Letitia Suk invites readers to take a “Getaway with God”

How a simple day away can recharge your soul and transform your life

11/29/2016 || Seattle: Our spiritual lives can often resemble our cell phones at the end of the day. The battery is run down and in need of a charge. Sometimes we are down to 2% before we even realize it. It’s important we reconnect to our power source. Even a single day set aside to recharge fully with God can do wonders for the soul. In Getaway with God: The Everywoman’s Guide to Personal Retreat (Kregel Publications/ November 27, 2016/ISBN 978-0825444159/$14.99), Letitia Suk offers women a step-by-step, no-excuses guide to getting back in sync with God.

Many women are desperate for more time with God, but with the demands of modern life, simply getting up earlier in the day to fit in a longer devotion is no longer a viable — or fulfilling — option. Every now and then, concentrated time alone with the Father is just what the soul needs to reconnect with Him and refresh for the journey ahead. Getaway with God provides step-by-step guidance and the necessary tools to enable any woman to plan time away — whether a work day, a weekend, or even a full week — on any budget.

“Time after time, year after year, I come away filled with a renewed sense of purpose, clarity of vision, trust in God’s ability to untie all the knots of my life and an overwhelming sense of being loved after my getaways,” Suk shares. “Many of us are familiar with the relationship boost a getaway with our spouse or family can provide, and a getaway with God has the same results for our souls.”

While the idea of pulling away for a night or two might sound enticing, the practicalities of such a venture are enough to stop most women before they even begin. Suk addresses many of the common questions that arise, such as:

—Where should I go?
—How long should I stay?
—Will it cost a lot of money?
—Should I fast?
—What would I do? Pray the whole time?
—Do I need a structured plan?

With a warm and inviting voice, Suk walks readers through exploring the type of retreat they need most (restorative, listening or goal-setting) and then provides all the details needed to plan and implement it, including templates offering ideas of what to do each hour.

The second half of Getaway with God focuses on designing a five-day life-review retreat, including guided questions and ways to bring the retreat home. The longer retreats are a way to reflect on the past, present and future, especially after significant life transitions such finishing school, job changes or children leaving home for college. The practical appendices provide optional retreat exercises, tips on how to change your picture of prayer and how to find retreat centers nationwide, as well as a checklist for what to bring.

Suk’s soothing and mentoring style will assure readers that sometimes the best thing they can do is retreat, and no matter their season of life, the time for retreat is now.

Advance Praise

“As women, we can get so caught up in taking care of others and in our to-do lists that we lose track of nurturing the most important relationship of all — the one with God. This book is a gentle, beautiful invitation to say yes to the Lord’s invitation to come with him to a quiet place. Letitia provides step-by-step instructions to those who desire them, but also encourages women to find their own retreat path. She shares her own journey with humility and grace. It’s a book any woman at any stage of life or spirituality will learn from and savor.”

~ Melanie Rigney, author of Blessed Are You: Finding Inspiration from Our Sisters in Faith

Getaway with God taps our deep longing for space of our own. In a world with lots of noise and little quiet, the personal retreat becomes a countercultural — and life-giving — choice. Let Letitia Suk walk you through your doubts, fears, questions, and reticence.”

Suggested interview questions

—You introduce Getaway with God with a great analogy. How are our spiritual lives similar to a cell phone at the end of the day?

—What was it about the group retreats you had been on that led you to decide to take your first personal retreat more than 35 years ago?

—At first you had your own questions about what a personal retreat would entail. From your own experience, what exactly is a personal retreat?

—Why does everyone need to take the time to go on a retreat alone?

—Tell us a little bit about your new book. Is Getaway with God a precise, step-by-step guide for personal retreats?

—When people hear the word “retreat,” they often think of mountain cabins, church groups and long drives to get there. Is it possible to take a personal retreat without going far or spending a lot of money?

—What other reasons do women give not to take time away? What advice do you give for eliminating excuses?

—In Getaway with God, you offer a “menu” of retreat types. We are some of the options you discuss?

—How structured does your time away need to be?

—Share with us the rhythm of the Sabbath and how we can observe it, even in today’s fast-paced life?

—The Bible promises when we walk in obedience to God, the enemy will try to thwart us. How can we combat the discouragement such attacks can bring?

—The second part of Getaway with God outlines a five-day life-review retreat. How often do you recommend taking one of these long, intensive retreats?

—Once someone has taken a personal retreat, how can he or she hold onto the refreshment upon return to the hectic noise of day-to-day life?

A very cute book to remind us how to find time for God in our lives.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received this book. I was expecting a devotional. What I got was a mini devotional and then some. The book is about actually planning your own ‘Getaway’.

We all need time for ourselves whether we realize it or not. Whether it’s 20 minutes on Sunday evening with no family bothering you and a nice hot bubble bath. Or a weekend away these times refresh our souls and our spirits.

This book is a wonderful resource that offers women different ways to have retreats with a God. Knowing that each woman’s circumstance is different, the author provides solutions for various situations and budgets. As the new year approaches, now is the perfect time to plan a getaway with God. Whether it is just for a moment, or for an entire weekend, God desires for us to set aside time with Him to refocus our minds and hearts. This is a must read if you are planning a retreat in the future.

This book is a quick read, very encouraging, and a great resource for anyone who wants to take a deeper step into their walk with God.

