  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ BOOK REVIEW

I love this cookbook. It holds the prettiness of The Pioneer Woman in that it’s truly a beautiful book in and of itself. If you are building a collection of “pretty” books for your kitchen, Gather Around the Amish Table is one you want to add. The recipes are simple and contain ingredients are things I either have on hand or can easily purchase at the store. The book contains great stories. It is fun reading the snippets regardless of what you decide to make.
Gather Around the Amish Table contains “treasured recipes and stories from Plain Communities”. In some ways it reminds me of the church and family reunion cookbooks I have in my cabinet, but contains a wonderfully professional touch that helps create a phenomenal resource!

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’

The book has beautiful photos and each recipe has engaging memories and thoughts, which I very much enjoyed reading. These paragraphs gave a real sense of the women from the Amish and Mennonite communities who had contributed the recipes. My favorite pumpkin recipe contributor noted that she always make these cookies six batches at a time because her family has nine people. If you are a cookbook fan — I am! — or looking for a gift for a bridal shower or Christmas, I highly recommend this. There’s lots of good cooking and reading here.

What a gorgeous, practical, and fun cookbook. Everything from making your own Homemade Root Beer to Homemade Baby Wipes. Okay, I won’t forget about Applesauce Raisin Cake or Seven-Layer Dinner.

This is a full colored cookbook with pictures of the many recipes. Also, several pictures of the Amish and Mennonite community. There is a lot of practical tips in the kitchen and heartwarming stories from the community.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’

This book was filled with delicious looking recipes with items that one would expect as being typical Amish fare to unique items. I loved how most of the recipes were pretty simple with ingredients one would have on hand or at least be able to get very easily. I was particularly fond of the stories before each recipe, they were enjoyable to read and made the cookbook all the more endearing. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ COOKBOOK, BY LUCY LEID

I fell in love with Gather Around the Amish Table Cookbook. Right now, I live in a fairly large Amish settlement, well several really. I am forever seeing Amish roadside stands, and at the stores, and even they have a spot next to the interstate. One of the things they are famous for, is their food.

Amish food is amazing! I love it! This would make a great gift this Christmas Season to the baker or cook in your family. I received this free in hopes of an honest review. All opinions are my own.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ BY LUCY LEID

    I love this cookbook!

It is very well organized with beautiful pictures throughout. Every couple of recipes contains a short story that relates in some way to the recipe. How fun it has been to read these! All of the recipes use fairly simple ingredients and the majority of the recipes are what I would describe as “down home” and “hearty family” recipes. We have 8 people in our family and I was pleased to discover that the majority of the recipes are just the right size to feed my crew. A lot of the main dishes are casserole based and the book includes a few unique (at least to me) recipes such as Little Spatzlein and Filling Balls.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ BY LUCY LEID: CHARMING RECIPES AND DELIGHTFUL STORIES!

Gather Around the Amish Table is a charming book filled with delicious recipes, delightful, color photography (a *must* in any cookbook) and engaging stories. The recipes are easy to follow, in fact my 12 year old enjoyed making Peanut Butter Granola and the rest of the family was happy to sample it when she was done! I personally can’t wait to try Elizabeth’s Soft Pretzels (they taste like Auntie Anne’s Pretzels!). There are a few fun extras “recipes” included in this book: Homemade Baby Wipes and Bird treats are also inside. With the colder weather just around the corner, my girls and I will be busy creating Bird Treats for our feathered friends! Gather Around the Amish Table would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift.

  • LAVISH BOOKSHELF REVIEW: ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’

The true charm of the Amish lifestyle is evident in a few recipes, too. I totally skipped the Pig Stomach recipe. No thanks! And I’m not going to cook my pumpkin for the pumpkin cookies when I can open a can. My favorite of all was on Page 259 which is a list of all dishes required for an Amish Barn Raising with “enough food to feed 180 men.”

Many of the recipes in this book are introduced by Lucy Leid. She relates anecdotes that express the relationships and culture of the Amish. In addition to great nostalgic recipes and charm, this cookbook is also filled with lovely photographs of the beautiful Amish countryside. Pictures of food mingle with gorgeous landscape scenery.

