The Radical Book for Kids (New Growth Press, October 2016)

A kid-sized explorer’s guide to faith and life

The Radical Book for Kids is a fun-filled explorer’s guide to the Bible, church history, and life for boys and girls age 8 and up. Along with examining some of the most exciting realities in the universe, the handbook is vibrantly illustrated and chock-full of fun facts and ideas. Deep truths are communicated to elementary and middle-school aged kids while stimulating their curiosity and sense of adventure within a gospel-centered framework.

This power-packed book is “radical” in more ways than you might think! It is “radical” in the sense of the original meaning of the word, “going to the root or origin.” The Radical Book for Kids will take children on a fascinating journey into the ancient roots of the Christian faith. But it’s also “radical” in the more modern sense of being revolutionary. Kids read about men and women who learned to trust Jesus and stand for him—displaying radical faith—even when everything seemed against them.

But The Radical Book for Kids is also “radical”—meaning fun or cool—in the eyes of a child. Kids read about ancient weapons (and how to make one), learn about jewels, create pottery, discover ancient languages, use secret codes, locate stars, tell time using the sun, play a board game that’s 3,000 years old—and more.

Check out the table of contents, skip around, or read straight through. However a child chooses to explore it, The Radical Book for Kids will open new vistas for their imagination and help to make straight paths for their feet.

Radical spiritual depth, strength and fun for kids

Champ Thornton stimulates kids’ sense of adventure with gospel-centered new book

11/8/2016 || Seattle: What images does the term “radical faith” conjure? The Latin origin of the word “radical” literally means “roots.” Today the word also means extreme or revolutionary — even excellent or cool. With The Radical Book for Kids: Exploring the Roots and Shoots of Faith (New Growth Press/October 24, 2016/ISBN 9781942572718/$24.99), author Champ Thornton takes children deep into the ancient roots and origins of the Christian faith in both exciting and innovative ways.

Brilliantly illustrated and extremely kid-friendly, The Radical Book for Kids is an explorer’s guide to the Bible, church history and life, mixing practical and theological elements with fun activities such as a 3,000-year-old board game and a tutorial on how to make a (kid-safe) David-style slingshot. The hands-on approach will help kids grasp the Bible’s relevance for daily life and leave them with a curiosity driving them to learn more.

Chock-full of charts, design elements and illustrations that captivate and inspire, The Radical Book for Kids will have beginning, advanced and even I-don’t-like-to-read readers engrossed in engaging chapters covering important aspects of Christianity, such as:

—Biblical history
—Theology
—Fun facts
—Church history
—Daily Christian living
—Radical faith in the face of adversity
—Roots of the faith
—The lives of historical men and women of faith

The Radical Book for Kids will lead young readers to examine some of the most exciting realities in the universe and grapple with the deepest truths laid out in Scripture. “As parents, we all want what is best for the next generation, that they will love, trust and follow the Lord Jesus Christ,” Thornton shares. “So it’s my prayer that this book will be used by God to grow deep roots of faith in the children who read it.”

The book was designed for children ages 8 and up to explore on their own. However, it can be used in a myriad of ways: An adult can read it to a younger child, parents can incorporate it into family devotions, Sunday school and homeschool teachers can use it as a supplemental resource, and older teens and adults alike will enjoy and benefit from the wealth of information it holds.

“I want to scatter a packet of assorted seeds across the minds and hearts and imaginations of the next generation,” Thornton explains. “If this book makes children and teens (and adults) more curious and thirsty to know God and the good news of His Word, then it will have done its job.”

Advance Praise

The Radical Book for Kids is like an encyclopedia of Truth. Thornton has done something magical here. He’s taken every aspect of the Christian faith, the Word we love, and the character of God and made it accessible to children. It’s everything you’d hope to know and teach in one place, even including stories of historical figures. I’m thankful my kids are still young, so I can use this book to teach them about the roots of our faith. The Radical Book for Kids is radical indeed — radically helpful, radically good.”

~ Trillia Newbell, Author of Fear and Faith and United

The Radical Book for Kids is like packaging that awesome Sunday school teacher you remember in a book. You know, she was the amazing mom who made learning about God a ton of fun but did it with gospel truth that transformed lives. Every family should have a copy of The Radical Book for Kids on their bookshelf — better yet, put it out like a plate of cookies on the coffee table and watch your kids devour it. The most exciting part of all will be seeing your children grow in their passion for God and his Word.”

What a delightful book for children over eight years of age. It is full of not only Bible stories, but crafts, games and a ton of information about great figures in church history. It allowed my children, ages 8 and 10, to really learn about the foundational truths of the Bible in a way that was fun and at their developmental level. It will be a book we will use for much time to come. I love that even with all the information, and there is a lot, everything in the book points back to the importance of a relationship with Jesus Christ.

