Fatal Trauma (Abingdon Press, May 2015)

A gunman who has nothing to lose faces a doctor who could lose it all to prove his innocence.

When Dr. Mark Baker and Nurse Kelly Atkinson are held at the mercy of a dangerous gunman, the lives of every emergency room patient are at stake. At the end of the evening three men are dead. One of them is a police officer who couldn’t be saved despite Mark’s best efforts. The other two are members of the feared Zeta drug cartel.

Though the standoff is over, the killing is not, because when the drug cartel loses its members, revenge is not far behind. Facing an adversary whose desires are dark and efforts are ruthless, Mark finds himself under suspicion as a killer, yet still a potential victim. When he turns to his high school sweetheart, attorney Gwen Woodruff, for help, Kelly helplessly looks on, as she hides her own feelings for the good doctor.

At the height of the conflict, three questions remain: Who is the shooter? Who will the next victim be? And can Mark prove his innocence before the gun turns on him?

I love medical suspense stories, and Richard Mabry MB. is definitely my go to guy for this. Having the background he weaves a compelling and believable story. I imagine he has many actual instances to draw from and I always come out of those novels feeling like I have been in the trauma room with the characters, and that I have also learned something new from the world of medicine. I have never aspired to make my career in this field, so other than the times I or my loved ones have needed medical assistance, this is the closest to these situations I have come to,. The plot in this novel is great, the vivid imagery is there. The suspense that I have come to expect from Dr. Mabry was missing, though that might have been his intention, or it could have been because I was reading it on my Kindle. I was disappointed in that I could not connect with his characters as I usually can. They seemed to not have the depth of his earlier works.

It had been a long time since I’d read a good thriller-type novel so I was really looking forward to reading this one. From page one I was pulled in and this novel didn’t let me go til the last paragraph.

This book was so complex and had many pieces interwoven that made it a great read. From the mystery aspects, the medical bits and pieces, faith-filled undercurrent and even some romance this book really had all the right puzzle pieces. This was my first novel by Dr. Mabry, but considering how much I enjoyed this one I can say with certainty it won’t be my last. If you love a good book with twists and turns that keep up reading into the early morning hours then this book is for you!

Dr. Mark Baker’ main concern was Nurse Kelly Atkinson, especially since he had dated her and was attracted to her. But was this brother already dead? And the police shows up and the scene was not a pretty one. There are many twists and turns in this story, a lot going on that makes you wonder just how many people are running with the bad guys, to many people are losing their lives. The police need to get to the bottom of this before anyone else gets hurt or loses their lives. And that’s all I will say about this book! Because its much more fun digging in to at book like this not knowing a thing about what is going on. And you know with Dr. Mabry, its going to be a killer read!

In Fatal Trauma, the reader is set up for a thrill filled ride. From the first pages, the action pulsates. There’s also a complicated romance and strong faith element. What I liked most were the intense medical scenes coupled with the question of how the complex mystery would be resolved. The characters were interesting and at varied stages in their personal lives and faith journeys. It was a world I enjoyed entering through the pages of this book.

Richard Mabry is probably one of my favorite authors for medical fiction. And while I finished this book in a day, the story was a little bit different for me. Not in a bad way, just different.

The best part of the book for me was the spiritual journey that Mark takes throughout the book. Kelly is an influential Christian in his life, and it was neat to read how she talked to him about Christ. I actually found some of this dialogue helpful and a great reminder to take opportunities to point people to Jesus in various circumstances—and especially during tragedy.

I usually find medical Christian books to be interesting, with being married to a nurse is that really surprising? I have read some of Richard Mabry’s books before and thoroughly enjoyed them and while this one did not measure up to some of the other medical books but it was still an enjoyable and interesting read. The characters are not quite as enjoyable and I did not click with them as much, still the aspects of the book I enjoyed and it was still an easy and quick read. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

There are so many levels of suspense in this book. You have the not knowing who the shooter is or where the shooter will be. You don’t know who the next victim is going to be. And then you have to mix in the drug cartel. Are they working with the hospital? Do they have people within the hospital? How are they choosing their victims and why? Plus you have to add in the romantic portion. Who will Dr Mark end up with? Will he be arrested for killing a woman he dated? Will he end up with Kelly or his old flame(turned lawyer) Gwen? Or will any of them survive?

