Ann dreams of a marriage proposal from her poetic suitor, Eli-until Will Hanby shows her that nobility is more than fine words.

Ann travels to Pittsburgh, accompanying her father on business. There she meets Will Hanby, a saddle-maker’s apprentice. Will has spent years eking out an existence under a cruel master and his spirit is nearly broken. But Ann’s compassion lights a long-dark part of his soul. Through his encounters with Ann’s father, a master saddler, Will discovers new hope and courage in the midst of tremendous adversity.

When the Millers must return to Ohio and their ministry there, Will resolves to find them, at any cost. If Will can make it back to Ann, will she be waiting?

Holly at 2 Kids and Tired Books With themes that include slavery and the Underground Railroad, indenture, abuse and cruel masters, this should be a heavy story.  Fortunately, it’s also tempered with good people who genuinely care for one another and who look out for those in need.  The result is a fascinating story about the indomitable spirit and resilience of men and women who are able to rise above their adversity and discover courage, fortitude and hope. Enthralling and suspenseful, Fairer than Morning is a terrific debut novel from a promising author.  I look forward to the rest of the trilogy.

Alena at Little Bit Of Wonderful I absolutely loved Fairer Than Morning, and easily give it five stars! Rosslyn Elliott is a talented writer who brings her characters to life on the page. The thing I loved most about this novel is how Will Hanby actually acts like a young man being abused at the hands of a violent master. Few authors have nailed this mindset so well as Elliott, and while it was very painful to read, it was incredibly moving! Will faced choices that seemed impossible, and made the best ones he could, and faced the consequences with moving faith.

Jami’s Reviews A story that tugs your heartstrings, keeps your nails short (because you’ll chew them off in anticipation!!), and leaves you loving the main characters. I love when I finish reading a book with a love of the characters, and this is exactly what has happened for me. Excellent story. Excellent drama. Excellent characters. The only thing more I could ask would be for the story to continue!!

Tara at Ramblings of the Blonde Mother Bear Sometimes the hype of a new novel fails to materialize once you dive into the pages. But occasionally, the story and characters actually live up to the expectations. The story is well crafted, beautifully written and unpredictable, with fleshed-out characters. I enjoyed the journey and personal growth of the characters.

Book Reviews By Jenny What a novel to debut with! I read it for a blog tour and although the book is somewhat long at 387 pages she writes with an almost poetic feel to the novel. The imagery that her novel produces is beautiful. She paints pictures with her words in this moving novel. A suspenseful end. The issue of slavery and murder are touched on several times in this novel. Deep seated emotions are richly portrayed throughout the entire book. I have to say again just a beautiful, moving book! Big thumbs up to Rosslyn!

Beckie at By The Book I appreciated the well-drawn characters, the historical research and the subject of bondage that Rosslyn Elliott so skillfully sets forth in this debut novel. And I am anxious to find out the rest of the story as it unfolds in the next books. An added bonus to this series is that the main characters actually lived! I love an historical novel with its foundation in fact.  Pick up Fairer Than Morning; I think you’ll love it. Recommended.

Laurie Here Reading and Writing Reviews The historical part of this story turns out to be very true and is based on a true family. The Author did a great job of character development and wrote the story with reading ease and intrigue. This is a great debut author you don’t want to miss! Again, if you enjoy this type of genre, I would HIGHLY suggest this book!

Lisa at Heritage Homestead and Homeschool Academy I loved Fairer Than Morning. With meticulous detail, and rich description, Ms. Elliot weaves a beautiful love story worth reading a second time. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Coranne at Short and Sweet Rosslyn Elliot is a debut author with this novel about a saddler and his family in 1826.  I have to say, I thought this was a well paced and action packed book. I couldn’t put it down!  I loved reading about the Pittsburgh area (being a PA girl) and really got into reading about a saddler and his family.

Reviews  By Jane I was a little apprehensive about reading this book. The first reason being its a Christian Romance, which I often find myself disappointed with, and secondly that its a debut novel. But it looked so good and I was eager to try out a new author so I dove in with great expectation, and boy was I surprised! I was immediately enraptured by this beautiful, unique tale about two struggling souls whose lives intersect and change them forever. Not only was I amazed at the excellent writing, but I also was stunned to find out how much of the events in the book, along with the characters, were actually historically accurate. The personality Rossyln built into these characters made me totally fall in love with them.

