When the prodigal is ready to return

Ruth Logan Herne reminds readers despite life’s challenges, they can always go back home

3/7/2016 || Seattle: Family relationships are never easy, and loss, grief and greed can compound normal everyday tensions. Ruth Logan Herne offers hope for hurting families with the messages contained in her new book, Back in the Saddle (Multnomah Books / March 15, 2016 / ISBN: 978-1601427762 / $9.99).

Colt Stafford grew up with resentment burned into his soul. His mother told him to trust God with all his heart, but when Colt lost her to a tragic car wreck, he decided if God existed, he sure wasn’t anyone who could be trusted. His dad, Sam, was a power-loving, money-hungry man building a beef empire, but his ambition left little for his son.

It wasn’t too difficult for Colt, once grown, to shrug off his cowboy boots for shiny Manhattan loafers and a promising career on Wall Street. When stock market manipulations send his career as a hedge fund manager plummeting, he’s left financially strapped and decides to return to the sprawling Double S ranch in Gray’s Glen, Washington. Herne painted Colt’s experiences from what she had learned of real-life stock market woes. “I have two sons living in Manhattan. I watched their brilliant friends get rolled under a bus with the crash of 2008, and examining the underpinnings of what went wrong, I saw an area ripe for character development.”

Colt may be broke, but he’s not yet broken. As he limps home, he doesn’t expect to be greeted on arrival by his dad’s new house manager: a tough but beautiful stranger with a loaded gun pointed at his chest. Colt senses there’s more to Angelina Morales than meets the eye, and he’s determined to find out what she’s hiding . . . and why. Meanwhile, his younger brother, Nick, has been Dad’s right-hand man for years and isn’t thrilled with Colt inserting himself into Double S affairs. As Wall Street recovers, will Colt succumb to the call of the financial district’s wealth and power, or will he find the courage to stay in the saddle for good?

Herne encourages readers that family tensions, while never easy, can be more easily solved than one thinks — and it’s important to mend those fences. “A dear friend of mine once said holding grudges in families is one of the most grievous of sins because how can we expect to change the world if we can’t forgive one another? I’ve always held that close to my heart,” Herne admits. “Forgive, put a smile on your face and move on.”

Ultimately the lessons learned in Back in the Saddle are lessons for everyone: that disruptions to the status quo might be a reminder of God’s presence and the imperfections in life are sometimes pretty perfect after all.

Readers will want to keep their eyes peeled for more in the Double S Ranch series, with book two, Home on the Range, releasing in October of this year.

  • RELAXING AND ENGAGING!

What a wonderful, carefree western! I thoroughly enjoyed rewarding myself with a good book after working all Saturday raking leaves!

Back in the Saddle is a well written, engaging, fun novel with just enough depth to give it meaning. Thanks for sharing your talents, Ruth!

  • ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’ REVIEW

To be honest at the very beginning I kept feeling like there was a backstory from a previous novel. The beginning of the book refers to the past a lot, and I felt like it was updating readers, but sure enough, this is the first book in the series. I see now that it was all just for background reference.

All in all I really liked the characters and this story line. I’d like to read the next book and see who it focuses on next!

  • ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’

For lovers of the modern cowboy genre this book is a goody. Filled with memorable characters who are down to earth and likable this book is a good and interesting read. The take on the prodigal son was good and made the book all the more interesting. This book had just enough mystery and intrigue to keep you wondering what would happen next.

Back in the Saddle is an enjoyable, quick read, hard to put down. I like the way it emphasizes the importance of communication in relationships. It speaks of the loss of a parent in several scenarios: death, abandonment, divorce. It also speaks of single dads, which not many books do.

This book is about true family dynamics, change, understanding, and ultimately love. It is a good, Christian based novel that isn’t preachy. The characters are real, and their lives are believable and “normal.”

  • ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’

I really liked how realistic these characters were. They were flawed and had their own issues. Colt came home to everything being different. His family has it’s issues and this is a good prodigal son book. Angelina is strong in her faith where Colt isn’t. The overall theme of forgiveness is good. I really liked the characters and the ranch that this author created.

  • ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’ | BOOK REVIEW

Overall, a sweet modern story with a hint of the prodigal son parable. I really did enjoy the story, but the spiritual substance was lacking for me. There were verses quoted, prayers to God, and overall, a good bit of mention of God. However, it was unclear if Colt was saved at the beginning and “got right” with God as the book progressed? Like I said, it was a sweet story, but it just didn’t stand out as a strong faith-filled book.

