God’s Plans for Your Life are Grander Than Your Own

Rachel Hauck’s Once Upon a Prince Shows What God Can Do When You Leave Your Heart Open

Seattle: Every little girl dreams of being a princess. Every woman longs to be treated like royalty. We’re all just a little bit fascinated by royal weddings and the princess that lives in every woman. That’s why readers will fall in love with Once Upon a Prince (Zondervan/May 7, 2013/ISBN 978-0310315476/$14.99), the first release in the Royal Wedding Series by award-winning author Rachel Hauck.

“When my alarm went off at 5:00 AM the morning Prince William married Catherine Middleton, my first thought was, ‘Do I really want to get out of bed for this wedding? It’s so early!’” admits Hauck. “But the new Duchess of Cambridge captured me as well as the rest of the world with her poise and confidence. She is, in many ways, like me. An ordinary girl marrying the man she loved, living her dream. My imagination took hold, and that’s when Susanna and Nathaniel’s story started coming to life.”

Susanna Truitt never dreamed of a great romance or being treated like a princess — just to marry the man she planned to marry for the past twelve years. It was all a part of her grand plan. However, when her high-school-sweetheart-turned-Marine-officer broke up with her instead of proposing, Susanna scrambles to rebuild her life. Struggling with personal and professional disappointments, what was the plan for the rest of her life now?

The last thing Prince Nathaniel expected to find on his American holiday to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, was the queen of his heart. All he was looking for was a break from the realities of home. After all, a prince had duties. His family’s tense political situation all but had his bride chosen for him. When Prince Nathaniel comes to Susanna’s aid under the fabled Lover’s Oak, he’s blindsided by love.

He’s a royal prince, and she’s an ordinary girl — their lives were worlds apart with traditions and politics to consider. They can’t work. But everything changes when Susanna receives an invitation to Nathaniel’s coronation. It’s the ultimate choice: His kingdom or her heart? God’s will or their own?

There is more to Once Upon a Prince than a royal love story.  Hauck hopes that once readers reach the end of the book, they realize: God has a beautiful plan for them! She even works some of her own experience into the story. “The ‘I’ve got nothing’ journey Susanna experiences is my personal journey. It’s the dialog and MO between the Lord and me. Everyone is different, but I believe God leads us and directs us with recognizable patterns,” she said. “I know how hard it is to wait on the Lord. We feel we’re responsible for our own destiny, but He has amazing plans for us and  works all things together for good.”

And there’s a bigger love story to consider — it, too, makes its way into Once Upon a Prince. “We should never give up on love. Love is always for the greater good of others, as well as us. I think we have to do is redefine love. Sometimes actions we consider love are really not love at all. Jesus gave up all the beauty and majesty of splendor of Heaven, became a man and died a cruel death on a cross. All for love. Wow, what kind of love is that? Not the world’s definition of love but the perfect model for true love.”

Join Rachel Hauck for a 12-Day Royal Wedding Preparation Giveaway May 16-27, followed by a Facebook Party on May 28 at 8:00 PM EDT where she will chat with readers. Watch for more details on her Facebook Page.

Advance Praise

“This is classic romance at its very best.”

~ Debbie Macomber, New York Times bestselling author

“Hauck spins a surprisingly believable royal-meets-commoner love story. Facing political scheming and seemingly immovable royal traditions, the couple discovers that their happily-ever-after will require courage and faith not found in fairy tales. Well-developed secondary characters are entertaining in their own right, adding a quirky touch (as do cameo-style appearances by real-life royals). Hauck fans will find a gem of a tale.”

~ Publishers Weekly starred review

“Hauck’s modern-day fairy tale will bring a smile to readers’ faces. Fans of the Princess Diaries series will love this ‘ordinary girl meets prince’ story!”

~ Have you ever had to give up on one of your plans, like Susanne did, because it wasn’t progressing or someone came along who threw the plan off track?

