Playing the Part (Bethany House, March 2016)

Can they accept who they are behind the parts they play in time to save the day?

Lucetta Plum is an actress on the rise in New York City, but is forced to abandon her starring role when a fan’s interest turns threatening. Lucetta’s widowed friend, Abigail Hart, is delighted at the opportunity to meddle in Lucetta’s life and promptly whisks her away to her grandson’s estate to hide out.

Bram Haverstein may appear to simply be a somewhat eccentric gentleman of means, but a mysterious career and a secret fascination with a certain actress mean there’s much more to him than society knows.

Lucetta, who has no interest in Abigail’s matchmaking machinations, has the best intentions of remaining cordial but coolly distant to Bram. But when she can’t ignore the strange and mysterious things going on in his house, it’ll take more than good intentions to keep her from trying to discover who Bram is behind the part he plays.

The plot is well thought out and the characters have a lot of depth. The idea is unique and felt new to me (rather than reading the same old romance again and again). Jen Turano’s best. The absolute best I’ve read from her so far, and the best in the series! It’s like she took her wittiness, humor, fluent writing, romanciness (totally a word!), and faith and tripled the awesomeness! The story line was fantastic, and Jen has once again hooked me from start to finish, leaving me aching for more. I can’t wait to see what she does next!

Playing the Part was such a great read! I could not put this book down and spent most of my weekend reading. Jen Turano wrote a very intriguing story with a bit of mystery, romance, comedy and just plain fun! A must read for the summer. The setting in early 1900’s which not my normal a favorite for my reading. With that being said I loved every minute of the setting and story.

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

I should preface this review by saying that I am not a girl who enjoys mystery books, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wouldn’t necessarily qualify it as a mystery book because the history and the humor definitely was the main focus. However, there was some mystery but only enough to make the story so incredibly hard to put down. I found myself looking for excuses to be alone so that I could just read!

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’

The book is filled with the same humor that her previous books have all had. The main characters were full of life, quirky, and entertaining. I liked all of the secondary characters as well. They really rounded out the story and give a glimpse into people from the previous books. The positives were also a bit of a negative, if that is possible. The plot lines were all over the place and several of the parts of the story seemed to be unnecessary or over the top. Overall, this wasn’t my favorite book in the series, but I did enjoy it.

Playing the Part is pure delight – crazy good, really – and it leaves me asking myself why I haven’t discovered Jen Turano’s writing before now. Witty, charming, filled with memorable characters and a vivid sense of place. Complex characters, romance, and danger all combine in this relationship-driven story. Readers will appreciate the theme of being the person we were created to be and not trying to live up to the expectations of others. We also see spiritual themes of forgiveness, second chances, and using our talents and abilities to help those in need. Highly recommended.

  • VERY FAST PACED BUT HUMOROUS!

This book is full of humor and is fast paced with lots of characters. Sometimes it did seem to get a little overwhelming and move so fast that the characters and the plot seemed a little over the top, unrealistic and hard to follow.

Playing the Part has a great balance of romance, mystery, and humor. The author did a great job bringing the eccentric characters to life and it was hard not to fall in love with all the characters (well except for Silas and Nigel). • ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

It’s just the cutest book. It takes your typical boy rescues girl love story and turns it on it’s side by having the girl very much not want to be rescued.

Lucetta is an interesting heroine. She’s an independent woman of means, who chooses to be an actress because she’s good at it, and she enjoys it. When she finds herself in trouble, a friend takes her to a relative’s house to hide. Only… the “house” is a castle, and the relative is a man with an over-active hero gene. He rescues animals. He rescues people. And now, he appears to want to rescue her.

Give Playing the Part an audition. I’m sure you’ll be nominating it for Adorable Story, as well.

Lucetta must escape her life for a bit when there is a fan who becomes too intense and her friend takes her to her grandson’s home. Bram is not who Lucetta expected and thought he was at first. This just adds to the story complete with individuals at his home whom are a little odd and of course funny! Throw in suspense and this story is a winner!

  • A WONDERFUL BOOK!

Playing the Part by Jen Turano took a couple of chapters for me to really engage the characters and the story. The thing that kept me reading was that I grew up in upstate New York and I’ve been to Tarrytown. I’ve frequently regretted not visiting Sleepy Hollow while I lived there, and this novel made me regret it even more after our leading lady visited the cemetery there. But that’s what kept me reading long enough to get to the funny moments and the engaging storyline.

