{More about Return To Me}

From the Acclaimed Author of Chronicles of the Kings

After decades of exile, the prophesies are coming true–King Cyrus has declared the Jews may return to Jerusalem. Iddo, a priest, is sure this is a sign of God’s renewed favor. For too long they’ve remained in Babylon, and many, including Iddo’s sons, are losing the faith that sets them apart. And so only a few choose to leave everything to return–return to their home and their God.

Nothing about their journey to the Promised Land is easy. As hardships mount, even the faithful, like Iddo’s beloved wife, Dinah, question the sacrifice of following God’s leading. Zechariah, Iddo’s oldest grandson, feels torn between his grandfather’s ancient beliefs and the family they left behind. But one life-changing encounter with the Holy One gives him insight that will change Zechariah–and history–forever.

Let me say that Lynn Austin is an incredible author! The journey back to Jerusalem from Babylon is told in Ezra, Nehemiah and Zechariah. Each of those books of The Bible have their own focus but they are covering the same time period. Ms. Austin has taken the task of running those books together to make a cohesive whole. Quite an undertaking that she does with incredible accuracy and realism. You feel what it is like to finally be released from Babylon and, for most of them, go to a city that they had never seen only heard of. Reading this book was somewhat similar to taking a time machine and going back to then. I felt that I met these people and was traveling with them. I got to know them, appreciate them and go through what they went through. Ms. Austin is a highly talented au

Better than any book I’ve ever read, Return to Me answers the question, “What was it like to live then?” Austin describes the fear, reservations, and confusion felt by the Israelites as they leave Babylon after a 70-year exile and return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple. Never have I thought that the Israelites might have any doubt about leaving the city of their long enslavement, nor that they might compare this prison term to the time they spent in Egypt, but Austin sets up a scenario where both happen – and makes it completely realistic and understandable.

I’ve always been a fan of biblical fiction when it’s done well, and Lynn’s prose, Scriptural authenticity, and storytelling ability combine to make her one of the best. This is an outstanding novel on many levels, one that will stay with me for a long time. God’s command of “Return to me” as shown in this book is so full of promise and assurance for us today. I highly recommend Return to Me to all readers.

I first fell in love with Biblical fiction when I devoured Lynn Austin’s Chronicles of the Kings series. Since that time Lynn Austin has remained one of my very favorite authors. While I’ve enjoyed her ventures into other genres, I’ve been eagerly awaiting her return to the time period that made me fall in love with historical Christian fiction. Austin’s latest release, Return to Me does not disappoint.

Underneath it all is the true love story of God for His people. The journey of each of the characters as they learn to fully rely on God’s promises for them is as relevant today as it was then.

This is about the third book I’ve read by Lynn Austin and I think I would say her style is “in depth”. She really does her research and gets the setting and time right. It adds so much to the story and especially historical stories like this I love feeling like I have a better understanding of what life was/could have been like back then.

This is the story of some of the exiles who returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple after the first one was destroyed. It’s at the end of Daniel’s life when the king of Babylon sees the hand writing on the wall and then his kingdom is overrun by the Medes and Persians.

I loved how she didn’t show the characters as perfect, but that they all had mistakes and slowly over time were able to overcome their doubts and live their lives.

I enjoyed this well-written, epic story about the Israelites rebuilding the temple. It was interesting to see the struggles they had, from hostile Samaritans to the physical labor to the temptation to compromise their beliefs so things would be easier. They had many of the same questions we do today, such as wondering why God let someone die or wondering what His purpose is for our lives.

Iddo and Zechariah were real people, a grandfather and grandson who both took seriously their family’s calling to serve their God in the role of priest. Return to Me is an intriguing look at what their lives might have been like, the kinds of joys and struggles they may have encountered as they followed that calling — sometimes with the support of their family, fellow priests, and friends; and sometimes all alone in their quest to turn a remnant of their fellow Jews back to true worship of the Almighty One. Mixing facts from the Biblical narrative with details from her own imagination, Lynn Austin offers an inspiring story of hope and restoration.