  • Everything in ordinary girl Susanna Truitt’s life seems to be going wrong. So what a treat when–over all the more sophisticated guests–she catches the eye of a prince! What a let down this story would be if that prince—Susanna’s catalyst for change—were not worthy of all the fuss. But no fear, Prince Nathaniel is how I’d imagine a young King David. He’s all that we would wish any king to be: upright, pure, prayerful, kind, down-to-earth, and, of course, handsome! His rich inner life gives him depth and helps us believe any young lady would be well-rewarded for changing her life for him. I really hope he & Susanna show up in future books in this series!

I inhaled this one and fell in love over and over again not only with Nate, but also with Susanna’s fate in life. It seems like things go from bad to worse at every opportunity and you just hope with fingers crossed and baited breath that she and Nate will find that “happily ever after”. The saddest part of this novel was finishing it too soon. I even interrupted my husband several times to share parts of this book with him. “Oh babe, she finds out he’s really a prince. I hope they fall in love and get married!” I look forward to many more in this series. Finally a big girls fairy tale series I can fall in love with time and time again. This wasn’t my first Rachel Hauck novel and it won’t be my last. This one rate a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Nate and Susanna’s story was made even better by an amazing group of secondary characters. Aurora was especially interesting. She added a mysterious vibe and a fun touch to the reading experience. I would have loved to have seen more of her. She was sort of like a Fairy Godmother, which makes me love this book even more. ;) Susanna’s family is the Southern experience at its best. You can’t help but love them.

Once Upon a Prince feeds into our little girl fantasies—who among us didn’t dream of growing up to be a princess? If you take a pinch of The Prince and Me, a dash of The Princess Diaries, and throw in a healthy dose of the British royal wedding, you have Once Upon a Prince.

If you love a good love story—and really, who doesn’t?—then I highly recommend you check out Once Upon a Prince … and then join me in anxiously awaiting the next book in this series!

I have been waiting for a series a long time and the first book is finally here! Rachel Hauck’s new Once Upon a Prince is a dream of a book. From the first page I wanted Susanna to find herself and happiness, and Prince Nathaniel — happy sigh — is the perfect hero. He’s romantic. He’s honorable. He’s conflicted. And Susanna, instead of trying to steal him away, tries to help him be more the man he was created to be. This book reads like a fairy tale. Ancient kingdom. Beautiful country. Beautiful girl who can’t be chosen to be princess. While I adored the romance, the spiritual thread is what left me sighing with contentment and what has my thoughts returning to the pages. It is a beautiful book — perfect for summer reading.

  • Once Upon a Prince was a charming story along the lines of The Princess Diary. If you loved those movies, you’ll love this book. The characters were incredibly likeable, the prince was totally charming but also totally real, and the ending was enchanting.

Fairy tale weddings, handsome princes, happily-ever-afters – I love them all! And in Rachel Hauck’s new book, “Once Upon A Prince,” readers get all that and a whole lot more!

This is just a charming book – with a feisty heroine, a handsome and debonair prince, great settings, fun adventures – it’s just the whole package for anyone who loves a great story with a great cast of characters. This was the perfect weekend read – but there is only one problem! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series! (write fast, Rachel!!)

On top of all the fun and romance, there is also a great message of faith and inspiration found in this delightful novel. I highly recommend it!

So much more than just a sweet romance! Once Upon a Prince is a lesson in trusting in God and learning to follow him, even when it isn’t easy.

I loved every page of this book! The characters? Just amazing! Susanna and her family, the Prince (what’s not to love about a prince?) and everyone else, done with such depth and all so believable.

The settings? You almost believe you are there! From the Georgia beach to the Kingdom of Brighton, every detail is perfect.

The story? It will make you laugh and cry and squeal with happiness. It was like riding a roller coaster, it will keep you guessing until the end (and squealing yet again…)!

A fun read, right out of a fairy tale or a movie. I loved the playful banter between the characters, and how Nate had a strong sense of duty and a strong faith. And Susanna’s family was tons of fun, even her Aunt Rue!

