New from Abingdon Press’ Quilts of Love series | Hidden in the Stars

A quilt holds the secret to a killer still at large—and who his next victim will be.

Following an attack that killed her mother and stole her ability to speak, 21‑year‑old Sophia Montgomery has no choice but to accept her estranged grandmother’s offer to return to their family home. Although detective Julian Frazier is working hard on the case, Sophia unknowingly frustrates him because her inability to speak thwarts her eyewitness evidence. The fact that Julian is undeniably attracted to Sophia doesn’t help either, so Julian hides his feelings as concern for a trauma victim and focuses instead on finding the killer.

Little do they know, the clues to solving the case may be right in front of them, displayed in Sophia’s mother’s “special” quilt design. Who will realize the secret Sophia’s unwittingly been hiding in plain sight? When the truth comes to light, will Sophia find her voice again? Or will the murderer—still at large—silence her forever?

Press Release

Dealing with the loss of a dream

Robin Caroll’s new book tells of a young athlete robbed of everything she holds dear

Seattle: Where do you turn when a dream you’ve cherished in your heart for your entire life is completely shattered? In her new release, Hidden in the Stars (Quilts of Love series from Abingdon Press/September 16, 2014/ISBN:9781426773600/$13.99), Robin Caroll introduces us to a young woman who must find the strength to continue living after losing everything she cares about.

At 21 years old, Sophia Montgomery has been working toward the goal of becoming an Olympic gymnast since she was a young girl, but everything changes one night when she is attacked in her mother’s home. Her attacker leaves her with career-ending injuries and the inability to speak. Most tragically, he snuffs out her beloved mother’s life. Reeling from the loss of her mother and her dreams, Sophia has no choice but to accept her estranged grandmother’s invitation to come and live in their family home.

Sophia’s sense of self has always been wrapped up in her goals and aspirations, so now she is left wondering just who she is. “So often we begin to believe our dreams define who we are,” Caroll says. “What we do becomes our identifier. I wanted to portray a character who had worked hard for something all her life, something her mother, who had once held a prestigious role in the Russian ballet, had sacrificed much to help her attain, yet she had it snatched away with no hope of reclaiming it. I think we (myself included) sometimes need to realize we are, first and foremost, a child of God and not a dream or a goal.”

Meanwhile, the killer is still on the loose, and detective Julian Frazier is hard at work trying to crack the case. Julian goes back and forth between being attracted to and frustrated by Sophia, who is young, beautiful and afraid, but who can’t offer much to the case due to the loss of her voice. Caroll admits the injury was written as a thinly veiled metaphor. “When we’re attacked, physically, mentally or spiritually, we often feel we aren’t heard . . . that our cries for help fall on deaf ears.”

Detective Frazier is forced to hide his feelings as mere concern for a trauma victim and turns his laser focus on finding the killer. Little do they know, though, that the key to solving the case might be right in front of them, displayed in Sophia’s mother’s special quilt, made from some of her most exquisite ballet costumes. Who will finally realize the secret Sophia’s unwittingly been hiding in plain sight? When the truth comes to light, will Sophia find her voice again? Or will the murderer — still at large — silence her forever?

Caroll hopes readers of Hidden in the Stars will not only be entertained by this murder mystery, threaded with themes of family ties and sacrifice, but that they will also walk away from the book reminded that what others might mean for evil in our lives, God can use for good.

About the Quilts of Love Series

The premise of theQuilts of Love series is that quilts tell stories of love and loss, hope and faith, tradition and new beginnings. The series focuses on the women who quilted all of these things into their family history. Featuring contemporary and historical romances, as well as Amish fiction, women’s fiction and the occasional light mystery, readers are drawn into the endearing characters and touched by their stories.

A special tradition the Quilts of Love authors have instituted with each release is the donation of a quilt to their chosen charity or individual in need. Robin Caroll will be giving her quilt to the Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute. For more than 35 years, CARTI has been bringing the fight to cancer with leading edge technology and compassionate hearts, offering comprehensive cancer treatments to patients throughout Arkansas. As the largest private cancer clinic in Arkansas, CARTI provides a wide range of services that treat more than just cancer, believing very strongly in caring for the patient as a whole – including the physical, emotional and financial well-being of each patient.

