All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes || (Zondervan, September 2014)

Kat inspected rows of the same old cupcakes. They seemed to blink back at her, as if they knew she was capable of so much more.

Kat Varland has had enough of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

At twenty-six years old, Kat is still living in the shadows of her family in Bayou Bend, Louisiana. Still working shifts at her Aunt Maggie’s bakery. Still wondering what to do with her passion for baking and her business degree. And still single.

But when Lucas Brannen, Kat’s best friend, signs her up for a reality TV bake-off on Cupcake Combat, everything Kat ever wanted is suddenly dangled in front of her: creative license as a baker, recognition as a visionary . . . and a job at a famous bakery in New York.

As the competition heats up, Lucas realizes he might have made a huge mistake. As much as he wants the best for Kat, the only thing he wants for himself—her—is suddenly in danger of slipping away.

The bright lights of reality cooking wars and the chance at a successful career dazzle Kat’s senses and Lucas is faced with a difficult choice: help his friend achieve her dreams . . . or sabotage her chances to keep her in Louisiana.

  • LITFUSE PRESENTS ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES BY BETSY ST. AMANT

This was a fun book to read. Lucas and Kate are crazy about each other, but they didn’t really know how the other felt. Sometimes the way they acted got kind of annoying because, well I just thought a better attitude for each of them would have been a little more pleasant to read. I really enjoyed the TV Cupcake competition, and that is what makes the book worth reading, for me anyway.

  • MY THOUGHTS AND VIEWS OF THIS BOOK

This was an enjoyable chick-lit read. I really enjoyed the story of Lucas and Kat. It was both predictable and unpredictable. I think it was neat how Betsy took you behind the scenes of a “reality” cooking show instead of watching it.

  • Admit it. You can’t even get past the cover without thinking how much you want to read this book!

Don’t worry, I feel the same way. It’s really as adorable as it looks!

In this story, Kat seems to have all that yet lacks a sense of confidence. Lucas rallied in Kat’s corner and was a true stronghold for her. I really enjoyed the dialogue between the two of them as they sifted through their feelings like so much cake flour. Yes, it’s sugary sweet and all kinds of messy. Who doesn’t love a good cupcake?!

  • A FUN HOMETOWN ROMANCE TO FALL IN LOVE WITH!

I have never read a book by Betsy St. Amant and, after reading All is a Fair in LOVE and Cupcakes, I feel I have been missing out. Her talent for writing pours out each time you turn a page because she weaves the perfect story like only a handful of other authors I am crazy about. She is definitely on my list of “Must Read” authors and I am looking forward to her next book! If you love contemporary romance with a little “zing”, you’ll love All is Fair in LOVE and Cupcakes! It’s a five star PLUS read for me and I recommend it very highly!

  • LOVING ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES

    I. Absolutely. FELL IN LOVE. with this book. And it wasn’t because of the cupcakes (well… maybe a little because of the cupcakes). Mostly… it was the total innocent, falling in love, story. Kat and Lucas are perfection. Their friendship is one that everyone should have. Their internal struggle through the book with keeping their friendship safe or risking it to express that they each want more had me right there with them. And… right up until the end of the book you’re really not sure whether Kat and Lucus are going to end up truly together, still just best friends, or separated by miles.

  • BOOK REVIEW: ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES

I’m a sucker for the best friends/will they become more plot. It’s impossible not to root for Lucas and Kat. The odds are against them as they work together in a cupcake competition in NYC. Kat has issues, so does Lucas. He has reason to go back to Louisiana, she has reasons for wanting to win and stay in the Big Apple.

But as the competition continues, cooking isn’t the only thing in the kitchen, there is chemistry. I loved reading Kat’s story and adored Lucas.

This is a sweet romance that left me satisfied. I hope you put All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes on your reading list.

I loved this book. It was an end of the summer read for me and it made me happy. The book was a quick read and to be honest I did not want to put it down until I knew how it ended. There were several possible endings that could have occurred because the two main characters were just not talking to each other. If you want a fun story to read then this is the book for you. I hope I get another chance to read and review a Betsy St. Amant book.

  • ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES BY BETSY ST. AMANT

I cheered for Kat from the first page. She’s delightfully insecure (I love rooting for the underdog) and feels overlooked by everyone but her hopelessly devoted best friend, Lucas Brannen. Kat has no idea that Lucas adores her and that’s where the magic lies. This couple is adorably clueless and reading their innermost thoughts is delightful! Betsy St. Amant knows exactly how men and women think and holds nothing back- she’s spot on and it’s first rate entertainment!

