Mermaid Moon (Thomas Nelson, January 2016)

Mallory’s mother died fifteen years ago. But her father’s last words on the phone were unmistakable: “Find . . . mother.”

Shame and confusion have kept Mallory Davis from her home for the last fifteen years, but when her dad mysteriously dies on his mail boat route, she doesn’t have any choice but to go back to Mermaid Point.

Mallory believes her father was murdered and childhood sweetheart Kevin O’Connor, game warden in Downeast Maine, confirms her suspicions. But Kevin is wary of helping Mallory in her search. She broke his heart—and left—without a word, years ago.

When Mallory begins receiving threats on her own life—and her beloved teenage daughter, Haylie—their search intensifies. There’s a tangled web within the supposed murder, and it involves much more than what meets the eye.

As answers begin to fall into place, Mallory realizes her search is about more than finding her father’s killer—it is also about finding herself again . . . and possibly about healing what was broken so long ago with Kevin. She just has to stay alive long enough to put all the pieces together.

Running from your past can be dangerous

Colleen Coble writes mystery with themes of returning home, forgiving and healing broken relationships

12/3/2015 || Seattle: Shame can cause people to make drastic, sometimes life-altering decisions. When they experience the consequences of failure, whether at their own hands or at the hands of others, their instinct can be to retreat to avoid experiencing hurt again. That knee-jerk reaction can strain relationships and lead to isolation. This is one of the themes award-winning author Colleen Coble chose to examine in the second book in her Sunset Cove series, Mermaid Moon (Thomas Nelson/January 12, 2016/ISBN: 978-1401690281/$15.99).

Remorse and confusion has kept single mom Mallory Davis from her hometown of sleepy Down East, Maine, for the last 15 years. When her father mysteriously dies, though, she’s forced to return. Her relationship with her father had been tense since she left, but she was the one he called in his final moments.  His last words echo in her heart: “Find . . . mother.” Yet her mother has been dead for fifteen years. What could he have possibly meant?

Mallory comes to believe her father was murdered, and her childhood sweetheart, Down East game warden Kevin O’Connor, confirms her suspicions. Mallory trampled Kevin’s heart when she left without a word all those years ago, and he is wary of helping Mallory in her search. Everything changes when Mallory begins receiving threats on her life and the life of her teenage daughter, Haylie. As their search intensifies, they find a tangled web of mystery and deceit whose sticky threads reach deep into Mallory’s past. As answers begin to fall into place, Mallory realizes her search is about much more than finding her father’s killer; it’s about the hope of finding herself again — and maybe even another chance at love. She just has to stay alive long enough to put the pieces together.

The twists and turns of Mermaid Moon will keep readers engaged in its fast-paced story, but beyond entertainment, Coble hopes all will walk away knowing where to turn when they’re ready to find healing and freedom from regret. “Personal shame strikes at our core because we feel we can never make up for that failure. We fear the relationship can never be mended,” Coble explains. “God doesn’t want us to carry around that burden of guilt. We can be free of it if we realize He forgave it along ago. We’re the ones still lugging it around.”

Coble is currently working on the third installment in the Sunset Cove series, Twilight at Blueberry Barrens. Coble says readers will definitely pick up on a specific theme as they read each book. “I wanted these books to examine the various ways we all come to family,” she reveals. “Some are born into a family, some are adopted, and some create their own family with friends.”

Colleen has done it again. This is a book that will keep you enthralled and turning page after page just wanting to find out what happens next. It is fill with suspense and excitement, a sweet romance, and general adventure. Colleen has a way of weaving a mystery with fun twists and turns that keep you guessing and just when you think you have it she will throw you a twist again.

This is the second book in the Sunset Cove series, but it can stand alone as well as compliment the series. The characters are very well developed and strong. They are believable and interesting. There were time I would catch myself feeling like I was a part of the mystery and routing on the romance. This is a great book!

We have phenomenal book by Coleen Coble this is the second book in The Sunset Cove series. I have fell in love with the writing of Coble.

This book totally had you on the edge of your seat from the begining as each page turned, you were kept in suspense trying to figure out who the bad guy is.

The setting of the book gives you such vivid images of what the actual scene would look like if you were the one in the story.

Mermaid Moon is full of unexpected twists and turns. A page turner that will keep you up reading at night. This book is filled with suspense and leave you guessing until the very end.

This is book two in Colleen Coble’s ‘Sunset Cove’ series. While you won’t be lost with the main part of the story, there are some characters from book one that carried over into this book. Their story line isn’t a big part of this book, but I read the first book and had already forgotten their story, so it was difficult to keep up with that part of the book. I do recommend that you read book one first.

