{More about The Inheritance}

The Inheritance (Bethany House, April 2016)

The death of the clan patriarch has thrown the tiny Shetland Islands community of Whale’s Reef into turmoil.

Everyone assumed MacGregor Tulloch’s heir to be his grand-nephew David, a local favorite, but when it is discovered that MacGregor left no will, David’s grasping cousin Hardy submits his own claim to the inheritance, an estate that controls most of the island’s land. And while Hardy doesn’t enjoy much popular support, he has the backing of a shadowy group of North Sea oil investors. The courts have frozen the estate’s assets while the competing claims are investigated, leaving many of the residents in financial limbo. The future of the island—and its traditional way of life—hangs in the balance.

Loni Ford is enjoying her rising career in a large investment firm in Washington, DC. Yet in spite of her outward success, she is privately plagued by questions of identity. Orphaned as a young child, she was raised by her paternal grandparents, and while she loves them dearly, she feels completely detached from her roots. That is until a mysterious letter arrives from a Scottish solicitor. . . .

Past and present collide in master storyteller Phillips’s dramatic new saga of loss and discovery, of grasping and grace, and of the dreams of men and women everywhere.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ {LITFUSE REVIEW}

At the beginning of this book I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or not. It didn’t read quickly. It seemed to drag a bit. And then, boom!! I hit a point where I didn’t want to put it down! It suddenly had captivated my attention and I wanted to know more and see where everything led. But not tomorrow or the next day, right now!

This is not a book to simply pass the time, this historical fiction will grab you and keep you engrossed from the beginning to the end. There is some Scottish Brogue which I happen to find fascinating but could be a little difficult for some readers to understand. Considering that Scotland is the setting, the story would not be the same if it wasn’t included. I find this to be another captivating tale told by Michael.

  • PHILLIPS BACK WITH SCOTTISH GENERATIONAL SAGA

In The Inheritance, Phillips demonstrates why he’s a master storyteller of sweeping, generational sagas. The book starts with short chapters that introduce to a host of characters from current and past times. All end up tied together because of one place, a tiny island in Scotland, an island where time has largely stood still, but now the current pressures of the world are pressing against it. The Inheritance also delves into deeper themes of what does it mean to inherit. Why should we care about preserving the past? How do we honor that while moving forward? There are even a few hints of ties to the older series that brought a smile to my face.

This book is perfect for readers who like to submerge in a book rich with characters and setting, one that will allow them to be swept into anoth

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

I was so impressed with the amount of research Phillips had put into the book. I could tell that he had spent a lot of time researching the period, the language, the culture, and the time period. I knew absolutely nothing of the Shetland Islands, but I learned so much that I found I was hoping in the internet to get a visual of the place he was describing. Any fiction book that makes me do research, as well, is definitely a winner. That doesn’t happen very regularly. It was a book that I didn’t want to just check off on my list, but I truly wanted to sit and enjoy the entire thing.

I was very eager to read the latest by one of my favorite authors and the fact that it was set in Scotland made it all the better. This book certainly wasn’t a quick or easy read and at times it was quite dry, but the characters were well developed and engaging enough to keep you plodding through. I enjoyed the premise and the fact that it was set in culture rich Scotland. Another great read from an excellent author that I have not had the pleasure of reading in awhile. I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Since it was a complex tale instead of a quick read, this book required me to sit down and slow down my busy life to read it.

I look forward to the continuing story and the eventual resolution and conclusion of this epic tale.

It’s a journey, a mystery, a cultural experience and a history all wrapped together.

I loved the short chapters. They made the book excellent for snatching a moment here and there to read.

The book seems to be crafted. It’s well planned and executed. I was impressed with that.

Within the first chapter of the book, I was overwhelmed by the amount of details and I was, frankly, bored. I wanted to give it my best shot, though, so I could honestly review it, so I continued reading. I read through a good portion of the first part of the book – twenty chapters or so – before I just closed the book. It is extremely rare that I do that, but I could not focus on this book and I could not relate to it.

  • REVIEW + GIVEAWAY: ‘THE INHERITANCE’

The Inheritance is a fictional jewel, an epic masterpiece crafted by a masterful storyteller. It’s quite a unique story, with a style, quality and depth rarely found in Christian fiction. From the very first paragraph, I knew that the book I held in my hands would prove to be exceptional – and it was, greatly touching the soul of this reader…A lot of series foundation is laid in this first story, both historically and in dual storylines involving David and the American, Loni. Suspense also builds as the story progresses – over elements such as greed, desire for power, sustaining a beloved way of life, and a seeking of the past. The story ends with a promise of much more to come. Highly recommended.

The author goes into full detail as he tells of each time period and character, past (1924) and present, with dramatized narration. I like the full description the author gives of each scene. There are eight parts and each part has several chapters. I recommend this novel to all history buffs interested in Scotland. Author Michael Phillips and his wife visit Scotland yearly, which helps give insight to this novel.