I’ve never read biblical fiction before but after reading Return to Me by Lynn Austin I really think I might start reading more biblical fiction. Lynn Austin did a wonderful job with this book. She had me hooked from the first chapter. I couldn’t wait to read what was going to happen next. With her rich descriptions and vivid imagery I felt like I was with Iddo and his family when the story was unfolding. I felt like I was part of the struggles of the Jewish people as they return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple. I never thought about the fact that even though the Jewish people were exiled to Babylon and grieved and longed for their return to Jerusalem, that many had become complacent. The Jewish people had been exiled to Babylon for 70 years. They wanted to stay. To remain with what was familiar to them. They were frightened of change. This book also made me want to dig deeper into my Bible and discover the story that novel is based upon. I give this story 4 stars. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy and engaging read.

I was absolutely blow away!!! This is the first book of Lynn’s that I have ever read and immediately after finishing it I went and added the entire Chronicles of the Kings series to my Amazon Christmas list!

This book is as deep as it is long–455 pages encompass the life of Zechariah from the time he is a young boy until he is a middle aged man. It flows along seamlessly and through it all you get to know the characters so well you can feel them as being real, not as just names on a page. I love how Lynn takes the truths of the Bible, the facts that we so easily forget sometimes, and really drives them home.

Return to Me by Lynn Austin is a powerful story. It is the first volume in a new series Restoration Chronicles. The book traces the story that begins in 539 BC when the prophet Daniel is summoned to read the message written on the wall for Babylonian King Belshazzar. The book sent me back to study the scriptures – Ezra, Zechariah, (a central character in the story) and 2 Chronicles. I found that the scripture and the prophecies are fascinating; but Austin’s account made them come alive. I also was struck by the themes of the Almighty One: “Walk with me”, “Return to me.” In addition to making the story live, Austin gives the reader a chance to understand how much God wants us to have a relationship with Him. This is a lengthy book, definitely worth taking the time to read. I recommend it.

If you’ve read my blog for any amount of time then you know that I’m a huge Lynn Austin fan. I don’t know of another author who has such a large library of books with so much diversity. Biblical fiction, Civil War fiction, contemporary fiction, WW II era fiction, and the list goes on. She releases one or two books a year and I’ve never been disappointed with any of them.
Return to Me is the first in a new series (The Restoration Chronicles) based on the prophets and their work in the Old Testament.

At the start of a speech he recently gave to the United Nations, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reminded us that Persia (now Iran) was once a friend to the Jewish people. “Some 2,500 years ago the great Persian king Cyrus ended the Babylonian exile of the Jewish people. He issued a famous edict in which he proclaimed the right of the Jews to return to the land of Israel and rebuild the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.” This excellent new novel by Lynn Austin is the story of the first group of exiles to make that return, as originally told in the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai and Zechariah.

This is a good start to a new series. It is kind of slow in some parts, but I understand the groundwork must be laid for future stories. I really liked the character of Zechariah with all his human faults and fears. I enjoyed the historical as well as many biblical references about this time in Jewish history. I found the story very interesting and look forward to the next book in the series. I would recommend this book, but be aware that it is over 450 pages long. Neither the reading nor the terminology is difficult, but this isn’t a story to be read in one sitting. This was my first time reading a Lynn Austin novel. I love to read fiction that tell the stories contained in the Bible in deeper detail. Lynn Austin has the gift of taking a story from the Bible and writing a book about it. In “Return to Me” she chose a story in the Old Testament that was set during the exile of the Israelites from the promise land to Babylon. Ask yourself how many times have you read this story in the Old Testament? How much of it did you retain? How much of it would you have liked to retain? Read “Return to Me” and the story will forever live in your heart.