The reality show was cleverly concocted as were the interesting cast of competitors. Each an intriguing slice of life that kept this reader guessing. The bonus recipe for Kat’s Raspberry Lemonade Torte Cupcakes was the cherry on top!

Written by Morning Glories and Moonflowers on September 19, 2014 | e

  • This book was fun to read. I kept finding myself imagining that I was Kat – baking cupcakes, hiding her feelings for Lucas, trying to win the approval of her family. It kept my interest from beginning to end, because I was anxious to see if Kat won the contest and the man. I liked how the story was told from both viewpoints – Kat’s and Lucas’s. It allowed me to watch them both battle their feelings for each other. It made the story a little more 3D. As I mentioned above, I recommend All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes if you are a fan of chick-lit.

  • A CUTE STORY!

I love reading and I love cupcakes…heck, I have a cake cooling right now as I type this post, so reading this book was a given for me!

This was a cute story. It was full of yummy cupcakes, a reality baking show, and a sweet romance that centered around a young 20-something, Kat Varland, who is ready to get past the world of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. She is a girl ready to dive into a world of Raspberry Lemonade Torte….My mouth is salivating right now. I’ve never been so happy to see a recipe in a book! Back on track…Sadly, as much as Kat is ready to help her aunt’s bake shop go past the usual, she is stuck by what her aunt wants for her bake shop and the lack of support from her family.

  • ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES BY BETSY ST. AMANT

After reading a novella by this author I was excited for the chance to read one of her novels. Thankfully her writing continued to be great and this was a very sweet story.
Kat and Lucas were both great characters. And even though I occasionally wanted to smack them and make them aware of their feelings for each other I totally understood them not wanting to risk so many years of friendship. I thought is was so cute how they always seemed to know what the other was thinking, feeling, or needing.
The cupcake contest was a fun background for the story and it was fun to hear all the different cupcakes they created. Though I will warn you that you will crave cupcakes!
All in all this was a great read that I recommend if you enjoy a light, entertaining read!

If you’re looking for a charming, easy Fall read, that’s perfect for reading curled up on a dreary day, this is the book! It is a modern romance, with a sweet Southern twist! You may find yourself craving a cupcake or two, early on in the book, and that craving might get worse as the book gets tot the end! Real life never has snappy comebacks and complete understanding, so in many ways the book is very realistic of friends who don’t communicate fully, and have issues because of that. This is a Christian romance story, so it is very Pg-13, and how Kat and Lucas end up together is interesting to see. It is a quick and light read, that will leave you happy at the ending!

Between the combination of sugary cupcake sweetness and kisses that would make any girl swoon, this novel did nothing short of entertain and delight me from beginning to end. Sassy humor with a spunky story line, I cheered for Kat and wanted her to see her dream come true—and yet realize that love was directly in front of her…if she would only open up her eyes and her mouth to communicate it! Much can be said for the romantic tension, but I’ll leave it at that for now.

  • WONDERFUL BEST FRIEND ROMANCE

I love the competition shows on The Food Network. So when I realized the majority of this novel would take place behind the scenes of Cupcake Combat (similar to Food Network’s Cupcake Wars), well, I was all in.

The cupcake show does make a fantastic backdrop for All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes, but the characters are what truly makes it special. Lucas and Kat are both realistically flawed characters, and their stutter steps into a relationship, while a bit maddening, are totally understandable. I loved watching their relationship evolve, and the ending made me want to cheer.

  • WEEKLY BOOK REVIEW

All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes had such an appeal to read! I really needed something fun loving and light before the dreaded snow starts to fall here in Western New York. Kat is living in Bayou Bend, Louisiana and is sick of flavors! She is a single 26 year old working at her Aunt Maggie’s bakery. Trying to live her passion for baking and hopefully use her business degree in the future. Her best friend, Lucas get her hooked up with a reality TV bake-off on Cupcake Combat and her future is right in front of her eyes. She may just get the Bakery in NYC like she has always dreamed. Lucas gets second thoughts and maybe he doesn’t want her to become successful.
It is a great book for beginner’s or anyone really to pick up and smile about!