Mr. Mabry makes his characters come alive, through the actions of both the ‘good’ one and the ‘bad’ ones the characters are fully developed and it seems like you are really looking into their lives as they live it, heart pounding by heart pounding beat. I think too that is why the medical jargon doesn’t throw me as much as it would some because his characters are just that well rounded and seem so real so it’d be normal to hear a doctor or nurse speak as they do in the book. I do recommend this book or any of his others if you’d like something to keep you awake at night, or if you’re already awake to keep you company.

Another good book by Mabry! If you are interested in medical mystery, some ‘romance’, and a Christian backdrop, then I really think you’ll like the book. This is the third book by Mabry I’ve read and I enjoyed it as much as the other two.

You won’t get spoilers here in my review but I’ll say that once I started reading it was difficult to put the book down. There are a lot of cliche phrases and scenes (just being honest) but that’s okay in my opinion because of the way Mabry writes his passion: the medical field. He does well with the mystery and fine with the ‘romance’ as well. Speaking of romance, there isn’t a heavy dose in this book.

    Good book!

I did not enjoy reading this book as much as previous books by this author. For some odd reason I did not connect with the characters. They felt flat and underdeveloped. The book plot itself was good. The premise was interesting. The faith element was there. The romance was just okay. I did not feel it. The suspense/mystery part was okay. It did not hold my attention all the way through like his books normally do. I did appreciate the twist at the end. The conclusion did tie the book up perfectly. I really do like this author’s works. I suggest a new reader start with the Prescription for Trouble series. It is one of my favorites for the genre.

I love me a good medical mystery drama, whether it is on tv or in a book. Dr. Richard Mabry’s book never fail to please. I love that because he is a retired physician I know the medical stuff in his books is not made up and I get a real look into hospital and medical life. This book had me engaged from the very get go. It starts right out with the action and intrigue and leaves you guessing the entire time. There were several times that I thought I had it all figured out only to find out I was so very wrong. Of course near the end some of my assumptions proved to be true but the big surprise at the very end I wasn’t even imagining which to me is the sign of a great suspense writer. The characters in this book were so very real and I found myself feeling their suspicion and fear.

I have been a long time reader of Richard Mabry and loved Fatal Trauma. I really enjoy medical drama, and this book did not disappoint. The author’s descriptions and facts are well researched, and I found myself absolutely captivated by the story…..it was hard to put down.

The action was riveting and I found myself tense, waiting to see what would happen next. I was easily able to visualize what was taking place. This is one of those books you do NOT want to start at bedtime…you’ll be up all night, turning pages!

If you enjoy suspense and medical fiction, I strongly encourage you to give this author a try.

For Dr. Mark Baker and Nurse Kelly Atkinson, one life or death situation turns into many after two members of the Zeta drug cartel die in their ER. To make matters worse, the police force blames Mark for the shooting of an officer during the skirmish. Now Mark and Kelly must keep looking over their shoulders, not knowing if they can trust those sworn to protect them, as well as for the Zeta hitman. Faith, trust, and survival dominate this suspense-filled work. I mentioned before that the book starts with a great hook–a hostage situation is always an effective attention grabber. From there the story expands as multiple players are drawn into the drug cartel’s plot for revenge.

Although Fatal Trauma plunges its characters into danger and stress most of us don’t encounter, it does present true to life emotions and reactions. A life-altering event causes main characters Mark and Kelly to examine and reevaluate what is important in their lives. They learn that even when we are not seeking God, He is there waiting to enter into our lives.

  • After reading and reviewing a previous book by Mabry, I was excited to read his latest medical suspense novel. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if my expectations were too high, based on how much I loved his previous work, but this one didn’t quite measure up in the same way.The storyline started off with a bang and I was hooked at the beginning, but it didn’t seem to resonate with me in quite the same way. I’m not sure exactly what it was – the characters didn’t quite have the same depth or maybe I felt them a bit harder to relate with. It was still a great read, and I would still recommend it – I think my expectations were just too high. I will still not hesitate to read his next book!

