A guide to making important mother/daughter conversations easier

Trish Donohue writes to moms who want to disciple through relationship

7/1/2016 || Seattle: The relationship girls have with their mothers greatly impacts the women they become, and for busy moms in the thick of the parenting years that reality can seem overwhelming. Author Trish Donohue brings guidance for women who want to disciple their daughters but don’t know where to start in Between Us Girls: Walks and Talks for Moms and Daughters (New Growth Press/June 6, 2016/ISBN: 978-1-942572-77-0/$15.99).

As a mom to two girls, Donohue knows the kinds of questions women ask themselves when considering their influence on their daughters: Am I being a good example? What are the most critical life lessons and spiritual insights I should be imparting to them? Am I getting through to them? Balancing these concerns with the hectic nature of daily life can feel daunting, which is why Donohue wrote this guide filled with 26 gospel-driven talks, or “walks,” designed for moms and daughters between the ages of 7-14. Each walk covers a topic from feelings and friendships to work and modesty. Much more than a devotional, Donohue describes her book as a cheat sheet, making it much simpler for moms to connect with their daughters on a meaningful level and converse about their lives, the world and the hope they have in Jesus Christ.

Each chapter of Between Us Girls is divided into four sections: “The Garden,” which is God’s original plan for a particular issue, “The Weeds,” which shows how sin has made a mess of things, “The Hill,” which refers to how Jesus’ work on the cross redeems all things and finally “The Field,” which is where readers apply the principles learned in day-to-day life.

In each short chapter, moms and daughters will read God’s Word, ask each other questions about their thoughts and experiences, get honest about their struggles with sin, brainstorm ways to live out their faith and build genuine fellowship into their relationship. “I recommend setting aside a special time to meet every week or two,” Donohue adds. “They should grab Between Us Girls and their Bibles and find a private place; it could be a cozy spot at home, a coffee shop or a picnic table at the park. Moms should jump right into the book, reading the chapter to their daughters. Whenever a question is asked, whether it’s directed to mothers or girls, stop and answer it. Each answer will help build trust and fellowship in their relationship.”

Mothers and daughters, even if they’re in the midst of the sometimes-turbulent pre-teen years, will find hope for connection within the covers of Between Us Girls. “You don’t have to be best friends to honor God in your relationship with your child,” Donohue reminds readers. “If she sits quietly through the walks, that’s fine, because she’s still hearing the truth of God’s Word. If she won’t be vulnerable with you, you can lead by example and be vulnerable with her. Don’t let fear keep you from pursuing and discipling your daughter.”

Ultimately, Between Us Girls will serve as a springboard for moms and daughters into a wonderful, lifelong journey of communication, relationship and a deep love for their Savior.

Advance Praise

Between Us Girls by Trish Donohue is the resource moms have been looking for to help them connect with their growing daughters. Trish weaves together meaningful Bible study, helpful questions and life applications in a way that is provoking but not preachy. My wife is excited to start using it in our home.” —Marty Machowski, family pastor; author of The Ology and The Gospel Story for Kids books and curriculum

“In the midst of our busy lives, it is easy to forsake our best intentions for purposeful parenting. Adding to the struggle is not knowing how to enter in to the world of our girls with gospel truth. Between Us Girls provides a deliberate plan for bonding together over God’s Word in a way that is fun, without sacrificing depth. What I love most though is Trish Donohue’s ability to hand our daughters the biblical lenses to see each topic and the world around them rightly.” —Kristen Hatton, author of Get Your Story Straight: A Teen’s Guide to Learning & Living the Gospel

About the Author

Trish Donohue is a wife and mom who writes from her kitchen table in West Chester, PA.  She has a degree in English from Bloomsburg University and taught writing classes. Donohue currently leads the women’s ministry at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, PA, where her husband, Jim, serves as pastor.

A desire to disciple her two daughters paired with a love for writing motivated the writing of her first book, Between Us Girls. In her free time, Donohue enjoys taking walks and gardening, which also provided inspiration. She admits her vegetable garden is almost always full of weeds, so she’s familiar with the “Weeds” sections of each chapter.

In addition to their two daughters, the Donohues also have two sons. Together they enjoy road trips, especially to the beach, and stops for ice cream. While her family is made up of sports fans, she would rather cozy up by the fireplace and read.

  • GREAT FOR JUMPSTARTING GOOD CONVERSATIONS

I really like this book, the topics and how it is laid out. Personally, I plan on using it to do bible journaling with my daughter. I find bible journaling works best for me when I have a bible study to use as a jumping off point. My daughter is the artistic type and loves to do artsy things with me (and artist I ain’t, so don’t be intimidated!).