I loved how Ms. Hauck realistically brought a fairy tale to life in modern times. The characters came to life and I felt like I was settling in with my favorite chick flick :)

This story is filled with so much strong emotion and such great reminders that God has a plan for all of us and, although it might not be what we expect, it is a far greater plan that we could ever imagine on our own! That was a great reminder for me in my own personal life right now!

What a refreshing read. A true modern day fairy tale, one where the girl gets her prince. This was book that I couldn’t put down, and since it was a romance, with no mystery or intrigue, that is high praise from me. The character’s are so wonderful and Rachel writes so well, you feel like you really know them and you can feel their pain. We all think it must be great to be a royal, but from reading this book, I don’t think I would want to be a royal with all of the restrictions and expectations they have on them. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a lite, quick, feel good read, that has GOD at the center throughout the book, then this is the book for you. Grea job Rachel.

If you liked the Royal Diaries series then you’ll like this book. Even though Susanna doesn’t find out that “Nate” is a prince right away the story revolves around a simple American girl and a European prince. There is a little bit of misunderstanding and a lot of needing to trust God.

I found myself feeling like the omniscient third person narrator at times during the story because it jumps between Nate and Susanna apart and while they don’t know what’s going on, you do. It was an interesting place to be especially as Susanna’s world is falling apart and she doesn’t know what will happen next, while I could see the bigger picture. Made me think about how we see life in general.

I have loved Rachel’s previous novels but she has outdone herself with “Once Upon a Prince”! I have to say that it is the perfect modern fairytale if there ever was one yet everything is not all sweetness and light. The author has skillfully managed to explore the depths of human emotions while at the same time penning an almost faultless romantic story.

This is the way we all want our lives to work out-the girl wants the Prince she always dreamed of and the Prince wants that very special girl. Maybe the guys won’t admit it but I think we have all wanted to be the Prince in “Sleeping Beauty” that battled through the forest of thorns and fought the fire-breathing dragon to rescue the woman and have it all work out. Well Prince Nathaniel doesn’t have to do all that but he does have his work cut out for him if he wants to wed Susanna. “Once Upon A Prince” is a romance that focuses on social standings and how, in reality, we are all just men and women not royalty and commoners.

Once Upon a PrinceOnce Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’m shamelessly admitting that I read this because of my fascination with Kate and William. I know, I’m an adult but it truly is like a modern fairy tale where the regular girl meets a prince and falls in love.

So, of course this book appealed to the little girl in me that still believes in fairy tales and dashing princes that sweep a fair maiden off her feet.

This book was so cliché—honestly though? Cliché was to be expected and I felt like a little girl again only this time I was reading a fairy tale that was a little more suitable for an adult. I really enjoyed this story and I wouldn’t hesitate to read another book by this author.

This story is a like a grown up fairy tale; rather than the characters just meeting and living happily ever after the reader shares in the real life struggles that surround a situation like this. Even though it seems like princess stories are for children, this story really captures the attention of the reader and pulls at the heart strings. My only complaint is that I felt like it ended too soon, I really wanted to further follow the story of Susanna and Nathaniel. Since this is the first book in Hauck’s new Royal Wedding Series I’m holding out hope that I’ll be seeing more of them as the series goes on.

  • Want to believe in fairytale endings with me….if only for a short while? Read this book!

The author takes the reader on a journey that is totally believable despite the premise of the book {a waitress falling in love with a prince}. The premise of the plot sounds like a cliché but the characters are so personable and familiar that the reader not only roots for this romance but envisions it occurring.

With the flair and style of Great Gatsby and the angst and romance of Casablanca, this book takes the reader’s emotions on an unpredictable ride. The girl whose fiance just left her for another woman….who struggles to make ends meet….who doubts her direction in life….she can still have a fairytale ending {or beginning}. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Every little girl dreams of that perfect fairy tale. As little girls become bigg(er) girls we tend to get a *little* bit more realism, but never truly lose that dream of someday falling in love and riding off into the sunset. “Once Upon a Prince” has taken every little girl’s dream and given us a soul mate in Susanna.