I think writing realistic Christian suspense must be extremely difficult. Add in a medical setting, and I believe the task must be super difficult. Richard Mabry, a retired physician, has a reputation of creating books that combine suspense, medicine, and faith successfully. I’ve heard his stories described as “having heart.” While I liked Fatal Trauma, it seemed to fall a little short, and I can’t quite explain why. I think it tried too hard to accomplish all things. Mark has been lax in his faith and he rediscovers that. He makes a commitment to a woman when he hasn’t done that since high school ( there is a connection to that part of his life that I thought was very contrived, but it may open the way for a future book). There are other details such as a child abuse incident that maybe were meant to fill out the realism of the story, but I just felt were confusing. Then there are the cast of minor characters and of course, there has to be a villain hidden within the workings of the hospital.
I will say there is a surprise villain at the end of the story, one I never saw coming. The presence of this person fits the plot, but I wish readers had had more exposure to this person so we would buy into that person’s “evilness.” I am giving Fatal Trauma a 3.5 — worth reading, but not my favorite suspense title.

After enjoying a few of this author’s previous novels I was looking forward to reading this book. Sadly I couldn’t finish it. I read a chunk of it but wasn’t getting into the story at all and I have so many books to read that I can’t spend time on ones I’m not enjoying. The writing was a bit choppy, there were too many details about insignificant things, and I wasn’t really liking any of the characters but the premise was interesting and I’m sure others will enjoy it, it just wasn’t for me. I hate writing negative reviews but I was asked to give my honest thoughts and that’s what I have done. I really hope you check out other reviews and don’t just take my opinion.

The timeliness of the story line was something that could be found in today’s headlines. There is a lot of violence in the book, along with some mildly graphic descriptions of injuries, so that might be a little too in depth for some readers. It wasn’t too much for me, though, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fatal Trauma.

Fatal Trauma is a fast-paced medical suspense that held my attention throughout its pages. Once again, Richard Mabry has written a novel that severely interfered with getting my household chores taken care of. I was pretty much useless until I finished reading it. The story immediately jumped into suspense mode on the very first page during a scene in the ER and the tension had very little relief until final resolution.

ER doctor Mark Baker finds himself in big trouble after the deaths of two members of a dangerous drug cartel. Not only is the cartel out for revenge against him and other ER staff, but the police suspect he is responsible for another subsequent death. Time is at a premium as Mark attempts to prove his innocence at the same time he is in fear for his life.

OH EM GEEEEE!!! This is such an awesome book!! Literally from the very first pages you cannot put the book down!!! I have ALWAYS loved every single one of Dr. Mabry’s books, but this one … it just might be my favorite!!! The suspense is crazy good! I mean, can you even imagine being an ER doctor and 2 men arrive that you find out later are part of the most feared drug cartel??? What’s worse is that the men don’t make it and now the cartel wants revenge!!! Talk about having to watch your back at all times!! Dr. Mark was just having an ordinary day in the ER, and then bam, his life changes in an instant!

When it comes to Mark and Kelly, well, you’ll just have to read it to find out that answer!! For me, I wanted to seriously shake Kelly, and tell her to SPEAK UP GIRLFRIEND!!! Don’t you

I love watching and reading medical dramas, so I was eager to read Fatal Trauma, my first book by Richard Mabry. Dr. Mabry’s medical expertise is evident, and I really enjoyed the context of the story and its medical aspects. I have absolutely LOVED every single novel Richard L. Mabry has written because to truly appreciate any medical suspense novel, you have to have a working knowledge of what it takes to be a doctor working in a hospital and the terminology and procedures have to line up correctly to be believable, and thankfully due to being a retired physician, this comes across beautifully in all his novels. He takes you someplace you could have never imagined happening to people in the medical field, but there is always that possibility. For me, this one rocks the suspense at a full 5 out of 5 stars!

Overall, I enjoyed Fatal Trauma. The pacing was good, the characters were likeable (though I didn’t feel I got to know some of them very well), and the plot featured a couple of twists I never saw coming and absolutely loved. (Seriously, I had a couple of gasp out loud moments—I love those when I’m reading suspense!) However, some of the aspects surrounding the investigation didn’t ring true to me, and I got tired of the cops’ continual focus on Mark as a suspect. Still, this is enjoyable medical suspense, and it makes for a quick, intense read.