While I enjoyed this suspenseful story, there are some things that I’m still confused about. Mainly the criminal part. Maybe it’s just me. It was late when I was reading the end.

Mermaid Moon by Colleen Coble is a beautifully written and captivating novel. Coble effectively tells the love story between main characters Mallory and Kevin, while also giving the reader a mystery to piece together.I was intrigued by this novel from the start. In the first few pages, Mallory got thrown right into the middle of what seemed to be a suspicious death. Throughout the rest of the novel, Coble doesn’t miss a beat in regards to keeping the reader interested. There are many twists in the plot that kept me intrigued and seeking more information. This desire to know everything that was going on kept me reading to the very last page.

Mermaid Moon is a novel that teaches the values of second chances, that true love waits, and that it may be late to say sorry but it’s never too late to forgive. Skip 50 Shades of Grey. I recommend this book for an easy, light, and inspiring Friday night read.

I cannot stress enough what an amazing author Mrs. Coble is, however, this book didn’t impress me as much as her previous ones. To me, it was much slower and it didn’t flow as well.

Mermaid Moon is book 2 in the Sunset Cove series and it is an exciting addition to the story! I loved how Colleen brought in the characters from The Inn At Ocean’s Edge and let us finish their stories as well as starting new stories with new characters.

The plot was full of twists, turns and unsuspected surprises that kept the book firmly in my hands. The characters were well made and described well enough that I could “see” them easily. Colleen Coble has an eccentric imagination that never fails to entertain as well shock with her stories. I was immensely pleased with Mermaid Moon and cannot wait for book 3!

This was my first time reading a Colleen Coble novel, and I really enjoyed it. While I felt it took a little bit of time to get in to the “action” part of it, it read so easily that I wanted to keep reading. The characters were interesting and easily relate-able. Once it picked up, I had to continue reading to see what was going to happen. There were a few different things going on throughout the book, including Mallory and Kevin trying to solve the mystery of her father’s death, uncovering the truth about her past, and also resolving circumstances between them that stemmed from their choppy past, all while avoiding constant threat from the villains in the novel. I have to say, this book kept me guessing from the get-go. I definitely recommend this novel!

I just love Colleen Coble books because she always leaves it a mystery until the end. I read her last book The Inn at Ocean’s Edge that was amazing and now she is back with a new book called Mermaid Moon. Not only is this book mysterious but keeps you guessing throughout the story. I was literally chewing off my fingernails from the suspense of the story as I did not expect that was going to happen. Without giving out all the details, you need to read it for yourself to find out.

Colleen is great at romance suspense novels, and this one was a good one. She kept me guessing to the last moment. The characters were real and believable, as was the story line. The only thing I did not like was the adoption thread of the story. I did not like how Mallory’s birth mother was portrayed as being selfish and not loving her because she gave her up for adoption. As an adopted child I knew from the time I was 5 or so that I was adopted and my birth mother gave me up because she loved me so much that she wanted me to have a better life. Other than that I enjoyed the book and it kept me up reading past my bed time. I have not read the first book and I didn’t feel lost at all.

When Mallory gets a call from her father, who says some really cryptic words and then winds up dead, Mallory goes on a search to find out what happened to her dad. Mallory doesn’t want to believe that her dad died of a heart attack on his boat, it just doesn’t make sense. She thinks that he was murdered, and she goes to Mermaid Point to figure out the mystery surrounding his strange death.

Then, Mallory starts to receive death threats of her own, now she’s pissed and terrified. In the midst of this mystery, she starts to gain feelings for her long lost love Kevin, who is a little bit uneasy about getting back together with Mallory. The mix between love and murder in this book are just perfect.

Mermaid Moon has all of the plot needed for a fast paced mystery, characters that held my interest and romance. The novel begins with the death of Mallory’s father and we follow her path back to Mermaid Point, where she grew up. I especially enjoyed the parts of the story that deal with Mallory’s family and issues in her past.

Mermaid Moon is the second novel in the Sunset Cove Series. I haven’t read the first book, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, but I’m putting it on my to-read list. I very much enjoyed the setting and characters, so I’m very pleased Mermaid Moon is part of a series.

This solid suspense read draws Mallory Davis back home to Mermaid Point, Maine after a fifteen-year absence. Receiving a telephone call from her dying father is enough to start Mallory’s blood pumping and mind racing, but when her father tells her to find her mother, who Mallory has believed to be dead for 15 years, she must figure out the mystery.

Her former beau, Kevin O’Connor, is reluctant to help Mallory piece together the events of past and present to solve the long-time mystery and her father’s recent murder. But the investigation intensifies when Mallory and her daughter, Haylie, begin receiving threats.