I absolutely loved all the characters (well except one but we weren’t supposed to like her!). Nathaniel was completely awesome and I think one of my favorite things about him was how even though he was a prince about to become king he never acted better than anyone and wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. Susanna was also great and I loved how she was always putting others above herself. The secondary characters were really fun especially Susanna’s family.

This was an incredibly sweet romance with characters that I really liked and was rooting for. Yes, the plot was typical, but isn’t that why we love a good romance? This book is definitely falling into that “fairy tale” category that us girls just love.

I loved how Nate took his duties seriously and yet he was very kind and sweet. Susanna was also very likeable, even though she tended to want to control everything – I believe a lot of this was due to her fiance breaking her heart. We can sympathize with her and her hurt.

I loved how this book emphasized that God has a great plan for our life than we can imagine if we will just relax and trust in Him. In this case, a true fairy tale come to life.

I really enjoyed this book and it would be the perfect summer reading book!!

Rachel has written a story full of romance and her characters are easy to connect to. Each one is full of depth, seeking God’s plan for their life. Susanna and Nathaniel are likable. Their friendship develops in a sweet and real way that draws the reader in and makes you want to root for them to be together. A great summer read!

I’ve always loved fairy tales– and my favorite is the Cinderella story. I guess I’m just a romantic at heart. Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck is a modern-day fairy tale romance. It was unrealistic, of course, because fairy tales just are. The prince was from a fictional country, but he’s good friends with Princes Will and Harry. I thought that was a fun twist. The heroine is a small-town southern girl. The characters, settings, and plot were great! I thoroughly enjoyed the read. This is Book One of The Royal Weddings series. I look foward to reading more.

This is the first book I’ve read by Rachel Hauck and I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story. I love the rich prince/poor girl story, and I especially loved the prince being willing to work at anything including clean toilets at Susanna’s mom’s restaurant. Of course they only new him as Nate at the time, no one knew he was actually a prince. The problem was, Nate and Susanna couldn’t be an item, and they could never get married because it was forbidden in his country.

Rachel Hauck weaves an fun, poignant tale with Once Upon A Prince. From my first peek at the cover (isn’t it gorgeous?!?), I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. Hauck is talented in providing just the right blend of romance with a dash of intrigue in this modern-day Prince Charming story. The handsome Prince Nathaniel is thoughtful and deliberate, focused on his duties as a royal yet distracted by the struggling Susanna Truitt. The cast of supporting characters provide entertainment enough on their own, and left me both laughing and groaning (in fun) with them! I love that Susann has an ordinary career that she’s struggling to build and that Nathaniel is so determined to do right by his country. I really enjoyed this respite from the insanity of my life!

I found this to be such a delightful read. It was fun, entertaining, romantic and I read the entire book in one sitting! I personally felt sucked into the story at the very beginning during the emotional breakup. Hauck does a great job developing the characters charm quickly and you cannot help but route for Susanna and Nate’s budding relationship to blossom. Sure, I felt like the ending was a bit predictable in some ways but I am A-OK with that! If you are looking for a clean romance book with a modern day fairy tale feel then look no further, this is a book for you.

I just love modern fairy tales! There was even a fairy godmother of sorts in here. Life doesn’t always go according to how we plan it. Some times we have long periods of waiting that seem to accomplish nothing. Some times they are just what we need before our next big adventure comes.
Susanna is a fantastic character! She has so much grace and wisdom and practicality. Seriously, I have never been so thrilled to see a practical character. She makes it look honorable and desirable. She may not have much insight into her own life in the beginning but she has so much to offer others.
I love that this is book is a “book one.” I am really looking forward to reading more in this series.