This book is an easy read and has a lot of tips of how to make a way for one to actually spend more time with God. I believe we all know how to do it, we just don’t make the time to do actually spend time with God. That’s what this book is about, actually putting our knowledge into action and getting alone with God!

Getaway with God is a short book and a quick read (just about 150 pages), but it packs a punch in its pages. Letitia has a soothing yet straightforward writing style that is easy and enjoyable to read. I’ve never gone on any type of solo retreat (just a yearly marriage retreat with my church), but this book makes me want to break out of my box, so to speak, and give it a try.

This book was a much needed reminder that making time to get away from the pressures of life and spending some time with the Lord is much needed. I loved how it focused on taking a personal retreat to be with the Lord and renewing ones heart and spirit, because it is so easy to get down with the day to day responsibilities and have ones walk with the Lord take the back burner. Filled with practical and excellent advice this book was a great and refreshing read for this tired, busy Mom.

After reading through Letitia Suk’s Getaway with God, I now see why some of my friends have been after me to do a weekend silent retreat. In this title, she walks through not just the WHY, but the HOW of a personal retreat. By personal retreat, she means just that: YOU alone with God. So this is NOT a large group retreat with a bunch of fellowship.

I like that the material is presented in a religious manner but one of personal heart to heart matter. Women can’t give out of empty cisterns whether to their family, friends, works, etc. When we make and take the time to get away with God, we can be refreshed, renewed, gain a new perspective and perhaps a new direction in life where God is leading.

I have never really thought about having a practical how-to guide for taking a personal retreat with the Lord but that is what this book is and it’s great! Both women that are new in their faith and seasoned believers will all benefit from Suk’s experiences and practical advice. After reading this book, I am empowered to start planning my own getaway with God and I have the ideas and tools needed to carry it out.

Written by Cummins Life on December 15, 2016

This book is exactly what it says it will be: a guide to personal retreats, getaways with God. She has great ideas of where to go on personal retreats from bed-and-breakfasts to hotels to retreat centers. (I like our cabin at 9,000 ft. in the Rocky Mountains!) Also, she includes several ideas of what to include in your retreat—journaling, reading, praying, taking walks/hikes, enjoying nature, etc. Many of these things I’ve done. Every time God meets me, and I come home with a renewed sense of purpose and a little better understanding of His character.

I really like this book … but more than simply liking it, I found it to be an excellent resource for strengthening our relationship with God, growing closer to Him, and finding spiritual renewal. The word “getaway” is key here, for it involves removing ourselves from all that would distract us and spending one-on-one time with God. Easy to accomplish? Not really. Necessary and rewarding? Definitely! This is an important book for everyone. If you want to plan a personal retreat, this is a wonderful resource. If the idea of a personal retreat isn’t even on your radar, reading it just might change your mind.

Written by The Power of Words on December 15, 2016

This book was not exactly what I expected, but I liked it! This book is what I would call “very usable”. It gives you step-by-step instructions on how to do a “getaway with God”. But I think really you could use this for so much more. There are some great ideas in here for a woman’s retreat, Mother/Daughter weekend, anything really! It doesn’t have to be just a solo getaway.

Written by Wall-to-wall books on December 15, 2016

Letitia Suk shows you that a personal retreat can be for different reasons and even allows one that is for rest and relaxation. But she also shows how a retreat is meant to be a time to focus intently on God. I liked how she gave Bible study suggestions as well as physical tips like napping and taking walks.

An easy read, this book is a great tool for those looking to spend more time with God. Many women long to getaway, but have no clue how to make it happen. Taking the time to read this book, the author gently guides the reader in the steps needed to make it a possibility. The cover is pretty, nice and inviting. Restful, peaceful, and pleasing to the eye, the cover image is just the beginning of what the reader will find when purchasing this book. Whether for yourself or a gift, this book would make a great read for this winter season. Take your time working through the pages; plan a Getaway with God this spring or summer.

The book reads like a chat with a friend, and while informational in style, is a easy and enjoyable book to read. I was impressed with the wealth of information she was able to share in a short space without making me feel overwhelmed or bored.

Letitia shares her heart and her own personal experiences with retreats in her book, Getaway with God: The Everywoman’s Guide to Personal Retreat. This book is divided into two main sections, the first discussing why the reader should take a personal retreat. The whys can vary from woman to woman, but ultimately Letitia stresses the point that is necessary for the well-being of the woman, personally, and also her family.

Written by Moments on December 11, 2016

Letitia Suk approaches the subject of getting away from it all and taking a personal retreat to focus on you and your relationship with God. As a stay-at-home mom, I feel like this is something that most moms could use, but we often can’t find the time or money to do something like this. Letitia talks about those things and she is really encouraging in the different types of retreats that she suggests.

Reading this book is like sitting down with a good friend and discussing all God has done in our lives. I love how the author is so open and honest and shares from her heart.

I really liked this book and am planning on doing my own retreat. This book gives you a deep desire to spend time with God alone.

Getaway with God is a book I honestly had no clue if I would like it or not. If you are into retreats, or want to create a retreat this would be the best book for you , but if you like me and like devotionals, and short but sweet studies you can do in 5 min. or so, then this is not the right book for you.

Suk compares a retreat to “snuggling up to God and letting Him love on you.” (p.21) And it isn`t as daunting as you might think with this book as your guide. It is really well laid out with lots of practical advice and plenty of options since one size doesn`t fit all when it comes to personal retreats.