Aprils Lifestyle Show I could not put this book down. It is an excellent period book.

Reviews By Molly Rosslyn Elliot is a wonderfully talented author! I can’t begin to tell you how deeply this novel moved me. This author took emotional turmoil of an apprentice who’s master is a mean and cruel hearted man, mixed it with the emotions of a young lady seeking to find God’s will and the man of dreams, and gave us a novel that will not only take your breath away, it will sweep you away into a place in history that so many tend to forget.

Nicole Wyoming Girl *turned* Coastie Wife Fairer Than Morning was one of the most interesting books I’ve read recently. One of the things that I really enjoyed about it is that it was far from cookie-cutter, which is really hard to do in a historical romance! The characters were deep, multi-facted, and the story line was very unpredictable and kept throwing twists and surprises at you. Her delving into the darkness of grief and abuse was also rare and unusal in a Christian romance, and there was even a bit of a scandal in it. Everything got so complicated I was at a point in the book where I was saying to myself, “I don’t know if I’ll like this book because I don’t know HOW everything could possibly be resolved in a way that I would like by the end!” Rosslyn pulled it off quite nicely, however!

Kim at Window To My World This is a spectacular debut novel! The characters are well developed, the plot draws you in immediately and captures your imagination, and the plot – has many unexpected and satisfying twists that you will never see coming! This makes for a fantastic read! I know that I will be looking forward to any novel with Rosslyn Elliott’s name on the cover!

Amber at Snidbits I really enjoyed this book! It has action and romance. Elliott threw in a few twists to keep it interesting and I finished it feeling satisfied with how things turned out.

Kris at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers I couldn’t believe it when I learned that Fairer Than Morning is Rosslyn Elliott’s debut novel. She has knocked the ball out of the park with this historical romance! I loved it.

Joy at Splashes of Joy Wow, what a wonderful debut book for author Rosslyn Elliott!! Fairer Than Morning is Historical Christian Fiction at its very best! With the beautiful cover and the title, I was expecting a light read, but I was soon to find out different. This story is so full of mystery, suspense, endurance, action, love and unbelievable forgiveness the reader is captured until the very last word! If you like historical fiction, this is a Must Read for you! I am so looking forward to Rosslyn Elliott’s next book in this series coming in 2012.

Jill at Book, Books Everywhere This book gave a very real feeling and once I started reading it I had a hard time putting it down.

Jenny at Come Meet Ausjenny The story grabbed me from the first page and got better as it went on. This book is so much more than a inspirational romance yes there is the romance in the story but it deals with so much more. There are sub stories that are important to the whole story. There were times when I really felt for the characters. I am eagerly awaiting book two in this series as I want to know what happens next.

Carrie Our Blessed Chaos Dramatic and inspiring! An intriguing novel from a new author!  It is so well written that I was surprised that this is her first novel!   The imagery in this book was exceptional and I could easily visualize the historic surroundings as the story dramatically unfolded. I found the storyline to be so suspenseful at times that I could not put it down.  How fun it is to read a historical Christian romance that keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Laura at Lighthouse Academy A heart-breaking story of love, loss, and cruelty.

Faith at Hope & Cherry Tea Beside a cover that warms my heart the story within that cover is a heart stealer! Real characters with struggles, flaws, and failures that are deftly drawn.

Janet at Along the Way The life of the Miller family and their chosen profession as saddle-makers was very enlightening, and it is hard to believe that this is Rosslyn Elliott’s debut novel.  She has done an incredible job of bringing this time in history to life.

Annette at Net’s Book Notes I love finding a fresh voice in Christian fiction. This is an historical, an author, to read. You won’t regret it. One of the strongest novels of the year, in my opinion. Very well done. Highly recommended.

Patricia at Dream a little dream

Elana at The Twinners Reviews & Giveaways The plot will hook you in from the first page, and you will delight in watching Ann fall in love. But the story isn’t all about Ann and her romance…it’s also about Will’s journey as an apprentice, how he comes to meet Ann in the first place and how he finds her in the end. The mysteries surrounding the characters will intrigue you, and you will come to love each and every one of them by the end. The best part is that this book is actually based on a true story! If you love mystery and romance, then this book is for you! I am sure you will enjoy it just as much as I did.