I’d read Colleen’s first book in this series, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, and found it to be one of the best mysteries I’d ever read, so I jumped at the chance to review Mermaid Moon. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Colleen has a great way of keeping the secret until the end. I am usually really good at unraveling mysteries, and it kind of makes them boring for me. But Colleen’s keep me on the edge of my seat, guessing back and forth between villains and innocents. I love how she writes her characters and the dialogue is great and realistic. She’s a brilliant writer and I recommend her books to anyone who loves good, clean romance with a twist of suspense. I was also thrilled to read that Colleen is a fellow Hoosier. Woohoo!

I loved how this novel was set in Sunset Cove – which allowed some of our favorite characters from past books to make appearances. This novel flowed beautifully and the story was giving enough time to unfold, something I truly appreciate. Our main character Mallory is a strong, independent woman who needs to learn to let go of the past and move onto a new future. For her that means dealing with the past and opening herself up for forgiveness.

There are so many twists and turns to this fantastic story, you’ll be finding yourself thinking you know what’s really happening only to realize it’s not that at all. The greatest thing I took away from this book was that we must not blame ourselves for what we think we’ve done in the past. A lot of times what we think we’ve done, we didn’t do at all and we live our lives in despair when what we need to do is have forgiveness for ourselves!

This is such an amazing story. I just loved it and I know you will, too! It’s a great thriller/mystery/romance and the story carries you with it from the beginning to the end! I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Mermaid Moon is an intricate mix of romance and suspense with neither element overshadowing the other. In my opinion, it takes a truly talented writer to weave together romance and suspense without one being a weaker part of the story than the other. While this is the second book in the Sunset Cove series it is a stand alone novel but if I were you I’d read the first one (The Inn at Ocean’s Edge) just because it contains its own jaw-dropping element of surprise that you don’t want to miss. I really loved this book.

My daughter asked if she could read it. She’s 13 and although this is a crime mystery there is nothing in it that I was uncomfortable with her reading. She loved it too! The story actually keeps you guessing till the end, with a few twists and turns. The characters are great too. The only thing that seemed odd to me if the cover of the book. In the story the main character has long flowing hair – I mean waist length, and on the cover the models hair is quite short. So I am not sure who that’s supposed to be?

Coble pulled out all the stops with this one. There are a couple of mysterious people who the reader doesn’t know about, and it stays that way for a lot of the book. There are threats, break-ins, kidnapping, and more.

I tagged this book as a “read-in-one-sitting book”, and it was for me. Once I started, I didn’t want to put it down; so I read it in one sitting. There were a few surprises I didn’t see coming, and enough suspense to keep me turning the pages as fast as I could read them. This was my first Colleen Coble book, and I know she has quite a following. This book is “romantic suspense” – not my typical genre, but I enjoyed it. Poor Mallory has a lot of issues here and while trying to discover the events leading up to her father’s death (murder?), she uncovers and revisits things from her past that she’d rather leave forgotten. Mallory teams with Kevin, former beau and trusty game warden, to solve the mystery, and ultimately to save her own daughter’s life.

The romantic tension in this story was fabulous! Mallory and Kevin have some serious and painful history to overcome, yet the sparks of attraction began early on in the book. I loved the progression of their relationship and the hurdles they had to overcome.

I also really enjoyed the mystery and suspense thread that ran throughout the entire book. I had some suspicions about who was causing all of the trouble and why, however, I was pleasantly surprised that the author really did keep me guessing regarding certain important characters and motivations.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with Colleen Coble’s latest book – Mermaid Moon. With the sweet title and beautiful cover, I figured it would be a sweet romance.

Boy, was I wrong! This book is one rollercoaster ride of a suspenseful mystery that will absolutely glue the reader to the pages! Be prepared to stay up all night with this one, and don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Mermaid Moon is the second book in Coble’s Sunset Cove novels, but first time readers (such as I) can enjoy this novel as a stand-alone.

I loved the mystery and romance but I had trouble staying as invested as I have with her previous books. I think perhaps I was looking for the secondary characters to have a little more depth, especially the daughters. Still, the tension between Kevin and Mallory, added with the mystery of Mallory’s father’s death kept me turning pages.

I think you will turn the pages, too.

I really enjoyed the first book Inn at Sunset Cove and was hoping I would equally enjoy the second. While I did like Mermaid Moon, I didn’t love it.

