Life Creative: Inspiration for Today’s Renaissance Mom (Kregel, September 2016)

What was God thinking when He created you creative and then gave you children?

Creative moms often feel as though they must lay their passions down. But God had something special in mind for the creative woman during this intense season of mothering.

In this Pinterest age of handcrafted children’s parties, Instagram photos of beautifully decorated homes, and blogs filled with poetry and prose, it is clear that we are in the midst of a brand new artistic renaissance. Not one born in Italian cathedrals or Harlem jazz clubs, but rather in kitchens, nurseries, and living rooms around the world. Mothers, working in the cracks and crevices of each hectic day, are adorning the world with their gifts, and they’re showing all of us the beauty of this Life Creative.

In this book, you’ll learn:

—Why the world needs your art
—How this Life Creative begins at home
—When art can turn a profit
—Your part in this modern day Renaissance

Life Creative paints the stories of moms, just like you, who are fitting their inspired lives into the everyday, ordinary places of motherhood. Women like home decorator Melissa Michaels and jewelry designer Lisa Leonard, author Angie Smith, recording artist Ellie Holcomb, and many more.

Being a mom doesn’t mean you can’t live a Life Creative

A celebration of motherhood, creativity and the faith that binds them

8/29/2016 || Seattle: Creative moms often feel as though they must lay their passions down once the kids arrive, if for no other reason than there is no time. But God has something special in mind for creative women during this intense season of mothering. In Life Creative: Inspiration for Today’s Renaissance Mom (Kregel Publications/September 27, 2016/ISBN 978-0-8254-4410-4/$14.99) authors Wendy Speake and Kelli Stuart show that “a mother’s natural bent toward imagination doesn’t just wither and die with the
birth of a child. This core component remains part of her intricate design.”

In our social media age of handcrafted children’s parties, artistic Instagram photos, tutorials for renovating old furniture into new treasures and blogs filled with poetry, prose and other expression, clearly a brand-new generation of inspired women is rising up. It is a renaissance born not in Italian cathedrals or Harlem jazz clubs, but in kitchens, nurseries and living rooms around the world. However, when Christian women become mothers, they often feel expected to give up their creative pursuits to parent properly.

Wendy Speake and Kelli Stuart know that struggle. While they acknowledge some seasons of mothering require setting artistic pursuits aside, they also argue these seasons don’t have to last until empty nest time. Instead, mothers with creative gifts are called to use them actively to bless their families, their communities and everyone they encounter. “Life Creative is not a book about raising children,” Speake shares. “This is a book for moms, written by moms and including the stories of other moms . . . on a journey to embrace our God-given design in the midst of motherhood!”

In this book, the creative mom will discover:

  • Why the world needs her art
  • How this Life Creative begins at home
  • When art can turn a profit
  • Her part in this modern day Renaissance

Inspiring and encouraging, Life Creative celebrates the ways mothers can live their art in the midst of mothering. Speake and Stuart share the stories of women such as author and speaker Angie Smith, recording artist Ellie Holcomb and jewelry designer Lisa Leonard, who are balancing their unique talents and giftings with the daily demands of motherhood. By following God’s leading to embrace His gifts, renaissance moms can model the joy of obedience for their families.

Life Creative is part visit with a good friend over coffee, part muse of inspiration for the tired heart and a masterclass for start-up home businesses rolled into one.

Advance Praise

“Kelli and Wendy understand that, yes, being a mom is about raising your children. But it’s also about fully being the woman God created you to be and expressing His love like only you can. Their words will support, encourage and cheer you on in the art and adventure of mothering.”

~ Holley Gerth, Wall Street Journal best-selling author of You’re Already Amazing

“Never has there been a time like this for creative and artistic women to embrace the high calling of mother-hood and the unique giftings God has given to each of us. There is indeed a movement — a Renaissance — of the creative woman, the creative mom. I’m grateful that Wendy and Kelli have chosen to encourage this generation of women, right now, to embrace their God-given creativity and steward it to the glory of God. This book is right on time.”

Suggested interview questions

—What brought the two of you together to write Life Creative?

Life Creative is a book written to encourage moms, but it is not your average parenting book on raising kids. Tell us about your new book and how its message is different.

—Why do you think a woman feels like she must give up some of her own interests when she becomes a parent? As a new mom, did you feel like you needed to rein in your own creativity?

—Often young mothers tend to feel reprimanded for dreaming dreams outside the home. What advice can you give them?

—In the age of Pinterest and Instagram, it seems as though mothers are actually expected to be creative. What advice would you offer for the mom who sees herself more as a “Pinterest fail” rather than being creative?

—You believe all women were made to be creative. Can you explain why?

—How will the mom who doesn’t see herself as creative benefit from Life Creative?

—What encouragement can you offer to the mom in what you describe as “the Dark Ages of motherhood,” or for whom the art and creativity seem to have been lost?

—What does the Great Commission have to do with women’s creative gifts? How can today’s busy moms authentically be involved in the “ends of the earth” part of the Great Commission from their homes?