Ruth at Thoughts from a princess This book was a Dickens like romance. Each chapter seemed to uncover another clue into the lives of these characters. If you enjoy Christian romance from a historical perspective, you’ll enjoy reading this book.

Whitney at Rambles of a SAHM This is a wonderful new series. Rosslyn Elliott’s writing style is fast paced and descriptive. The subject matter is heart wrenching. It is told in a graphic enough way to put you right in the scene but still not be vulgar. I absolutely fell in love with these characters and I can’t wait to read the second installment.

Sarah at Growing For Christ Wow! Rosslyn Elliott is a debut author and I can’t recommend this book enough, this book had me gripped from the get go and I almost stayed up all night to finish, but after the last time doing that, realized it wasn’t a good idea.  Whether it’s because the author is a fellow home school mom or the fact that the story takes place in Ohio during the early 1800′s, I’m not sure but I must say that I was hooked and am excitedly waiting to see more from this author.

9/11

Cindy’s Reviews This novel was full of twists and turns, your interest was peaked as each turn in the story revealed more of Ms Elliot’s writing talent.  I truly enjoyed this book, and wait with eager anticipation for the next book in The Saddler’s Legacy series. 4 stars.

Kristen at Read Great Fiction This book is a wonderful debut novel from Rosslyn Elliott.  It is well written and researched and makes for a delightful read.  If you enjoy historical romance, you will love this book.  5 Stars

Lisa at A Casual Reader’s Blog One thing I found interesting was how the author was able to show very good examples of bad people using Bible versus to support their twisted beliefs. The historical story is absolutely fascinating.

Mel’s World with Melissa Mashburn What an incredible start to what is sure to be an amazing career in Christian Fiction, Rosslyn Elliott’s breakout novel Fairer Than Morning was everything I could have dreamed of in a romance adventure and then some. The characters were rich with history, depth and drama and the historical aspect of their story makes it even more exciting. This first book in The Saddler’s Legacy has set the bar high for the books to follow. I can’t wait for my girlfriends to get a copy and see what they have to say about it too!

Meg at Meg Massey’s Writings and Wanderings  Often suspenseful, this tale provides a deep look into the lives of the indentured, and the cruelties they often endured under harsh masters. This historical drama also reminds us that with God, there is always hope, even in the presence of great darkness.

Lydia at The Overweight Bookshelf I was expecting a sweet historical romance, but instead I found a gritty tale of indentured servanthood, fleeing slaves, duels, bounty hunters, and murder. Fairer Than Morning is a historically rich novel that has at its heart themes from Nicholas Nickleby and Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Rosslyn’s writing is elegant and emotive-high drama scenes are counter balanced with poetic excerpts and lyrical conversations. The romance between Will and Ann does not become a major plot contender until the last quarter of the book. It was not this element that continually drew me into this story, but Will’s journey from physical and emotional bondage to freedom that kept my attention riveted to the page. Will’s enslavement to a cruel master is all the more gut wrenching since this is based on a true story.

Page by Paige 5 out of 5 stars. This debut novel by Rosslyn Elliot is a fantastic addition to Christian Romance, with all the elements of a truly beautiful story. While I wasn’t sure about this new author, I soon found myself caught up in Will an Ann’s story, not even able to put it down! The story was well researched, and the fact that it was based on real people in a fictional way was very neat, and dare I say….Awesome

Melissa at Bibliophile’s Retreat Elliot has penned an entrancing first novel that draws readers into the lives of characters they are hesitant to part with as the last page is closed. The language and writing describes events and emotions so that I have experienced them as if I were the one in the story rather than an onlooker via the page the author has constructed for me to read. As I read I am left wondering in each situation how I would face it were I the one to encounter such treatment or decisions in my own life.

Courtney’s Chitter Chatter As soon as you start reading Fairer than Morning you are swept in to the two stories that get woven together. I was amazed at the amount of emotions that I felt throughout this story. Rosslyn Elliott has a gift of eliciting deep emotions through her characters. Spiritually, Fairer Than Morning, had me trying to investigating my tendencies to judge others. Entertaining and engaging and I would highly recommend it.