However it didn’t hold my attention, it got a bit slow and I couldn’t really connect with the characters, I found Dr. Mark Baker a bit unlikable, and just felt sorry for Kelly. I’ve been reading this author since his early works and he keeps improving with each book. This is probably my favorite of his. It opens with the action beginning on the very first page and doesn’t let up until the end. I started this in the morning and finished before bed time. Very good writing with twists and turns that I never saw coming. I really liked the way the author wove the gospel into the story as well. Characters who struggle with their faith are relatable and he brought them to life.

Fatal Trauma is a fast paced thriller which takes many twists and turns keeping the reader turning pages through to the end. The story begins in a busy ER – one I’m definitely familiar of. I feel that the author, Dr. Mabry, has had his share of patient experience. He definitely understands the minds of his medical characters and accurately portrays many thoughts and feelings consistent with those working in the healthcare field. Because of the sequence in the first part of the story I was motivated to finish so I could finally see who the true bad guy was. Dr. Mabry also always finds a way to pull the message of God into the story. Because of some other issues I’ve given in my full review, I gave 3 out of 5 stars.

Writing in his traditional (read “edge of the seat, pulse-pounding suspense”) style, Dr. Richard Mabry brings his technical skills as a retired physician to yet another page-turner. As the book deals with life and death on various levels, Dr. Mabry also brings his faith.

Demonstrating once again that faith and life do not have to live in separate compartments, author Richard Mabry tells the tale of life and death, winning and losing, and most of all . . .

That got me involved in the story.

Dr. Richard Mabry has done it again, he has penned a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat, can’t put it down novel. His newest book, Fatal Trauma, in my humble opinion, is his best.

Fatal Trauma begins when a gunman enters the ER holding Nurse Kelly Atkinson at gunpoint as she pushes the gunman’s brother into the ER in a wheelchair. The first thing Dr. Mark Baker thinks about is how to escape the area without being drawn into the situation. Unfortunately, the gunman notices Mark and asks if he is the doctor. This begins one of the most heart pounding book beginnings that I have read in a long time.

If you like fast paced medical drama, this book is for you.

I enjoy a book with a good hook and no loose ends, which is exactly what Dr. Richard Mabry delivers with his new novel – Fatal Trauma. Faith, trust, and survival dominate this suspense-filled work!

I think Fatal Trauma is Dr. Mabry’s best medical thriller to date. Action, mystery and suspense these are the ingredients of Fatal Trauma. Dr. Mabry has provided us a complicated mystery thriller as Mark’s life is in danger practically from page one.

Richard L. Mabry crafts an intriguing medical drama in his novel, Fatal Trauma. Beginning with a gunman’s appearance and demands in the emergency room, the suspense of what could happen remains throughout the plot. A novel that kept me turning pages on the edge of my seat, Fatal Trauma is interesting and thrilling, and I’m sure fans of medical suspense will not want to miss this read.

“….’If God doesn’t use people who’ve failed, who’s left for Him to use’?” (p. 78)

Kelly’s friend Tracy speaks a timely truth into her life. The ladies think, at the time, they are trying to share their faith with Kelly’s current romantic interest, Dr. Mark Baker, but it turns out to be much more meaningful than either of them dare dream. Already, both Kelly and Tracy are on high alert because of a drug cartel hit that followed on the heels of an ER hijacking of the personnel to treat a cartel member, but the whole incident in the ER has set off a series of deadly events, and it seems no one is safe.

Richard Mabry, M.D. has always been able to weave a tightly knit story with layers of plots. He develops the characters emotionally and spiritually without distracting from a very face-paced, suspenseful story. He has become even more adept at hiding the criminals in plain sight, and I have to admit, I just about fell for the red herring hook, line and sinker! Kelly and Mark remain the central characters throughout the story, and even their romantic interest is couched in a lot of twists and turns! Fatal Trauma will keep you guessing until the very end of the novel!

I’ve been a fan of Mabry’s work for a long time, and Fatal Trauma doesn’t disappoint at all!! Hang on for the ride! It is going to be very, very bumpy!!