I loved this story. It was just fun and full of terrific, quirky characters. Nathaniel and Susanna were fantastic. The premise, while not completely believable wasn’t completely over the top either. I think the author found a perfect blend of fantasy and reality.

  • This book starts out with a break-up, which is not the way you expect and I liked that. It immediately catches your attention and makes you want to keep reading. This story is basically every little girls’ dream…. meeting a prince and falling in love. This book is filled with romance, drama and a little heartbreak. Hauck is a great writer and the characters are so relatable and enjoyable.

I definitely recommend this book to women who love a great modern day romance.

Heavens! Where to start bringing thoughts to order on the first novel of Rachel’s all-new series, ‘Once Upon a Prince.’ I’d set myself up for a deliciously entertaining read which oftentimes can be a detriment but there were no signs of anything “bad” coming up in the book about halfway through and already I’d given this one a 5-star rating. Turns out, that was warranted.

Because we each have our own opinions of what makes a story good, not everyone may find a jewel in Once Upon a Prince. I did and then some. It was pure pleasure reading with a special kind of heart that too many novels skim or forget completely. There was charm, classic romance plus a delightful grouping of characters…

  • If you did enjoy the Princess Diaries as I did, you will enjoy this book. I don’t really follow any royal news because… well, I just don’t care that much. But I find it interesting to read fiction accounts of royal life. This account is honest, if nothing else. More than anything else I’ve read or seen, this book portrays the struggle one faces when taking care of an entire population. As Nate put it in the book, his life is not really his own.

Once Upon a Prince is the most romantic love story of the year! From a sun-kissed southern island to a regal European palace, not a single element of this story has been left bereft of Hauck’s wash of love-colored paint. Susanna Truitt’s situation, although funny as described, rings bleakly true, and too many of us will find something familiar in Prince Nathaniel’s duty-bound story.

Besides completely enjoying the story and the characters, I loved reading the descriptions of life in a palace; and I could imagine what it must have been like for Susanna and her sister to take up residence in a palace as a guest of the queen. The Kingdom of Brighton seemed like it would be a lovely place to take up residency.

Hauck has written a book that is just plain enjoyable. Her ability to bring her characters to life and make the different settings feel the reader is there visiting in person, give this story many layers to peel back and relish. I definitely recommend this book.

I enjoyed reading Rachel’s Once Upon a Prince mostly because I love to sometimes de-stress from life by reading modern takes on old tales, usually those that are clean and inspiring. It makes me think of the world in a better light and fosters hope. She always gives a message in her books about finding your true self and how you can lean on God to do so.

Beyond that, I admit, for the pure fluff of it all, I enjoy a good tale about a forlorn woman and a handsome, lovely hearted Prince coming to heal her heart. Her book will be a hit because we all love a Cinderella story.

I look forward to more fun reads from this series, as well as Rachel Hauck. I love her ideas!

  • This hopeless romantic set her alarm block for an ungodly hour to watch a “commoner” marry a prince, so Rachel Hauck’s modern day royal romance was a perfect fit for my reading list. All of the quintessential elements of a fairytale were present with Rachel’s sassy and cute southern tweaks: a damsel in distress, a charming and chivalrous prince, attraction at first sight, grandiose wooing, and the requisite happily ever after. But Rachel Hauck does not write frivolous stories-a reader can always expect a strong moral and faith element that provoke and incite self-examination.

In Once Upon a Prince, we get an inside look at the budding love between prince and commoner and the challenges that come along with it (and any other “normal” relationship). Even though this kind of love story could have been overly predictable, glamorized, and sensationalized, I love its simplicity because it is a good, wholesome love story. It was incredibly refreshing to my soul to read a pure love story.

This is now the third book I’ve read by Rachel Hauck, and it’s the third book by her that I love.