Brooke at I blog 4 books What a treat to discover a new author that I love!Rosslyn Elliott’s debut novel Fairer than Morning is absolutely fantastic! Much deeper than many books in the same genre, Elliott addresses serious topics and issues of morality and character. Best of all, she points readers to a relationship with Christ to help them through tough situations. I loved the characters of Ann and Will. I highly recommend Fairer than Morning and look forward to reading the remaining books in The Saddler’s Legacy series!!

9/13

Dani at Elle in Organic Shoes  Elliott has crafted a marvelous tale that will keep you glued to the pages. An excellent debut book and introduction to the Saddler’s Legacy. I cannot wait to see what else Rosslyn Elliott has hidden up her sleeve!

Julee at Mommy’s Memorandum This book really touched me. It is a gripping story of courage and the price of freedom as the reader feels the unspeakable cruelties William Hanby suffers. His body is broken, bruised and batter and his spirit a dying flicker. It’s the Miller family who bring new hope and light to William. The path to his freedom is dangerous, however he has much to live for as he rediscovers forgiveness, faith and love.

Kendra at Happily Managing a Household of Boys AMAZING and WONDERFUL are the 2 words that come to mind about this book. I was sooo into the book that I couldn’t put it down and didn’t put it down until I was done. I read the book in about 5 hours and I completely enjoyed the book. I really felt the characters come alive in the book and the theme in the book was very well written. The book contains many “historcial” markers such as slavery, the author touches on those topics with grace and compassion for that time period. Fairer then Morning is the first book in Series and I will be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series! EXCELLENT book and a must read, especially if you really enjoy Historical Fiction!

Faith at Labor Not in Vain Fairer than Morning is a rare book, eloquently written, that effortlessly takes you back to another time and place. Reading this book was an absolute pleasure! It was written in such a way that all I wanted to do was sit back and soak in every word, not rushing through to find out what happens on the next page, but simply enjoying the one I was on. And that my friends, is rare. This book was magnetic!

Jill at Frugal Plus This story deals with the real time issues of slavery, compassion, courage, and forgiveness. The author Shows us love, hope, and finding faith in even the worst of situations.  You will enjoy this Inspiring Read!

Vera at Luxury Reading From the cover of Fairer than Morning, I was expecting a typically quaint Christian historical romance. Although there’s nothing wrong with quaint romances, I was happy to discover that I was very wrong. Set in 19th-century Ohio, Fairer than Morning paints a vivid picture of the wide chasm that existed between the have and have-nots in the industrial age, the tensions between the Northern and Southern states, and the people who worked to sustain the Underground Railroad. Fairer than Morning is a Christian historical romance, but Rosslyn Elliott’s engaging writing and painstaking research into the period – the story is based on real people and events – make it so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed Elliott’s debut novel and look forward to the next installment in A Saddler’s Legacy series, Sweeter than Birdsong.

Kemi at Homemaking Organized Blog Fairer Than Morning is a great read. Full of details that have you picturing a Dicken’s novel (as one reviewer put it) the fact that it is based on a historical family makes it that much more.

9/15

Becky at Christian Chick’s Thoughts I found that I couldn’t stop reading.  Fairer Than Morning is much more than what the cover implies, and I’d argue that Will is actually the focus of the story, not Ann. Will is an incredibly believable character, and the abuse he faced at the hands of Master Good was heart wrenching. Will is the heart and soul of this story, and I can’t wait for his family’s journey to continue in book two!

Angela at All Grown Up? Rosslyn Elliot shocked the daylights out of me! I was able to get into Fairer Than Morning right off the bat, no trudging through the first chapter trying to get to know the book and decide if it was worth my trouble or not! I was intrigued right away. She brought in a topic I had never really paid any attention to in the past, the child slavery that went on in the early days of our country. It was all covered by “apprenticeships” but it basically boiled down to child slavery. I immediately felt empathy for Will Hanby wanting to see him over come his rough beginning in life and see his happy ending! Ann Miller touched me as the daughter who gave everything to make sure her sisters and Father were taken care of and loved. This being Rosslyn Elliot’s first novel, she has set the bar high for her future endeavors!

Donna at Books and Such I loved this book. There was a lot going on with the characters, lots of activity and emotion, and I really got to know them. My heart broke in places and sang in others. This book will make a wonderful gift for any reader, and book groups will enjoy discussing it.

