The Elusive Miss Ellison (Kregel, February 2017)

Handsome appearance counts for naught unless matched by good character and actions.

That’s the firm opinion of not-so-meek minister’s daughter Lavinia Ellison. So even though all the other villagers of St. Hampton Heath are swooning over the newly returned seventh Earl of Hawkesbury, she is not impressed. If a man won’t take his responsibilities seriously and help those who are supposed to be able to depend on him, he deserves no respect from her. In Lavinia’s pretty, gray eyes, Nicholas Stamford is just as arrogant and reckless as his brother–who stole the most important person in Livvie’s world.

Nicholas is weighed down by his own guilt and responsibility, by the pain his careless brother caused, and by the legacy of war he’s just left. This quick visit home to St. Hampton Heath will be just long enough to ease a small part of that burden. Asking him to bother with the lives of the villagers when there’s already a bailiff on the job is simply too much to expect.

That is, until the hoydenish, intelligent, and very opinionated Miss Ellison challenges him to see past his pain and pride. With her angelic voice in his head, he may even be beginning to care. But his isn’t the only heart that needs to change.

These two lonely hearts may each have something the other needs. But with society’s opposition, ancestral obligations, and a shocking family secret, there may be too many obstacles in their way.

Fans of Georgette Heyer, Lori Wick, and Julie Klassen will enjoy the spirited exchanges between the bluestocking minister’s daughter and the bruised war hero as they move past pride and presumption to a humbled appreciation of God’s grace and the true strength of love.

I love reading tales set in Regency England especially when it teaches me something about the people who lived during that time period. I can’t wait to read the others in the Regency Brides Series.

I adored this book. To me it’s written in the style of the Bronte sisters. A good strong heroine who can take care of herself and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Who then has to learn how to allow her heart to have a voice as well.

The character development was pretty good throughout the book. The characters were (for the most part) believable, and I also liked the main characters. The book very much had a Jane Austen feel to it, which was fun.

  • ‘THE ELUSIVE MISS ELLISON’ BY CAROLYN MILLER

The novel which takes place in 19th century England was an interesting read. While I enjoyed the writer’s writing, I found the story to be quite frustrating and boring. For a woman, who people claim to be a “superior woman”, she acts rather dumb and when she doesn’t get her way; a spoiled child. The plot seemed repetitive and seemed like the two main characters kept putting their ego over their hearts.

This book was rather enjoyable. The dialogue between Nicolas and Lavinia was fun and engaging. Grace is woven throughout this story. Lavinia experiences it and shows it especially those in need. If you like fairy tale endings and your wildest dreams coming true, this book is for you.

    It was an easy read.

Filled with a strong and opinionated heroine who one can instantly warm to and a strong, brooding hero this book is a wonderful Regency book.

The Elusive Miss Ellison is a fantastic addition to a regency fan’s library. The characters for the next books are minor characters in this first book, piquing our interest and ensuring we will be waiting eagerly for their stories. Lavinia and Nick are both flawed, purposefully so, and this makes them relatable as well as increasing the tension between them – both emotional and romantical. A delightful book from start to finish!

More than a romance novel, this is a story about opening your heart and hearing God’s word, letting Him in and finding forgiveness in the way He wants us to. The title of this book piqued my interest. When I first began reading it, I kept looking to see why the book was titled the way it was. I figured it was a little like some other books I had read, where the main character might have been partly elusive but was quickly won over by the man and then everything else was predictable in the book. I was quite excited to see that was not the plan of Miller’s new book.

Fans of Austen-esque Regency novels will be happy to have another go-to author. Carolyn Miller’s debut novel, The Elusive Miss Ellison, meets all the requirements: an independent heroine, a hunky hero with more than a few flaws, and a love story filled with obstacles, yet possessing sweet hints of a happily-ever-after. There is something that draws me in about the many Regency and Edwardian era books that seem to be popular now. I love the romanticized period of time, though I’m sure reality was much less so.

The Elusive Miss Ellison reads like a slightly different, yet strangely familiar, version of Pride and Prejudice. Nicholas definitely comes off as proud and aloof, whereas Lavinia, though sweet to her friends, seems much more brusque than Austen’s Lizzy…

The Elusive Miss Ellison is a wonderful start to a series set in the Regency period, providing fans of historical fiction a visual representation of the social hierarchy, the social differences between each class and the expectations to remain as such. The characters were all entertaining, though I find the strongest character development with our main characters. Their struggle to find common ground, and overcome all the difference challenges to their friendship, let alone their union was infused throughout. It gave the story depth. It’s beautifully descriptive and an exposé on the lives of the less fortunate during those times. Be sure to grab a copy and let me know your thoughts on this fairly new author!

I enjoyed this Regency era story about an Earl and a minister’s daughter who push each other to become a better version of themselves and in the process fall in love. A well written story with lots of character growth, beautiful English countryside, and a major twist that lends some intrigue.

A charming, regency era read for this Austen fan. I really enjoy Lavina (love her name) as a modest, and at times modern thinking woman. I would love to read the next book and can’t wait for it’s release.

If you’re a fan of Regency romance, you’ll love The Elusive Miss Ellison.  It has it all – inter-class attraction, a poor village in need of attention, a faith journey by one unaware, slanderous gossip by the wealthy, drama, tragedy, and more.   I think Miller’s book would attract even those unfamiliar with this time period because of the great drama and repartee that lies within these pages.

A little slow with the pacing, but a beautiful clean Regency Romance that had good and believable growth and development for the characters and an enjoyable story line.

A story of hope, grace, and family bonds, and hidden secrets…God’s extended grace can reach and heal the brokenhearted, even the earl’s soul. Simpleton with a kind heart, a servant with great inheritance. A lovely story; so much have been said, so much wrong have been done.

The Elusive Miss Ellison by author Carolyn Miller is a great novel and part of the series by her called Regency Brides A Legacy of Grace. What will happen when they see each other? Will either of them show their growing feelings? Everything is going against them. Anyone who likes Regency England and its times will adore this story.

When a novel is garnering comparisons to those of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, it makes me take notice — sometimes the comparisons are justified, but sometimes they are not. When it comes to Carolyn Miller’s The Elusive Miss Ellison, those comparisons are completely on point. This novel set in the Regency era is a fun, refreshing read.

Love can transform, as Lavinia and Nicholas’s story shows. When we first meet Lavinia, she does good works, but is also, frankly, a little annoying with her quick-to-judge attitude. Nicholas, on the other hand, fails to see the responsibility he has for the people who rely on him for a living when he inherits his title. By getting to know each other, Lavinia and Nicholas’s rough edges begin to soften. Nicholas becomes more compassionate, while Lavinia finds that the world isn’t always black and white. A surprise discovery about Lavinia’s past adds even more complications to their relationship. I enjoyed watching both of these characters evolve and figure out how their differences can be complimentary rather than contradictory.