This cookbook would make a lovely gift for weddings and for Christmas.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE: TREASURED RECIPES AND STORIES FROM PLAIN COMMUNITIES’ BY LUCY LEID

Although Gather Around the Amish Table may have fewer recipes than some of those, it is a more professional, colorful publication. The recipe for oven baked chicken caught my eye when I first looked through the cookbook. A mixture of butter, crushed cornflakes and Parmesan cheese coats the chicken which then bakes in the oven. Mmm, I thought. I used to make something similar but haven’t in a long time. It was so easy and good. I’ve been making apple crisp since my early 4-H days but when we were having company for Saturday night supper a few weeks ago, I decided to use the recipe in Gather Around the Amish Table instead of digging out my old, battered recipe. Pretty similar except the Amish version adds a dash of nutmeg. Made with Melba apples, freshly picked in Bayfield Co, WI, this dessert was a hit. Basic cakes, filling casseroles, healthy soups, and even made from scratch puddings and custards. This book is chocked full of tried and true recipes that have been making families smile around the dinner table for years. Gather Around the Amish Table would make a special gift for anyone interested in this more simple culture, the people themselves, and of course, their favorite foods. I recieved a copy of this title from LitFuse for my honest review

I always find it a bit difficult to write a review for a cookbook as I’ve only had a short time to try out a few of the recipes, but in the case of this book, I have read all the stories, gone through all the recipes and even tried several of them out. There is a wide variety recipes here that will appeal to just about any cook. Some of my favorite are White Mountain Cake, Oatmeal Nut Sticky Buns, Coffee Ice Cream, Coffee Bars and Amish Macaroni Salad. • BOOK REVIEW | ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ BY LUCY LEID | COOKBOOK

OK… I may not have what it takes to be Amish but I’m pretty sure I can handle eating like the Amish! Of course I don’t have a garden to tend or acres of land to till, planet and tend to so I may have to find some clever ways to imitate the work they do to work off all those calories… otherwise my hips may have a fit on me. LOL!

Not too many people in today’s world have the time it takes to make every single thing their family eats from scratch.

More and more often, take-out or boxed meals is the norm… yes, even in our family… but with wonderful resources like this book, at least we have the opportunity to find some new recipes we can try out when we have the time or when we make the time for it anyway.

And the recipes inside pretty much ALL look amazing!

This cookbook is broken down in ten recipe sections: Breakfast, Breads & Spreads, Soups & Sandwiches & Pizza, Salads & Pickles, Vegetables & Side Dishes, Meats & Main Dishes, Cakes & Pies, Cookies, Desserts & Candy, and Snacks & Beverages & Extras. Photos of yummy foods and photos of the Amish are sprinkled throughout the pages. The Amish photos are a true joy to view.

Lucy shares short stories of life experiences that are fun to read. She also shares how much food is needed to serve 180 men at a barn raising. Her recipes are easy to make and the ingredients are not hard to obtain.

There are some really yummy desserts! This is a great cookbook with colorful pictures, easy to make recipes, and fun stories. My daughter fourteen-years-old daughter has enjoyed trying several of the recipes.

  • ONLY WISH THIS WAS A MUCH BIGGER BOOK BUT STILL LOVED ALL THE RECIPES INSIDE!

One of the things I most admire about the Amish and Mennonite communities besides their amazing sense of community and faith, but their love of cooking. I would love to sample some of their down home, all natural meals one day but for now, like most of us, I will take to trying my own hand based on recipes handed down from generation to generation from the Plain communities. My only complaint would be that this isn’t much bigger but I may have to find a way to subscribe to Die Botschaft myself and try and capture and sample all the wonderful goodness you would come to expect from an Amish or Mennonite home.

Recipes, lots and lots of mouth-watering recipes. The thing I noticed is they are all using ingredients I have in my home. A huge plus for me. My favorite thing about the book, is the snippets posted along with the recipes. Little stories sharing her family life, sharing memories connected to the recipes. My favorite snippet was when she stayed in the tree reading, because she thought her sister was calling her to help do chores, when she was calling her for homemade ice cream. Ouch! That had to hurt, but avoiding her work, cost her a bowl of homemade ice cream.

  • A CHARMING COOKBOOK!

Gather Round the Amish Table by Lucy Leid is a unique cookbook containing interesting recipes and sweet stories from the author. Many of the recipes combine ingredients that I would never have dreamed of putting together. Using this book, I made some of the best soft pretzels I’ve ever had. And using that same recipe, I also made some killer garlic knots! This cookbook is loaded with delicious soup recipes and some recipes that I’m wary of trying because of what I believe to be odd ingredient combinations. There are lots of breads and desserts and casseroles.

Honestly, my idea of Amish cooking has changed considerably as a result of reading through this book. I figured their cuisine would be as plain as their costume. But that is not the case. This book was quite a surprise.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’

I enjoyed reading GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE. We initally tried two recipes in here, the same day it arrived. We made the Lettuce and Carrot Salad on page 87 for lunch.

We made some substitutions to the recipe. It didn’t specify what kind of vinegar to use–I guess Apple Cider Vinegar, but we used Balsamic. It also called for cream, we used Half & Half.

We also made the Best Ever Meatloaf on page 122.

We made scalloped potatoes (recipe not included in this book) and buttered green beans with it. A wonderful meal!

