We all pray . . . some.

We pray to stay sober, centered, or solvent. When the lump is deemed malignant. When the money runs out before the month does. When the marriage is falling apart. We pray.

But wouldn’t we like to pray more? Better? Stronger? With more fire, faith, and fervency?

Yet we have kids to feed, bills to pay, deadlines to meet. The calendar pounces on our good intentions like a tiger on a rabbit. And what about our checkered history with prayer? Uncertain words. Unmet expectations. Unanswered requests.

We aren’t the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In fact, prayer is the only tutorial they ever requested.

And Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer. Couldn’t we use the same?

In Before Amen best-selling author Max Lucado joins readers on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, Max reminds readers that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin.

  • BEFORE AMEN REVIEW

Lucado is the type of author who will speak straight to the reader. He is honest about his struggles and victories. He is humorous. His works are easy to read because it is like having a conversation with a friend. This book is about the power of prayer. How often do we struggle with prayer, or even forget to use this powerful tool? In this book the author demonstrates how we should pray (as to a friend; our father; someone all-powerful) and why prayer is so important.

  • BEFORE AMEN BY MAX LUCADO ~ BUILDING A STRONGER, FAITH FILLED PRAYER LIFE ~ #REVIEW

Before Amen is a powerful and amazing book, well written for those who really desire to strengthen their prayer life and communication with God. It has made me stop and think of the way I approach prayer. I see it as a way to give God my requests and expectations, but I should see it for the privilege it truly is. I need to approach God with reverence yet a child-like heart full of love and desire to spend time in his presence. This book is Highly recommended by this blogger!

I devoured it in one sitting.

If you need a practical, pointed, easy-to-digest tutorial on the power a simple prayer can unleash in your life & the lives of those you love,

  • BEFORE AMEN BY MAX LUCADO

I don’t pray like that. I have never prayed like that. When someone asks me to pray in a group my mind goes completely blank. I can think of nothing intelligent…or stupid to say at all. In fact, it’s not just when I’m asked to pray in a group. Often when I attempt to pray on my own the same thing happens.

Max knows people like that too. And while he doesn’t specifically say he’s jealous, I’m confident that he has felt those pangs of envy on more than one occasion.

What is to be done with this? Why are some people “blessed” with a strong, vibrant prayer life and other people struggle just to string coherent words together when life is good?

We aren’t alone in our struggles and questions. In fact, we’re in very good company. You see the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray.

  • LITFUSE PRESENTS, BEFORE AMEN BY MAX LUCADO

One thing that helped me with his book is that he teaches us to give our request to the Lord and leave them there. So many times I pray about something, and then find myself trying to figure out the answer to my prayers, or worrying about the situation after I have prayed about it. Lucado teaches us to bring our request before God and leave them there

  • Somehow Lucado is able to hit home with solid truth, without coming across as a heavy book on theology (not that those don’t have their place!). This is a book written to a large audience, to anyone who simply wants to talk to God as a child does with his dad, because that’s what prayer is. Nothing in this book is revolutionary, or even anything new, but it’s a simple reminder of things we know but have maybe forgotten.

  • SIMPLE LOOK AT PRAYER THROUGH NEW LENS

Max Lucado brings a fresh perspective filled with child-like faith to the study of prayer in his new book before amen. That’s what struck me about the book. The way Max Lucado highlights the true father-child relationship of prayer. I read passages of this book to my husband because they so struck me. I also highlighted, underlined, and tweeted thoughts…not because they were so revolutionary. But because in their very simplicity, the concepts urge me to approach my Father God as a child. To curl up in His lap and share my days and concerns. Prayer doesn’t need to be complicated or pious. All that is needed is a heart ready for and seeking relationship.

  • BEFORE AMEN BY:MAX LUCADO

I have always been a fan of Max Lucado books. This one is no different. We all pray in our own way. I love how Max makes it so simple and easy to understand. So easy, anyone can understand. Prayer is about talking to God. Plain and simple. No need for some formal prayers or recited out of repetition but prayers that are heartfelt and simple are what God desires. He wants to hear out hearts. He already knows them but desires our heart to communicate with His. I recommend this book as a simple read. It is simple and not deep at all. Plain and simple.

  • PRAY!

I would recommend this amazing book to anyone who is struggling in their prayer life and they are wanting to become closer to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I liked how Max Lucado wrote in a way that was very practical and easy for readers to comprehend. I liked how he illustrated that when children talk to their father, they use simple language and they don’t have to use the most vocabulary words. I learned that prayer can be simple and it doesn’t have to be dramatic and I don’t have to pray to impress God or anyone else. He wants me to pray what’s in my heart and in my mind. Max reminded readers to come to God like a little child and I think this is critical.