King Cyrus has declared that the Jews, who have lived in exile in Babylon for decades, may return to Jerusalem. Iddo is very excited to be able to take his family home to Jerusalem. Iddo, and his wife Dinah, are heartbroken to be leaving their children and grandchildren behind, as only young Zechariah is going with them. The book covers their journey home to the Promised Land, and all the way through to the dedication of the temple. I love that the author directly quotes Scripture passages when the characters are reading, singing, or reciting the passages. In other places, the author has paraphrased the words of the Biblical characters, such as Zechariah and Haggai. Return to Me really brings the stories in the Bible to life. I have already recommended this book to my daughter.

Lynn Austin propels us into this biblical story without leaving anything out from her imagination: the Samaritans, the prophets, the sorceress, the fear, the faith, the hatred, the love, the greedy and the humble. And everything in between. Zechariah starts off as a young boy in the story but he leaves us a full grown man who has finally found his calling as a prophet revered by his peers and neighbors. We watch his dream come alive as his family is freed from slavery in order to rebuild God’s temple.

A compelling story that I would recommend for any reader of the bible who likes biblical and christian fiction. This story was so fascinating that I am perturbed I cannot find any news on the next book in the trilogy.

I’ve read one other novel by Lynn Austin and was very impressed with her writing. Return To Me is a biblical fiction piece by her and is the first installment in her new series The Restoration Chronicles. I found Austin’s writing to be rich in biblical, historical and cultural accuracy. Her description of surroundings, her characters’ thoughts and emotions to be vivid. As a reader, I felt I was there and a part of the story myself.
While as an avid reader, I can sometimes be skeptical of “biblical” fiction, Austin writes with a genuiness that makes me want to read her stories. In Return To Me, she makes the Old Testament come alive. I’m not equating what she has written with the revealed word of God in Scripture, but she has offered her readers a vivid picture: What if it happened this way? I felt that this was a love story between God and the Israelites who were given a chance to find their way back home. Daniel was part of the first group of exiles and he had lived so many years amongst the Babylonians that I could feel that it must have been very hard to rediscover what life was like before he went into exile. The Jewish people didn’t want people to mess with their way of life or cause them to go down the wrong path after they had come out of exile. I liked how the prophets’ words came alive to Daniel as he studied their words and I also learned a few Hebrew words and their meanings.

I could tell that a lot of research went into this story and I’m hoping to be able to read the other books in the series in the future.

Lynn Austin has crafted a masterpiece in the first book of what I expect to be an epic series.
If you believe the Old Testament is irrelevant and outdated, I encourage you to read this book.
If you desire to know more about your faith-family history, I encourage you to read this book.
If you are ready for an adventurous journey, back in time to the days of old, I encourage you to read this book.
Return to Me is more than a re-telling of an Old Testament story…it is an invitation to return to your own personal passion and desire for God and His Word.

This wasn’t a book that I could read fast it was one that I had to focus on and take my time. This book takes place during 539 BC and it brings part of the Old Testament to life. I really liked the fact that this book gives you a view of what it was like for the people that were living during that time.

The time and place and people of Return to Me are described richly, and I thought about them after I closed the book each day.

I was left thinking about what it would have been like to be a young woman like Yael who must decide whether to follow paganism or the God who gives her breath.

Or a young man like Zaki, born and trained for the priesthood; a recipient of great responsibility and
    stunning revelation.

Or an old woman given the chance to leave the city where the Jews were prisoners and return to the land God had given her people…but she must leave her children and grandchildren who are comfortable where they are.

Or an old man, who sees the hopes he has cherished all these years coming true and clearly hears God’s call “Return to Me.”

This is the first book I have read by Lynn Austin. I enjoyed her style of writing which was impressively descriptive. The author conveyed the characters emotions vividly. I felt the hurt and despair that the characters faced throughout their many ordeals and hardships as they leave the familiar comforts of Babylon for the promise and hope of their land, Israel.

I enjoy Biblical fiction and this lived up to my every expectation of a great read. It was intriguing and captivated my attention till the very last page.

I enjoyed the book so much that I have started to read Lynn Austin’s Chronicles of the Kings Series (5 book series). I have read through one book already and can’t wait to get my hands on the other books!