I will be reading more by Jen since I really enjoyed all of the characters. They are all quite entertaining. This was an easy read. I think it would be just the remedy after reading a really heavy book. That’s when you need to have a laugh and this book fits the bill.

  • BOOK REVIEW – ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

This novel combines historical fiction, romance, Christian fiction, and humor in a unique way. This is the first novel I’ve read by Jen Turano, and I don’t know if this style is representative of her other books as well. I enjoyed it. It was different and fun!

Playing the Part can easily be read as a stand-alone title, but after reading this one, you will most definitely want to read the others. This book had the perfect mix of humor, wit, romance, and mystery.

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

Overall, this is a fun filled read, that kept a smile on my face, and was full of humor. I liked the mystery and many surprises along the way. Lucetta is a strong woman who knows how to do for herself, but she learns to trust God with the unknown, and that isn’t the only one who isn’t what first impressions may suggest. A fast paced read that I didn’t want to put down! I think one of my favorite parts was that it brought Harriet, Millie and Lucetta all together again. A fun adventure filled read that will put a smile to your lips.

  • MYSTERY, ROMANCE, AND LIGHT-HEARTED FUN

At first, I didn’t like Lucetta or her male counterpart, Bram. After a few chapters, though, I realized that the whole setup was really more of a poking-fun style by Turano. That allowed me to enjoy the rest of the story. The side characters were dimensional enough to carry the tale on their own. I even liked Geoffrey the goat, who had a strong dislike for women in dresses. Beneath all of this lies a more meaningful message, though, and that’s what really makes Playing the Part shine.

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’

I have loved Jen Turano’s writing since her debut novel a little over three years ago, and she keeps delighting readers with her endearing characters and witty prose. Playing the Part is the third and final book in her latest series about three friends who have been taken under the wing of the widowed Abigail Hart. […] Turano once again blends humor, intrigue, and romance in her unique style, resulting in a charming can’t-put-it-down read….

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

Abigail Hart strikes again! In Jen Turano’s third novel in A Class of Their Own, Abigail can’t resist the opportunity to matchmake for another young friend, actress Lucetta Plum – who happens to have no interest in finding a man – and a delightful and humorous romance ensues. Playing the Part offers a read perfect for any of Turano’s fans. It’s highly entertaining, charming, and sweet, and I easily recommend it.

  • GREAT READ

Author Jen Turano has given us another great book to read. Lucetta Plum is an actress and she loves it. Everything is going along okay until someone seems to have more than a little ideas about her. Her friend Abigail decides that she would be safe at her grandson’s house. When she gets there she starts to see Bram Haverstein who is her in a different light. Abigail is very happy to show them that she thinks that they would be a great match. The problem is that Lucetta wants no part of her ideas. I give this book a 4/5 and all of these are my opinions.

  • ONE OF MY FAVORITE NOVELS FROM JEN TURANO! DON’T KNOW WHEN I HAVE LAUGHED SO MUCH!

This is such a great novel from the perspective of looking for something with a flair for humor amid a bit of mystery and of course romance in the end. I was laughing at some of the downright funny things that Miss Plum was able to pull off using her reputable acting talents and poor Mr. Haverstein who is in love with Miss Plum and even more so when he get to know the real her behind all the parts she plays. This one is a hands down 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and now I can’t wait to go back and discover the previous novels of Jen’s involving her best friends who we meet up with in this one.

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

    Pre Teens- One Star
    New Teens- One Star
Early High School Teens- Three Stars
Older High School Teens- Four Stars
    My personal Rating- Four Stars

Ahhh. Just like every other novel written by Jen Turano, Playing the Part was very witty and cute. This one is very bittersweet, though, (like “A Match of Wits”) having to say goodbye to these funny and loving characters. (How do y’all authors do this?!) I really liked Lucetta, she was perfectly written in that calm, cool & collected air you would expect her to have. Bram was sweet and caring, like all the other heroes in this author’s other books. I saw the plot twist coming and man, I was so excited about it! The ending was great and I loved seeing characters from the previous books in this series come back.

Truth be told, I’m rounding to four stars, but I really wish there was more Spiritual Content. Hopefully, her future books will have more.

