Lost and Found by Kendra Fletcher

Are you too focused on the “right” ways of worship, work, and family life? Learn about the dangers of quiet legalism in Kendra Fletcher’s new book, Lost and Found. Kendra, homeschooling mom of eight, had it all “right,” until it all fell apart. In the course of eighteen months, Kendra found her baby in a coma, ran over her five-year-old, and nearly lost her eight-year-old to a septic ruptured appendix. Lost and Found is the story of how God used those events to transform her family’s self-righteous religion into freedom in Christ.

Lost and Found: Losing Religion, Finding Grace (New Growth Press, February 2017)

The “right” homeschooling philosophy. The “right” brand of theology. The “right” meal-planning, home-managing, keep-it-all-together parenting.

Kendra Fletcher, homeschooling mom of eight, had it all “right,” until it all fell apart. In the course of eighteen months, Kendra found her baby in a coma, ran over her five-year-old, and nearly lost her eight-year-old to a septic ruptured appendix. Lost and Found is the story of how God used those events to transform her family’s self-righteous religion into freedom in Christ.

Fletcher’s debut book is the gripping true story of how God used suffering to save her family from empty religion. As wave after wave of crisis hit, the Fletchers discovered that getting religion “right” wasn’t a good substitute for a living relationship with a loving God. Through their suffering, they learned about misplaced identities and false hope, and they threw themselves wholly into the arms of Jesus—where they found the grace they needed.

Fletcher, a well-known writer and conference speaker in Christian homeschooling circles, addresses the quiet legalism that so easily infiltrates Christian communities and exposes the dangers of focusing our hopes on the “right” ways of worship, work, and family life. More than a memoir, Lost and Found invites all of us to give up the things that hold us in bondage and find our value, worth, significance, hope, and identity in Christ alone.

This is one of those books, that will encourage you in your Christian walk. But, you will need a hanky for some Texas-sized tears. Sometimes one needs to hear the gospel from another’s perspective. This is one that I will treasure forever and will encourage others to read.

Lost and Found provided a fascinating insight into one woman’s disturbing experiences within the US purity culture and homeschool movement.

I love that this book is written based on personal experience. The family dynamic/concept is amazing and helps us as readers all relate. It’s not an extremely long book, it’s actually rather short compared to the most average books but it’s a good read. It’s enlightening and makes you understand the feelings of the author as she tells her story.

This is the story of a family that had a form of  godliness but denying the power of it. On the outside they look like they were doing everything right. They homeschooled their kids, dressed modestly, and associated with only those that fit into their religious circle. But they lacked in relationship of the heart with the Lord.

Often as moms we need that reminder, while we desire to do our best job raising our kids…ultimately we are not the ones in control of the outcome…our kids have free will and God has a plan. I am not a great parent if all my children stay in the faith, I am not a bad parent if all my children walk away from the faith…but I am the parent in the trenches fighting for their hearts and pointing them to the truth. Kendra shares that story.

This is a must-read for every Christian woman today. I’ve seen obvious signs of legalism in certain popular Christian circles, and even in my own church, and it can be difficult to root them out. However, this book really opened my eyes and helped me see certain sins and biases in my own heart and life as well. Highly recommended.

Such an incredible book about moving out of religion and into grace with Jesus. I loved the boldness of Fletcher in sharing her family’s story. This book was just what I needed to hear and a great reminder of who Jesus is for us!

by Kendra Fletcher may be short on pages (less than 100), but it is certainly NOT short on wisdom and grace gained through the crucible of suffering. Fletcher transparently gives readers a peek at her family’s journey from a focus on religion to a heart to heart relationship with God.

Q: Why ‘freedom in Jesus’? Why is that theme important to you?

Kendra: I grew up in a Christian home, in a Christian church, reading Christian books, and listening to Christian music (Petra was my first concert. *cough*) I knew the gospel but I didn’t know the gospel; I thought it was the story that got you “in”, and didn’t understand how parking there — everyday — could radically transform a life by the work that Jesus does, not the work I pull myself up by my bootstraps and do. It’s that gospel freedom that I want to shout to the world, or at least write over and over and over again.

I knew in the moment I read the description that I just had to read Lost & Found. The book was super short—under a hundred pages—but I doubt that’s why I flew through it so quickly. On top of being extremely interested in the stories, I was very moved by Kendra’s writing.

Kendra shares her story and her heart in such a way that there is no way you cannot empathize with her and yearn for the peace she has found and the relationship she has found with God.  I found myself in tears so many times throughout this books and so many moments of holding my breath, just praying and hoping that things would turn out okay.

This is a great book for all of us that feel the pressure of doing what you are supposed to do because that is what the church or how social groups expect us to be.  It really shows a new side of how it is all about your own belief of putting Jesus first and really having him in your heart.

The book is very short, a quick read. But there’s lots of good stuff here. Kendra writes in a conversational tone as if she’s talking to the reader, so the book is simple and interesting to read. Just as on the podcast, Kendra isn’t afraid to talk about a difficult topic- believers who fall into the trap of relying on their legalistic actions instead of resting in God’s grace.

I really enjoyed this book, as well as the author’s writing. This book examines the difference between religion and a relationship with Jesus. One of the quotes early on in the book, “We loved out religion, more than we loved our savior”, was something that really made sense to me and I think a lot of Christians can probably relate to. Fletcher starts out the book by explaining some of the tragedies that occurred in her family, that helped both Fletcher and her husband see that they needed to make a spiritual change.

This was a quick read. One that causes you to pause and think about your motivations, your actions, and how they effect not only you, but those around you. If you want to see a good example of a Christian who is striving to live a life through Jesus instead of places lists of do’s and don’ts on religion, pick up this book and let Kendra put up some food for thought for you.

This is a book that looks at the raw pain in life and shows how God is substantially present in the struggles offering His grace, mercy, and peace not because we deserve it but because its who He is and what He does. Furthermore, it is about finding our identity in Jesus and our personal relationship with Him.

I finished Lost and Found in one sitting. Under 100 pages, it’s the story of one family’s journey from a legalistic Christianity to understanding true grace, as they endured some unbelievable hardships due to medical emergencies with their children. It was a great autobiography and really made me consider how I would handle the situations they found themselves in.

Lost & Found reads like a testimonial, it was a short read and felt like what Fletcher would share if you were sitting in a cafe together getting to know one another. It left me wanting for another visit. It left me asking questions and wanting to be shown more of the journey from legalism to grace. Where she landed is where we all need to find ourselves… JESUS IS ENOUGH.
