Enough Already (Abingdon, March 2015)

Recognize your own outer and inner beauty as defined by God, not the media or others.

Most women know that God loves them, but might he love them more if they finally lost that last ten pounds, or got their hair to lay right, or finally found a pair of jeans that looked good and let them breathe? Well, maybe God doesn’t care about jeans, but women do, and all the talk about inner beauty hasn’t kept all of us from staring into a mirror and taking an inventory that never quite measures up. Enough Already will:

—Elevate the soul-freeing, spiritual truth that God is the Creator of beauty and that women are called to appreciate and care for themselves as his own.
—Enable women to accept God-given beauty so that when they look in the mirror they see his handiwork, not their flaws.
—Equip women to win the ugly struggle with beauty once and for all.

  • ENOUGH ALREADY REVIEW

I loved this book. I think there are more than enough self-help books or feel-good books already written, but this book was different. Roose talks about so many different aspects of our beauty and how our spiritual life relates to our self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. Every chapter includes scripture which backs up everything that Roose is talking about. She also has included several personal accounts from ladies across the country that are probably similar to things the reader has felt or thought. Also, every chapter includes discussion questions if you are doing the book with a small group (a great idea, in my opinion) as well as personal journaling questions to help you on your journey to accept your beauty.

  • A BLOG TOUR AND BOOK REVIEW

In a day and age where beauty and the quest for it are plastered all over magazines, the internet and via movies and television, it is often very hard to feel up to par, and far too easy to find ourselves comparing to those we see portrayed in the media. Yet, we know we are created in the image of God, so therefore we are beautiful and should not always look for flaws or compare ourselves to others.

  • ENOUGH ALREADY #BOOKREVIEW @LITFUSE

It’s about what’s inside. I have to say my favorite chapter was “If the Barn Needs Paintin’” simply because I am that woman. I struggle to do for myself. I have a gift certificate for almost the entire amount of getting my hair cut and colored. I’ve had it since December. I still haven’t used it. It’s not that I don’t want to, I really do! It’s that I can’t get past feeling guilty for the small amount of money on top of the certificate that I’ll be spending on ME. I should be spending that money and that time on my kids right? And the verses she used in the chapter from Ecclesiastes 3 are ones that I used to tell myself it was okay! Imagine my surprise as she uses them to tell me the opposite!

  • ENOUGH ALREADY BY BARBARA L. ROOSE {A REVIEW}

As women, we all struggle with our own ugly battle with beauty. We look in the mirror and see flaw after flaw after flaw after flaw after flaw ad infinitum. Books have been written telling women how to view themselves, how to be beautiful, what beauty is, and what beauty isn’t. We are bombarded by it at every turn, every glance on the shelves at the store checkout lane shows us more and more what beauty is. And we feel measureless to keep up or measure up.

Until now. Barbara L. Roose has written what in my opinion is the best book on beauty available. She writes with grace, kindness, and understanding.

  • RETHINK INNER BEAUTY WITH BARBARA ROOSE’S ‘ENOUGH ALREADY’ AND A WEEKEND GETAWAY GIVEAWAY

I was really interested in reading this book as a woman who struggles sometimes with feeling pretty. Many women deal with their beauty on a daily basis but this book sounded like it would have a lot of answers on why we don’t have to worry about our outside beauty so much since we are daughters of the King. But I was very disappointed after finishing this book.

Barb is honest, candid, and down-to-earth in her book Enough Already. Everything she shares with her readers is most helpful. Enough Already isn’t a hurry lets get this read kind of book. You want to have time to digest what is being said. It is more of a Bible study type of book. A book you can use individually or in a group setting. Each chapter ends with group discussion questions and personal reflection journal questions. It is a wonderfully, insightful book that women of all ages, young and old alike, will find helpful in more ways than one. • ENOUGH ALREADY

First of all we have all had those thoughts of if only i was prettier, skinnier, taller, shorter and so on. This is what this book speaks about. As a society that idolizes the celebrities and focuses so much on outer beauty the author urges us to look at ourselves as Christ sees us. While the world looks at us from the outer beauty God looks at our heart.

