Where Evie’s life is stream-lined, Jack’s approach to living is moment-by-moment. The Hearts We Mend (Zondervan, March 2016)

Planning and Post-It notes are the epitome of Evie’s life. But when she meets Jack, her life gets more than a little complicated.

Thirteen years ago, Evie’s firefighter husband was killed in the line of duty, leaving her to raise their young son, Cody, alone. Now, Cody is marrying the love of his life, and as he packs up his belongings, the house feels as empty as Evie’s heart. But for all her planning and mad organizational skills, Evie could never have anticipated the dramatic shift her life is about to make.

Tattooed, rough-around-the-edges Jack raises quite a few eyebrows in the tight-knit community of Banister Falls. Where Evie’s life is stream-lined, Jack’s approach to living is moment-by-moment. But as Evie gets drawn into Jack’s world—a world that isn’t as safe or predictable as the one she’s worked so hard to create—he challenges her to open her eyes to the problems outside the walls of the church.

Jack doesn’t make Evie feel comfortable, but he definitely makes her feel something. Something she hasn’t felt since Max passed away—or, maybe ever. Because even though Jack isn’t anything like her late husband, he just might be everything she needs.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

The biggest thing I appreciate about Springer’s writing is how realistic it is. She doesn’t gloss over the sometimes harsh realities of life, or fill the book with eye rolling cliches. Rather, she weaves a story of love and growth among difficult subject matter in a way that will touch your heart and cause you to reexamine yourself.

Loved it and can’t wait to read more!

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ ~ REVIEW

The Hearts We Mend is such an EXCELLENT read! It is book 2 in the Banister Falls Novels. The Dandelion Field was book 1 and was excellent and left me hoping for another book! I was thrilled to read this one for sure!! It is one of those books where you feel like you’ve just moved into the neighborhood and have met all of your neighbors and already love each one of them!

I LOVE Evie and Jack! They both cherish their families and together they teach each other how to step out of their comfort zones and see things from a whole new perspective! As they do their feelings for one another grow, but can they let go of their past? Can Evie let go and move on since having lost her husband, Max? Evie has lived in their town for a VERY long time! She has many friendships with Max’s friends,

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

I love books in a series that pick up right where the last left off. This story is no exception.

It’s not always an “easy” story, which makes it that much more realistic. The author has done a fabulous job with her characters and you really can get into the place of the story. Great read!

Can I just start off by saying, how gorgeous the cover is! Oh, my! It looks like a movie cover. It grabs the attention for all the right reasons.

Now, on to the story. I fell in love with The Dandelion Field last year. It was one of my most favorite stories of the year. It was left in a way where I thought it was a standalone book, and I hoped that there would be more. Thankfully there is!

  • BLOG TOUR AND BANISTER FALLS SERIES GIVEAWAY! REVIEW OF ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER!

I took a chance on a new-to-me author and was pleasantly surprised by The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer. I would describe her style as a mix between Denise Hunter and Colleen Coble. Oddly enough, they’re all published by the same publisher and might possibly have the same editor, or as least acquisitions team that likes the same kind of writing/voice/story.

I did not read the first book in this series, which caused a little confusion at first. But not much. There were a lot of characters, but they were all delightful to read about as they interacted with the two main characters Evie and Jack.

I like lots of romantic intensity in novels, and this book was more on the “average romance” level rather than the “highly romantic, I think I’m going to swoon multiple times throughout”. Despite my want of more intense love scenes, this was a very well-written novel. I would recommend it to any avid reader looking for a new contemporary romance author to try out.

I love to read. Spring is here and summer is right around the corner. I love to read by the pool. The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer is a perfect book to start my spring off right! It is a very easy read. I love the characters – Evie and Jack and wish there was another book with them in it to read next. • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’

This was my first Kathryn Springer book and my first visit to Banister Falls, If you know me, you know I usually take my love and romance with a bit of zombification, alien intrusion or ghostly possession. Yet whenever there’s a fireman involved, I tend to get a bit squishy. In this tale, Evie Bennett is a 25-year old widow and single mom. She’s also the Women’s Ministry Director, so she’s used to telling women how they need to step out on faith and be bold about it. She’s a woman in control and knows what to expect… until she meets Jack….

Every once in a while you stumble across a book that you might not normally read, but then in the middle of it you realize that it has fast become a favorite. Such is the case with my latest read, The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer.

It was really an interesting story full of life, the reality, the horrors but also the abundance and enjoyment. If I could give it more than five stars I would but alas, five will have to do. Excellent book Mrs. Springer!!