Fatal Trauma by Richard Mabry is not my favorite Mabry novel. Although it is circumstantially suspenseful, and I always learn about the medical profession and terminology when I read Mabry’s work. I loved the thread of faith that was prominent throughout the novel that encouraged me that God uses imperfect people and He is a God of second chances. What I didn’t care for were the characters. They often seemed mechanical and detracted from a well-crafted plot. The dialogue seemed forced in many instances. The “love triangle” felt manufactured.

All that said, I would still recommend this book. Overall, I enjoyed it. And I encountered a valuable concept that I apparently haven’t learned, yet: we all make mistakes, but God offers grace and forgiveness to those who wrong us. Thanks Dr. Mabry.

  • I enjoyed this fast-paced medical suspense story that kept me guessing! There was a lot going on, from the initial shooting to the ones that followed, Mark and Kelly fearing for their lives and Mark’s job and innocence called into question. Not to mention he’s trying to re-examine his view on God, his life and who he wants to share it with. Two things I wasn’t as crazy about were that we don’t get to know the characters very well and, though there’s a romantic relationship in the story, there really isn’t any romance at all.

I always hate to give an author anything less than a stellar review, but Fatal Trauma fell a little flat for me. The story read for me like a second installment in a series. The reader is dropped right in the middle of Mark’s relationship with Kelly with little backstory given. The whole time I was reading, I had questions that weren’t answered about them both.
With that said, Mabry knows how to write a story with twists and turns that you don’t see coming and an ending that was completely unexpected. I just couldn’t connect with the characters and some of the scenerios were a little far fetched to feel genuine. Don’t count Mabry’s writing out though…I’ve read other novels by him. This one just isn’t his very best writing in my opinion.

Fatal Trauma is a faced paced, edge of your seat page turner. It is obvious that the Richard has done research and knows his way around the ER. The Christian theme is obvious and very forthright throughout the novel.

Richard knows how to write suspense and how to keep you guessing! There was a surprise at every turn and this made me want to keep reading. There were parts that made me sit forward in my seat, anxiously waiting for what would happen next!

I enjoyed this novel. However it took me a while to invest in Mark and Kelly because the novel starts after their relationship was in progress. This made certain parts of the novel a little far-fetched, like when Mark’s high school sweetheart comes into the picture.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. If you are looking for a heart-racing romance suspense novel, you will love Fatal Trauma!

Fatal Trauma by Richard L. Mabry, M.D. was an amazing book. This book brings the two things I love most in life in a book. I have read two other books by this author and I have loved them just as much as I loved this one.

I love the suspense and the surprises that Mabry builds into the plot. I haven’t been able to guess the ending of any of his books yet before he reveals it, and those types of surprises just make a mystery. Mabry continues to rank high on my list of favorite mystery authors.

I really enjoyed this latest book from Dr. Richard Mabry as it was full of action and kept me guessing until the end! Fatal Trauma begins with Mark and Kelly working to save lives, including their own, while on duty at the ER and the story takes off from there as they find themselves continually in danger. There were so many more layers to this story than I initially though as bits and pieces of characters’ lives were revealed as well as how the characters interacted with each other. I thought I knew who was behind the shootings and attacks on Mark and Kelly, but I was wrong and I love that I was kept guessing as that really held my attention and I could not stop reading.

This review is for the book Fatal Trauma by Richard L. Mabry. This is the second book by Mabry that I have read and I really enjoyed both books. This story begins with excitement and does not slow down. In the beginning of the book, a dangerous gunman enters the hospital where Mark and Kelly are working. He takes Kelly hostage and insists that someone treat his brother. Acting quickly, Mark and Kelly go to work, and a shoot-out ensues involving a hospital security guard. Unfortunately it turns out that the two brothers are part of a drug cartel from Mexico. Suddenly Mark, Kelly, and all others who were present in that situation are targets. The rest of the book follows their story of trying to stay alive and figure out how to get all the right people into police custody.

Richard Mabry is a great writer! He knows how to catch your attention quickly, and he holds it until the very end!

Fatal Trauma begins in the Emergency Room of the hospital, with one man bleeding, another man screaming for help, and yet another bursting in with a gun, threatening everyone involved.

