Jilted is the third book of the Mended Heart series, and I was blessed to receive all three books of this trilogy. While I only had time to read just Jilted, my mom did get to read all three. She did strongly recommend I read all three in order, as they would probably “make more sense.” However, I found that I was able to follow the story line fairly well anyway.

The chapters switch back and forth between points of view: first person (Lynda’s) and third person, which has the potential to make it challenging to follow. I found I could relate well with Lynda, especially, and Clyde as well, since I have gone through (and continue to go through) some pretty “messy stuff” in my own life.

I have been a big fan of Varina’s since I fell in love with her writing from day one, and haven’t been able to get enough of it since. That’s why I’m so disappointed that she’s only written this series! So far anyway. I’m hopeful she’ll write many, many more books in the years to come. Anyway, I cannot describe to you how much I loved both of the first two novels in this series, and I have to confess, I think I loved this one even more. Varina has an amazing talent; she manages to write sweet, poignant stories that grip your heart and have so many little touching moments and connections while still creating captivating, and even hysterical, scenes weaved into the middle. Because of that, I don’t think it would be a stretch to say she is one of my top three favorite authors.

Varina Denman’s Jilted is an excellent read. With her down-to-earth characters and a vividly depicted small-town setting, Denman shares a compelling narrative that engaged me wholeheartedly, and I can’t help but recommend Jilted – be sure to add it to your to-read list!

When the same people have lived in the same town their entire lives, it means their lives are continually an intertwining mix of past and present. Lynda sits center stage of this mix as she still awaits a husband who left and never returned, an ex-boyfreind from her teen years, and a potential ‘new love’ who used to be a very close friend. These relationships have ripple affects that bring more characters into the picture, from Lynda’s daughter Ruthie, to Ruthie’s friend Fawn & her family, and even to the sheriff who Lynda has known since kindergarten. Above all the fantastic weavings of present & past within the characters, Denman takes a great look at: depression, first love, love later in life, losing people you love, and how God has a love for all of us that He longs for us to accept.

The author has a way of drawing the reader in and grips at the heart strings from the page one. This book is a story of a woman who has dealt with heartbreak and depression and who is on a journey and hopes to find joy again. I laughed, cried, and prayed with this character and did not want the story to end. It truly is a story that shows that God truly does work out all things for His good. If you need a new series to read this summer I highly recommend this one. You want be sorry.

Can I just say how wonderful this Mended Heart series is? I’m truly impressed because it had me hooked the whole series. I can’t say I’m one to grab a contemporary set novel in a small town, but I enjoyed each story so much and was sad when I finished the last page because no more Trapp, Texas! Plus, I really loved that Varina tackled issues and hard topics in each story. I love true to life stories like this…

Jilted is different from any other book I’ve read. The way Clyde treats Lynda when she is having an (depression) episode is tender and encouraging. He talks to her, listens to her and does what he can to diffuse the triggers.

I really struggled with the attitude of the townsfolk and church members.

This is the third book in this series but is great on its own.

In Jilted, you’ll learn the story of Lynda Turner and what has happened over the years in Trapp, Texas. The characters are genuine and the story is beautiful. This book and the rest of the series is a wonderful addition to your summer reading collection.

If you are looking for a book to read that is full of heart and a story that will completely draw you in and hold you captive, then Jilted is for you! However, I would highly recommend you read the first two books in the series first just because they are THAT good and the characters will become even more so real to you. Varina is a talented writer as she has the ability to create characters and storylines that are so easy to relate to and her descriptions are so detailed and written in a way that I became a part of the story.

As with the other books in the Mended Hearts Series, this book deals with hard stuff, forgiveness, and the reality of depression. I have been in church services where pastor’s have said from the pulpit that depression isn’t real it’s that we aren’t in true relationship with God. Varina does a great job showing the difficulty of depression and the struggle within. I could really relate to Lynda and understand her struggle.

Jilted is the story of Lynda Turner who has struggled with depression since her husband lefter her and their daughter over fifteen years ago. But hope comes in an unexpected way as a local ex-convict. Jilted is a story of forgiveness and leaving the past where it belongs…in the past and learning to finally move forward with life. The third novel in the Mended Heart series, Jilted by Varina Denman is a thinking woman’s Christian romance novel. This is an honest look at the life, struggles and personality of a woman who was abandoned many years ago. Denman beautifully crafts her characters including the town of Trapp, Texas with depth and great care. She deals with issue like depression with great sensitivity and knowledge gained from either painstaking research or experience. This novel was so real, it took concerted effort to remember that it is a work of fiction. And I love the thick thread of spirituality that is woven through the novel.