At the end of the day, I cannot sing Kathryn’s praises loudly enough with regard to this book. It is so touching, so emotionally heavy, so inspiring, and I couldn’t help but love it immensely. I am so thankful that I have a copy of this novel, as I know I will be reading it time and time again. I have to give it all five bookshelves, because there honestly isn’t any other option, and you can bet on the fact that it has a permanent place on my all-time favorites list. The Hearts We Mend is a perfect follow-up novel to The Dandelion Field. Kathryn Springer returns her readers to the town of Banister Falls and gives Evie Bennett a much-needed second chance.Throughout the book, the interactions are endearing, the romance is sweet and heartwarming, and the spiritual growth through fear and insecurity is encouraging. I absolutely loved The Hearts We Mend and would heartily recommend it to readers of contemporary fiction. It’s worth it!

  • RECOMMENDED SECOND-CHANCE ROMANCE

I thought The Hearts We Mend was excellent, a great sequel to the challenging and recommended The Dandelion Field. I loved all the characters, especially Lily, and Jack’s unorthodox neighbours. And Jack was the perfect hero, the way he brought Evie out of the shell no one even realised she was in. I especially liked the way the Christian themes were shown in the way Jack reached out to his neighbours. Recommended.

  • BOOK REVIEW: ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’

As far as the romantic aspects of The Hearts We Mend are involved, this book has it all. A hero that is both strong and tender and a heroine who longs for more from life and love. There is instant chemistry between Jack and Evie — a reaction from these two seemingly opposite personalities that will have readers sighing with satisfaction. But The Hearts We Mend doesn’t just touch the heart, it touches the soul. These characters love God and the people who are put in their paths. Jack is not just tender and gentle and loving with Evie, but with the curmudgeon that lives upstairs, the menacingly rough youth that lives in the neighborhood and the lonely and isolated that surround him. What a great example of a romantic character — one that loves God first and naturally extends that love. Jack is by far the best romantic hero I have read in a long, long time. Real life issues are explored in The Hearts We Mend and as with life, not everything is tied up in a pretty package. Real life is messy and can hurt, and this novel shows the reality of poor choices and the impact they have even on innocent lives, making this book perfect for book clubs. The novel is written in a third person, omniscient style that lets the reader in on the hurts, hopes and dreams of its characters. I welcomed it’s casual and sometimes light-hearted style.

  • HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL IN THIS KATHRYN SPRINGER NOVEL

Jack’s character is reminiscent of the so many misunderstood and misjudged people in our society, who are immediately judged by virtue of their looks or appearance. But nobody can really know the Jacks of this world unless they take the chance to step inside his shoes and live his life. We, as a people, need a lot of growing up to do in terms of dealing with and judging people like Springer’s Jack Vale.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER {A LITFUSE BOOK BLOG TOUR & REVIEW}

  • SECOND CHANCE FOR THESE OPPOSITES

While the synopsis alludes to a familiar opposites attract storyline, these characters diverge from the archetypes of good girl (or in this case, woman) meets rebel man and falls in love in spite of her better judgement. Both Evie and Jack have let their past influence how they live in the present and plan for the future. For Evie she has withdrawn behind a wall of ordered self-protection, whereas Jack has learned to live with abandon. Each has a portion of what the other need, and together they realize that living to either extreme is actually keeping them from full contentment and joy. Their love story is a heartfelt look at second chances that is both thoughtful and entertaining.

  • EVEN BETTER THAN BOOK ONE!

Not only did I love the romance between Evie and Jack, but I also enjoyed Evie’s transformation into a strong, independent woman who began pursuing the dreams God placed on her heart.

Ultimately, while I enjoyed The Hearts We Mend, it also challenged me to get out of my Evie-like comfort zone and look for opportunities God has given me to impact the world outside the church doors … and it did it without coming across as preachy. The Bannister Falls series is a must read for anyone looking for faith-filled, realistic romance.

  • REVIEW + GIVEAWAY: ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’

Everything that Christian fiction should be . . . captivating storyline, seamless writing, richly-drawn characters with messy lives, and spiritual application that the reader can take to heart. Kathryn Springer is an exceptional writer and both books in this series are on my list of favorites. When a beautiful story leaves you with much to reflect upon – well, that’s one of the best things about it. The way Jack served his family and quirky fellow tenants at his ramshackle apartment building makes me think that I am way too content in my comfort zone. Most touching to me is the fact that we are all different, and reflect our faith in different ways. Highly recommended.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’

Sometimes you find love when and where you least expect it. In The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer we meet several characters, including Evie and Jack. This modern day love story unfolds as Evie prepares for her son’s wedding and the next phase of her own life. With the janitor at the church takes an unexpected leave, Evie’s and Jack’s lives start to cross paths more frequently. She has a strong first impression of Jack, but the more she gets to know him, the more she realizes that there is a lot more to Jack than is visible on the surface.