  • WHAT WE’RE READING

Max Lucado always writes such inspiring reads so I was quite excited to have the chance to review this new one of his. This has been the topic a great deal lately, in sermons, in songs I listen to .. prayer/ We all pray. But do we really PRAY? In this fabulous and simple (I could not put it down read) he goes to the heart of biblical prayer. He directs us toward the hope for times when we are full of doubts and he shows us how to have confidence even when we are struggling; when are prayers are weak or minimal. Max Lucado reminds us all that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art but rather it is direct communication with our God. He wants to hear from us, He wants us to hear from Him. And there is power like no other in prayer. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation.

  • BEFORE AMEN:THE POWER OF SIMPLE PRAYER BY MAX LUCADO

Max Lucado has an unequaled ability to use language and images we all encounter daily to bring us closer to Christ and God. In Before Amen he challenges us to improve our prayer life, not by becoming Biblical scholars or memorizing complicated litanies, but by speaking what is in our hearts. Lucado gives us the words to a simple prayer, not for us to copy word for word, but to show us that our simple words should praise our Creator, acknowledge our need for Him, recognize the needs of others, and also express our gratitude. I love his image that we are all children needing to climb into the lap of our loving father, who hears and understands our needs before we utter a comprehensible word. Like many Lucado books, the simple narrative may read quickly, but the message is powerful, desiring of several re-reads. I would like to thank Litfuse and Thomas Nelson Publishing for a review copy of this title.

  • BEFORE AMEN

Before Amen is a book about prayer. It brings us to the point do we really pray for or how we truly are to pray. It can be hard to understand how we are to pray, and yet Jesus gives us the answer in Matthew 6:9-13, in the Lord’s prayer.

Yet Max also addresses the names of God but yet there are many. He reminds us that God is our Abba (Father) and we can go to him and ask him. We go to him to pray for many things. We wait and pray for the upcoming appointments in the way he has readied for us.

Many times we pray for the needs of others. We are his children and we know that laying it at his feet because He is the one who can do it, not us. He is the one who can fulfill our needs and everything. He has enabled me to stay home in such a way. We needed some extra income, but yet we needed this income. Yet God helped us in such a way. He enabled me to stay home in such a way, yes we had this need for income but God provided in such a way that I could stay home. This was prayed about and yet sometimes our needs are prayed over and answered, but sometimes it takes awhile for the need to be answered.

Max Lucado is an author whom has written so many books that I have enjoyed over the years and his latest, “Before Amen” does not disappoint in the least! Prayer, it seems so easy and straightforward, yet it is something that is so easily overlooked, forgotten about until one is in desperate need and the beauty and significance is so underappreciated. Max shares the power of prayer and a basic guideline or model for each of use to use to help us really understand, use and appreciate to power of prayer and the One whom we are praying to.

Before Amen makes prayer more real for those of us who deal with real all day long. By offering a “Pocket Prayer” and other simple strategies, this book challenged me to make prayer a more natural part of my life. I loved the ABC’s of gratitude that were in the last chapter. This book would be an excellent resource for those who need a quick, to the point message to deliver at communion meditation.

  • A REAL CONVERSATION

If you have ever read a Max Lucado book, then you are familiar with his gift of story telling. In typical Lucado style, Before Amen is the perfect blend of superb story and pastoral exhortation to re-think the way we approach God in prayer. Lucado doesn’t provide a “prayer formula” but encourages his readers to draw near to the heart of God in conversation and fellowship. Lucado guides the reader like a father might gently lead his child to stop doubting and being afraid we are “getting it all wrong” when is comes to having a conversation with God. He concisely lays out the essential elements of biblical prayer and encourages those reading to begin the conversation in faith.

  • BOOK REVIEW: “BEFORE AMEN” BY MAX LUCADO

Max Lucado writes the greatest books in the world and this book is his best yet! With “Before Amen” he is looking at “The Lord’s Prayer” in an entirely different light than what we are used to. In nine chapters he breaks down what Jesus said and shows us a new way to approach the Throne of God. I am fascinated at what Pastor Lucado was able to come out with. This is life changing stuff. Simplicity. God wants to hear from us and He really enjoys it when we call Him Father, or Daddy. Once we got that down then the rest of the verses are easy. “Before Amen” is a book that you might want to read a few times.

  • SIMPLE BUT NOT SIMPLISTIC

I found Max Lucado’s Before Amen: The Power of a Simple Prayer a very, easy, quick read. But definitely not simplistic. Knowing humanity’s propensity to make something easy difficult, Jesus gave His disciples a basic prayer to work from. Max breaks this prayer down into bite-size pieces and gives us real-life connections and examples of how to make it practical in our lives today. I know I will apply the principles to my own prayers from now on.

