Beyond the Silence (Bethany House, January 2016)

The shadows over this olive grove hide more than just the truth.

Lillian Porter has always wanted to fulfill her mother’s dream of going west, so when she hears about a nanny position in Angels Camp, California, she defies her grandfather and takes a chance on a new future. But she quickly wonders if she made the right choice. Murky rumors swirl around Woodward Colton, her new employer, but the gossip doesn’t match the man Lillian comes to know.

Still, something dark did happen in the family’s past. Lillian’s seven-year-old charge hasn’t spoken in over a year. Gently, Lillian tries to coax him out of his shell, hoping he’ll one day feel safe enough to share what scared him. But the Colton olive farm is no longer a safe place. Lillian encounters suspicious characters on their land and mysterious damage done to the farm. When the housekeeper is brutally attacked, the town once again suspects the worst. Will discovering the truth help Lillian clear the name of the man she has come to love–or will it endanger her even more?

  • REALLY GOOD READ! LOVED IT!

I’ve been a fan of Tracie Peterson’s stories for years, and I enjoyed the books I read by Kimberley Woodhouse. Beyond the Silence lived up to my expectations from these authors and is a really good read!

All of the characters are so real to life; it was like I could watch the movie in my mind as I read. The supporting characters are varied and definitely needed for the story. It doesn’t exactly say what condition Harry has; just that he is a simple-minded man. He is such an interesting part of the story as he deals with the villain and the heroine.

  • HISTORICAL MYSTERY AT ITS BEST

Combining the story-telling strengths of two of my favorite Christian authors is a huge success in my reading enjoyment. Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse recently released their second book collaboration, Beyond the Silence, and brought a new and wonderful voice to the historical mystery/suspense genre. Even in the middle of all the necessary extra work of packing up and moving two states west, I found it hard to put the book down.

I became so involved in the characters’ stories, it will be a long time before I quit wondering at what the future held for them.

The book is well researched and brings to life the times of the California gold rush and its aftermath. So if you are a fan of historical mystery/suspense, I can highly recommend Beyond the Silence.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BY TRACIE PETERSON & KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE

This story opened with a bang. From the first paragraph, it was hard to put down. I have found out, that when these two authors write a story together, that is how their books will be. The story takes you through so many places and lets you see it from several different eyes, it keeps you turning the pages.

This is another book where the title got my attention. If the title makes me wonder what the book is about I tend to pick it up. Just judging by the title it sounds like the story could be potentially tragic which it is since it starts with something pretty horrifying happening. It just grabs you from the first page and you keep turning the pages.

This is a wonderful mystery with memorable characters and an intriguing plot line. I like how the love story developed as the two main characters get to know each other, it was sweet and fun to be along for the ride. • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

I really enjoyed this read! It had mystery, clean romance, some humor, and some tear-jerking moments. There were a splattering of scripture throughout, but it never felt forced to me or “preachy”. There were various story lines/characters happening at the same time (Lillian with her grandfather, Lillian with Woody, Woody’s son, Harry a simple-minded brother, a murderous “good-for-nothing” brother…), which propelled me to keep reading. Tracie Paterson is an author I’ve read a lot through the years, and I love her and the collaboration with Kimberley Woodhouse on this book.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BOOK REVIEW

This book has an interesting lead character in Lillian. She is brave and independent but still very God-fearing. I like how she is balanced in obedience to God, herself and then elders/employers. I think today we lose a lot of that balance and women are just plowing along. Often times books with strong female leads take liberties of making them without good character (morals). This isn’t the case with Beyond The Silence.

Another thing is this book has a great story. It opens with a murder and then just flies on from there. The love story is very subtle, I think it could have been expanded on a little bit but I just love how Lillian falls in love with the whole family. The ending was really good with everything sorted out (I hate when books leave loose ends!)

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BY TRACIE PETERSON AND KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE (PLUS A GIVEAWAY AND FACEBOOK PARTY)

The character development is fantastic. The character of Colton is more than just words on a page, he become real the more you read. He is accused of murdering his wife, and his child is rendered literally speechless after his mother’s brutal death. This story is a prime example of presumed guilt and the dangers of gossip. The townsfolk act as judge and jury and convict Colton in the land of gossip, even if not by the criminal justice system. Lillian longed to travel out west, much to the dismay of her family. She begins to question her choice when she hears the same rumors that have been plaguing Colton’s life since the death of his wife. She longs to gain the trust of his son, and she strives to prove his innocence, if not for him but for herself because she falls in love with him.