CARTI will be accepting the quilt to auction in their annual fundraiser, Festival of Trees. “I chose CARTI because my mother-in-law was under their care during her battle with cancer, and they were such a blessing to my husband’s family during such an emotional time,” Caroll explains. “The appreciation for how CARTI stepped in and oversaw everything and assisted the family will never be forgotten.”

  • NOT FOR THE CASUAL READER

This isn’t a “quick” read, but rather, the story is slowly drawn out, drawing the reader into a story of intrigue and two people discovering love in all the oddest places.

  • This is the best book in this series that I’ve read so far. It was full of suspense, and I couldn’t put it down. The mystery surrounding the brutal attack of Sophia Montgomery and the death of her mother unravels throughout the entire book. This isn’t a book where you know halfway through how it will end. There are twists and turns throughout. When Detective Julian Frazier comes in to solve the case, the romantic tension between Sophia and him is palpable. Again, though, it isn’t a fluffy resolution halfway through the book. The characters in this book are very well developed, and the story is intense and funny and romantic and mysterious all at the same time. I couldn’t put it down. Every time I got to the end of a chapter and thought “Now, I can go to bed…” I was wrong. I had to find out

  • HIDDEN IN THE STARS

If you look back at many of the books I have reviewed, you will see several in the Quilts of Love series featuring various authors and varied genres. All of them have been amazing, but Robin Caroll’s Hidden in The Stars is one of my favorites so far. She is a veteran romantic suspense author, and has written an awesome mystery exploring family secrets and lost dreams. If you like suspense books, you will find this to be a quick read. I honestly could not put it down at all.

I recommend Hidden in The Stars to anyone looking for a well-written mystery with the perfect balance of suspense and romance.

  • SUSPENSEFUL “WHO DONE IT”

The characters are very succinctly and nicely depicted, the plot is strong and fluid, and the attention to detail that Robin deftly worked in was very well done. It was a book that kept my attention!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was different from the other Quilts of Love books I have read in that it was a suspense and the fact that it was about ballet and gymnastics. I wondered what in the world ballet/gymnastics had to do with quilting, but was happily surprised with the connection that was made.

The story was not only suspenseful, but at time amusing and it definitely drew me in. I would definitely recommend this read to a friend!!

  • GREAT READ

This book is a bit different than many of the Quilts of Love books. It takes quite a while to get to the actual quilt part of the book. The beginning strongly focuses on Sophia and her attack, her inability to speak….there is a definite mystery in this story and it is really rather sinister.

I have mentioned before that I am in love with the Quilts of Love series and this one does not disappoint me. I loved learning more about her mother and her ballet career with Sophia. Getting to know the hard nosed Julian was so much fun as well. And of course throw in the mystery of solving the who dun it murder and trying to guess how the author is going to end the book make this a wonderful read that you simply cannot put down.

Stars, ballet shoes and balance beams dreams. These are set in the quilts of this mystery.

No one seems to be able to tell Detective Frazier what those thugs had been after. They destroyed the house and everything in it trying to find something. The only thing that remained unharmed was the quilt made up of bits of all her mother’s ballet costumes. Little did they know the importance of that quilt.

  • ROLLER COASTER OF EMOTION

Hidden in the Stars packs a powerful punch in a relatively short number of pages! The premise is incredibly sad—Sophia left completely alone, injured, without the ability to speak after being brutally attacked in her mother’s home. However, the author does a great job bringing people along to help push the story forward, solve the crime, and befriend Sophia. Sophia’s trust in the Lord is refreshing, and her friendships with Charlie and Julian are an uplifting part of the story.

This book was emotional, intense, sweet, and a true roller coaster. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I will definitely be looking up more of Robin Caroll’s books in the future.