  • ENOUGH ALREADY

Through this book, Barbara Roose tactfully and kindly deals with the subject of beauty. I enjoyed her loving, enthusiastic personality which resonated through the pages of text. Enough Already by Barb Roose is 20 chapters of wisdom, Scripture and helpful discussion questions to be used in a group or for personal reflection. There are also journaling activities that can help you put your thoughts and feelings into some kind of order and perhaps dispel lies that you believe about who you are.
One thing I appreciated about this author is that she uses Biblical wisdom as the foundation for every topic; this isn’t just a book full of some woman’s advice.
I also found it quite funny!

  • ENOUGH ALREADY: WINNING YOUR UGLY STRUGGLE WITH BEAUTY BY BARBARA ROOSE

As a young lady I always appreciate books like this one! I wish I had read it when I was a teenager, struggling with understanding who I really was in God’s eyes! Through this book, Barbara Roose tactfully and kindly deals with the subject of beauty. I enjoyed her loving, enthusiastic personality which resonated through the pages of text.

This book would be perfect for a women’s book study because it includes group discussion questions, quizzes and such for each chapter.

One thing I appreciated about this author is that she uses Biblical wisdom as the foundation for every topic; this isn’t just a book full of some woman’s advice.

Wisely, Enough Already doesn’t just cover the topic of outward appearance but also addresses the root of our problems and insecurities- the heart. I loved the practical approach many of the chapters had which will help the reader deal with friendships and relationships in life.

Something I did not like about the book was the chapter on aspects of a woman’s body. The author attempted to be humorous and upbeat about it but it wasn’t in keeping with the deepness and wisdom of the earlier chapters of the book. It also wasn’t an incredibly necessary chapter in the book.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

…I liked that this book wasn’t a handout (like “5 Proven Steps to Loving Your Body!”) because it’s not an issue to be so simply fixed. Instead each chapter deals with the root of the issue and forces you to examine where your mind and heart are with each discussion. Is it harder that way? Of course, but that usually means it’s worth it. She provides some practical tips as well, like helpful things to do when you’re looking in the mirror and not feeling it….

I really enjoyed this book. Barbara is so honest and brings a lot of humor to this book, which made it so easy to read. I really felt like she understood what it is to struggle with how we look. She talks about comparing ourselves to others, especially those in the spotlight. I absolutely loved her story about her Barbie dolls and how they affected her thoughts about herself. I think anyone who ever played with Barbie dolls had this same feeling.

  • ENOUGH ALREADY

In Enough Already Barbara L Roose takes on the challenging subject of how women feel about themselves. There are little quizzes, journaling questions, and also group discussion questions which all make this book excellent for personal study or as a Bible study. Everything is backed by scripture and it is reinforced time and again just how much we are loved by God.
This is more than just a book about outward beauty though. It covers topics that we sometimes bury deep inside, including forgiveness, friendship, and even a chapter on our most private physical parts (in which the author tries to add humor by using some wording that detracts from the rest of the book–I found this odd).
Overall, it’s a good book. It didn’t captivate my attention as I’d hoped it would but it may be helpful for others.

  • I think every woman should read this, especially if you struggle with self-esteem issues (and what woman doesn’t!) I liked how she asked us to examine where our ideas of beauty come from and the events and people that have shaped our views of ourselves. She talks about balancing outer beauty and inner beauty, not listening to the lies of others or telling ourselves lies, and memorizing meaningful Scriptures to us to combat those lies. I think this would be a great book to do either on your own or as a group.

Not only does this book address physical beauty, but inner beauty and grace as well. The author uses personal stories and scripture stories for each chapter which I really liked. It is beautifully and prayerfully written.

I love in chapter 7 that she gives us 3 things to think about when we are “tempted to focus on our physical flaws”. Instead we should be reminded of God’s truth and our purpose here on earth by; “See the Goodness”, “See the Blessing” and “See the Purpose”.

  • ENOUGH ALREADY!!

If you are like most women, myself included, you have struggled with your looks and feeling beautiful. It seems to be a part of our inner most being, that problem of seeing ourselves as lovely women. Barbara Roose really digs into the problem we all deal with and goes right to the roots of it, clear back to the Garden of Eden and the start of sin in our lives. I love her sense of humor and the way she takes her personal experience and share it in a way that every one of us can relate to. Throughout the whole book she draws you back to the Word of God and what Truth you need to lean on in when grappling with your own beauty insecurity.