  • A FUN, HISTORICAL NOVEL

I found all the historical aspects of the book interesting and it was fun to learn more about the history of California, specifically Angels Camp, and about olives. I did like how the authors kept reinforcing Scripture throughout the story, and how their characters continued to remind themselves of God’s Sovereignty in their lives. If you’re looking for a good, clean, romantic, murder mystery book, pick up Beyond the Silence.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BY TRACIE PETERSON AND KIMBERLY WOODHOUSE

Despite the familiarity in plot, I enjoyed this book. The setting of the olive grove was refreshing, and the town of Angel Camp’s suspicion of father Woodward Colton in the murder of his wife presents ample opportunities for lessons about gossip and misjudgment. Like Peterson’s first novels I read, the villain in this book is REALLY, REALLY villainous, made even more apparent by the juxtaposition of his actions and thoughts with those of his brother Harry, a clearly simple minded young man whose past has been filled with mistreatment and cruelty by everyone except his mother. When Harry stumbles upon Lillian and young Jimmy, the book takes a turn that makes it refreshing and redeeming.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

I really like Christian novels, but I do not like those that are “preachy”.

I thought that this book was interesting and the story line moved quickly. This novel did have sections that I thought were a little too intensely sermonizing or moralizing. While I agree with what was written, I thought these sections were a little long and took away from the story.

The power of silence over spoken words was a strong message of this book. One I need to learn. The description of things and people came alive and was well written. All in all this was a good read.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes Christian Novels.

  • THE POWER OF SILENCE OVER SPOKEN WORDS

Peterson and Woodhouse did a splendid job in weaving a character in Woody Colton, owner of an olive grove, who is kind and just to his workers but has developed the habit of not forgiving himself for every harm that comes in his family’s way. The authors gave birth to a character with just about the right balance of brusqueness and tenderness. Woody Colton is a representative of every human being who struggle to reconcile two different sides and constantly fought internal wars. Hope is not extinguished as this character brought about the redeeming value of humankind in forgiving oneself and fully accepting God’s presence in their lives.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

BEYOND THE SILENCE starts with a bang and doesn’t let up all the way through the book. Colton’s wife is brutally murdered and everyone believes Colton did it. His son has not spoken a word since the day his mama died. And Colton is shunned by his own town. Virtually run out when he dares go to the store for supplies. But the real murderer is still free and will stop at nothing to get what he’s after.

Somewhat predictable, Lillian is almost too perfect, but Colton was real and my heart hurt for him.

A historical suspense that will hold fans of both Peterson and Woodhouse captivated and enthralled, page after page. A winning team of authors.

With Peterson’s long acknowledged expertise with historical novels and Woodhouse’s obvious skill at suspense, this novel kept me spellbound until its conclusion.

The characters in Beyond the Silence were excellent. Even the bad guy was well defined. I liked everything about Lillian – her determination, her feistiness, and zest for live, but I especially liked her ability to see people for who they really were and her acceptance of those much different from herself. Beyond the Silence was a very compelling story full of sadness, danger, rumors, gossip, hope, and romance. I couldn’t help but read this one quickly as I continually wanted to know what was happening next.

The authors did a great job of expressing the emotions that the characters were feeling in a very realistic way. The attraction between Lillian and Woody was also very well written. I felt sorry for Jimmy and all of the trauma he had seen, as well as the fear he felt. Of course, I was a bit frustrated that he kept silent for so long, but it completely made sense.

  • BOOK REVIEW: ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BY TRACIE PETERSON AND KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE

Ms. Peterson and Ms. Woodhouse are in top form. From the very beginning this is an exciting read and it gets more exciting as you go on. Did Woodward Colton murder his wife? Both Mrs. Goodman and Jimmy received trauma from the murder and Lillian has to work with both of them to bring about healing. She also has to work with Woody to clear his name. However there is someone who doesn’t want that to happen. I like Lillian and Woodward and their budding romance. This is a fun read, it is a fast read, however I do not recommend starting this book late at night because it will cost you sleep as you will not want to put it down. Ms. Peterson and Ms. Woodhouse are excellent writers and know how to twist your nerve endings as they tighten the suspense. I recommend this book highly.

  • ANOTHER WINNER FOR FANS OF CHRISTIAN WESTERN ROMANCES!