I received a complimentary copy of the above mentioned book in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.

I must admit that I didn’t know a lot about the Jew’s return from exile to Jerusalem. I’ve read the Biblical account, and I know all the basic details. But Austin brings this period in Biblical history to life with her engaging style of writing, draws you in to the people and places, and created a story that makes you feel as if it could have happened. While there are many character studies, it is easy to keep pace with the story. You will instantly be transported to a world and place where history was made every day. If you love Biblical history, then you will be amazed at the richness of this novel, it’s people, and the words by Austin that make it all happen. I do recommend this to mature readers only, because some of the themes in this novel portrays the behavior of the Babylonians and Samaritans of that time period and are not for young eyes.

I often read historical accounts in the Bible and don’t give much thought to what the people were actually experiencing. Austin brings to life the era of the Jews’ return from exile. We struggle with the leaders as they try to keep the people pure. We feel the temptation of the pagan ways. We realize the hardship the Jews experienced with Jerusalem and the temple destroyed. Austin’s book is what biblical fiction is all about.

What a great book! Lynn Austin has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I love how she can interest me in the story right from the start. The feeling and emotion she writes into her characters really makes you connect with them. This series is unique in that it fictionalizes the biblical account of the return of the exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem. I love how it helps me to identify with the human side of the characters from the Bible. They were people just like us with fears, worries, and dreams for the future.

Like many people, I tend to skip over large sections of the Old Testament—sections I deem too “boring” to spend my time on. So I’m very thankful for Return to Me, which brings the book of Ezra to life. At first, I was afraid I would have a hard time finishing this book (after all, it is 455 pages), and I did struggle to get into it at the beginning. But once the Jews began their journey to Jerusalem, I was hooked. After I finished the book, I even continued reading Ezra (Return to Me deals with events through Ezra 6) and looked up a timeline of Old Testament events. I appreciate that Return to Me gave me a bit of a kick in the pants—it reminded me that all of God’s Word is important and rekindled my interest in the Old Testament.

I think the author did a fantastic job in piecing this story together based on what information we have in the Bible. I loved it and rate it as 5 stars!

I really enjoyed Return To Me. The story is fiction but had many facts in it from the Bible. Lynn Austin wrote a wonderful story about this time in Biblical history. I found myself unable to put this novel down. Once I got into it, I was IN TO IT! I had a hard time in the beginning getting into it but after a few chapters the book really grabbed me. Lynn Austin writes with authority about historical Jerusalem and Babylon, the politics, the beliefs of all in that time, and the types of tribes and families. The characters were real people experiencing good and bad, some questioning their faith and finding their faith again. Lynn Austin weaves different themes throughout the book dealing with love, forgiveness and following the law instead of having a genuine relationship with the One true God. These themes are relevant today in all of our lives. The messages in this novel are profound. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, especially during biblical times. Lynn Austin brings these stories from the Bible alive in this novel. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series! I give this book ***** (5 stars).

This was a beautifully written book by Lynn, This is the first book I have read that she has written and I could not put it down!!! The detail that she added to it made the book all the more enjoyable and makes the Old Testament Biblical Truths come alive!
I HIGHLY recommend it for older readers because it does deal with some of the things that the Babylonians and Samaritans did at the time, which were not good to say the least.

I really like this book. It’s been almost a year since I’ve read the accounts in the Bible that this story is from but I could recall just about all of it while reading this! The writing style of Austin is very calm and rather predictable; which I enjoy! She gives enough detail in the portions where it something unpleasant has happened, or could happen, that you get an idea but it isn’t painted vividly.

Well-researched and beautifully written, Return to Me is a masterful retelling of Scripture. Austin has filled in the historical record with realistic fictional details, blending historical events and people with supporting characters that add a depth to the story. I found myself turning to Scripture to learn more — a sure sign of a successful Biblical novel. But more than just a story of the past, Return to Me spoke to me. I found myself looking at the apathy, fear, lack of commitment and indecision of the men and women of centuries past and identifying those things in my own life. Spiritual truth is never confined by space or time, and Austin adeptly portrays that for today’s reader.