She has thought provoking questions and at the end of each chapter is a Beauty Mark, a small piece of advice you can hang on to and think about. She even provides group discussions and personal journaling questions to help you really think about what she has just shared in that chapter.

This is a wonderful book and would be perfect for group study.

  • WHAT WOMEN NEED TO HEAR ABOUT BEAUTY

I will be the first to admit that I don’t really care for books about beauty or modesty or self-image. But this new book by Barbara Roose grabbed me with its title, Enough Already, a clever play-on-words that says to me “stop the beauty madness!” and “you don’t have to do anything else to be beautiful; you already are.” (Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book through Litfuse Publicity Group in exchange for my review.)

And Roose delivers on those two statements with candid and compassionate truth about our “ugly struggle with beauty.” Roose is honest about her own struggles with beauty and what she sees as her own imperfections. I immediately connected with her writing voice and think she’d be a fun person to know.

It would be a great personal Bible Study but I am thinking a small coffee group would be so much fun. • BOOK REVIEW: “ENOUGH ALREADY” BY BARBARA L. ROOSE

I love Barbara’s honesty. Her candidness about her own struggles allows women to be honest with themselves. And Barbara’s right. There is such a battle over women feeling confident and beautiful. I think about the Bruno Mars song, “Just the Way You Are.” The lyrics are words that every girl craves for the right guy to feel about her. To think she’s beautiful as is. But, sadly, we don’t. I’m just as guilty. We are so hard on ourselves.

The author wrote a wonderful, insightful book that will help free the soul. Reading it will help with the spiritual truth that God is all beauty and that women are to appreciate and care about themselves as God’s own. The author will help women know that God gave women beauty so that that image in the mirror is to be appreciated and seen as what God has created, not the flaws that women have. The book will help women win the struggle with loveliness once and for all. That struggle we go through is down right ugly. Enough of all of that already. We all feel that we are expected to be beautiful and wonderful, but are we? No. We may be the most beautiful women there is on earth but she can’t be seen in a mirror. We have a nasty habit of judging ourselves and that just makes the struggle for beauty all the more ugly.

  • RETHINK INNER BEAUTY WITH BARBARA ROOSE’S ‘ENOUGH ALREADY’ REVIEW AND A WEEKEND GETAWAY

    – So the book will be good for some but not for others. I say this because while I agree about the fact the women are stuck on the beauty of the world instead of self, I do not fully put it into my head that if I feel ugly it is not true in God’s eyes. This to me opens up many doors and takes a good message and turns it into a religious theme. One should just know their worth without having to justify it by any means and this author seems to want to drill affirmation and worth into someone by the force of God. So to me this book is not going to be shared among my family. I do not want my girls to feel like there was something wrong with them in the first place. Now to be fair there are some people that might truly need hope and faith and in which case perhaps street women or drug addicts, this can be sort of a healing and finding book.

  • A BALANCED VIEW OF BEAUTY

So what did I personally think of this book? I think it’s great! Some things I especially liked about it:

Her writing style was so conversational… it really felt like I was in an intimate setting with some girlfriends and we were just chatting.

I loved how she combined both inner and outer beauty… like it says, we *know* inner beauty is what counts, but we all *want* and sometimes end up focusing too much on outer beauty. She talks about how outer beauty IS important, it’s just not AS important as inner beauty, and I think that really is the key.

She made me think about beauty and about being a woman in general in a little different light.

I think this would make an excellent small group/discussion study, and guess what? She apparently had that in mind as well, as each chapter has discussion questions and then personal questions, which I think is great – have everyone in the small group answer and discuss the discussion questions, and then depending on how intimate/comfortable the group is, share the personal questions as well.

With all the articles, magazines, TV commercials, and movies that flaunt “How to look…”, “What to wear…” , “How to attract….”, “How to be ….” it is wonderful to see a book about beauty…all of beauty – not just the inside beauty and not just the outside beauty, but a balanced view of both!

This book is christian based and Roose identifies the real enemy in our life – the devil. She explores different areas in our life and how our ideas of beauty and self-hate can sabotage healthy living. She doesn’t shy away from tough topics either!

It was refreshing to read because Barbara has a voice that feels like we’ve been old friends and she is giving some much needed and wanted advice. Not at all preachy, this book uses encouragement to help us tackle this tough subject. Each chapter has two sets of questions at the end.