I love this premise because as we know there are always two sides to every story and quite often people are willing to believe what they want instead of listening to the truth. My favorite is always Tracie and Kimberley’s strong willed and determined female characters who have a whole lot of gumption to dig in and not let others run rough shod over them but still keeps them feminine charm and beauty. This is what draws me to these novels is the adventure you find yourself on that moves the story forward and never becomes stagnant or even predictable even though you know in the end, romance will ensue, it doesn’t come easily. This is why I love Tracie Peterson’s novels and this one just finds its home next to my growing collection in my own personal library. This one gains a perfect 5 stars

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BY TRACIE PETERSON & KIMBERLY WOODHOUSE, HISTORICAL ROMANCE [REVIEW & GIVEAWAY]

The collaborative writing of prolific authors Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse has brought a moving story to the Christian historical fiction realm. Laced with gossip, fear, suspicions, the world of Angels Camp, California is fertile ground for people to turn their backs on a family that is hurt and needful and living with intense sorrow.

  • REVIEW + GIVEAWAY: ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

I am impressed with this collaboration between Tracie and Kimberley. Rich in characterization, setting, suspense and plot, the combined skill set that Tracie and Kimberly bring to the table makes this a very entertaining and compelling read. Beyond the Silence has a strong spiritual theme, which I greatly appreciated in a time when many Christian fiction stories today are lacking in this area. There’s a contrast in words, between Jimmy’s self-imposed silence after witnessing something no child should ever see, and that of the townspeople’s quick judgement, brash condemnation and gossip. The story’s much-needed message about the power of our words – for good or evil, to bless or hurt – gives much to think about. Recommended.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

I love that Lillian is a strong character in this book, as she sets out to make a life for herself as a nanny. Right away, she was a character that is like able and well written! When she finds that her job is shrouded in mystery and danger, she takes it on with courage.

I like the mystery and historical aspects of this novel. The authors did a wonderful job of keeping the story moving and making the reader feel like you are right there. If you are looking for a new historical read, then I highly recommend this one!

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BY TRACIE PETERSON

Tracie Peterson’s newest book Beyond the Silence is a fast-paced adventure story you won’t want to miss. The action doesn’t stop – both the emotional and the dangerous varieties. I loved the way that the mix of characters reacted with each other to keep the drama level high. The crime is violent and harsh, but Lillian’s sweetness tempers that nicely, keeping the story safely in the adventure and not the high crime category.

. . . I liked Lillian from the first page right through the end of the book, but I was an even bigger fan of Woody because I felt so sorry for him and his son Jimmy.

  • ENJOYABLE READ

Beyond the Silence is a really enjoyable read, and I recommend it for those who love a historical set in the late 1800s and who appreciate a romance with a good mystery/suspense thread.

A strength in Beyond the Silence is the way the characters and setting jumped into my mind fully formed. The descriptions centered me in the locale and I was there with Lillian. Each character also had depth: they weren’t mere cutouts put on the scene to fill space. Instead, they had pain and joy, they were sympathetic (except the villain) and real. There are subplots that added dimensions to the story as well. There also were the mysterious elements that kept the pages turning — I wouldn’t call the first half suspenseful, but the pace did build.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

It is this history that is brought to the forefront of the story as the novel progresses. We learn more about the past and how it is woven into the future. We watch our characters grow in emotional and spiritual strength as they cling together in order to make it through the most difficult times that they have ever faced. Beyond The Silence was a fantastic story from start to finish, that I just could not (and did not want to!) put down.

The main character Lillian, is a strong character in this book and knows how to stay focused on the job and take pride in what she does. She didn’t give up on her charge Jimmy or his dad even when things got intense.

Although readers will know right away who the killer is, it doesn’t detract from the book or make the story line predictable.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

I really had a fun time with this book. The characters were very realistic, down to Darwin, the evil dude. Harry, Darwin’s brother, was such a delight and I loved reading the parts that included him. Most authors shy away from characters with mental issues but these authors handled it head on and created a character who was easy to love. His innocence and delight in the little things just made me want to hug him. The cook and housekeeper, Mrs. Goodson, was also a favorite. And last, but not least, there were Woody and Lily. Seeing the devotion Woody had for his olives, the love that Lily had for little Jimmy, and the friendship that brought them both together was beautiful. My only complaint? The ending seemed a bit rushed but I loved every minute of this book nonetheless. Excellent read!

While I’m not very familiar with Kimberly Woodhouse’s writings, I have read several novels by Tracie Peterson, so I was excited to read Beyond the Silence last week. I was hooked into this intriguing mystery right from the intense prologue. The authors did a really great job creating an interesting plot, a likable main character and gripping descriptions. Overall, I enjoyed reading Beyond The Silence and I recommend it other readers.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

I really liked Mrs. Goodman, and how she and Lillian studied the bible together, encouraging Woody to join them. One of my favorite characters was Harry, a kind man who befriends Jimmy. Many people are mean to Harry, including his own brother Darwin, who I disliked and didn’t like spending so much time reading about him.Overall, a great read. A little slow to start, but as it picks up the tension mounts. I learned alot in this book and thought it was interesting that table olives were only beginning to be popular in 1890. Good relationships, and friendships throughout.