Hidden in the Stars was not what I expected to find opening this Quilts of Love book. It was so much more. • HIDDEN IN THE STARS

Once again, with the Quilts of Love series, I love how the quilt theme was brought into this story. (I wish the quilt on the book cover looked more like I imagined the quilt in the story to look.)

Such a great mystery! The fact that not only is there the current suspense of the attack and murder… but also the mystery of the past story between Sophia’s mother and grandmother… really created amazing twists in this book.

I really would love to know what happened next with Sophia. Where does her life take her as she heals? What happens with her gymnast career? And, while the story had a tiny bit of the attraction between Sophia and Julian… what happens with them next?

  • QUILTS OF LOVE: HIDDEN IN THE STARS

This is one of the best books I’ve read in the Quilts of Love series, due in large part to the fact that it wasn’t just another love story that somehow involved a quilt. Hidden in the Stars is full of mystery, suspense and Russian mobs. It grabbed my attention from the first page and help onto it tightly until I closed the book. While there was a bit of romance to the story, that wasn’t the focus of it, it just happened to be there. I really enjoyed this story and felt myself really connecting with the main character, Sophia, on her journey of discovering the truth. The author wrote a beautiful story that is sure to keep the reader engaged from cover to cover.

  • A GREAT BOOK

I enjoyed this book much more than the other book in the series. They were both enjoyable, but I felt I connected more with this one somehow. Even though it’s not a long book, I was able to really embrace the characters, to feel their pain and their sorrow. It is a mystery, and who doesn’t love a good whodoneit? Sophia, the main character, is so unbelievable strong, and her faith is inspiring, yet realistic. Julian has a more difficult time, and in his job, he sees the yuckiness, darkness, and pain in this world. There were enough bends in the road of this story to keep me guessing. Oh, and how could I not enjoy it – there’s a ballerina on the front cover!?! :)Really, it’s a great book to check out.

  • REVIEW: HIDDEN IN THE STARS BY ROBIN CAROLL

What a suspenseful book! It starts out with an intense scene and doesn’t slow down. I admired the tenacity and grit of Sophia, who does her best to help with the investigation even though she’s suffering from her injuries and grief. Her inability to speak and use of a lip-reading interpreter was a unique and interesting angle. Julian is a fabulous hero, and I loved the scenes with him and Sophia together. The grandmother brought forward information Sophia never knew about her mother’s past, and it was sad that the desire for success and prestige over love tore apart relationships. Woven throughout is Sophia’s personal spiritual journey as she turns to God to help her find new purpose in her life.

  • HIDDEN IN THE STARS ~ ROBIN CARROLL (QUILTS OF LOVE SERIES)

This book is part of the Quilts of Love Series and is my favorite so far. This is a murder/mystery that you will not be able to put down. I started one afternoon and couldn’t stop reading until I was finished. From page one to the end, this is a page turning thriller.

  • KIND OF BOOK THAT WAS HARD TO TAKE A BREAK UNTIL YOU FINISHED

This book is part of the Quilts of Love Series. It is a mystery more than a romance, though. It was the kind of book that was hard to take a break until you finished it and found out what had really happened. I have loved all of the books in this series and this is a favorite. The book has a lot wonderful strong characters and the story was intriguing from the first page. I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book by Litfuse Publicity Group and all opinions are my own.

  • HIDDEN IN THE STARS

Hidden in the Stars was a sweet little treat for this book addict. At just over 200 pages it was just the right length to get me back in the game. Happily I can say Robin used those pages wisely and crafted a suspense-filled yet tender love story that I liked. It was interesting to read a story where the main character communicated through a lip reader since her injuries limited her. I thought it was a tad awkward for a romance, but the ending of the story wasn’t completely over-the-top, so it ended up working for me.

  • EXCITING SUSPENSE FROM ROBIN CAROLL

The somewhat pastel colors of the cover of Hidden in the Stars might trick the reader into thinking this novel is just a sweet romance. Never fear! Robin has woven her usual brilliant suspenseful mystery complete with some dastardly characters in which a quilt plays a major role. And let’s not forget the romance. Sparks fly between Sophia, victim of a brutal attack that killed her mother and investigating detective Julian. Although both of them feel a strong attraction, they decide it is just a reaction resulting from the aftermath of such a devastating crime. Could it be true love?

