Come Empty: Pour Out Life’s Hurts and Receive God’s Healing Love (SonRise Devotionals, March 2015)

When a water vessel is filled with dirt and stones, it cannot be used to quench a thirst.

But, when this vessel is emptied, there is an opportunity to fill it until it overflows with fresh, cool, life-giving water. Water that quenches. Refreshes. Soothes.

Our souls are the same: filled with fear, doubt, and disappointment. Running over with unanswered prayers and lingering questions. When we empty the mess of our lives in the presence of God, we’re offered an invitation to come. An invitation that allows us to come empty – so that we can be filled until we overflow.

Come Empty: Pour Out Life’s Hurts and Receive God’s Healing Love guides you through fifty days of experiencing the fullness of God’s love and His ability to overcome life’s hurts. Each day, you will receive assurance of God’s presence in your difficult situations. • BOOK REVIEW: ‘COME EMPTY’ BY SAUNDRA DALTON-SMITH

Ms. Dalton-Smith has given us a devotional that is designed to put down the hurt and pick up God’s healing for that hurt. Ms. Dalton-Smith has grouped her devotional into eight sections: Relationship With God, Relationship With Others, Negative Emotions, Identity, Change, Illness, Emotions, and Gratitude. We all get hurt in one of those categories this devotional is designed to help us allow God to heal our wounds. At the end of each chapter there are Going Deeper Questions and then a Simple Prayer. I believe this book is a resource that will be used over and over again. I also think it is a great gift to give to friends and family who might be hurting as well.

  • LITFUSE PRESENTS ‘COME EMPTY’ DEVOTIONAL BY SANDRA DALTON-SMITH

Come Empty by Saundra Dalton-Smith is a not just a devotional, it is a book that will help you deal with the hurts, fear, doubts and any other emotion that is strangling you and keeping you from living you life free in Jesus. Each devotion goes deep into your emotions and helps you deal with the root of the problem. Ms. Smith shares these special devotions from her heart, and helps us to start our own journey. And even though each of us will go this journey in our own way and in our own time, the end results are the same. We will be able to live our lives free of the things that pull us down. And I enjoy the way Ms. Smith shows us that nothing can happen without surrendering out lives to Christ Jesus.

Are you in a dark place emotionally? Are you dealing with guilt, hurt, brokeness and just want to push through it and come out of it full of healing? Well only through the hope that comes from Jesus Christ can one find full and true healing. And Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith walks through this journey through a devotional style book that will help anyone who reads it. It is a beautiful book for all those who are spiritually thirsty. The first half of the book is set up to help us be raw about where we are at and the second half shows us how to cling to Him who will guide us to complete healing. This book is for women of all ages, married or single. I love that each devotional has scripture and questions for reflection. This is a great resource for anyone dealing with difficult times and emotions.

This devotional is a wonderful one for anyone, but ti could not have come at a more perfect time for me. I have spent my last few years in a stagnant relationship with God, and this devotional moved me forward in a return to God – a true return, not a fake one. If anyone is feeling like they can’t fix the mess they’ve made themselves in Christianity, don’t give up before reading this devotional!

  • ‘COME EMPTY’ BRINGS YOU INTO GOD’S PRESENCE

Are you filled to the brim with fear, doubt, disappointment, frustration, anger, bitterness or even busyness? Do you have unanswered prayers and lingering questions hanging over you?

Saundra Dalton-Smith’s Come Empty offers 50 days of devotionals designed to guide you into the presence of God and be filled to overflowing. We can’t overflow with God’s peace and love until we empty ourselves of all of the mess in our lives–those things that fill us that God does not give us.

Each daily reading has an issue, God’s response, Scripture, “Going Deeper” questions and a simple prayer. If you desire, you can skip around to those days you feel are needed more on that particular day.

Chapter 2 discusses the 50 Day Jubilee Challenge which challenges you to let go of your pain and by spending extended time in God’s presence going through the daily devotionals and journaling through your experience. There are 80 days total and you can choose the 50 that pertain to your situation.

A much-needed resource for women today, Come Empty is an encouraging way to receive the reassurance of God’s love and be filled with the goodness of God rather than the darkness of the world.

