God Bless Us Every One by Eva Marie Everson

Everything is changing for Charlie this Christmas after a misunderstanding causes her to lose her job, so she decides to return to Grandma Sis, who raised Charlie as her own, in Eva Marie Everson’s God Bless Us Every One. When Charlie arrives, Sis immediately puts her granddaughter to work behind the scenes of the local school’s Christmas play. Charlie prickles at working with Dustin Kennedy, the drama teacher and her old crush from schooldays, but is even more put out at that the choice of the Dickens’ classic for the holiday performance. Will Charlie learn about trust, faith, and forgiveness and the needs of people in their own community?

God Bless Us Every One (Abingdon Press, September 2016)

Charlene Dixon—called Charlie by family and friends—is devastated at the recent loss of her job.

For the last five years, the twenty-seven-year-old has blossomed as the activities director of an exclusive all-girls school. But when a misunderstanding with the headmistress leads to a pink slip right before the holidays, Charlie packs up her dreams and returns to her grandmother, Sis, who raised Charlie as her own in the mountains of North Carolina.

When Charlie arrives—broken and confused—Sis immediately puts her granddaughter to work behind the scenes of the local school’s Christmas play, A Christmas Carol. Charlie prickles at working with Dustin Kennedy, the drama teacher and her old crush from schooldays, but is even more put out at that the choice of the Dickens’ classic for the holiday performance. When she discovers her estranged father’s involvement her world turns on its head once more. But when Sis and Dustin encourage her to take a deeper look at the story behind A Christmas Carol, Charlie learns about trust, faith, and forgiveness and the needs of people in their own community.

  • A CHRISTMAS SPIRIT INVOKING, HEART-WARMING TALE!

This was a pretty cute story! I found myself adoring Charlie’s sweet Grandma and blushing alongside Charlie every time her childhood crush showed up on the scene. The sassy, fun relationship between grandmother and granddaughter left a warmth in my heart that has me ready for all things wintry and snuggly and Christmasy. Add in some unexpected twists and turns, and you get such a sweet Christmas story of forgiveness, hope, and love.

  • IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS WITH ‘GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE’ REVIEW

One of my favorite things to do during the Holiday Season is curl up with a good book and a cup of hot cocoa. Settled into my favorite chair by the window, I can spend hours caught up in a good story. God Bless Us Every One by Eva Marie Everson fulfills the “good story” part of that equation. This book is set in today’s time period, and features references to pop culture of today-such as Josh Groban singing Christmas music over a store’s speaker system. It is a refreshing look at Charles Dickens A Christmas Carole, with frequent references to Dickens. Even the name of the main character, Charlie Dixon, is a twist of Charles Dickens.

  • ‘GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE’ BY EVA MARIE EVERSON {A LITFUSE BOOK BLOG TOUR & REVIEW}

Through a theme of the difficulties of letting go of the past, a concern for those less fortunate, and the importance of family, we see a reflection of Charles Dicken’s classic story, A Christmas Carol. The relationship between Charlie and her dad parallel that of Charles Dickens and his father. Author Eva Everson leads into each chapter with a quote from the classic tale which added a nostalgic touch to this modern story.

First let me say I had no idea that Eva lives in Casselberry, Florida. That’s where I call home. Small world, huh?!

This is a perfect Christmas book. Loosely based on the book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

It’s a light, quick read, I stayed up late last night finishing it. What I loved about the book was the estrangement Charlie and her father have and how Eva worked hope, forgiveness, and restoration into the story. There is nothing more perfect for Christmas than forgiveness, hope, and restoring relationships.

    I highly recommend this book!

  • ‘GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE’ BY EVA MARIE EVERSON: BOOK REVIEW

The concept was really promising. The execution? Well, it didn’t exactly thrill me. It felt like a trite, cliché, redundant story. My favorite part was probably the main character’s relationship with her grandmother who raised her. Sweet parental-type relationships always make me happy. It was also cute that she called her grandmother “Sis” because that was different and I enjoyed it.

  • GREAT CHRISTMAS BOOK~

What a fun book. I was so excited to sit down and dig into it. It grabbed me at the first sentence. I was a little afraid it may be just the same Christmas story we have all heard over and over. That certainly was not the case. This is one holiday book you won’t want to miss. I rate this book 5 stars. I really enjoyed it.

  • GREAT FOR CHRISTMAS

This was a fun book to read and I think it would be perfect for the Christmas season when you’re super busy but you’d like to read a book.

The story line was good and I liked how she used parts of Dickens A Christmas Carol to tie into her story.

There was also a bit of history about Dickens and the writing of his story.

If you’re looking for a book to get you into the Christmas spirit (when the time comes!) perhaps you’d enjoy this one.

This is a rather fun read for me. The all-girls school in which Charlie starts out is located in a part of Florida with which I have been acquainted nearly all my life, since my grandparents moved there when they retired, and now my parents live in the house which my grandparents built.

I like the glimpses into the past in both Charlie’s and Dustin’s lives, and how God works to bring them to the present and give them strength and courage to face the future.

Between each chapter is a quote from Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol, which nicely ties it to this story. I’d recommend God Bless Us Every One to anyone who enjoys a good Christmas time story.

  • ‘GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE’

The author used the story to draw parallels to A Christmas Carol. Woven throughout the story were the themes of faith, forgiveness, redemption, and trust. The romance between the young couple was sweet, authentic, and clean. While on the surface, the story was short and light-hearted, there were some deeper elements that could make the reader contemplative. Overall, this was a fun little story that I’ll read again closer to Christmas. I think it would make a great gift for someone who enjoys Christian fiction.

  • ‘GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE’ (A CONTEMPORARY CHRISTMAS CAROL) BY EVA MARIE EVERSON (CHRISTMAS NOVELLA) [REVIEW & GIVEAWAY]

I love that the setting of God Bless Us Every One is in my home state of North Carolina. The little town of Testament (fictional) is nestled in the mountainous area of Morganton (a real place). The characters are real, down-to-earth folks with real life issues, real likes and dislikes, real stuff happening in their live.

This contemporary story runs a bit parallel to Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; in fact each chapter begins with a meaty quote from Dickens. The reader will soon learn that Charlie’s (female protagonist in story) father, John, is in prison. Note please that Charles Dickens’ father’s name was John and he was imprisoned in debtor’s prison when Charles Dickens was a boy.

God Bless Us Every One is an interesting contemporary twist on an old story. Unfortunately, I didn’t connect with many of the characters, as they all seemed a bit shallow to me. I wanted to like Charlene and Sis but their relationship appeared awkward, at best. I’d categorize this book as more of a novella and that’s perhaps why the characters lacked the depth that I typically prefer in a story. I wanted to hear more about Dusty’s wife and son, Charlene’s mom and dad, as well as Charlene’s grandmother. I was left with more questions than answers after finishing this book.