The story was well written, it felt like I was right there with the characters. Although this was the second story in the Bannister Falls series, I felt that nothing was lost in jumping in with book two.

The characters were revealed with time, through backstories and current events. I’m sure that if I had read The Dandelion Field, the first book in the series, I would have likely known more about the characters going in, but certainly got to know them well through this story. In fact, the more I got to know the characters the more I loved them and the more I cheered them on for things to go ‘right’ for them. The characters and story are heart-warming – a feel good story that makes you appreciate the diversity of those around you.

I really enjoyed the nuances of this book. The sprinkles of faith, the courage and purpose, the importance of family, and the unique characters drew me in and kept me for the entire story. This wasn’t just a book about two people falling in love, it was a story about community and family. It has been a while since I read book 1 so it was nice to jump back into the town with characters I was familiar with and see where they were now. But I think this book would also work well as a stand alone novel. Overall, this was a well written story that will appeal to a large audience. I will definitely be adding it to my library.

  • BOOK REVIEW ~ ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

This book had such a sweet story! Sigh…..

This is the second book of the “Banister Falls” series by Kathryn Springer. I will admit it took me a chapter or two to figure who everyone was but that didn’t hinder me from completely enjoying this book.

Evie was a great leading lady. I love that she is my age and is in a different season of her life than the typical 18 year old heroine.

Jack is a total mystery at first. I really enjoyed getting to know him piece by piece. There were so many aspects to his character that had to be “seen” as the story went along.

The secondary characters were equally as enjoyable as the two main characters. I would love to read more about them.

I can already say that I’ll definitely be reading more of this series.

THE HEARTS WE MEND was like coming back home to characters I already love or am familiar with, a small town with all the usual charm and a close-knit church community, and a few new characters to throw some twists in. It was great to see how Evie has slowly thawed since first being introduced to her in the first book and to see how much Jack pushes her to see her town and herself in a different light. Jack was a great character! A perfect balance for Evie. There were so many sweet moments between the two, the townspeople, and some little kiddos that I loved. Another fabulous release from Springer!

I loved Evie’s strong character in this book! Instead of dwelling on her sadness or feeling sorry for herself, she choose to stay busy and help those around her. She meets Jack at church and is immediately drawn to him but he isn’t anything like her late husband or other men. Jack has alot of family drama and issues which keeps him wanting to get close to Evie but hes drawn to her loving and vibrant nature.

I liked how Jack and Evie work together to help other people and bring closeness to the community thru service. This was a very enjoyable christian romance with no language or inappropriate behavior.

There were so many things I loved about this story. I thought that the way Evie and Jack met was great. It was just a fun set up for the story and highlighted their differences.

Evie was such a likable and wonderful character. She went through a great transformation in this story! What a work God did in her. And much of the way that God helped Evie, was through Jack’s influence in her life. Jack was simply fabulous. His willingness to help others and the way he cared for people demonstrated the amazing impact God had made on his life. I loved the attraction between these two and the hopeful feeling of this story.

I missed the first book in this series so I was worried I wouldn’t know what was going on, but I really shouldn’t have worried, the story stood alone completely. I LOVED this story. I laughed and cried, and cried and laughed. Evie was the model of a Christian women’s ministry leader. Put together, lovely and soft-spoken, she exudes confidence. I want to be Evie when I grow up :-). My heart hurt for Jack as he tried so hard to keep his brother’s little family from falling apart. Such a beautiful story of sacrificial giving of yourself. 5 stars from this reviewer.

  • STRETCH OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE

The story picks up where we left off, with Dan and Gin enjoying the start of a beautiful relationship. The wedding for Cody and Raine is just around the corner, and Cody’s mom Evie feels a bit like a third wheel no matter which way she turned. She wasn’t my favorite character from The Dandelion Field, so I was pleased to see her character grow up a little bit in this book. Through the new people she meets, Evie really stretches out of her comfort zone and learns to live a different life. As she gained new skills, her confidence grew. Isn’t that how it is with most of us? Author Kathryn Springer did a great job of developing the characters for The Hearts We Mend.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

Springer’s smooth, dramatic writing brings the characters to life. She makes the entire plot feel very realistic, which is what made me feel so burdened for Evie at the beginning of the book. I like the way that Springer kept walking through Evie’s valley with her and brought characters forward who could help her with the life changes she was experiencing. Those people serve as good reminders and examples for the kind of people that we all should be.

