  • ‘MARS . . . WITH VENUS RISING’ BY HOPE TOLER DOUGHERTY

You’ll find loads of creativity in Mars . . . with Venus Rising. I loved the crazy situations that Penn found herself in, and her zany life lifted the mood from the heavy past she had to overcome. I enjoyed seeing how Penn inched her way to healing and forgiveness by dealing with her issues one small piece at a time. Her family, John, and her friends all hugged and pushed and helped her along the way. Doughterty created a winning cast of characters to bring life to the story, and their quirky personalities make the entire story more fun.

This is such a cute book! It’s a good read for a rainy day, or a sunshiney day, or any day for that matter. I found myself curled up in the porch swing reading in the breeze of the afternoon while my son happily played in the front yard. This book is fully humor and, of course, love. The content is clean, and it’s well written with fun characters who find themselves in awkward predicaments at times. Penn lives with her well-meaning aunts who only want the best for her. John is new to town, and rattles Penn’s world. Her parents died as a result of a plane crash. She finds she has feelings for John, until she finds out he’s a pilot. Will this impact their life together?! You’ll have to read it yourself to find out!

I found the story and the characters to be quirky and lovable. The story progresses nicely and kept me interested in seeing what might happen next. There isn’t significant growth experienced by the characters, but the story does shows how faith can get you through things that feel beyond your strength and allow you the confidence to proceed with other things in the future.

  • ‘MARS . . . WITH VENUS RISING’ BY HOPE TOLER DOUGHERTY

Mars . . . With Venus Rising is a Christian Romance novel by Hope Toler Dougherty. It is a slow developing love story that I wish had just a touch of spontaneity in it. I found myself yelling internally at the main characters at almost every turn. Penn is fearful to the point of ridiculousness. For example, she was shocked at her first encounter with John because he was wearing head-to-toe black and rode a motorcycle. *rolls eyes* John has a zest for life but absolutely no social skills when it comes to interacting with women. If the hero of the story is going to ride a motorcycle you have to give him at least a touch of suave.

  • ‘MARS . . . WITH VENUS RISING’ (REVIEW)

Honestly, Penn irritates me. I can’t say that I empathize with her, because I have never had a loss like her fictional loss. But she quivers with fear about every little thing, and her incredibly low self-esteem made me pity her and want to walk away from her, rather than befriend her character. Fortunately, John is a better man than I, because he sees something in Penn and sticks around. The aunts are the best part of the book, in my opinion. They are quirky and fun-spirited and AWESOME cooks. The story ends up with a happy ending, with Penn breaking out of her shell a bit, so that’s good at least.

  • ‘MARS . . . WITH VENUS RISING’ BY HOPE TOLER DOUGHERTY

If you enjoy a slow read with humor and charm then this is the book for you. It doesn’t have drama, twist or turns, it does have romance, fun, faith and down right wholesome goodness. The characters are loving and caring people with big personalities. I would recommend this to those that want a very basic romantic read, for any ages. It was a little slow for my regular read, but good for the relaxing summer days coming. . .The cover of the book doesn’t really do it justice, I felt that the cover needed to be softer and warmer for what the book was about.

  • THAT SLOW, STEADY KIND OF LOVE

I am not, however, enamored by the love story. What caught my attention are the characters of Jancie and Winnie, Penn’s aunts, who are the type of aunts you’d like to live in the same house with. They’re fun and caring. Their desserts will make you warm and fuzzy and will remind you of Christmas and bake sales. The author doesn’t leave you salivating because she included recipes of the aunts’ much raved-about desserts.

Take note of the recipes of the desserts at the end of the book. I already copied them and stacked them in my growing collection of recipes from all over the world.

Penn’s aunts were so fun and I enjoyed hearing about them in the story. I also liked all the food references and the few recipes that were included. I thought there were some real life situtations that a lot of people can relate to. The book was very light to me and a very quick read. It was fun how Penn and John played off of each other. • ‘MARS . . . WITH VENUS RISING’

Try as I might I just couldn’t finish this book. I made it through the first few chapters and then gave up. The story didn’t pull me in, the characters were not real, the dialogue was bland, there was too much internal dialogue, and the book was wordy (and with some of those words spelled wrong “break” for “brake” – referring to driving). I’m a Pittsburgh native and all of the Martian talk was a little overdone. I don’t like leaving bad reviews because I know how much work goes into writing a book, this had a good idea but was not edited enough to make it tight and easy to read.

MARS . . . WITH VENUS RISING is a cute contemporary romance, set, where else, but in Mars. The town, that is. Not the planet. Add some matchmaking aunts, a meddling horse, and a town festival and you have a romance guaranteed to send our heroine flying off into space–on a spaceship, not an airplane. I enjoyed MARS . . . • ‘MARS . . . WITH VENUS RISING’ — HOPE TOLER DOUGHERTY

Hope drew me into the story from page one where PERI, an unusual name for an unusual horse who like to socialize on her own, made her appearance. Although she is not the main character, she definitely brings out aspects of both Penn and John’s that we would not know about otherwise. I do not think this was meant to be a humorous story, but it turned out to be delightful, as both John and Penn are able to deal with their past perceptions and fears. It was well written, engaged the mind and I enjoyed it immensely. I would recommend this book to any discerning reader of any age between early teenage years to one hundred years old.