Some of the recipes include short tidbits or stories about the recipe and some of the memories attached to it. There are also lots of Amish pictures included, in full color, of everything from horses and buggies to barn-raisings. I see a lot of delicious meals…

  • LUCY LEID’S ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’

When we received the cookbook, my son started perusing it right away and marked several recipes for us to try. I love the little stories that were shared with several of the recipes – some talked about specific memories around the recipe or a story around the source of the recipe. Stories and anecdotes about the food help create a connection and pique interest in trying the recipe.

We have not been disappointed in any of the recipes that we have made. Based on our experience, we will definitely be spending the next few months working our way through a number of the other recipes that we have marked in the cook book. There are several recipes that based on our flavor preferences we aren’t likely to try, but I’ve never found a single cook book where every recipe appealed.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ BY LUCY LEID

If you’ve ever wanted to know more about Amish cooking, Gather Around the Amish Table is your go-to source. This collection of recipes is as varied as it is drool-worthy.

That’s one of the best things about this book: the variety of the recipes. Leid, the woman who pulled this book together, didn’t write them all – instead, she polled family and friends to find the best of the best. These recipes not only cover a wide range of food and styles, but they also vary in the amount that each makes. A recipe that makes a few hundred doughnuts can be found right beside a recipe that serves four. Anyone could find recipes to suit the size of their gathering from this book.

  • This was a lovely cookbook filled with full color photographs and little snippets from the author about each of the recipes and the stories behind them.

One nice thing about this cookbook is that there aren’t a ton of weird expensive ingredients and everything is super easy to make. my favorite recipe was the one for the 8 minuted cheesecake, the only thin that I did differently was that I topped it with sugared pineapple and raspberries.

Overall, I thought it was a great cookbook, and I look forward to trying more of the recipes from Mrs. Leid and her family!

  • BOOK REVIEW/RECIPE REVIEW ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ BY LUCY LEID

Lucy Leid subscribes to the Die Botschaft, one of the newspapers written by Plain people. She herself is an Old Order Mennonite. She asked readers of the newspaper to
send her recipes, this cookbook is a compilation of some she received.

All of the recipes do not have pictures, in fact some the pictures are not food, but depictions of Amish living. The recipes are written clearly and are easy to understand. The cookbook is divided into ten chapters – Breakfast, Meats & Main Dishes, and Cookies, name a few. Read More On Blog>>

  • ONE OF THE NICEST RECIPE BOOKS I HAVE EVER RECEIVED

I was so excited to receive this book to review. I grew up in an area of Western NY where many Amish and Mennonite lived. When I got married, I moved to an area of Indiana where many Amish and Mennonite live. You can imagine the chances I have had to try their fabulous, down-home cooking over the years.

This cookbook is absolutely wonderful. It is full of traditional recipes we all associate with Mennonite cooks. The book is divided into sections, making it easy to find a main dish, side dish or specific kind of dessert. What I really like are the wonderful memories you get to read that are associated with specific recipes. It makes them more personal. I can relate to that as I have many recipes that are special to me and my family.

The photographs in the book are just lovely and makes me think of the many drives we have made through the Mennonite and Amish communities near us. But the best thing are all the wonderful recipes. They are easy to read and follow. There are even extra little tips included in some. Many are simple and traditional and a few things are thrown in that we “English” may not know much about.

This is a wonderful cookbook and I think it would make a great gift for a new or old bride!

  • RECIPES AND CONVERSATION

Snippets of Amish life, scrumptious recipes, appetizing photos — those are the things you will find in Gather around the Amish Table.

Lucy Leid, an Old Order Mennonite, has collected recipes from a variety of Plain cooks and compiled them into a delightful book. The stories provided with many of the recipes are very conversational and give you the feel of sitting at the kitchen table and visiting with the cooks while they prepare meals for their family and friends. The dishes, for the most part, are simple fare, calling for every-day ingredients common to most of our pantries. (Although I’m not too sure about the roasted pig stomach!)

I’ve not yet tried any of the recipes, but several of them are on my “must-try” list for the very near future.

  • NOT JUST A COOKBOOK

I have gotten to try a few recipes with the fresh fruits and veggies of the end of summer, but I have quite a few more on my list to try. One thing I really like about the recipes included in the book are that they mostly use staple pantry ingredients. I can pick almost any recipe and have all of the ingredients on hand. No crazy shopping lists or jars of something that you just need a teaspoon of and then have nothing to do with the rest of it. The book had 10 different categories of recipes. Everything from breakfast, to salads, meat, and pies. And on many of the pages there are short stories by Leid and other Amish contributors explaining their personal connections to the recipes.

  • THE HEART OF ANY CULTURE—THE KITCHEN TABLE

Gather Around the Amish Table would be a fabulous gift for anybody who is fascinated by the simple life of the Amish.