  • DANGER IN THE SHADOWS- A REVIEW OF ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

The dramatic opening scene of Beyond the Silence immediately kindles questions.. questions that will linger unresolved until the very last. And yes, there’s tension, action, uncertainty.. But more than that, it’s a story that is lightened by the interactions of the believable, endearing, and sometimes quirky, characters and their roles in the unfolding drama.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ REVIEW

This is a story full of emotion, especially when you read the little boy’s version of events. The reader knows why he can’t speak. It is a story full of suspense, because the reader also knows what the attacker is thinking throughout the story – and who it is.You are just waiting for everyone else to figure it out! And of course it has some romance in it, as Lillian and Colton fall in love. I think this story was great. It kept my attention and I couldn’t wait to find out how everything was brought together in the end.

  • REVIEW: ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ BY TRACIE PETERSON AND KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE

Beyond the Silence drew me in from the very beginning. Believable, well-developed characters tug on your heartstrings. They’ve been through so much already, and yet problems continue to stack against them seemingly at every turn. Fear, anger, and worry are normal reactions, but each one will have to reach deeper as they work through their pain and grief…

Beyond the Silence is a wonderful story of hope and healing, definitely recommended for historical fiction fans!

  • SATISFYING READ

So many characters in Beyond the Silence were the victims of abuse. The faith element in this plot was gently prodded throughout the tale. Although I enjoyed the book, it was sometimes difficult to follow along because the book was written from several different perspectives. Multiple points of view can be illuminating, but it’s also confusing when there are too many things going on. It’s kind of like watching a movie that keeps switching scenes just when you’re getting the gist of the situation. Still, it’s a satisfying read that will appeal to many Christian fiction readers.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’ – TRACIE PETERSON AND KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE

I have no idea what the title brings to your mind as you read it. I thought it might be something beyond the grave, but really was not expecting the level of suspense that the authors Tracie and Kimberley brought to this historical fiction novel. I truly disappeared into the story and was lost in it for the two days it took me to read it! Many times as I read with bated breath to find out what would happen next I had to remind myself this IS a novel, it is fiction, and I am not in the middle of it, and neither are my friends! That lasted only until the next scene! Even my 89 year old mother loved it, and read it in short order. I loved Lillian, and I think it was because she was so patient and understanding with her young charge, Jimmy. She also did not believe all the rumors that she heard, and gave the family the benefit of the doubt as she tried to help them.

  • A GOOD BOOK FOR A SNOWY/RAINY DAY INSIDE

I have enjoyed Tracie’s books and was happy that I got the chance to review this book for her. Both authors capture from the first page with the characters they chose to write about. They did a good job with developing the characters and making them come off the page. The descriptions of the scenes were also well done and you felt as if you could see what the author was talking about. I liked how they really made you feel as if you were back in time. There is also an element of suspense in this story which adds to the story line. Their writing style makes this book very easy to read quickly. It is one of those books that you can put down as you want the story to continue on. I really liked how Lillian worked with the little boy to try to get him to speak again. She was a gentle loving person to him. It had to be hard for her to leave her family to go become a nanny but I feel she made the right decision for her life after all is said and done. I highly recommend this book for a day of reading on a cold winter day.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

I love historical novels and this one had me entranced from the very beginning.

Lillian’s strong character and faith in God was inspiring. The way she won the hearts of Jimmy, Woodward and Mrs Goodman in a short time with her sensitivity and sensible outlook is very charming. How God works through her to bring healing to them and to Harry, the brother of the villain is wonderful. In turn, their love and faith in her brings healing to Lillian of the pain she feels when her grandfather severs ties with her.

The underlying message of how gossip can lead to so much evil and cause people to be disheartened and ostracized is very powerful.

The story was emotionally appealing and the characters and plot kept me engaged until the end.

  • ‘BEYOND THE SILENCE’

Beyond the Silence, written by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse is a beautifully written book. Set in Angel’s Camp, California, which is a real location, the well-researched description of the area and the area’s merchants gives this novel its appeal. I thought that this book was extremely interesting and the story line kept moving quickly. I really like Christian novels, but am not a fan of those which seem to be “preachy”. This novel did have sections that I thought were a little too intensely sermonizing or moralizing. While I agree with what was written, I thought these sections were a little long and took away from the story. I received a print copy of this book from LitFuse Publicity in return for my honest review.
