  • ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’

What an incredibly powerful novel, so well written I felt as though I was there with Lily…a woman that married an abusive man and her journey in life. When her father died she was swept off her feet by a man who promised her the moon. What she got was far from it. The story tells how Lily escaped from that life. I thought she was very immature and didn’t wise up with all she’d been through but it really was a good read, fast paced and had a happy ending.

  • ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’

I read this book on vacation and it was hard to put it down to spend time with the family! I do wish that there may have been an option for Manny to get help. The perfect ending if you will, but that isn’t how life works itself out. Excellent book!

  • ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’ {LITFUSE}

I have to admit this book took some time to get into. I started to read it, put it down, picked it back up, put it down, etc. I finally plunged in, sat, and read the book. Of course, having 10 children it did have to be put down at times. It took me a few days to complete the entire book. But, once I got through the first few chapters I really started to be interested and want to know what was left to come.

I began to want to find out how Lily was doing, what she was thinking, why in the world did she do that?! And of course I was not happy when she married a man she really didn’t know. I kept saying surely she’ll listen. But of course she doesn’t. That would have ruined the story.

Her journey to find who she was and who she wants to be is one that is going to capture you.

  • ROSE CHANDLER JOHNSON’S ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’ REVIEW

This novel was a hard read for me. Not because it’s bad or anything like that. But due to the subject matter. If you have ever survived (yes, I use the word survived, because it was complete survival by the grace of God) an abusive relationship, then you can understand what I mean when I say that. Lily Rose marries a charming man who changes to his true form once they are wed. He is abusive towards her. I could definitely identify with this! All of the characters are well developed, and the first person voice makes this more like a private diary than a novel. Warning: There are a couple of curse words. Sex, rape, and violence are also attributes, though there are no graphic sex scenes or anything like that.

Hmm, this one was a very different and somewhat difficult read for me. The story starts off slow and at times I was tempted to put the book down but something kept me reading. About chapter 5 or 6 it really started to pick up. Though fiction novels are my favorite, this one almost sounded more like a memoir, but definitely a good one.

  • ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’ BY ROSE CHANDLER JOHNSON

Lily struggles to face the world after her father’s death, but there’s something compelling about her journey that makes My Father’s House fascinating. Characters make or break a story for me, and I have little patience for them when they seem to be continually making poor choices, as Lily often seemed to do in the beginning of the book; but Lily charmed me such that I turned page after page, reading quickly, intent on finding out her fate.

  • ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’

After first few chapters I really got into the story. I was for me a little confusing at first going from present to the past. And a little slow going reading through the backstory of college years and romance leading to the main story line. It truly is a book of facing ones circumstances and struggling through to survive and thrive. There is a little romance too. And a happy ending.

  • A STORY OF HOPE, EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T LISTEN . . . TO OTHERS OR YOURSELF!

My Father’s House, by Rose Chandler Johnson, is a very sad story, but it’s filled with realistic events and prayers through every circumstance. I found this to be an inspiring story about a young lady who only wanted to be loved and ended up with the short end of the stick. Fortunately, Lily had been loved enough by her father in her younger life that she comes to realize that a volatile relationship was not what she wanted for herself. Finding sanctuary in a home where she and her father had found solace in the years before her father died finally gives her the courage to make a new life for herself.

  • ROSE CHANDLER JOHNSON’S ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’

This is southern story with a lot of conflict going on (isn’t that the truth of us southerners?). Not my favorite read, as there are some blurred lines when it comes to character behaviors (in a Christian book). I was disappointed with the development of Lily as a whole.

My Father’s House by debut author Rose Chandler Johnson is an emotional, heartwarming, read with an underlying threat and a bit of mystery all wrapped up in a pretty little package. • ‘MY FATHER’S HOUSE’ BY ROSE CHANDLER JOHNSON

This book took me back to another place and time, when I, myself charged ahead without God’s approval and went against my parent’s advice landing me in a marriage that wasn’t God ordained. It reminded me why it is important for us to always allow God to direct our steps. While I wouldn’t change what I went through, I would’ve been saved lots of heartache.

Rose does a great job of showing arrogance in our defiance and how God uses that to bring us back to Him.

This was a great read, it had action and lots of drama. Just the way I like my books. I highly recommend it!

This is an excellent story! Rose writes in an engaging manner that keeps the story moving along at a fast pace. There is a bit of language in this story, but I felt like it was justified due to the character of the person who used it. While this is the story of an abusive relationship, it is also one of hope and finding peace when away from that relationship. The only thing I wasn’t thrilled about was that the main character didn’t avoid the appearance of jumping into another relationship when she was still married. I know I am being picky though.:) Otherwise, the story was excellent!

Southern fiction meets domestic drama meets a coming of age story in Rose Chandler Johnson’s debut novel, My Father’s House. At times the prose takes on an almost memoir-quality, as though Lily Rose herself is sitting in a rocking chair next to you on the front porch, recounting the events in her smooth Georgia drawl.

  • A GOOD BOOK, BUT NOT WHAT WE HAD HOPED FOR

The timeline of the tale is confusing when Cates tells of getting maried, suffering through a Detroit winter, and later having Thanksgiving dinner, but also claims that she met her husband-to-be one five months earlier. But the major flaw in this story is that it is tepid. The heroine’s journey isn’t all that noteworthy. Johnson is a good writer, and I hope her next novel has a plot and lead character worth her talents.

My Father’s House is an excellent choice for readers who want to envision the details of a story. Author Rose Chandler Johnson included many descriptions of the setting, making it easy to picture in the mind’s eye. Still, there are some strong themes (including some violence) presented in My Father’s House of which conservative readers should be aware.

  • AN ADRENALINE RUSH FROM BEGINNING TO END! INHALED THIS IN HOURS!

Even though the story line is familiar, I was captivated once things started down the dangerous path with Manuel. You would have thought that Lily would have learned a thing or two, but I can understand how desperate some become in search for love. This is truly a story of looking for love in all the wrong places. Even though her conscience tells her to run, she refuses to believe all the signs laid out in front of her from the beginning, especially advice from those she trusts the most until it is too late. I would rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars and while it is a Christian based novel, it isn’t too over the top that readers might be turned off by the religious undertones. It’s a lesson for all of us to be wise as serpents in the choice we make.