  • A BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW

What can one say about author Max Lucado except that he is one of my absolute favorite authors, and one of the very few that I can say I have read ALL of his books. His writing is such that it draws you closer to the Lord and allows you to understand deeper topics like pain and suffering, waiting in hard times, why Jesus died, in ways I never would have thought. Lucado writes with a simplicity that I just crave, and I know others do too. Sometimes, okay most times, simple is so much better. Lucado takes us through the topic of prayer and humbles himself right out of the gate, admitting he too (a pastor!) struggles with prayer and time to pray. To hear this prolific author and well-known pastor admit this means there is hope for me, a busy wife, woman and mom! While not a deep study on prayer, Lucado shows the read that prayer does not in fact need to be long winded and deep, but simple to be effective in our lives. He talks about healing prayer, praying for others and how to pray.

Max Lucado’s newest book, Before Amen, The Power of a Simple Prayer, is a “how to” book about prayer. For anyone who has ever wondered how to approach God in prayer or just simply how to pray, this book is for you.

I loved the way Mr. Lucado started chapter one, “Hello my name is Max. I’m a recovering prayer wimp. I doze off when I pray. My thoughts zig, then zag, then zig again.” I could have made that same statement entering ‘Cindy’ for Max. Let’s be honest, I’m sure some of you out there start prying at bedtime and the next thing you know you are waking up and never said ‘amen’. Or you’re in church and the pastor is leading prayer and your mind zig’s to what to fix for lunch or where you plan to go after church. If that’s you, this book is for you.

  • BEFORE AMEN THE POWER OF SIMPLE PRAYER BY MAX LUCADO BOOK REVIEW

Max Lucado’s, Before Amen The Power of Simple Prayer! This is actually the first Max Lucado book I’ve finished reading. I have quite a few copies of his books as he is a very accomplished author, but I’ve never finished a book. Now that is no fault of his, it is solely mine. I tend to start reading too many books at one time. I usually read two books for review purposes at all times. Then I have the book we are reading in Sunday School. Then I have my Bible study books I am reading. So something has to give and it usually the books I chose to read for pleasure.

I am so glad I finally picked up a copy of Max Lucado’s writing and finished it! There is power in prayer, I’ve seen it and experienced it before. But after reading Before Amen, I know beyond a shadow of doubt.

  • BEFORE AMEN BY MAX LUCADO

This was a shorter book but that didn’t diminish the power of the message at all. As someone who has grown up in the church prayer has always been a part of my life but to be honest I struggle with it a lot. I know all the facts but this book made them hit home a little more and has helped me a lot. If prayer is something that has always seemed a little out there to you or if you worry about what to say, or you have any other hang ups when it comes to prayer then I would highly recommend this book. Max Lucado does a fantastic job of sharing God’s truths that we sometimes miss!

The book isn’t really a “how to” manual, it is more on how the author feels about prayer and backed up by scripture. Max Lucado is a strong encourager and explains [in my words] that we should not treat prayer as a one way ticket to getting everything we want because God will definitely see through all of that. Our one line of communication that is a more direct way I believe is through prayer.

  • BEFORE AMEN

Lucado’s emphasis in Before Amen is on making prayer approachable and simple for anyone. One of my favorite quotes was: “We Speak. He listens. He speaks. We listen. This is prayer in its purest form.” (pg.11) Throughout the book, I felt like Lucado reiterated the approachability of both God and prayer as well as advocated prayer as a means of experiencing deeper intimacy with God.

Max Lucado is a teacher, writer, pastor, who any type of learner can understand. He speaks “plain” as my dad used to say.
I appreciate Max expressing his own frustration at praying. He stated he has a tendency to fall asleep while praying. I’m reminded that once upon a time, my prayer time was right before I fell asleep at night, and most of the time I fell asleep before ending the prayer.

  • WONDERFUL, SIMPLE PRAYER GUIDE!

This book is a great statement on prayer. It is in depth, yet short enough that it isn’t overwhelming for a busy mom. Furthermore, it’s on such an important subject matter that it’s worth taking the time to read. Max Lucado breaks down the sample prayer we are given with the Lord’s prayer, and pulls out important truths that we can apply to our own prayer lives. He sprinkles lots of personal anecdotes to add interest, and adds enough scripture throughout that the reader can be confident that the word being taught is Biblically sound. If you have ever struggled with not knowing how or what to pray, this is a great little pocket guide.

  • BEFORE AMEN

This is a quick easy to read book (only about 125 pages). Max explains that one does not have to be an eloquent speaker to be a great prayer warrior. One only needs to go to the Lord like one would a loving father and humbly seek His will–help and guidance–praising Him for His wonderful works. Speaking to God like one would a close friend. If you are seeking to go deeper in your prayer life without all the red tape of theology this might be the book for you.