  • HIDDEN IN THE STARS

To my surprise HIDDEN IN THE STARS wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought. It was written more in the style of the NCIS investigative television shows that used to be on TV (not sure if they still are. We don’t have a TV.) Julian and his partner, Brody, are trying to solve the murder of a Russian ballet princess Nina and the extensive damage to her daughter, Sophia, ruining her dreams of competing in the Olympics.

  • “HIDDEN IN THE STARS” BY ROBIN CAROLL

I really enjoyed this book and while it was different from Miss Robin Caroll’s pre-teen books, “Samantha Sanderson at the Movies” and “Samantha Sanderson On the Scene”, there were parts I could tell were written by the same author. “Hidden in the Stars” has a really interknit plot; and since the back of the book says about the murder, I was able to prepare myself for any parts of that. It had humor sprinkled in and it was a very good suspense book. It’s tied with “Rival Hearts” for being my favorite “Quilts of Love” book.

  • HIDDEN IN THE STARS BY ROBIN CAROLL, © 2014 ~ A QUILTS OF LOVE STORY

As the story progresses leads are slim until Sophia’s mother’s memory quilt is explored. Author Robin Caroll has displayed the crime scene step-by-step as the detectives, aided by Sophia’s lip reader, Charlie, move forward in a case with hidden clues to be exposed. Charlie was my favorite character with her compassion and interest in helping Sophia.

  • BOOK REVIEW: HIDDEN IN THE STARS

Abingdon has a long list of books in their Quilts of Love series featuring various authors and varied genres. I have read and reviewed several, but Robin Caroll’s Hidden in The Stars is my favorite so far. A veteran romantic suspense author, Caroll has written a taut mystery exploring family secrets and lost dreams. A quick read, I recommend Hidden in The Stars to anyone looking for a well-written mystery with the perfect balance of suspense and romance.

  • HIDDEN IN THE STARS – GIVEAWAY!

Robin Caroll is one of my favorite suspense authors so I was excited to discover she was writing one of Abingdon’s Quilts of Love novels. Hidden in the Stars is a little different from her usual books but just as captivating. The brutal attack that destroyed Sophia’s gymnastic career in addition to taking her mother’s life broke my heart and immediately endeared her to me. . . .

In Hidden in the Stars, Robin Caroll tells a story that kept me intrigued from beginning to end. With mystery, suspense, romance and a quilt that holds the answers, this fast-paced story of love, sacrifice and faith is highly enjoyable and quick to read. I recommend it.

  • QUILTS OF LOVE | HIDDEN IN THE STARS – $200 GIVEAWAY & “FALL INTO FALL” FACEBOOK PARTY!

“Hidden in the Stars” by Robin Caroll is the second book that I’ve read in the “Quilts of Love” series. They are all stand alone books but they all have a theme that “Every Quilt Has A Story”.

I enjoyed this book that followed Olympic hopeful gymnast Sophia and Detective Julian as they work side by side to piece (like my quilt pun?) together the events leading up to, and after her violent attack.

The story line kept my interest and I liked the suspense part of it. “Could a quilt hold the secret to a serial killer?” Great story! Clean christian fiction with romance, suspense, and the power of forgiveness.

  • REVIEW – HIDDEN IN THE STARS

Hidden in the Stars is not your typical Quilts of Love book. This story has a murder mystery plot that is entwined with a quilt in a very unique way. I won’t go into in other details, as I don’t’ want to spoil it for other readers. Don’t let the 224 page length fool you, as the books is well-written and has a tight-knit plot that is more intriguing that novels twice as long. Overall, Hidden in the Stars is a fantastic novel from start to finish. I’m not familiar with author, Robin Caroll, but I’ll have to look for her other titles.

  • QUILT SOLVES THE CRIME!