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’ – JEN TURANO

Who does not need a little more humor in their life? From cannonballs hurtling through the air to goats chasing petticoats from the turret, Jen’s novel had me chuckling. I would not call this a humorous novel, and yet she is able to present her characters and incidents in a comical way. All of the characters have enough flaws that the reader is easily able to identify and sympathize with them, and enough redeemable qualities for us to love them. Lucetta Plum is an actress by trade. As she learns who she really is when she is not playing a part, I found myself wondering how often do I or my friends play a part? Who are we really? This is a good thought to question.

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’: A CLASS OF THEIR OWN

Ahhh, and that, mundane pleasantness is what we shouldn’t expect either from Jen Turano’s Playing the Part, book 3 of Class of Their Own! Playing the Part is not at all mundane. It is hilarious in many ways, from being shot at (or at least your horses), to being thrown into a moat, not once, but twice, and cannons firing at you, and not to mention illicit activities and a strange mausoleum and graveyards! Definitely did not see that coming!

I always look forward to reading Jen Turano’s latest book and was thrilled to have a chance to review Playing the Part. I just hope I can do this wonderful book justice!

The third book in Turano’s A Class of Their Own series, Playing the Part features popular actress Lucetta Plum who finds herself forced to flee New York because of a man determined to make her his own – with or without marriage vows. Disguised and under cover of night, Lucetta and her dear friend Abigail Hart travel to the estate of Abigail’s grandson Bram. That my friend is where the adventure and hilarity really begins!

  • ENTERTAINING STORY

Jen Turano’s Playing the Part is an entertaining story where you just never know what will happen next.

Everything — from the characters to the setting to the plot of the story — is engaging and often unexpected. Practically all the characters have secrets or hidden stories that come out in unexpected and very often humorous ways.

  • A GOOD BOOK

This was a fun book to read as was the whole series. It is not only full of historical fiction but a bit of humor as well. Not to mention there is a bit of mystery and action which only adds to this story for me. I thought the story was well written and the characters well developed. It was nice to see characters from the first two books make an appearance. The author did a good job in wrapping this story up in the end. All in all I thought this was an enjoyable book.

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

Jen Turano is the well known author of many novels set in the Gilded Age and her newest one is titled Playing the Part. It is an entertaining tale full of the quirky characters Turano has come to be recognized for.

Turano really gives us a charming story with characters that pop and situations you will just have to laugh at. I had my family looking at me wondering what in the world was going on while I was reading this novel. It is full of humor but also the reminder that we don’t have to do everything on our own and it is okay to ask for help. A wonderful book as always with a definite 5 star rating!

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’

Two chapters into this book and the main character is already on the run from men. A few men! It’s both hilarious and dangerous for Lucetta Plum’s livelihood! Her stepfather’s gambled her away after trying to hand over her mother’s home, while the owner of her current residence, Ms. Hart (a beloved friend) continuously tries to ‘hook her up’ with eligible bachelors! All Lucetta wants is to be on stage with her fellow performers and stay a woman of her own right. So to stay in control, she leaves New York.

This story, from beginning to end, is a wile ride! It’s exciting, funny, mysterious and just plain good!

  • ‘PLAYING THE PART’

I was lucky enough to have been chosen to be a reviewer of Jen Turano’s book, Playing the Part. I am a fan of all things from the 19th century. I started this book with a sort of ho-hum attitude. However the story developed into one of the most entertaining novels I have read. I actually laughed out loud at a couple of points in the story. This book was not only interesting, but highly amusing. I thought that it was delightful. The goings-on are uproariously funny and kept me reading just to see what would happen next. I think you will really enjoy this delightful book. I especially enjoyed the surprise ending. I would like to thank LitFuse Publicity for free pint copy in return for my honest review.

  • BOOK REVIEW: ‘PLAYING THE PART’ BY JEN TURANO

This was a classic Jen Turano novel. The thing I liked about this one, though, was that the gentlemen was eccentric as well. It was fun to get to know Bram and all his craziness/sweetness.

While I loved all the characters (seriously, I get a goofy smile on my face and my family looks at me like I’m crazy) something fell a little flat, but I can’t put my finger on what it was. Lucetta was a good strong practical character, and I’ve already said how much I liked Bram, but for some reason they never really meshed well for me. Maybe it was because of his original opinion of her, but since I enjoyed that aspect of his really getting to know the real her, I’m not sure.

This wasn’t my favorite from this author, but I did enjoy it, and I will reread it.