  • ‘COME EMPTY’ – POUR OUT LIFE’S HURTS AND RECEIVE GOD’S HEALING LOVE – BOOK REVIEW

Come Empty is a profound book, filled with intense healing prayers that offers you the opportunity for a highly personal encounter with God.

If you follow the author’s recommendations, you will choose 50 of the 80 devotions/prayers and commit to a 50 day Jubilee challenge designed to bring deep healing into your life.

I believe that a powerful experience awaits those who participate in the challenge. What caught my attention was when the author asked:

What would happen if, for 50 days, you went deep into the places of your greatest pain? What would occur if, instead of coming with an agenda, a list, or a specific request, you came before God‘s presence, empty in anticipation of being filled?

I highly recommend this book to you!

  • ‘COME EMPTY,’ A DEVOTIONAL BY SAUNDRA DALTON-SMITH {A BOOK REVIEW}

Come Empty wasn’t what I expected, and that in and of itself speaks VERY highly of Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith’s authentic writing style! My reason for getting a copy of Come Empty was to read it and determine if it would be a good book for me to recommend to friends and women I mentor. So, it came as a bit of a surprise when to find I was drinking in the first few chapters for myself, fully relating to Dalton-Smith’s description of her life because I had been there. And, I needed her insight, reminders, and encouragement to recognize the need for me to continue to let go of self and daily turn to my Savior. Dalton-Smith writes in such a sweet and welcoming way–I truly believe any woman will be able to connect with this devotional and deepen her personal relationship with Christ.

  • ‘COME EMPTY: POUR OUT LIFE’S HURTS AND RECEIVE GOD’S HEALING LOVE’

Her topics are generally right on, and her understanding of the issues is generally excellent. She addresses single and married women in all stages of life, so her audience is pretty generalized. Her approach is to allow the reader to vent through the first section, and then to hear God through the second section. I generally like such a format.

However, I had mixed feelings about this book. While the content is excellent and useful for many of the women I minister to, the writing is flat. It was hard to pinpoint the weaknesses; it just lacked pizazz. I’m sure it will be useful for many women, especially those still struggling with the issues Dalton-Smith addresses.

  • ‘COME EMPTY’ TO A 50-DAY JUBILEE CHALLENGE

In order to do a proper review, I read several of the devotionals that start the process of coming empty into the Lord’s presence. Then I consulted the topical index at the back of the book to select a few that spoke directly to a specific issue I struggle with in my walk with God. And wham! Bang! The Lord caught me off-guard with one passage of scripture. It was innocuous enough, one I had quoted often to myself and to others struggling with the same issue. But when I read the context and personalized it . . . Well, it was exactly what I needed.

This experience convinced me to complete the 50-day Jubilee challenge as set forth in Dr. Sandra Dalton-Smith’s Come Empty.

This world is not our home and there are hardships that batter the hulls of our ships until we are sinking, taking on more water from the storm than we can handle. • WHAT A BLESSING~

Wow and wow~ God is so good. This devotional came to me just when I needed it. Right, smack dab in the middle of a heavy trail~ I open my mailbox to find this devotional. Dr. Sandra Dalton-Smith is an internal medicine physician who has taken her experience with all kinds of illness from broken bones to broken hearts and writes Come Empty. It is written in short devotionals dealing with all kinds of issues~ 80 in total. It can be read in order or by topic.

Most times I review a book and then pass it on to someone I know that will enjoy it as much as I do. As you can see~ the minute I opened the book this was the first devotion I opened to. God spoke right to my heart. I felt like God had given Dr. Saundra just what I needed back when He gave her the message. When God led her to write this devotion ~ I know He had me in mind.

Each devotion touched my heart and encouraged healing to my weary mind and soul. I want to personally thank you, Dr. Saundra, for listening to the Holy Spirit as you pinned these devotions for the empty. You have been a blessing to me in more ways than one.

  • ‘COME EMPTY’ BOOK REVIEW

If you are going through a difficult or painful season Saundra’s book will give you encouragement to move forward. Saundra beautifully articulates the hurts that our hearts endure as we walk through this life. She writes as one who has endured times of pain and suffering.