I will say that I did enjoy the mystery in this story. It was really intriguing and had a few twists. There was one big surprise toward the end that I definitely didn’t see coming. The whole thing kept me guessing and I was eager to get to the end to find out the whole story. What I didn’t love was romance part of the book. I felt like Mallory and Kevin got back together a bit too quickly for me. I just wasn’t feeling the bond between them. I also was a bit underwhelmed by the “scandal” that sent Mallory fleeing from her home. If you are looking for a good clean mystery, there is one in this book. I do recommend checking it out.

Mermaid Moon is another winner from award winning romantic suspense author, Colleen Coble. I enjoyed getting to know Mallory and Kevin. Kevin was a dear, kind man, devoted to his job, his blind daughter and Mallory. The story was fairly predictable (I figured out who the real mom was early on but not the dad, nor the reason for the mystery until near the end.) I would’ve liked to have seen more of Sadie in the story, too. However, that said, I did enjoy reading Mermaid Moon and while it wasn’t my favorite Colleen Coble book, it wasn’t my least favorite either. I enjoyed the Maine setting and Mallory’s tenaciousness. I also greatly admired Kevin’s devotion. A good mystery that mostly kept me guessing.

I absolutely loved Mermaid Moon, Colleen Coble’s latest novel. This book is full or suspense and romance just like the previous novel in this series. Mallory returns home to the place that she has avoided for several years after the death of her father. This is just the very surface of the story and the journey home.

For me, nothing is better than reading a romantic suspense novel and trying to figure out whodunit but not being able to. I mean it is nice to guess throughout but when I figure it out from the beginning it kind of ruins it for me. I guess it makes me feel like I worked my brain, I tried figure it out but I had to wait till the end to learn who did it.

I enjoyed reading about familiar friends from the previous book in this series. This book was good, very action packed, lots of twists and turns in the story. You never knew what was going to happen next. The book was a bit wordy at over 300 pages, it seemed to drag in some spots because of this, but still an amazing suspense story. I do love Colleen’s books and am willing to read through those wordy part. I give this book 4.5 stars. A great story, looking forward to the next in the series.

If I’d had a day to myself, I might have read this novel through in one sitting! I’ve never read any of Colleen Coble’s cowboy meets cowgirl stories, but I have really enjoyed her Sunset Cove novels set in Maine. Last spring I read The Inn at Ocean’s Edge and was mesmerized by her ability to write complex plots that interweave….

Although I highly recommend reading the books in order, Mermaid Moon will stand alone. Reversing the order will be a bit of a spoiler for the first book. So get them both and enjoy some long winter evenings curled up with a couple of really good books and a good cup of hot tea or cocoa. Just don’t forget to lock the doors first….

Coble’s really hit the mark with her latest book Mermaid Moon. The story has it all – murder, mystery, long-lost love, and a spiritual journey. Mallory’s blundering determination to find her father’s killer is contrasted with Kevin’s lawman know-how, and the contrast shows off the suspense Coble has hemmed into the story.

Similar to the first book in the series, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, Colleen Coble has creatively crafted a suspenseful mystery with a little romance tossed about. The books’ heroine, Mallory, is a strong character that I instantly liked; the same goes for her romantic-interest, Kevin. While there were a few predictable moments here and there, the murder mystery plot kept me turning the pages. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading from beginning to the end.

I was looking for a new book to read when I found Mermaid Moon by Colleen Coble. I am not normally a mystery reader but there are some that interest me as long as they aren’t scary. I decided to take a chance and I am glad that I did! I enjoyed this book and the interesting plot twists. I wasn’t sure what to expect but there was stuff going on at Mallory’s home and Mallory’s childhood home which was all intertwined. The different scenery kept me wondering where they were going to be next. I most liked the interesting scenery with the romance twist. When Mallory goes home and immediately goes back to the childhood friendship with Kevin, it brings up the past relationship that ended badly when she lost her mother, their baby and broke their engagement. There were tons of surprises!

As is expected in Colleen’s stories, she keeps you guessing through the twists and turns of the story. You know there is more to the characters than meets the eye, but exactly how they all fit together is what keeps you turning the pages. Answers to some of the biggest questions take you by surprise, providing resolution in unexpected ways through unexpected people.

As Mallory fights for her very life, she and Keven also find themselves fighting for answers to brokenness from the past and how to forgive themselves and others. An element of faith, although not the biggest theme of the book, shows through in their search.

Perhaps my expectations were a bit too high coming off of The Inn at Ocean’s Edge. While the plot of Mermaid Moon is intriguing, I didn’t have that “can’t put this down for anything” feeling that I’d hoped for.

Had I not gone into Mermaid Moon with such high expectations, I think I would have liked it a lot more, as it is a good story. It’s hard to talk about much without getting spoilerish because the novel contains so many twists and turns that are best discovered as you read. But I will say that I especially enjoyed watching Mallory’s relationship with her friend and neighbor Carol develop throughout the novel, and it was nice to see Mallory connect with people from her past.