This is the first book my Michael Phillips that I have read, and it took me a little time to get use to his writing style, and I will say, I will be looking for more Michael Phillips books in the future! The Scottish language threw me off for a bit, but after I started understanding it better, I actually enjoyed it. It is fun to pretend to be inside a book with the characters, and this was a great book to do that. The characters were wonderfully created and well developed, those some of them really got on my nerves. David and Hardy are completely different. With completely different motives. One we like, and one we dislike. And just about the time I was hoping for some confirmed answers to the story, the book ended!

Phillips takes his time introducing the main characters over the beginning of the book. Each short chapter is quick to read but packed with background and history for each character. We also learn a lot of about the land – The Shetlands – which is the main setting of the story. It’s way of live weaves through the characters. I have to admit this book is a bit slow to start. I truly believe that is part of it’s beauty.

  • I AM SUCH A FAN OF MICHAEL PHILLIPS!

Michael Phillips may be one of my favorite Christian fiction authors of all time. I remember reading his books (many times co-written with Judith Pella) as far back as I can remember and I remember picking out his books specifically from the library because I loved them all!

The book started out a little slow but soon picked up and was so interesting! I loved learning about Scotland and it really makes me want to go visit soon. The clash of the two stories made for a really great book and I can’t wait for more in this series!

  • INTERESTING, BUT WORDY

This was definitely an interesting book. I didn’t particularly care for the execution of all of the interesting details, though. Half of the time the story felt like it moved backwards with so much reminiscing and historical retelling. There seemed to be a lot of mentions of religion but not really a lot of substance. It was more vaguely passed over as spiritualistic. It didn’t come out as a strong Christian book…but almost a confusing one, that left me wondering just where these characters stood and what they believed.

The Inheritance is the kind of book I enjoy sitting on the porch to read on a beautiful spring day or snuggle into the couch with when the wind blows and the rains pour. I savored every word as the writer led me from Whales Reef on one of the incredible Shetland Islands to the lovely Pennsylvania countryside where Loni grew up. The vividness of the Scottish isles drew me in and made me want to travel there. Michael Philipps brought first-hand experience to the story through he and his wife’s ventures into Scottish territory.

Michael Phillips writes with authority about the history of The Shetlands, the culture and the hierarchy, the language and dialect of the areas, and oil companies. • BOOK REVIEW: ‘THE INHERITANCE’

The Inheritance has a complex structure — multiple settings, multiple time periods and multiple characters’ perspectives. And while a little daunting to a reader expecting to breeze through the novel, it provided this reader a rich reading experience. Phillips is a master at conveying the people and place of The Shetlands. I could almost feel the mist on my face and the smell of the sea in the air. His writing is a bit dense, but I found myself lost in David’s rambles across the island of Whales Reef.

I have ancestors from Scotland, so any book set there automatically gets my attention. After reading The Inheritance, I can easily see why Michael Phillips is so popular as he uses detailed descriptions throughout his writings. • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

I love reading fiction set in my birth country, so I jumped at the opportunity to read and review this novel. Since Phillips’ brief biography said he and his wife spend time in Scotland every year, I was hoping for good things.

Sadly, the first chapter almost put me off reading the rest of the book. It’s set in 1924 and is about the young son of a gamekeeper and a dying bird. In the next couple of short chapters we are introduced to the laird and his pondering over the directions of his sons’ lives.

These opening chapters, however, are representative of the book as a whole. There’s a lot of introspection (navel gazing) and flashbacks to past events. The plot is slow to move, and I felt that a scene involving the rescue of a fishing boat lacked drama and tension.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

It’s superbly written. It’s a smart book – one with expertly crafted sentences, a well-planned plot, one that required much research and footnotes and multiple plot points that get woven together as the characters develop.

It’s not an action-packed story but a dramatic one, one that happens over decades of time and with rising emotions. The characters are well developed and draw you in with each turn of the page.

  • ON THE FENCE ABOUT THIS ONE . . .

If I’m completely honest, the read was a little disappointing. I understand this is the first book in a new saga, Secrets of the Shetlands by Phillips, so there were a lot of characters to introduce, but they all became a bit confusing to keep up with. The story also drug by very slowly in places that made it a little difficult to continue reading. The Celtic dialect made for a clumsy read in places as well. With this said, I am not willing to give up completely on Phillips and will be looking for the next book to continue the story.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

The book was a little difficult getting into at first. It moved slowly and bounced around between several people a lot, but once the author got past the beginning of the book; it took off and got my attention.Though fiction, this novel offers a fascinating look at Scotland and the whole lord and chief process and what those entail. The book is full of colorful descriptions of the land of Scotland, the people, and their traditions and talk. At times I wasn’t sure what the dialogue was saying for sure when he used the Scottish brogue, but it was still a fascinating and exciting read.