This is a softcover cookbook, filled with full-color photography and engaging personal stories, and every page highlights the good food that can be found in Amish kitchens.
When you work hard and tend the land well, your reward is the bounty of the seasons. Judging from these recipes, Amish cooks know how to use that bounty, making their meals both nourishing and enjoyable.

There are recipes for any day of the year and almost any skill level, because the contributors ranged from young Amish girls to their kitchen-wise grandmothers.

So next time you need a present for your favorite Amish-wanna-be, consider this cookbook.

  • I find it delightful. The recipes are (mostly) simple, “old fashioned”…like my grandmother may have made. Granted, we are vegetarian, but I have long been able to “tweak” recipes, using vegetarian substitutes for most meats in non-vegetarian recipes.

I enjoyed the short stories throughout, sharing how the recipe came to be, or how it’s been passed down through generations, etc. There are even little helpful tips throughout.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ — COOKBOOK REVIEW & AMISH BAKING BASKET GIVEAWAY

I love cookbooks! Even in this day when you can find so many recipes online I still take my cookbooks out and pour over them often. This book includes some fabulous recipes but the real treasure is the little stories included with each one.

Most of the recipes are straight forward and call for ingredients that are easily found. Occasionally you will find a recipe calling for a ‘canned’ item – but I think those are few and easily modified.

  • YUM!

Amish food is so very delicious. They use basic ingredients but make really unique dishes that I never would have even thought of. Most of the recipes have a little story to go with them. Simple instructions, such as: wrap leftover pizza in foil for kids to take to school so they can heat them up on the wood stove. This made me smile because I grew up with a wood stove. There are also instructions on how to feed 180 men for a barn raising, you have to appreciate communities such as that! Anyway the book has given me new ideas, such as different chowders, desserts, and ways to cook potatoes.
The only thing is that there really aren’t very many pictures.

  • A MUST-HAVE COOKBOOK FOR EVERY KITCHEN

I enjoyed this book. It was nice to read the stories that went along with some of the recipes. Another thing I like is that everything was made from scratch and they had to adapt the recipes for the book. Meaning the recipe would say add enough of this to taste and cook until done. So each of the recipes had to be tested so they could come up with the right measurements and cooking times. I tried three of the recipes from this book and they were each a hit. We had Huntington Chicken – it was like homemade macroni and cheese with chicken mixed into it to make a meal. Very good. The other two recipes I tried were Moist Chocolate Cake and Richmond Frosting. – the cake was super moist and the frosting extra smooth and chocolatety. I liked that they were sweet but not overly sweet, just right. I look forward to trying out many more recipes in this book. A must have cookbook for your kitchen.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ BY LUCY LEID – BLOG TOUR AND COOKBOOK REVIEW

I loved reading through the introductions to the various recipes and I must admit many of them brought me back to my mother’s kitchen. She was a true believer in the casserole; with four children and not a lot of money she knew how to make a meal stretch. My only issue with many of the recipes is the heavy use of cans of cream of mushroom or chicken soup. I simply don’t use these salt laden ingredients so were I to make the recipes I’d substitute with homemade variations.

  • TASTY AMISH RECIPES!!

I was excited to read this wonderful cookbook filled with stories. There are a ton of recipes that I can’t wait to make. I already did make the Cherry Coffee Cake and Aunt Fannie’s Chocolate Chip Cookies. There are a ton more recipes that I can’t wait to try. The hard part was that not all the recipes were made by the author so there weren’t stories talking directly about the recipe so it didn’t say I liked these cookies because they were cakey, chewy, crunchy or some other description, although the stories were super good and had me reading each page of the cookbook even if I wasn’t interested in the recipe. I hope to enjoy lots of great recipes out of this book for a long time!! I hope that you pick up this book and check out the great recipes, pictures, and stories.

  • ‘GATHER AROUND THE AMISH TABLE’ {BOOK REVIEW + GIVEAWAY}

This cookbook combines two of my favorite things…food and the Amish. In the past few years, we’ve had quite a few Amish families move in around our area. You just can’t beat pies, cookies and fry pies baked from scratch. So when I saw this book, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it!

My favorite thing about this book was that I have most of these ingredients already in my freezer or pantry! Lucy Leid shows delicious ways to make ordinary into a new family favorite.

As for the recipes themselves, most of them were easy and the ingredients called for are the plain and old fashioned ingredients that most home cooks are likely to have in their kitchens. My daughter and I quickly picked out several to try, and before we knew what we were doing, we had made several recipes, including Strawberry Longcake, Alma’s Breakfast Casserole and Applesauce Raisin Cake. We also have many more pages earmarked with recipes to try. We have not found anything that we’ve made yet that was not delicious. I also love that so many things that I have made from this cookbook so far use my beloved 9 x 13 pan. I also love that the recipes are so easy. It means that I can invite the children to help me in the kitchen and help them use this book to build their skill.