Colleen Coble’s books rock. Her new Sunset Cove series beginning with The Inn at Sunset Cove, left me wanting more. The coastal Maine setting lends itself to mystery and intrigue. In the latest novel, Mermaid Moon, the twists and turns kept me up too late. And I loved it.

… As I read the story and thought I knew who did it, another twist turned the corner and made me doubt my conclusion. The book held me in suspense right to the end. The romantic touches and the beautiful setting added appeal. If you enjoy suspense, you’ll love Colleen’s latest book.

There was murder. There was mystery. There was kidnapping. There was arson. There was love!

I completely enjoyed the characters and was enthralled with the setting. I can’t even imagine living somewhere that having a boat to travel from island to island is as common as owning a car for transportation.

Mermaid Moon is the second book in Colleen Coble’s Sunset Cove series. I had the pleasure of reviewing the first book in this series, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, last year. Readers who enjoyed that book will enjoy seeing Claire again in Mermaid Moon, as a friend to Mallory.

The romantic suspense in this novel starts early on, and takes many twists and turns through the book.

The mystery aspects of the book are compelling, and make this novel move quickly along. It was enjoyable reading how Mallory and Kevin worked together to solve the mystery.

Mermaid Moon is also an inspiring novel about grace, second chances, and forgiveness. Colleen Coble has a deft way of interweaving inspiration, mystery, and romance.

I enjoyed Mermaid Moon, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a smartly written romantic suspense novel.

Having spent many summer vacations in Maine with my Dad’s side of the family I was really looking forward to jumping into Colleen Coble’s latest mystery set on the coast. Coble did a wonderful job bringing the setting to life and her descriptions brought back memories of combing the rocky shores for sea glass. The storyline was intriguing and action-packed up until the end.
However, I found the character’s reactions to many situations to be unrealistic, which made it very hard for me to really get behind the story.

The thing I loved most about this book is it wasn’t predictable! There were a few things where I saw where they were going, like the relationship between Mallory and Kevin. Then there were others though like the mystery behind her parents untimely deaths.

There was one HUGE secret I never saw coming that isn’t revealed until the last few chapters. Oh how I love to be shocked in a book. It’s so rare! I can’t give you any hints about that one but trust me, it’s worth the read!

I liked the realness in the characters and that they seemed like normal people. I get so tired of books where everyone is perfect and they are beautiful with incredible jobs and everything in the world going for them. That’s just not reality and takes away from the characters being authentic. Mallory and Kevin both have issues from their past including failed marriage, divorce, single parenting, bratty teenager, child with a handicap and parental issues between them. Now these are people I can relate to!

I connected with these characters and felt invested in them and their future. I really like romantic suspense because the suspense adds such an interesting dimension to a romance that might otherwise be more boring. Mermaid Moon really has it all!

The second Sunset Cove novel takes us back to coastal Maine and introduces us to new characters as well as renewing acquaintances from the first title in the series. Just as with The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, this book focuses on identity and family connections. Because of the continuity, it’s worthwhile reading the series in order.

While there are twists and turns, I don’t think it’s as strong a title as its predecessor. The motive for the criminal acts felt a little convoluted and I had problems wrapping my head around it. There are some elements, however, that I definitely enjoyed such as the relationship between the daughters from Kevin and Mallory’s previous marriages.

The third book in the series, Twilight at Blueberry Barrens, will be released later in the year.

It wasn’t an obvious from the get go plot, and I appreciated that a lot. The characters all have a history with one another, and as you delve deeper into the book you realize exactly how strongly those ties are….and some are VERY unexpected! I will say I was left more than a bit shocked at a couple points in the book! The characters are well developed, and the tension between Kevin and Mallory is just enough to keep you reading, but not so much that it drowns the story or makes you feel uncomfortable. All in all, I REALLY loved this book a LOT! I simply couldn’t put it down. LOVED IT!!!!!!

n the world of Christian publishing, Colleen Coble is becoming one of those authors that stand out from the crowd. She writes christian books, but her stories have an appeal that could reach out and minister to a much wider audience. Her latest novel, Mermaid Moon, is no exception.

What I like about Coble’s books from a Christian perspective is that the story isn’t inherently christian. Coble writes books of people that are living in the world day-to-day, while at the same time Coble mirrors a christian answer to those problems. Coble writes books that could appeal to anyone, Christian or not. For example, other than a funeral, the characters don’t attend church weekly and Mallory and Kevin live with choices they made in the past while learning to accept the grace of forgiveness of today.