This 80 day devotional breaks down the struggles of this life (one topic each day). After pouring out how one’s heart hurts with each trial Saundra shares how our Heavenly Father speaks to our heart. Scripture, going deeper questions, and a prayer finishes up each devotion.

Saundra understand how one feels when enduring the darkness this world offers on a daily basis and gives hope and healing for a weary soul. I would recommend this 200+ page devotional for anyone walking through a difficult season of life.

I would give this devotional 4.5 stars

  • ‘COME EMPTY’

This book really speaks to the soul. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed and discouraged, letting issues in our lives clutter our lives, I know it is something that I struggle with and this book really addresses that and talks about working to empty those things out of your life over a period of 50 days. I like how the book broke into daily readings that were totally manageable and so very encouraging.

  • GOOD TRANSPARENCY

I loved the author’s use of personal experience and Scripture. However, I didn’t like her point on the conversation with Jesus, where it is in first person. It seemingly puts the words of His Reply on par with Scripture. Only Scripture is authoritative.

  • EASY-TO-PERSONALIZE DEVO SUITABLE FOR LENT—OR ANYTIME

One thing I knew: this year, I wanted to do Lent differently. The season of Lent comprises the 40 days prior to Easter, during which Christians traditionally meditate on Jesus Christ’s suffering and on our own repentance. In recent years, I’ve tended to rush through these six weeks until arriving, surprise!, at Resurrection Sunday–grateful for the celebration but unprepared to savor its wonder as I’m meant to. That’s why I said yes to Come Empty. The idea of emptying myself out of distractions first to make room for Jesus was (is) very appealing.

So did Come Empty meet my need? To a degree, yes. It got me meditating in the right direction, but it didn’t resonate in the way I’d hoped it would…

  • ‘COME EMPTY’ REVIEW

The devotions are very short and easy to fit into a typical day, even a very busy day. It is very likely that you will have no problem doing one of these every day. And you may want to read more than one at a time, which is what I ended up doing. I really liked these short devotions. The ones that were meaningful to me were very helpful, and I was able to send one of them that was specific about cancer to a friend of mine whose husband is going through chemo right now. This is a great book.

  • ‘COME EMPTY’

Come Empty is a five minute devotional for women who are weary and heavy-laden. Answering Christ’s call to come unto him and he will give you rest, the devotional book is based around this theme. This is not a Bible study book for those who hunger for the word and food, but this is a short conversational form, with “your heart’s cry” and “God’s answer” There is also a verse, discussion questions, a one sentence prayer and scripture to read so you can take it a little deeper if you wish. Journaling your thoughts is encouraged. Not exactly what I hoped for, I didn’t walk away feeling fed — mostly I was left disquieted. Some of the answers are feel good style, God answering what you want to hear. I disagreed with some of the “answers” but this is my opinion only.

  • ‘COME EMPTY’

I wanted to review this book because it sounded like me in some way. When I read pages 17~19 I was immediately curious. I was reading about myself…for the last few days it has been rough, but it is because I stopped caring and fell into a fog…So reading this really caught my eye…The woman at the well is me…….and Saundra hit the nail on the head…its like she knows me personally …and that’s why I liked this book! It is personal to me, someone understands what I go through and how I can overcome it with faith and trust in the Lord,God Almighty. The 50 day challenge is one I will complete and might do it again or share this with another person. Either way I have to say this book points to the answer for all things who is Jesus Christ . And that is the most important reason of all. There are no gimmicks here, no “you must pray this prayer” type book. Not preachy but teachy. All in all I would recommend this book to ANYONE who thinks they are stuck in the mud, or in a fog, or too busy and for many more reasons…Thank you Saundra for writing this book.

This is a 50 day experience that I believe you will want to return to time and time again. You choose the ones you feel best fit and be prepared to be moved. Each reading is transparent and emotional. What is an absolute standout to me is the Lord’s response. It’s obvious this was a Holy Spirit guided endeavor. That’s why I say Come Empty is an experience. It’s not just a book. I believe it is an anointed tool to bring comfort and healing to your life. However, it means you need to do more tha read. Like the book description, the author states this isn’t about whether you get an invitation. The question is, will you respond?
