Dragon Seed (New Growth Press, June 2017)

An angry teen, a desperate mother, a missing father, and a shadow lurking in the background.

Things were going from bad to worse for Nick and his family. Tempted to run away after yet another argument with his mom, Nick receives a handwritten, leather-bound copy of an old book—a family legend passed down to him from his great grandfather. The book, called Dragon Seed, leads Nick deep into his family’s history and introduces him to another angry young man who lived in the shadows (the shadows of the tombs). Like Nick, you’ll be shocked to discover where he fits in this story of epic proportions!

This page-turning, young adult fiction story invites older children and teens into the real-life struggles of Nick. But it also ushers them into an imaginative exploration of the life of the young man Jesus saved as he wandered through the tombs. Best-selling author Marty Machowski uses both stories to introduce the reality of spiritual warfare and how its shadows affect and change us.

Machowski, a trusted teacher for children of all ages, presents a thoroughly biblical view of spiritual warfare that emphasizes the importance of humility and dangers of pride. Teens will be drawn to the story of Nick and his struggles and will learn, as they read, to also identify the shadows in their own life and turn from them. While the biblical teaching is evident throughout the narrative of Dragon Seed, Machowski also includes a twelve-lesson Bible study at the end of the book to help teens ground their understanding of spiritual warfare on biblical principles.

Youth pastors, leaders, and parents will also want to explore with teens the small group study at the end of the book with its unique take on spiritual warfare that emphasizes the biblical theme of humility. This is a perfect book to read with a group and discuss together the implications of Nick’s struggles for their lives.

I appreciated the reality of drawing attention to spiritual warfare in this book. It is so important for all of us to be aware of. I also thought that Mr. Machowski did a great job of pointing out the error of pride.

I encourage parents to read this with their child and go through the Bible study together as a way to bond and work through their spiritual issues.

This is a good versus evil story plot as Nick’s very soul becomes a battlefield. Nick receives an old book that has been passed down from his great grandfather. The book, Dragon Seed opens up his family history and he finds an ancestor who like him was very angry. It’s quite intriguing. Nick struggles to come to terms with the lost of his father. He sees a avenue out of his pit that has dragged him down so low. Will Nick receive the only redemption we have through Jesus?

I’ve always loved Marty’s ability to communicate about all things theology and the Gospel – especially with kids and teens. This book is no different. He uses sanctified imagination to illustrate a tough topic. It is an engaging read at any level, for anyone. Definitely a winner.

I’m always on the lookout for good young adult fiction, and I appreciate even more when it comes from a Christian Worldview. Teens of all ages tend to read a fair amount of dystopian/fantasy literature these days. Well, you can’t get much more dystopian than a plot that includes spiritual warfare, but what a lot of folks may not understand it that it *isn’t* fantasy! I suspect that many of them don’t have a handle on the reality of the “shadows” in the background of their lives.

The metaphorical part of this story was deep and it made me think about what God has to deal with with humans and their sin. The main characters were realistic. I learned a bit about the Bible and Jesus from the Bible studies included. Overall it was a good story.

At first even though the book synopsis grabbed my attention, the cover did not really appeal to me. I thought my son might enjoy the book though, so I asked him if he would like to read it. However, he thought he would prefer to wait a while. Somehow, I ended up with the book anyhow and I am so glad I did. Not only, because I know my son is going to like it, but others I know will also benefit from this book, too.

If you are looking for a laugh out loud book for your child/teenager, then this isn’t quite the book for you. If you are looking for a fantabulously written book, that will leave them thinking over and over again, then yes. Definitely grab this book up. It’s not only for children/teens, but any adult who seeks a better relationship with God or who struggles with pride.

This is a story of the origins of the fall of man and the consequences of our own pride. Characters face downfalls and are relatable to today’s world. Pride is a seed that must be uprooted before it grows into a monster. I like how the author portrayed real life and entwined it with the spiritual realm. This is a story within a story that I think a lot of teens and adults alike will enjoy.

I would also recommend this book for its imaginative and entertaining storytelling, for its little plot twists and surprise ending. After the story, there is a 12-day devotional on how we can humble ourselves and not let pride enter our hearts. It provides examples of how pride is shown and Bible verses to remind people of its dangers and how to counteract the influence of pride in kids.

This captivating novel of the battle of good versus evil in real life will leave you wondering what’s next and will open your mind to the battles of the spiritual realm. I enjoyed the ensuing conflicts in the lives of the characters in both the Freemans’ history and current timeline struggles.

Dragon Seed is definitely a book kids will enjoy, and will hold their interest for sure. Though the story will be familiar to most, it is packaged in a totally different way than kids are used to hearing. This is a great way to get kids to read the Bible and get the important lessons from it they may otherwise overlook.

This is the first book of Mr. Machowski’s that I have read. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this story touched my heart and encouraged my mama heart. In the Dragon Seed he explains the war between Satan and God so clearly that a child could understand it, although I don’t recommend this book for anyone under ten.

I really like the way that as Nick reads the book, he begins to recognize the angry, rebellious thoughts that he has as dragon seeds. I think that helping kids to realize wrong thoughts and replace them with good ones goes a long way toward heart change and not just outward change of behavior.

I loved the imagery in the book. The shadows that the grandmother sees and recognizes at the beginning is really attention getting. The fact that it was set in a time period that is relatable while there is a story within the story was wonderful. The author did a great job with that. The way the story is written is an intriguing look at how Satan may have fallen. It certainly makes you think!

Dragon Seed hooked me from the very first word of the very first chapter. It was that good. It’s basically the Bible in a bystanders point of view, someone who was there, but didn’t know all the details. It was really really good.

Nick, the main characters is lost and angry. He feels like the world owes him everything and is quite disrespectful throughout the book. I love that it displays teenage rebellion, but I think it was a little extreme. Overall, this definitely wasn’t the read for me. However, I think it could help a struggling teen.

At first I didn’t know if I would enjoy reading Dragon Seed. I must say I was a little surprised. The Story and characters are introduced and relationships develop very well. I did find myself wanting to know more about the side story more than I did the main plot. Although there are two stories being told at one time it doesn’t confuse the reader. Machowski seamlessly switches from one story to the next.

This book was an incredible writing and compelling to read witch is full of imagination of the story and hearts have been stirred by its distinct message so creatively with the great story that had led to significant conversation about the awful-ness of rebellion against God and the dangers of letting the seed take root into our heart.

This is a great allegory for young readers and adults alike. It is a good use of imagination in retelling the rebellion of the angels and how Satan may tempt people today. Framing the allegory in a modern setting adds to the impact. And I love the devotions at the end. They’s be great for parents to discuss with their children
