding the quilt. Sewing was something the Beth didn’t particularly want to do, but this quilt was a gift from her mother. Through this quilt though, Beth and Joe were able to find some insight and peace in terrible times. The quilt became more than just a quilt. It became a symbol of things as they could be.

  • GOOD STORY LINE

This is the first Quilts of Love book I have read. I love any book that has to do with the Civil War and this book takes you right into the heart of the battle. There is a sweet love story that grows while Beth sews together quilting blocks while the battle rages outside. Good story line, just too fast of a plot.

  • A HEARTBEAT AWAY

While I am not a fan of war stories, historical or modern day, I am a fan of quilt stories. I love this Quilts of Love Series, and have read most of this series. So while I am not a fan of battle scenes, I have to say this author was a great story teller and shared the battle scenes very well. Beth worked on this quilt all during the story, as she worked caring for the injured soldiers. A love story between two unlikely people. Beth and Joe the soldier for the other side. So while I did not connect in a deep way to this story because of the war story, I did enjoy it. A book that you will enjoy and can read quickly since it is not a large book. 4 stars

  • A HEARTBEAT AWAY: A LITFUSE REVIEW

My mother is a quilter and I was intrigued by the idea of quilting and storytelling.

The Civil War has always been an interest in mine—it was a very sad time in our history where brother fought against brother. I can’t imagine how heartbreaking this was for the families involved.

The fascinating thing to me is that there are documented stories of “enemies” that fought in the Civil War becoming close friends. How could two people that fought one another ever become friends? This book really focused on the power of forgiveness and shows how our lives can change when we soften our hearts towards our fellow man. I would be interested in reading more by this author!

The inconceivable atrocities of war and its conditions were sympathetically dealt with rather than turning it into a gory account. Seeing the heartbreak of the ladies nursing as well as the soldier’s despair brought the realities of war into perspective.

This is a story of healing wounds, physically, emotionally and spiritually, as well as hope and love. There are also elements of forgiveness, self-sacrifice and courage. • A HEARTBEAT AWAY BY S. DIONNE MOORE A BOOK REVIEW

It is very hard in today’s day to understand what people had to go through to survive, many years ago. There were no phones, tv, or easy ways to communicate. When someone left their home it was almost understood that you would never see them again. The author has written a story of love and faith, even though some may disagree with each other.

  • A GRAPHIC REMINDER OF GOD’S LOVE

It seemed to me that Moore took the intellectual knowledge gained in a history class away from freedom for the slaves and state’s rights, to the reality of men dying, sustaining injuries that will forever alter their lives, and families whose homes were completely demolished. The author also brings the reader right into the protagonist’s heads. The reader gains insider information by knowing the thoughts and even the dreams of the predominant characters.

I would not recommend A Heartbeat Away for a reader who wants to be entertained by something light and amusing. However, I do recommend this book, for it’s historical significance, and the vivid detailed retelling of an important story of our nation. It is also the beautiful telling of God working through a quilt.

“A Heartbeat Away,” written by S. Dionne Moore, is a Quilts of Love story and it is a beautiful, sweet love story set during the Civil War. • A HEARTBEAT AWAY BY S. DIONNE MOORE

    S. Dionne Moore definitely captured the emotions and passion of war in A Heartbeat Away. She doesn’t candy coat the brutality and desperation felt by those caught in the midst of battle. The words are often raw and occasionally difficult to read, yet the author is true to her characters and storyline. Runaway slaves, families desperately fleeing the enemy, badly wounded soldiers (often covered with lice) and gun shots during the day and night all paint a tragic but realistic portrait of the Civil War. The two shining stars are Beth and her grandmother, Gerta, who do everything in their power to help the wounded and the hungry. Throughout the pages of this book there are bright moments captured through memories shared and the comfort of kind words and actions.

  • GREAT FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN CIVIL WAR FIGURES

In the first few chapters the plot was slow as molasses to unfold and just didn’t hold my attention. If I were more of a Civil War buff I might have enjoyed it more. In the later portions of the book the major themes of love, healing, and faith came through the pages. Those were worth waiting for.

  • CHAOS, DESTRUCTION, LOVE AND FAITH – COMBINATION FOR A REALLY FOOD STORY

Outside of being a romance the story looks at war from the perspective of a soldier and of a civilian. It’s kind of interesting to see how even though they’re on different sides they still have some of the same reactions to the chaos and destruction going on around them. Beth and Joe have to get through their own personal demons before they can begin to realize what’s going on in their hearts. I liked watching the progression and changes they went through as they spend more time together.

  • A BEAUTIFUL BOOK!

This book grabbed my attention from page one and it hasn’t let go yet. I loved the characters in this book, the attention to detail, and the historical accuracy.

I could really relate to Beth, who lives daily with pain, and has a limp. I could really understand her struggles with self-image and trying so hard to do what she feels the Lord calling her to do, yet have difficulty because of the pain.

As a quilter, I also loved “watching” Beth work on her quilt. I found this to be such a sweet part of the story, also. I really loved this book all the way around and highly recommend it!

  • “A HEARTBEAT AWAY” BY S. DIONNE MOORE

A Heartbeat Away is an intense look at the emotions of the Civil War from an angle rarely considered: those caught up in the blood of battle as civilians who want to help the wounded. Never have I read a fictional account that dwelt on the hope that comes from the ashes of war like this one does. The semi-graphic accounts will make your heart dip into your stomach just as your fingers grasp the straws of hope that Joe points out to Beth.

Beth learns amazing spiritual truths from her grandmother as she’s faced with the carnage of war and witnesses violence all around her. Several of these lessons cut deep and are readily applicable to us, too, as we live and learn to trust and forgive just as Beth does.

I love stories that take place during the civil war, and this one drew me in from the beginning! The characters were wonderful. I loved Beth, while she had issues with self image, she didn’t feel attractive because of a limp. Quilt pieces from her mother add another layer to this story. As Beth pieces together the quilt she finds herself letting go of hurts and finding hope.Beth learns that it doesn’t matter which side you are on, union or confederate, if a soldier is wounded you help him.

  • BOOK BLOG TOUR STOP AND REVIEW – A HEARTBEAT AWAY BY S. DIONNE MOORE

“A Heartbeat Away” is a part of the “Quilts of Love” series, a series that features a romantic and inspirational story that revolves around a quilt.

With this story, the pattern featured is the antique Goose Chase, and it is so appropriate to the tale. As Beth and Joe struggle to come to terms with their fledgling relationship in the midst of the raging Civil War, she a Northern sympathizer and he a Rebel soldier, their hearts and minds are in a “chase” around to finding the true love they are meant to experience.

Author S. Dionne Moore manages to capture the background of the Civil War, complete with the horror of the Battle of Antietam – the worst single day battle of the war – while also creating a loving story of hope, faith and trust.

    I highly recommend this novel!

Dionne’s characters come alive with the sights and sounds of the turmoil without and within. Beth sees herself with her injury, sustained while attempting rescue of another, as unsuitable to be loved and cherished. I see her with endurance and the will to do right, bringing peace and hope among the chaos of these dark days. Joe struggles to regain his strength and fight the fever raging within his body. He projects encouragement and forthrightness in who he is. They are not alone and are uplifted by those who care about them, without whom it is unlikely they would have survived.
