Hiding from the Kids in My Prayer Closet (David C Cook, July 2017)

Finding grace and laughter when motherhood gets real

Soon after Jessica Kastner became a mother, she wondered if she was the only mom who found pretend play more boring than watching playdough harden and who dreaded yet another friend’s Instagram post of homemade deliciousness.

In Hiding from My Kids in the Prayer Closet, Kastner shares her experience as an “unmom”—a mom who loves her kids more than she loves the daily experience of mothering. She helps readers laugh at the ridiculous, delight in the unpredictable, and enjoy being the mothers God made them to be.

I started reading this book and my first reaction was “My personality is the opposite of Jessica Kastner!” I mean, she never wanted kids, but ended up with 3. I was so excited to have kids! I wasn’t certain if I should even go past the first page after seeing the huge difference, but I am so glad I did! I laughed a lot in this book. There were some heavy parts in this book because if we’re honest, parenting isn’t always easy.

For any Mom who feels overwhelmed by all of the responsibilities that come with being Mom this book is encouraging and laugh out loud funny at times. I love how candid and open the author is, it makes me feel like I am not alone in my crazy moments. Being a Mom is definitely the hardest job one can ever have and yet this book helps makes you feel like you are not alone and that one can find grace and laughter in the disasters that can happen.

I loved the honesty of the stories from her early days as a young single mom through her later working mom tales. All moms can appreciate the trails and tribulations of a rambunctious house of toddlers.

I was nodding my head in agreement within the first three chapters, I was smiling and sayin’ ” I have been there” within the middle of the book. It was like my mind had written the stories that make me a different mom, out in this book. It is relatable, I mean there really isn’t a mom out there that wouldn’t find at least one moment or piece of this book that would make them laugh or agree.

Kastner shares a lot of wisdom gained from experience and walking with God, while allaying your fears and helping you laugh at yourself. This is a great book to share with young moms, especially new or expecting moms … and it would make a wonderful baby shower gift.

Hiding from the Kids in My Prayer Closet takes readers through quick essays on the joys (and not so joys) of motherhood.d Jessica Kastner puts her own humorous touch that will have readers laughing so hard they will get an ab work out (good book and an ab workout equals double win). The chapters are short making the perfect for stealing a moment for a quick “me-time” read (and pick me up).

I would recommend this book to those women who just don’t feel cut out to be a mom, those women who enjoyed the single side of life, and now feel overwhelmed with their new mommy status and the sacrifices they have to make for their little ones.

This book is a must read for the ‘unmom’, but truly is a great read for all moms. Motherhood is crazy and messy and exhausting… but it’s fun and there’s a lot of laughter to be found, and that is JUST what this book provides!

If reading a book with a chapter titled : ‘Children’s Parties; Where Saturdays go to Die’ causes you to say, “Amen, Sister!” you will truly enjoy this breath of fresh air written by Jessica Kastner. I’ve read many books on parenting and motherhood, and it’s wonderful to read a Christian book that addresses day to day life with such transparency. Kastner blends humor, sarcasm, truth and tenderness in ways that can encourage moms and also spur them along to accept their individual gifts and personal parenting styles.

Wow! I’m not the helicopter, lovey-dovey, play-in-the-floor mom that many of my peers are, but at least I can find something great to say about being a mom each and every day.

I don’t know how else to put it – I kind of have a girl crush on Jessica Kastner. Her wit and humor and outlook on life is just the kind of traits that draw me to a gal pal. Author, Jessica Kastner, has written a book that lightens up motherhood and parenting. Through her, I learned that not everyone overly decorates for Christmas, creates Pinterest-worthy dinners, or always schedules activities from sunup to sundown.

Jessica Kastner’s transparent honesty will hit a chord with moms everywhere, and you will laugh with both entertainment and relief as you think, “You mean I am not the only one who feels that way?”

This book is funny. I don’t LOL much when I read. But with this book, I guffawed out-loud numerous times. Jessica Kastner is downright hilarious.

  • ‘HIDING FROM THE KIDS IN MY PRAYER CLOSET’ BY JESSICA KASTNER

Jessica Kastner writes with frank humor often missing from Christian works.

Although, she maintains a Christian perspective and 100% believes grace is why she is still standing, she doesn’t gloss over the frank humility and humor present in everyday parenthood.

Some may find her blunt and matter of fact descriptions of the daily Mommy struggle to be a turn off, but I found it refreshing and delightfully laugh out loud funny.

Instantly I GRAVATED towards this book! Jessica hadn’t always dreamed of babies and infants, which is something I can totally relate too! I am glad not to be the only one in the crowd. This book will make you laugh, you’ll relate to the stories and all around you’ll enjoy this book!

Oh my goodness, I loved this book!  It was hilarious and just so real!  I found myself laughing out loud at different times throughout the book and at other times relieved that I am not the only one who has had moments of feeling that way.  Jessica shares her stories of shopping with kids glued to your sides and trying to keep them reeled in while trying on bathing suits, shoes, cloths.  How about playdates that feel never ending, play-doh being stuck to everything, the struggle of packing lunches day after day, and the school projects and assignments that feel like the mother is back in school as well considering it takes so much time and involvement.

This is one of the most humorous and real books on motherhood I have ever read! Throughout the whole book, I laughed aloud. Yet I also was impressed that each chapter finishes with deeper thoughts and applications.

Jessica Kastner begins the book by assuring readers that she is an “Un-Mom” so if any readers also feel like that, they are not alone! She begins the book by describing how she felt like an outsider when around many other moms, because of her personality. Each chapter is a hilarious outtake on our lives as moms.

This book made me realize that I’m not alone in my journey. I laughed, I cried, and I felt at peace while reading. It brings to light the topics that we rarely admit to ourselves, much less anyone else. It’s a great read that I recommend to all moms!

While I definitely would never classify myself as an un-mom per Jessica’s definition (I always dreamed of being a wife, homemaker, and mom; I love to cook and bake; I like my house to be clean and neat at all times; I love babies; I love working in the church nursery; etc.), I could still relate to so much of Jessica’s book. It was laugh-out-loud hilarious and she held nothing back.