Many authors create stories around just a few characters, but Springer’s brought an entire community to life. She’s a master with words. I can’t wait to read more of her work.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

A cast of delightful, believable, and vibrant characters hammer their way through this story of lives in distress, lives healing, lives discovering. Main protagonists, Evie and Jack, virtually run headlong into each other on a dark night as she adventures forth to help another and he, stealthily with baseball bat in hand, protects his neighbor from intruders.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

I loved this book! While the first book in the series was incredible, I think that I liked this one even better, since I saw a little bit of myself in Evie. It’s easy to get caught up in living a safe life and forget about the interesting people around us that come from different backgrounds. This book is definitely a new favorite! I love Kathryn’s style of writing, and she does a fabulous job of making her characters come alive. I also love that she has a lot going on with the secondary characters, making their stories come alive. I look forward to the next book in the series!

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ + GIVEAWAY

What is it about a bad boy? Like cowboys, there’s just something about a bad boy that just holds onto one’s heart? Well, if that bad boy has a heart of gold and a servant attitude like Jack in The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer, I’d say take that chance, and go for it. And speaking of chance, that’s what this is about. It’s about taking the chance that God gave you, and trusting Him with all. A beautiful story of family, love and trusting God to find growth. One not to miss!

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

This is the second book by author, Kathryn Springer, following Evie and her son Cody. This second book is just as fantastic (if not more!) as the first novel. It is empowering, confident building and teaches us that we must look beyond the cover of a person to see the true beauty on the inside. A fantastic novel from start to finish, that left me wanting more!

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’

The Hearts We Mend is the second book in Ms. Springer’s Banister Falls series and I hope it won’t be the last. I loved the first one, The Dandelion Field, and I anxiously waited for this one – and oh, it did not disappoint. I devoured every word of this book. Jack totally rocks (to use my teenage daughter’s words) and Evie has grown so much since The Dandelion Field. She continuously surprised me. I totally loved this book, the characters, and it was so good to catch up with Max and Gin, Cody and Raine. Did I mention that I loved this? My copy is going on my keeper shelf.

    A fabulous series.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

Most romance novels feature young ladies and gentlemen experiencing love for the first time, or even finding new love after a disastrous relationship. With Kathryn Springer’s latest novel, The Hearts We Mend, the featured couple are both … mature … and not especially looking for the love that finds them!

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in Springer’s “Bannister Falls” series, although it would have been helpful to have read the first book, The Dandelion Field, there is enough of a backstory to catch the first time reader up.

I applaud Ms. Springer and her choice of fascinating characters and for the lovely story of love and faith that intertwined throughout the story. I highly recommend this book!

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER

This is a delightful novel with well developed characters, even the quirky ones. I love the theme of God healing and transforming hearts. Springer has given us a good look at the struggles of Evie, a widow, and the possibility of new romance. I loved Jack and his loyalty to his brother and his love for his neighbors. He’s an inspiration. This is an entertaining and inspiring novel.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’ BY KATHRYN SPRINGER: A REVIEW

Get out of your comfort zone.

Evie and Jack are from two different worlds. She keeps everything organized and precise, and he lives in the moment. She lives in a nice house, while he lives on the other side of the tracks. But there is a subtle draw between them that creates the same draw in the reader — to turn the next page, to read just one more chapter!

The Hearts We Mend by Kathryn Springer was an excellent book. I have to admit that I didn’t realize that this was part of a series until I was a few chapters in and the for some reason it clicked in my head.

  • NO MATTER HOW MUCH EVIE LIKES TO PLAN HER LIFE, GOD’S GOT A SURPRISE IN STORE!

I love the chemistry that Jack and Evie both share, and their connection to their families. I believe it is what initially draws them together, how much they genuinely care for others putting their needs second. It disarms them to really seem the person inside instead of facing the exterior only and allows a rare peek into the heart of the person inside. I love Jack’s willingness to step in no matter how appearances present themselves, like Evie’s confrontation with Max’s parents who hold her responsible for his death because she didn’t try harder to sway him to stay in the family business instead. I was rooting for him after that episode! This is well worth a look into for fans of contemporary romance and well worth 5 out of 5 stars in this book lover’s heart!

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’

When I read The Dandelion Field (first book in Banister Falls series), I found characters I really liked. With this book, I fell completely in love with those characters.

This book picks up soon after the first finishes. Evie is working on the final details of Cody’s wedding, and preparing herself for an empty home. She has her job she loves at the church and the community of Banister Falls still doing their part to care for the widow. She still loves Max and still clings to his memory and her life as a widow. Until she meets Jack.

  • ‘THE HEARTS WE MEND’

A fast , fun read. I loved every page of this book . I felt as if I had just sat down to read it when all the sudden I was reading the last page.

A super fun read, the characters are so easy to love and you just can’t help but love Lily.

I do need to say it was like watching a movie while I was reading this book I could see every page like I was there. It was not long enough for me I hated to see it come to an end.

You’ve just got to read this and find out what happens to Evie and Jack. Oh and I must not forget about Lily.

I gave this book 5 stars two times. I HIGHLY recommend this book.