  • BEFORE AMEN BY MAX LUCADO

A good discussion Mr. Lucado brings is the feeling of guilt people burden themselves with and do not have the knowledge on letting it go and giving it to God through prayer. Once you pray, you must learn to leave whatever you are confessing with God and not revisit it at anytime. Intercessory prayer is also powerful when praying to cover others than yourself as Jesus did while hanging on the cross praying for his enemies, “Father forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:23, KJV). If Jesus prayed for his enemies who crucified him then we can also pray for those who do not have good intentions towards us.

Before Amen shows readers that there IS power in prayer. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between GOD and His children. This book starts off with The Pocket Prayer. The Pocket Prayer is a short prayer that is easy to memorize. My favorite chapter in the book has to be “Thank You”. Max Lucado listed in alphabetical order things he was thankful for. That chapter shows readers that there are so many things to be thankful for.

Before Amen was sent to me about 10 days ago. I began reading immediately and fell deep into the words. The words written spoke to my heart on so many levels because I could relate. We fall short on the time we pray because life can become so busy we tend to forget that God is waiting for us to reach out to Him. Why do we tend to pray last instead of first? I am so guilty of this but through the writing of Max Lucado’s book I have learned that God is approachable and so worth reaching out to Him in every aspect of my life. I enjoyed the book tremendously and would recommend it to anyone searching.

  • BOOK REVIEW: BEFORE AMEN BY MAX LUCADO

I absolutely adore the premise of this book! Too many people don’t pray at all because they fear they are doing it all wrong. I hope this book finds its way into the hands of many.

My only true fault with this book is how short it is. I know that’s a bit ironic considering the point of the book is about being simple and to the point. Even so, this book has WIDE margins and still only reaches 125 pages. The brevity of the book from such an accomplished author was a disappointment.

I like to turn pages down, or highlight something to read again later. I would have highlighted the whole book. How do we address God when we pray? Father. That’s all we need. There are no secret words, no code words, just words from the heart. And you don’t even need to speak. God hears you. We all pray some, but to pray more, better, fire, faith, and fervency? Check out this book! Lucado does a great job breaking it all down and explaining how simple it really is. Believe God is who He is, trust Him with what you can’t handle, believe in His word, and watch God move.

  • BEFORE AMEN REVIEW

But wouldn’t we like to pray . . . More? Better? Stronger? With more fire, faith, and fervency?

My soul screamed yes as I read those statements. Prayer has never been something I’ve been a huge fan of and I’ve wanted to be a fan for so long. I’d get bored while praying and move on to other things or even go days without praying at all. I rolled my eyes when I had to pray for my meal. I knew this shouldn’t be the attitude I had towards prayer, but I couldn’t kick it. I discovered that I wasn’t supposed to be the one making all of the effort to kick it on my own. I needed God to transform my attitude and heart and this book reminded me just that and prompted a major transformation.

  • REVIEW: BEFORE AMEN: THE POWER OF A SIMPLE PRAYER BY MAX LUCADO

Before Amen is quick and simple book that can be read in a few short hours. The reading level of the text is easy: short sentences, easy words, and small chapters. Lucado relies on humorous quips that help readers relate to the theological aspect of the book and emotional stories to draw out readers’ faith. However, with the limited number of pages in the book and the simplicity of the text, Before Amen lacks the depth needed to truly impact readers in meaningful way in regards to prayer life.

I was so thankful to be a part of this blog tour, it was just what I needed! I think God answers prayers and I really needed a refresher! Imagine this scenario and let me know if it sounds familiar. I start to pray, thinking of the kids. I usually start with thanks and then requests for their health and safety. Then suddenly I am wondering if they remembered to put their coats back on for recess or if they finished their lunch. Oh, then I remember that I have to pack snacks for a school party and other errands I need to do. My prayer becomes my thoughts and to do list and I wonder what happened! It was really surprising to know that even author Max Lucado has issues with this!

This is a good little book — a quick read. (It took me just over an hour.) None of it was anything “new,” but I’m glad I read it. There’s something about reading wholesome material . . . Even if it’s not brand new to you, it’s still refreshing to take it in. That’s what I found this book on prayer to be: a simple reminder of how we should live in a mindful state of prayer and communion with God. Engaging stories and anecdotes are scattered throughout the book, which made it more fun to read. This may come as a surprise, but I have never read a book by Max Lucado! I’m glad I finally got the chance; I think this book would be a great, easy read for new Christians in particular.

The best chapter of the book was chapter 5, “Heal Me.” Lucado asserts, “It is inconsistent to say that Jesus saved your soul but not your body. I have been a long time fan of Max Lucado, but I feel like his latest book may be one of his best! As always, Max draws from his own personal experiences and then takes readers by the hand, guiding them through the Scriptures into a deeper understanding of prayer.
I love that this book is simple in form, but complex in meaning. Max begins by helping readers understand prayer in its purest form…”We speak. He (God) listens. He speaks. We listen.” I think so many of us don’t know that listening is just as much a part of the prayer process as speaking.