Cynics will protest that this is a highly unrealistic storyline. Yes, it is improbable, but aren’t all fairy tales? Isn’t that we like them? They give us the chance to escape our ordinary lives. Regular novels do the same. How many women have dreamed of being Elizabeth Bennett to Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy? Others find Jane Eyre’s Rochester irresistible. (For the record, I don’t!) Our lives are unique, but that doesn’t mean we can’t drift away for a couple of hours with a modern-day fairy tale such as Once Upon a Prince. I was happy to do just that, and I hope you will too.

Rachel Hauck’s “Once Upon A Prince” is a fun and sweet read. Susanna is an excellent main character as she is just a typical girl, who wants a happily ever after with her prince. After being dumped by her boyfriend of twelve years, Susanna does feel a sense of relief although everyone seems to be talking about her. Susanna knew that he was not THE one, but he was safe and comfortable and provided security that Susanna lacked while growing up.

The parts of the novel I found myself re-reading and taking a moment to think on were the ones in which Susanna ponders living her life according to God’s will and examining her choices to see if she is giving him an opportunity to work in her life. In sharing this with Nate I believe it opened both their eyes and hearts to following God’s plan for their lives and not being selfish but rather allowing their own desires to come second to those of the Lord.

am a huge fan of Rachel Hauck and Once Upon A Prince did not let me down. The American setting of St. Simon’s Island was pefect and such a contrast from the Prince’s home in (fictional)Brighton. This was a very well crafted and amusing, modern fairy tale. In order to have a fairy tale there must be a damsel in distress and if there is a damsel in distress there has to be a prince who rescues her. This fun little tale even has an odd fairy Godmother, of sorts, with Aurora. In this modern-day Cinderella story there is the typical romance problem. He is the king of (fictional) Brighton and the country has had a two hundred year old law that states the king cannot marry someone not born in Brighton. Will they find a way? Read it and find out. The book was delightful and I could not put it down once I picked it up. I found myself cheering for the young couple and their plights. I cannot wait to read the next Hauck book.

Once Upon a Prince is a sweet read and takes you on a fairytale ride, filled with all kinds of twists and turns! Susanna is in love and is sooo hoping for a proposal. Just when she thinks the proposal might happen, she is devastated to learn, after 12 years of friendship, a marriage proposal will NEVER happen. But, life does go on and slowly but surely, others are brought into our lives when we least expect it! This is where Susanna’s fairytale begins…

This book made me think so much about “Unanswered Prayers” … So many times, especially when we are young and in love, we pray the person we are “in LOVE” with, is, “The ONE!” More times than not, it doesn’t work out that way, and hearts are broken. But, as time goes by and we begin our new normal, we might just meet that special person when we LEAST EXPECT IT! Now then, we may never meet a “TRUE” Prince like Susanna has, but, you just never know right :)

I LOVED the story of Nate & Susanna and if you want a quick and cute Summer Read, this is the book for you!! Thank you Litfuse for allowing me this complimentary book in exchange for my honest review!

The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot was one of my favorite series when I was younger. I am calling Rachel Hauck’s Once Upon a Prince, The Princess Diaries for women. Every little girl dreams of being a princess at one point or another. We all want to be swept off of our feet by our own personal “prince”, and be whisked away to an enchanted castle. What I liked about this story was that it didn’t feel fake. Writers have the mountainous task of making their stories enjoyable as well as believable. I want to be able to relate to the characters while still escaping from everyday life. Rachel mixes the perfect amount of life and fantasy in Once Upon a Prince and I’d like to applaud her for a job well done.

The book’s prominent theme of surrendering one’s will and plans for the future to God even if it requires giving up a dream, a love or one’s pride was an outstanding choice by the author. The storyline was a mesh of The Princess Diaries with Christianity and the American South.

What a fun, well written modern day fairy tale. There is the American damsel in distress, the foreign prince who rescues her, and even a quirky fairy Godmother of sorts. There is tension because he is a real prince, from a country that forbids him marrying a foreign women. Both the prince and the damsel are Christians, so there is also submission to God’s will that plays in the story.
A delightful modern (Christian) fairy tale!