Dr. Mark Baker has his hands full… as he tries to protect his nurse, while hurrying to try to help the patient. Will it work out? Will the patient live, or will the nurse die, when the gunman takes his revenge out on her?

I actually began reading Dr. Mabry’s books when a friend on mine passed one on to me… I knew it had to be good – and the medical terminology and writing accurate – because she’s a nurse and she loves his novels. But I didn’t know how much I would enjoy them, too!

This book has a everything you could possibly want, suspense, intrigue, well-developed characters, romance, and it truly has you guessing on who the bad guys really are, and can Mark clear his name before he is the next victim. I even enjoyed the softer side regarding an abused child. The message of faith is beautifully described.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. I couldn’t put it down. And I was totally blown away when the perpetrators were finally revealed. I kept on thinking I knew who the perpetrators were, I wasn’t even close. You truly have no idea until the very end.

I got this late so I was feeling rushed to read the book but I got it read with plenty of time because I couldn’t put it down!! I loved the last book that I read by this author and this was no different. It had great writing and great characters which were really opened up through the book to show the reader how they were growing in response to everything that was happening. As I was reading it, I felt like I was in the middle of all the drama and action going on in the book so I was on the edge of my seat. There was so many different things going on at the same time that it was action packed even if it was just two people eating lunch because you learned really important information. Loved it!!!

This is a pretty good medical thriller with a hint of romance. It starts with a suspenseful situation that builds throughout the novel. I thought the characters were well developed and the plot realistic. Readers learn much about medical procedure and the threats of malpractice suits. There was a good twist in the end I did not see coming. A good book for those who enjoy medical suspense with a Christian message included.

This was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. The suspense is great, but I also liked the elements of faith and the tiny bit of romance that was thrown in. I would have preferred a little more in the romance department. The relationship between the couple seemed faint and one dimensional. But this didn’t stop my enjoyment of the book. The medical jargon is spot on, but wasn’t overwhelming or too confusing for the non-medical person. The author writes flawed, but likeable characters. The clues are often misleading so I didn’t suspect the final ending. It was well done and definitely made me want to read another one.

I’m not one who just adores medical suspense, however, I absolutely LOVE Mabry’s books! I was once again immediately drawn into this book with the literal and figurative “bang.”

What makes me fall so hard for Mabry’s books? I think it’s because I know what I’m reading is factual and has legitimate medical terminology in it. With the factual information provided, it makes the story seem so real. I actually could really picture most of the things happening in real life.

I find it very fascinating when an author can suck me right into their story, provide factual information, get my imagination to run, and yet it is just a story.

Richard Mabry’s books never cease to amaze me. Within a matter of pages I was pulled in as the doctors deal with a hospital being held ransom by gunpoint because they want the hospital staff to save their friend, and we later find out that there’s more to it. It turns out the shooter is a member of the drug cartel, and they seek revenge on all the hospital staff involved in trying to save his friend. The people you think are bad, aren’t always and vice versa. In the midst of trying to stay alive, a romance and spiritual enlightenment are taking place. The book is fast paced, captivating and completely engrossing. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read more by Mabry.

The concept of the story in this book is great. The first chapter opens with a shooting in an Emergency Room, with three people left dead and an entire staff left shaken up. The victims turn out to be members of a famous drug cartel, and everyone involved becomes a target.

People start dropping like flies, and the police head down all the wrong trails to get to the ones involved. The cartel has infiltrated the police, the hospital, and more.

You can count on Richard Mabry’s novels to have three things: medicine and doctors are involved, there is a romance, and there is suspense. Fatal Trauma didn’t disappoint in those three arenas. The action begins in the ER of a Dallas hospital. A gun-waving drugged-up man pushes a wheelchair in through the doors demanding treatment for his brother who’s been shot—everybody dies if he doesn’t get help. ER doctor, Mark Baker, and ER nurse, Kelly Atkinson, and the rest of the staff are definitely in harm’s way. They can tell the victim is already dead, but have to attempt treatment until help arrives. A cop in the next cubby hears them talking, comes in and tells the gunman to give it up—whirling around, the man shoots and the patrolman shoots back, killing the gunman. All in six pages!