I very much enjoyed going through the book with my children and I highly recommend this book!

I give it a huge thumbs up!

When I received this book in the mail to review (Thank you, Litfuse!), Gigi immediately was drawn to it and snatched it up to start reading the first chapter. Things I look forward to going through with my kids are the glimpses at the lives of famous Christians like St. Augustine and Martin Luther, language tidbits and what things mean, basic apologetics, and why we do the things we do as Christians.

The goal of this book is to help children “grow deep roots of faith,” and I can’t think of anything I want more deeply for my kids than this, to know and love and experience the great love of “the radical Rescuer of rebels.”

This is a great resource for when you kids are starting to read the Bible themselves and they have questions. This book helps by addressing some of those questions in language that they can understand. A good quality book that will stand up to lots of handling. I wish I had had this book when I was homeschooling.

This book was an utter delight! I did not know what to expect but I can safely say that it exceeded all expectations . This book is a wonderful resource for younger kids as it presents church history in an informative and interesting way, I know I was utterly sucked into the book and found it to be really fun. I look forward to holding onto it for when my kids are older, this would be a great home schooling book for sure or just to have on hand.

The aim of the book is to look at the “ancient roots of our faith”. This book has a ton of content. It explores many different areas of knowledge from science to archeology. There is a section about how to read stories from the Bible and one about how to make a sling like David. It goes deep into numerous passages of the Bible and looks at martyrs of the faith. It is serious and studious but also at times really fun and silly. Above all it keeps the focus on Christ and your relationship with Him.

One thing we really love about this particular book, though, is that the information is presented in a way that makes sense for younger kids, and we are free to pull out some of our other resources to dig in a bit deeper. The 67 chapters in this book give us a good outline to cover many important topics.

The book flows easily moving the reader from section-section. For example, the first four chapters list the Bible, God, and the Good News! I like the cover because it shows an illustration of a boy and a girl and what I imagine to be the Tree of Knowledge. Knowledge of all the information the children can relate to. The primary medium used in the illustrations are drawings.

How many times a day you find yourself saying this phrase? Me personally? Too many to count. It’s one of those key mom phrases that comes in so handy when your child is asking for an explanation for absolutely everything. And for many questions- why do I have to clean my room? why can’t I have this? why can’t I do that?- it’s a very valid answer… but when it comes to questions of faith? I don’t WANT my children to believe just because I tell them to do so. I want to of course lay that foundation for them, but I want them to dig deeper and build upon that faith themselves.

How do I encourage this? I let them do their own digging! And for that, this book is a great place to start!

For me, it seemed to bring the Bible more to life. I think we can all be honest with ourselves that it can be a struggle to read the Bible sometimes and sift through some of the passages. I think having a companion book like this to help spark interest and conversation is a great way to get kids thinking beyond the words on the page.It had a great mix of all kinds of things from crafts to scripture to history to engage kids. I highly recommend this book!

From the very first chapter, I was impressed with the content. It’s very factual, but presented in a fun and understandable way. I love that it tackles theology issues with charts and graphs that make information easy to digest. For example, there’s a chart that draws parallels between the sacrifices of the Israelite people and the fulfillment of those sacrifices through Jesus’ death.

Aside from a few popular stories like Noah’s Ark or David and Goliath, the Bible is a fairly boring book to read. I’m saying that as someone who has actually read it cover to cover more than once (or twice). Genesis and Exodus are okay; Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy are a tough slug, and then there’s all the prophets bewailing Israel’s sins… A little background on the people and places of the Bible can help make it more accessible. The Radical Book for Kids provides that background, making the Bible relevant to the child’s world today.

This book is something of a handbook of the Christian faith for 8-14 year-old kids. With its large size and stunning production quality, it looks and feels like a coffee table book. But it’s the type of coffee table book that’s more fun than a homemade catapult. Kids and their parents won’t be able to keep their hands off it, nor would they want to. This book’s 67 short chapters cover a wide, and somewhat random, spectrum of topics ranging from character development to church history to science and theology to practical Christian living to Bible reading skills.

    SUPER IMPRESSED by this book.

The format of this book is super fun and colorful. The content is engaging, fun, and totally age-appropriate.

I love a lot of things about it, but one of the main ones is that it’s written from a perspective that’s missing from so many books I review for kids. Many of them are focused on good works without sharing the more important bigger picture of God’s love story and rescue plan for all creation! The gospel is not good advice. It’s good news.