Mindy at A Room Without Books Is Empty A great start to a new series.

9/16

Carrie at Farming On Faith This book was such a great read! I loved it! The story of Ann and Will. This book drew me in from the first line.

Kathleen at Bags, Books & Bon Jovi I read this book with the knowledge that, even though the “characters” are long gone… they really aren’t. They live on in their descendants today. It has to be pretty cool to have a family history (even fictionalized as Fairer Than Morning) that readers, like me, can appreciate as a work of fiction but to family members bring their personal history alive. Excited for the sequel.

Kat at Reviews From The Heart LOVED it. The storyline was one I hadn’t heard of before with indentured servants in the early 1800’s. It’s hard to imagine how poor people would jump at opportunities to learn a trade only to have people take advantage of them and the court system ruling in favor on the contractual agreements. Will’s character is exceptional despite all he has endured, he still is willing to look at helping others as a way to escape his own fate. I award this one a 5 out of 5 stars and look forward to the rest of the books to follow in The Saddler’s Legacy series.

Tracy‘s Treasure of Books This story has many twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages til these two finally find their way to each other. Their’s is a sweet and tender romance, but one filled with alot of history binding their tale and lives together. Come into their story as life’s circumstances, such as slavery, abolition, runaways, faith, and love find the way into weaving this wonderful tale.

9/17

Alexia at The Mommy Rambles Will won my heart over right away and Ann soon after; following their journey as they freed themselves from life and finally discovered who they were and what they wanted to become. This is Rosslyn’s first novel and I think she did a fantastic job! I will definitely keep an eye out for her next book!

Amber at Seasons of Humility Complex and well-written debut novel!

Lauren at 5minutesforbooks.com Rosslyn Elliott uses the historical facts from the lives of Will and Ann to craft an engaging story that involves romance, friendship, suspense, and forgiveness. Fairer than Morning includes fascinating details about the difficult living conditions in industrial cities in the early 1800′s, as well as insight into the realities of the Underground Railroad and indentured servanthood. For fans of historical fiction, Fairer than Morning is the beginning of a series that promises to be entertaining and enlightening. I enjoyed this touching story, and I look forward to the next book in the The Saddler’s Legacy Series.

Megan at The Joys of Life I absolutely loved Mrs. Elliott’s book.  I can’t wait for the second book to come out.  Her style of writing was wonderful and I found it hard to put this book down.  Despite it being a bigger book, it took me a shorter time to read it!  If you are looking for a book to read, add this one to your list.  You won’t be disappointed.

Stacie at Hobbit Door I truly enjoyed this book. It had a great story line and all the pieces were woven together very well. I always enjoy a story that can make you think without being preachy. This book makes you think about who you are and who is your faith in? Who are you when push comes to shove and your life is on the line? Do you preserve your life at any cost or do you do what’s right? Is what’s right for one also the same right for someone else?  I love that the story can involve these thoughts and points but not get bogged down by them. It is also a very sweet love story. Then there are several beautiful families contrasted by those who choose evil. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

9/19

Lori at Frog’s Lilypad The story is well written. It is absolutely a little gem!

Britni at Book Nook Club I really enjoyed the writing and the history behind this novel.

Ariel at The Librarian’s Bookshelf

Patty at Broken Teepee This is a really interesting historical novel taking on a variety of difficult topics including runaway slaves, class differences, indentured servitude and religion. I found it to be a fascinating read about a time in our history about which I know little. Ms. Elliot brings both the rural countryside and the gritty city alive with her descriptive writing. Her love story builds slowly and truly and it fits the time. I will look forward to the future books in this series.

Rachel’s Blog I started reading and loved the writing!

Tammy Is Blessed This book dealt with a lot of heavy subject matter (abuse, the Underground Railroad, slavery, forgiveness, etc), but it was handled in a compassionate, yet realistic way. The characters are very well-developed and their reactions, thoughts, words and actions are realistic (iow, they don’t always make the right choices). Excellent drama, incredibly moving storyline, captivating characters and a plot that turns out to be based on a true story and true characters – incredible! This was Elliott’s debut novel – I look forward to reading a lot more from this author!

Lisa Jordan Books From the first page, Rosslyn’s beautiful writing kept me turning pages.