  • NOT MY FAVORITE

The Inheritance by Michael Phillips was a super long book. I liked the book for the most part, but it is super long, and the font isn’t the biggest so at times it was hard to me to read. With all that said I loved the story and how it was written. I did feel at times that there were almost too many details, and I found that I got bogged down in all the details.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

Over all, I liked the rich details and scenery in this story. I loved the feeling of visiting Scotland and getting to know more of the history and how the times have affected the Shetlands. While I enjoyed the characters, the story does seem to drag a bit at times, so I had a hard time getting into the story. I still found it a lovely read, just one you have to be prepared to savor and take at a slower pace.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’

The author spent a great deal of time setting the scene with detailed background information on several characters and vivid descriptions of Whale’s Reef, the primary setting of the book. Pertinent historical facts were interspersed throughout that emphasized the importance of a proper heir. I will admit that I struggled somewhat staying engaged with this lengthy tome because there was little action and very little dialogue. I did persist to the end and just as I thought something might be about to happen, I was left hanging. Of course, by that time I was hooked and will definitely have to read the next installment of the series in order to find out what happens.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS + GIVEAWAY

The theme of belonging and strength of character will satisfy those seeking for something more, and even though, it’s an anti-climatic cliffhanger, the end of this novel gives the impression of hope. Give this a try and enjoy its abundance of history and human emotions.

It’s been many years since I’ve read a book by Michael Phillips but the storyline of his newest book, The Inheritance, drew me in. I’m so glad for this opportunity to reconnect with this author for he is a gifted storyteller.

Mr. Phillips has given us quite a story and it is filled with the wonder of the Islands that I have not been to in a different set of times. I liked this book and am really looking forward to the next book in this series.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’

Book one of the Secrets of the Shetlands deals with the turmoil that Whales Reef finds itself in. After the death of their laird, David (the chief) finds that the money has gone dry. Will the tiny island be able to support itself? How will the wool factory workers get paid? David discovers that there will be no income until the estate is resolved and it seems like that may be a while since they aren’t sure who the true heir should be. Is it David, the chief, or Hardy, his mean foolish cousin? Life on the Scottish island tries to go on as normal, but everyone is worried. What will happen to their traditions and their heritage?

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ (SECRETS OF THE SHETLANDS SERIES) BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS FROM BETHANY HOUSE PUBLISHER [REVIEW & GIVEAWAY]

One might think that with a book ending at 428 pages, “The End” would be welcomed. However, at that point the door was opened to an intriguing and beguiling continuance. Not a true cliffhanger, just a welcoming of possibilities. Michael Phillips has created a cast of characters that the reader both loves and detests.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’

I was intrigued by the premise of this book and enjoyed aspects of it but, overall, it was a disappointment. The story dragged with too many insignificant details provided. In what I assume is an attempt to show David’s involvement in the lives of the tenants of Whale’s Reef, pages are committed to detailing meaningless errands and encounters as he walks from place to place in the village. The slow pace continued throughout much of the book….

  • CLASSIC STYLE

The story moved quite slowly at first, but it picked up near the middle. I kept thinking that there must be some symbolism that I was missing. The Inheritance has a very classic feel. Fans of literary prose will be intrigued by the details that were painstakingly recorded. Though I found them tedious, the tidbits added much depth to an otherwise mundane tale. While I might continue to read the series, it wasn’t my favorite novel or story.

  • A GREAT START TO A NEW SERIES

I thought this author did a great job with the historical part of this book. He did his research to make this book really show the time period he was talking about. He also did a good job of capturing the language/dialect so you could almost here the characters talking to you. I fell in love with the story as a whole from the first page.

I loved the history, the characters and the way the story evolved. The ending left a little bit wanting and unsure if this is how the story ended, but it was still a great story from start to finish that anyone can get into. The Scottish language may take a while to get used to though! But I love reading it and imagining the accents as I read it.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ REVIEW

….I REALLY wanted to love this book, but sadly the style just isn’t for me…..The book description originally intrigued me with mixing of the past and present. But with the way scenes and characters are set up I personally found it difficult to follow along. I was also a little disappointed with the way it ends…

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’ BY MICHAEL PHILLIPS

The Inheritance starts out s-l-o-w. And a bit confusing. There are so many characters that have to be introduced that each one gets their own chapter in the beginning. As a result, the first 15 chapters of the book seem really disjointed and hard to follow. About half way through the book, I finally felt like the story was coming together to the point that I was truly interested to find out the ending.

  • ‘THE INHERITANCE’

The story has wonderful historical and geographical insight and that is what kept me reading. The story, however, seemed to go on forever and I was not satisfied at the end of the book. I suppose, that is purposefully written that way to entice me to read the subsequent novels in this series. However, I was very disappointed in the story line. Mr. Phillips’ writing is quite good and I was able to absorb myself into the life of the Shetland Islands.