I don’t watch television and so while I think there is a show called Cupcake Wars, I don’t know how it compares to the fictional Cupcake Combat. The scenes during the filming were entertaining. • A DELICIOUS LOVE STORY

“All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes” by Betsy St. Amant is truly a sweet read. The author shows a real understanding of the ebb and flow of insecurities many of us face as her protagonists step forward to meet the challenge of competing in a national baking competition. These fleshy characters are very lifelike, especially when it comes to making a decision that appears right at the time, but later considering all of the consequences and maybe feeling a little less sure of themselves.

  • A SWEET YUMMY READ!!!

This is a deliciously wonderful, not-to-be-missed novel!!!
Who knew you could enjoy the decadent thrill of sweets without any of the calories? Beware: this book can cause sugar cravings:) I’m a fan of all of those Food Channel competition shows and am so thrilled that Betsy used this as her setting for the story! I love Kat. She’s apprehensive about breaking out of her shell and taking a risk- aren’t we all? Lucas is a wonderful example of self-sacrificing love. They both have stuff to work through, in their relationships with others and together.
When Lucas is face with a decision that could ruin everything for Kat…what will he choose? I just loved cheering these two on as the story progressed!
Most of all, this story was an amazing reminder that God knows us. He knows our dreams and He cultivates in us the gifts and abilities to fulfill His purpose in and through us!

While I enjoyed the story and the characters, I did feel it took a long time to get anywhere, and both Kat and Lucas engaged in a lot of introspection. This was exacerbated by the fact we could tell they were interested in each other from the get-go. If one had been interested and the other took a while to return the feeling, it wouldn’t have seemed so drawn-out. However, it was still an enjoyable romance with a food backdrop (always good), and I’ll be interested in reading more from Betsy St Amant.

  • ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES (BOOK REVIEW)

All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes is an absolutely delightful clean, romantic treat. The characters are believable, likeable, and struggle with issues familiar to the heart of most of us. This is the perfect novel to read when you want to relax and reflect on the many blessings love and friendship can bring.

  • A SWEET READ

I don’t want to give away any of the story, but this is a “sweet” (pun intended) story. It was engaging, and I enjoyed the reality-tv part of it, as it actually felt life-like. I honestly was expecting just a light, feel-good story, but it was more than that. Themes that stood out to me included bravely embracing difficult change, loving,…

  • ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a huge fan of books where best friends fall in love (probably because my husband and I started off as friends before falling in love) so I was very excited to receive this book and it certainly did not disappoint! This was the first book by Betsy St. Amant that I have read and I totally fell in love with her style of writing! I found it very engaging and the characters were realistic and very likable, quirks and all!

  • REVIEW – ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES

The Cupcake Combat reminds of the TLC reality competition called the Next Great Baker, which I just watched the newest season over the summer. Though I do read quite a bit of romance books, this is one of the first that I have read that has a best-friend romance. The plot in this book plays out like a Hallmark TV movie, which isn’t a bad thing, as some of their movies are good. Overall, All’s Fair In Love and Cupcakes is a fast-paced romantic tale with a modern twist, which doesn’t play by the typical romantic genre rules. I thoroughly enjoy reading every page.

  • COOKING UP A SWEET ROMANCE

Overall, “All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes” was a fun and entertaining contemporary romance that was a pleasant diversion. I liked the idea of two long-time best friends coming to realize that their feelings for each other had changed. As far as their characterization went, I really liked both Kat and Lucas. Sometimes Kat’s frustration with her job and her desire to open her own bakery in another town blinded her to the very real possibilities right in front of her. Lucas was the perfect hero, sweet and supportive and willing to do almost anything for Kat – even wear an apron and cook on TV. I enjoyed reading about the cupcake competition and it seemed very realistic as far as what I have actually seen on similar programs. The vivid descriptions of Kat’s recipes made my mouth water and I appreciated the recipe that was included at the end of the book.

  • ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES #BOOKREVIEW @LITFUSE

This was yet another author that I had not read. Another new face and blank slate. I have fallen in love. So now instead of a blank slate is a slate full of hearts and cupcakes! But not just any cupcakes. She gets special ones like raspberry lemonade and football goals. This was a wonderful book about the power of friendship and sacrifice. Should we sacrifice our dreams for those we love or expect others to conform to what we think they should be. In the end, what is most important? Being with who you love or having what you want? For me I enjoyed the characters and the way the book read. And the poor old aunt of Kat’s that loves chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Hope she ends up okay! All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes is definitely a great read that I wholeheartedly recommend.