  • {{BOOK REVIEW}} ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’ | THE PRODIGAL IS COMING HOME.

I’m going to be 100% honest here, without being too brutal…the first few chapters of Back in The Saddle by Ruth Logan Herne did not pull me in at all. I couldn’t connect and really just wanted to give up on the book, but I kept on reading. After a few chapters(quite a few actually) the book peaked my interest and I kept reading the book.

I fell in love with the characters and ranch! Her characters are well developed and I like that there is a lot going on with all of the characters, setting it up to be an interesting series. • ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’ (A DOUBLE S NOVEL #1)

I think Ruth Logan Herne has crafted a believable story of a family and each individual son, which is believable and enjoyable. The Lord has changed the atmosphere in the home and in Sam. Will those heart transformations reach Colt and Nick? I really thought it brilliant that the widowed mother of Angelina wanted to be busy and enjoyed doing work on the ranch such as cooking and laundry. Perhaps we forget that as we grow older we don’t want to be put away but be of use and be with people we love and care about.

I love cowboy western books and this story didn’t disappoint! The characters weren’t perfect and there was some conflict; but alot of the conflict was overcome by patience, forgiveness, and God’s grace.

I especially loved the ranch housekeeper, Angelina and how she helped the men come together for the good of the ranch and community. All the characters were delightful and the ranch sounded so warm and inviting. It was the perfect setting for a multiple story series.

I found myself drawn into this book from the start. The characters in this book are fantastic, they are real people with lives that are messy and not perfect. I enjoyed all of them especially Colt. Colt isn’t perfect and he knows that. The characters were down-to-earth, realistic people who could be your next door neighbors (if you lived in Gray’s Glen, Washington). • REVIEW: ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’ BY RUTH LOGAN HERNE

I liked Colt so much! I appreciated that he rose above painful events in his past to work hard and try to make a name for himself, yet when things fell apart and he was also needed at home, he didn’t hesitate to give his all on the ranch as well. He was such a strong and honorable man. Angelina was a wonderful character as well. She really brought the faith element alive in Back in the Saddle, plus she had a very interesting back story. Colt and Angelina’s romance was a beautiful one that I really enjoyed reading about.

Back in the Saddle is a charming love story, between two interesting characters. The opening is very attention grabbing, and the story is fast paced throughout the book. I literally laughed out loud at a conversation between Angelina (who keeps house for Sam) and Sam, where he says, “But I’m not a jerk now.” Although it was funny, it was also a good reminder that you can’t expect one act of kindness to cancel out a lifetime of less than kind behavior.

Their story is sweet and I love the mutual respect they have for each other — I just wish they had more alone time. With all of the characters and the drama that the town itself faces, I felt it didn’t leave much room for their romance to develop in an authentic way. The ending was so rushed. I really enjoyed Back in the Saddle as it was a well-written romance and an excellent start to a series leaving me wanting more! Ruth dives right into the story and the action with Colt hearing a clicking of a gun being pointed at him. Back in the Saddle held my attention and really drew me into the drama of the town, the home and the characters’ lives.

  • ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’ BY RUTH LOGAN HERNE

Back in the Saddle is expertly written in a dramatic, modern style that will keep you turning page after page. It’s definitely a cowboy romance, but with deep, interesting characters and an ongoing plot, it’s a cowboy story of the highest caliber.

It is rare to find me crying over a book, but a certain scene between a father and a son towards the end of this one had tears streaming down my face.

  • ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’

The author did a great job of setting the scene so the reader could picture the landscape, family drama, town relationships, and growing romance that made up the book. The characters grew on me and I liked their authenticity and faith. The characters deal with some really tough issues and handled them with grace, at least most of the time. I liked how the author didn’t sugar coat real problems, but had the characters working them out with faith and grit. The importance of family is really emphasized and the overall theme of faith and trust in God is throughout the story.

  • REVIEW: ‘BACK IN THE SADDLE’ BY RUTH LOGAN HERNE

I’ve always enjoyed the stories of Ruth Logan Herne. She has a certain way of writing her characters that make me feel like it’s easy to get to know them. I absolutely loved the setting of the ranch amid the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. It gave a great foundation of peace and beauty for the conflicts and hard work Colt and Angelina endure.