  • POTENTIALLY LIFE CHANGING FOR MOMS AND DAUGHTERS

I think every Christian mom wants to share her faith in raising her daughter to love the Lord, yet it’s not always easy. Between Us Girls provides that framework in an easy-to-understand and enjoyable setting. Some questions are just plain fun, and no preparation or knowledge is necessary. And I think one of the most compelling features is that this study isn’t one sided; mom has to be open and honest also. It’s a fact that as two people in relationship grow closer to God, they also grow closer to each other, and that’s an added blessing of this study. The greatest compliment I can give is to say that I wish Between Us Girls had been available when my daughter was growing up. Highly recommended.

  • ‘BETWEEN US GIRLS’

A great book for mothers and daughters to use to connect with each other and with God. This book is a good resource not only for mothers to use with their daughters, but for aunt-niece or older sibling younger sibling relationships as well. I love how there are questions for both the “moms” and “daughters” to ask and discuss. I would recommend this to mothers that want to better their parenting skills.

  • ‘BETWEEN US GIRLS’

This book is excellent! I love that it is set up to get mothers and daughters (or women and girls in general) talking about important issues and ties scripture into the discussions. I love the questions that accompany each walk! While my daughter is still kind of young for this book, I look forward to picking it up again when she is a little older, so we can do it together. For now, it was fun for me to go through and do my answers on the questions. I like that this book will get everyone thinking and stimulate discussion, some deep and some lighthearted.

  • GREAT DISCUSSION STARTERS

This book is absolutely full of good topics and conversation starters. It covers things such as friendships, feelings, families, fears, clothing, role model, hard times, and more.

There are questions in the book for both mom and daughter, allowing both parties to share authentically and cause the relationship to grow.

Scripture is intertwined throughout the conversation. Each chapter covers a significant portion of Scripture and I love that the passage is not included in the book (so you have to read it from your Bible).

I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of this book! Though I am a mom of a boy, I get lots of opportunities to minister to pre-teen and teen girls in my church and community and thought that this would be a great resource for me. I was right!

  • ‘BETWEEN US GIRLS’

The book is small and compact, but filled with lots of fun and useful information. The author begins with the idea of a walk between mother and daughter as they talk and share. Each chapter is based on this idea. They begin with a devotional or thought on the chapter’s subject. There are questions for the mom and daughter to answer, Bible passages to read, and thoughts to ponder. Each one covers a topic that needs to be addressed, a learning experience, or a subject that is connecting in regards to relationships. I loved the concept and can’t wait to try these out with my daughter.

  • YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A MOM TO USE THIS BOOK!

Who should pick up BUGs? Any mom who wants or needs a starting point for important conversations with their daughter. I imagine these conversations would be best utilized with girls between the ages of 7yrs-18yrs. I understand that is a rather wide range, but these conversations would be wonderful for girls before hitting puberty, during the tumultuous time of middle school, or as a way to reconnect or solidify your relationship in high school.

To be honest, you don’t have to be a mom to utilize this book. If you mentor or have a girl who calls you mom because you love her like a daughter. Then I would highly recommend picking up BUGs.

  • ‘BETWEEN US GIRLS: WALKS AND TALKS FOR MOMS AND DAUGHTERS’ BY TRISH DONOHUE

I was blessed to receive the devotional Between Us Girls by Trish Donohue and it has been amazing.

Sometimes you really yearn for some deeper connections and conversations with your daughters as a mom, yet you don’t want to force it. This devotional steps you through daily or weekly Walks & Talks for Moms and Daughters. The basis is the Bible and growing and learning in faith, but it goes beyond that. Through these chapters you can learn more about each other in a more natural and unforced way. Some of it is light, like talking about eye color and some is heaverier. It talks through situattions like peer pressure and how to handle it with a bible view.

I have looked forward to this time with my daughter every day and she loves it too.

  • LOVED IT!

Each chapter is fairly short, at approximately 5 pages each. I would recommend this book for Mothers with daughters who are at the tween age of around 9-13. The description of the books says that it is not necessary to prep for any of the chapters, but I would still recommend reading it ahead of time just to get a feel for what type of book it is.

  • ‘BETWEEN US GIRLS’ {A LITFUSE PUBLICITY GROUP REVIEW}

I really felt like this is a good book to go through with my daughter. The talks are scripted, so it’s open and go through together. All I have to do is to read what’s written, look up scripture and answer the questions with my daughter. My daughter’s love language is personal time, so I know she’ll thrill to being able to spend that time with me. The talks also don’t talk down to Moms or daughters and are an excellent resource for building relationship and creating discipleship time. I look forward to spending many weeks working through this with Emalee.