The book’s author, Betsy St. Amant, is a woman I’ve heard a lot about from other authors of her genre, and her writing is just as fun and witty and romantic as the hype. All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes is a sweet (ha ha!) story of two friends, Kat Varland and Lucas Brennan, who have so much more between them than friendship but who are afraid to risk losing what they have for finding something more.

  • ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES

What a delightfully fun novel! I know this is geared for the YA crowd, of which I haven’t been a part for a few years, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Betsy St. Amant has created a tale as delectable as the cupcakes that Kat creates and fortunately, consuming this story is calorie-free! Both Kat and Lucas are endearing characters. Their relationship and Kat’s longing to do more than at her aunt’s basic bakery provide the basis for a great story, and St. Amant takes it to the next level by adding the high stakes of a reality cooking show contest, complete with its own on- and off-camera drama.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and was satisfied with the ending. Betsy St. Amant did a great job of not forcing the story but letting the plot develop naturally. I especially liked that she gave us both main characters’ point of view. Often in stories like this one we don’t get the male’s perspective, so that set this book apart. All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes is for fans of Cupcake Wars and Contemporary Christian Romance. Read it with a cupcake in hand on a relaxed day!

  • REVIEW! KINDLE GIVEAWAY! FACEBOOK PARTY! ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND CUPCAKES BY BETSY ST. AMANT

I love stories where best friends fall in love! It’s fascinating to see how a relationship makes the shift from friends to more-than-friends. There is plenty of angst from both of the main characters as neither realize that the other feels ready to move forward… which sometimes became repetitive when they would continue to hold each other at arms length and fail to communicate. I don’t enjoy watching reality shows, but that aspect of the plot was well-written and kept things exciting. The personalities of Kat and Lucas were both likeable so it was fun to follow their drama and see how things would end up.

I always enjoy a good romance between to best friends who don’t realize the other feels the exact same way, but these two almost drove me to the point of insanity. It took forever for them to figure it out, these two who are supposed to be such good friends they tell each other everything, how could they not see how the other felt sooner? Not only that, each of their efforts just has the opposite effect on how the other *thinks* they feel about them. I just wanted to smack the both upside the head! It took way longer than it should have for them to figure out their feelings. I did enjoy the reality show competition and the tension created by judge Thad. I liked reading about how it might be to be on a cooking competition & I love those kind of shows so it was a lot of fun for me to read.

  • SWEET READ

I enjoy reading about friends who end up falling in love because that is what happened to me. This book has a cute idea with cupcakes, a contest, and a nice guy. That being said this book didn’t draw me in at all. Lucas and Kat are funny together at times, but this story has been written many times before. I could have guessed the entire story line by reading the back cover. There are no surprises and it does end like you think it will. The contest part is interesting but the relationship part seemed to drag out and was a bit irritating to read. This isn’t a bad book, I just wanted something deeper.

This is a book for those who enjoy really getting in the mind of the characters as much of the book consists of the inner thoughts of the characters. Both of the them loved the other but were to afraid to say so, fearing it would ruin their good friendship. One does get an idea of how TV shows are taped and there is a good message to the story, that we should submit our dreams to God.

Ok, so sure, as a food blogger I was drawn to the title. But, who wouldn’t be? Look at how cute that cover is. All’s Fair in Love and Cupcakes by Betsy St. Amant was a pure joy to read. First, I have to say that this is listed as a Fiction/ Christain Romance. But it was written in such a great way that it’s perfect for everyone to read whether you are a believer or not. There really isn’t a lot of a religious aspect to it. Just that the main character, Kat Varland is a believer and has been questioning what life has to offer her.

  • SWEET AND LIGHT HEARTED CHICK-LIT

Warning: this sweet romance will give you a serious hankering for a cupcake with all its glorious descriptions of gourmet delicacies. Thankfully there are recipes of the most enticing cupcakes appended to the end. The cupcake competition/reality show is clearly inspired by “Cupcake Wars” and acts as a familiar backdrop for Kat and Lucas’ romance. They established a predictable pattern of one step forward to three steps back on the next page as continual misunderstanding and poor communication fray at their friendship. The themes and message are impacting and resonate with anyone who has struggled with finding their path or has dreams that are at odds with their present situation. The premise of this fun and light-hearted read is cute, but it just fell short of a win for me.