There is so much that happens in this book. All of it making for a riveting read that I was unable to put down. There is so much family drama, serious sickness, and a town and church that are just beginning to learn truths that were long buried. Varina Denman did an excellent job at showing Lynda’ depression: the triggers that put her in such slumps and the destructive nature that the depression had on Lynda. The romance was something else too; a slow burn that could not be ignored even as their lives and what they thought they knew was crashing down around them.

The hardest thing for anyone who has faced a bad past is the ability to find a way to move forward, and be able to leave it behind. For both Lynda and Clyde, they have to come to terms with doing so in different ways. Lynda has to deal with the issues of abandonment from those in her life, willingly or unwillingly. Clyde has to deal with always feeling like an outsider and that nothing he does will ever be good enough, especially within the church he attends. It seems hard for people to apply the Bible to their own lives and instead find ways to sit back and judge the actions of those around them, instead of seeing them like God does with love and unconditional grace and mercy.

While Jilted clearly flows out of the first two books, and the experience of reading it is made richer by knowing the background information, Denman wrote the novel in such a way that new readers will have no trouble understanding and appreciating the story. (I would highly recommend reading the first two books prior to Jilted, though, as they’re excellent!)

While I didn’t find Jilted to be quite as engaging as the previous two in the series, it did touch my emotions in a way that surprised me, and it was a very satisfying story. This book (as well as the whole series) made me consider my own prejudices and spiritual blind spots while enjoying a well-crafted, realistic story.

Jilted by Varina Denman is the third book and conclusion of the Mended Hearts series. Lynda Turner’s life has not been an easy one. She is in a dead-end job, lives in a town where everyone knows everyone else’s business, and cannot seem to overcome her depression. Enter an ex-con who wants nothing more than to live a good life and forget the past. The past has been unkind to both Lynda and Clyde, which makes them leery of their future, especially together. Lynda is afraid to trust and Clyde is afraid to pursue Lynda. All comes to a head when a past deed afflicts them and their friends with the truth and its consequence.

Jilted is so much more than the romance between Lynda and Clyde. It’s answers to the questions raised in Jaded. It’s healing for a broken family. It’s a non-critical look at mental illness. I will say I struggled to get into this story. But because a friend had spoken so highly of this author’s books, I pressed on, and I was happy I did. The suspense part of the story drew me. If you’re a suspense fan, you will know Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, always alluded to the fact that small villages (towns) have secrets. And oh boy did Trapp Texas have its fair share of secrets. From ex-convicts to gossiping blue hairs, you will see small town living at it’s finest. (tic) But you will also see what is good about small town living too.

Jilted is one of those books that grabs you and won’t let go. There was a lot going on as this series worked its way toward a conclusion with unanswered questions solved and characters who were finally able to put the past behind them and move on with their lives. A mysterious discovery at the lake had more significance than anyone could have imagined and would impact Lynda’s life considerably. Then there is the character who is a fine example of the effect buried guilt can have on a person.

Just like the previous books, the author weaves a tale that feels so real and engaging. The characters could be someone you know or live next door to. The author handled the subject of depression well and I felt gave the readers a bit of insight into what it’s like to live with depression. • ‘JILTED’

Depression is a very serious issue, so glad it being brought to life in the pages of this book. I can’t say enough about the main character Lynda. As I was reading the book I had to remind myself that she was a fiction character. My heart was going out to her. The fact that a character seems so real to just add to the positive experience as you take in the book. It will have laughing and crying with Lynda as her story unfolds. The stories from the first two books intertwine with this book, However, this book would work as a stand alone. This is a wonderful book about hope.

The third book in the Mended Heart series, Jilted tells of a man and woman who have feelings for each other, but first must let go of their past. The main reason this book is so successful is because of the chemistry between the two leads. They were both fantastic. The author committed to making the relationship between the two characters very believable. Lynda, the main female lead, struggles with depression and being a single mother. Clyde, an ex-convict, has his eye on her while the townspeople have their eye on him.