I read one previously and was happy to check out another one when I got the opportunity. I was excited to start reading Hidden in the Stars: Quilts of Love Series by Robin Caroll. I enjoyed it and read it in less than 24 hours. I might have stayed up until 2 am reading it the first night because it jumps right into the action and is hard to put down. It has great writing that has you directly relating to the characters and wanting to see the best results for them. I know that I will have to search out other books by this author because I know that if the characters and plot are even half as interesting as the ones in this book, I will be hooked. Consider yourself warned!

  • BOOK REVIEW: HIDDEN IN THE STARS

I couldn’t put this book down. I tossed it into my backpack on errand day, knowing I would bit sitting around during oil changes and tire changes. Once I started reading it, I actually wished these things took longer than they did! Sophia’s strength during such a horrible time drew me in and the way that Julian and Charlie come to her aid, far beyond what their job entailed, made me feel a spark of hope for humanity. Even if you’re not a fan of quilting, I can’t see how you can’t be a fan of this book.

This book grabbed me in the first chapter. I honestly couldn’t wait to find out the mystery. I’m usually not a big mystery genre fan but Carroll weaved a fantastic tale and I was hooked! Sophia was such a fantastic character – strong, independent and faith-filled. She was inspiring with all she goes through and how she handles it all. I would love to see another book with these characters – perhaps the next chapter of Sophia’s life since it has drastically changed.

I really enjoyed the mystery and intrigue of this book. The main characters were interesting and well rounded. • ANOTHER GREAT QUILTS OF LOVE STORY

This was a really sad story to read because Sophia had no idea how many lies her mother had told her all her life. She didn’t know she had a grandmother until her mother was killed and then to find out in the end that what killed her was something really dumb that she had been doing for years. And then it finally caught up with her.

But, while this story is tragic and sad for Sophie, in the end, she will find something more precious and lasting.

If you love reading mysteries that also include a romance, then you will love this book. I have been reading all the Quilts of Love books and if you have too, then you will love reading this one also, because just like all the others, this one is a classic to treasure!

  • READ THIS BOOK!

I loved this book. I dropped my daughter off at youth group, sat in my car and read the entire thing, from cover to cover. The story is gripping and the characters are wonderful. I thought the mystery was well developed and although I could piece together who the bad guy was before the end, there was still a twist in the story that left me reading as fast as I could.
Sophia, the main character, is believably sweet and innocent, while being tough enough to withstand what has happened to her. Julian is the typical tough cop with a heart of gold. I love the story between the two of them and the way that Sophia’s faith in God is woven through the entire book.

  • A ROLLER COASTER RIDE OF TRUE SUSPENSE!!!

Robin Caroll’s name is synonymous with Christian suspense and if you have ever read any of her novels you know just what I mean. For those of you that haven’t and love a great novel that literally will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next proverbial shoe to drop, you might want to check her out. She is also the latest author contributing her writing talents to the Quilts of Love Series, in her addition, Hidden in the Stars. Even though these are all part of an ongoing series, they are truly stand alone novels and can be read in any order, but what a way of introducing readers into the talented writing styles of some great Christian authors.

Search my blog and you’ll see that I’ve had great fun reading the books in the Quilts of Love series, and I’m so glad I was able to read Hidden in the Stars by Robin Caroll. I’ve not read her books before but after reading this one I’ll be sure to find more of her books because she was able to pull me in from the first chapter – it takes a lot to do that. I was immediately pulled into the life of Olympic bound gymnast, Sophia Montgomery as she is lying in a hospital bed after an attack on her and her mother in her mother’s house. Ofter we believe things in our past stay buried in our past and sometimes, they don’t……as is the case with Sophia and her mother and Sophia is left to grapple with the truth as she also struggles in recovering and knowing her career is over.

This is not your cozy quilt novel. The quilt holds the key to a murder rather than being a symbol of pleasant memories. I really liked the characters in this novel. If you are a ballet fan, you will like all the references to performances and roles. The romance was a bit quick for me and I would have liked an epilogue telling how Sophia handled her future.