—You offer wonderful advice in the book for creative moms venturing into the business world both online and in real life. What is the most important thing for these “mompreneurs” to keep in mind?

—It’s a delicate task to balance art, faith and family. How can moms keep a balanced perspective when life seems anything but balanced?

—You both are creative people, as this book clearly shows. How are you both keeping creative?

This book absolutely gripped me from the second chapter. As soon as the authors spoke on the feeling of longing for bedtime instead of longing for ministry and creativity and inspiring the world, I started nodding in agreement. The authors acknowledge that while we love our “captors”, we’re under house arrest. Yes, yes, and yes!

Thankfully this year I don’t feel the confinement as much as last year. By being confined at home, God shows me that I am to be teaching my children (by God’s grace) to become His disciples. I wish this book was written last year. It’s great for the mother who is feeling stifled, especially the mother who has young children at home.

If you’re a creative mom who is looking for ways to embrace your creativity again…or even trying to find ways not to let it go- this is a great book for you! It is a great reminder that we don’t have to let those parts of us go because we now have children, but instead we can use those creative talents that God blessed us with to our advantages. I think sometimes as mom we tend to put our needs and our passions on the back burner- I know I certainly do- but this book reminded me that that’s not always the best option and NOT letting go of our creative pursuits can make us better mothers.

This book by Speake and Stuart is such a wonderful book for anyone who loves to create and for those who aren’t sure if they have a creative bone in them. They show you throughout the Word of God how he encourages us to be creative as He was creative. He made each of us uniquely and we each can have our own form of creativity. The cool thing is we can use that creativity as a form of worship. I love that!!

I was pleasantly surprised at how this book was a refreshing reminder that it’s ok to be creative and explore your creative passions while still embracing and cherishing motherhood. I was reminded that I need to take that time to explore what makes me creative because it makes me a better mother to my children when I feel filled with passion, creativity, and life. Motherhood is demanding, but friends you can pick up the camera or the art brushes and use them in ways that will bless your heart and refresh your soul.

This book is an amazing inspiration to those mothers who are modern and crafty that use Pinterest, and blogs to help inspire their creative side. I loved this book other that the fact that it is naturally assumed that being a mom has stifled your creative side, if anything being a mother and grandmother made my creative side perk up more than ever. Everywhere I looked and everything I saw I would get ideas of how I wanted to use everything or up cycle an item for a different use.

Life Creative is so encouraging, a book that any mom would find inspiring and very beneficial in living day-to-day life. These authors have literally become advocates to moms in this book of hope, encouragement, and application. Chapter 6 talks about abiding, something that I found very difficult with young children. The authors talk about the importance of having three areas of sanctified time in our lives – for God, for family, and for creating – and give helpful ideas for implementation. Life Creative has an abundance of Scripture, application, encouragement and ideas that I would never have thought of on my own.

The thing I love about this book the most is how they show through God’s Word that God encourages us to be creative! Although Life Creative is a book primarily intended to encourage women to flourish in the creativity God has given them, it is also uplifting in other ways. Each woman’s individual worth as one of God’s creations and one of His daughters (for those who have accepted His gift of salvation) is repeatedly affirmed. We are all God’s poeima – His workmanship, His masterpiece, His poem. Each type of creative gift is recognized and valued, and women are encouraged to embrace their creative gifts and worship through them. Worship is explained as being avodah – work, worship, and service – all combined together.

This book has some definite pros and cons for me. The book started out with the assumption that by having children, my creativity was stifled. Since I am more creative now than I was before them, I don’t agree with that premise. The pros were that the authors encouraged creativity and showed that things I wouldn’t have considered as creative, as ways that we can inspire and encourage others. Many women will put their entire pre-child self on hold, focusing all their attention on their home, their husband, and their children. And while there is an appropriate amount of focus-shifting that comes with marriage and children (for both men and women!), it’s important for women not to lose themselves in the transition. If you are a momma who struggles with making time for your creative pursuits or feels bad about letting your kids play by themselves while you bake and decorate fall sugar cookies, this book is for you.

Creativity in motherhood is kinda constroverial in some circles I’m in. Not really like cooking unique meals – but rather if you have a creative gift – if you should use it if that takes away time from focusing on your children. I think this book helps ask tough questions and engages some good thought and answers. We are created in the image of a creative God – that’s why we should instill this in our soul and in the soul of our children.

Creativity can be found in all of us. While my creativity may not mirror my mom’s, I am creative. I enjoy creating with paper and with words.
Creativity can be found within the home. As you and I play out our roles as mom and home keeper, even among the seemingly mundane world of household duties and cooking, we are creating in many ways.
Creativity comes from above. God is a big part of my creativity.

  • ‘LIFE CREATIVE’ BY WENDY SPEAKE AND KELLI STUART BOOK TOUR, BOOK REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Life Creative by authors Wendy Speake & Kelli Stuart is a really thoughtful book. These are stories to read and enjoy about other mothers who are taking care of themselves and their families. These are stories filled with everyday wisdom and ideas. These authors teach you that you are still important while you are busy being a mother. I really liked this book. I give it a 4/5.