    Highly Recommended.

I love to read the Bible and imagine what life was like for the people I read about, and it is so nice to have a fictionalized account help with the images. If you enjoy reading about history, Bible stories, and good fiction, this book is for you! It would make a wonderful selection for book clubs, and could be followed as each new book comes out.

Lynn writes strong, lyrical prose that pulls you right into the story.
This story begins with Iddo, his wife Dinah, and his children living in Babylon under the rule of King Cyrus. Zechariah, or Zeki’s childhood friend Yael’s mother has died. One day all of the men are summoned to King Cyrus who frees the Jewish people, telling them they could return to Jerusalem. Iddo’s prayers have been answered, however his sons are not thrilled and don’t want to leave. Their of the opinion that they have thriving businesses, why leave now they could go to Jerusalem later. Zechariah is in the position of choosing to go with his grandfather, Iddo, or stay with his parents, at the age of thirteen.

This book really showed how with a small bait from the devil we can be easily swayed. Highly recommended!

In “Return to Me,” Lynn Austin has tackled a unique time in Biblical history: the end of Israel’s exile in Babylon. When King Cyrus issued a decree that the Jews could return to their homeland and rebuild the temple, Iddo was thrilled. He had been just a boy when he was taken from Jerusalem. To go back to the Holy Land after years of pagan influence is everything Iddo he has ever dreamed of. But for those born in Babylon, it’s not such an easy decision.

As I read and after I finished this book, I looked up different things in the Bible to check for accuracy and context. I think it’s a win for Biblical fiction when it drivesyou to do this! I grasped a few things I hadn’t understood before, and I thank Lynn Austin for that.

Return to Me is enchanting, astounding, remarkable and radiant!

Do not feel intimidated by the 459 pages! Lynn Austin has given life to the old Testament books Ezra and Nehemiah where the Israelites are released from Babylon and travel back to Jerusalem in order to rebuild a temple for God and return to Him and His love.

Of course it’s all fiction. Yet, Austin has truly done a splendid job at digging deeper and making this story captivating for her readers.

I had been thinking that most pastors spend their time preaching from the new testament these days. This occurred to me when I was sharing an old testament story with my son and he had never heard of . I was so excited to read Return to Me by Author Lynn Austin. The author has put much research into her story and I just loved each and every page.

Return to Me is the first book in The Restoration Chronicles, a new series by Lynn Austin. Return to Me is a historically factual book that is the story of the books in the bible Ezra and Nehemiah.

The story is a book of hope when all others around are scorning and persecuting you. It reveals how hard it is to stand strong in your belief in God even in the bleakest times. It is a story of hope that God always has a better plan for you and for your life, no matter where your life may be today.

I am excited and look forward to reading the next novel in The Restoration Chronicles.

Return to Me is a fascinating history lesson told in fiction form. As usual, Lynn’s ability to create place is excellent, and her cast of characters, although large, is unique. She writes about a time period in Biblical history that is sometimes difficult to comprehend, but she unwraps these events in a way that brings the characters and setting to life.

This book was not what I expected, and honestly, it didn’t quite measure up to what I’ve come to expect from Lynn. However, I’m anxious to read the next book in the series. By the end, Lynn did a beautiful job of drawing me in, and I’m now rather intrigued by this time period and what she has to write about it. I DO RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, but read it with the understanding that this might be more of the “groundwork” book for the series.

From halfway through Part Two until the end of the story, the book was nearly impossible to put down. I read well into the night and the next morning before I was able to put the story down.
Truths from God’s Word that are found in this book are relevant to us today. Iddo stood firm in his faith, urging his fellow Jews to see the need to rebuild the temple even though the neighboring communities were against them. Following God is still not the popular thing to do, but it is the right thing to do and we can trust God when faced with the impossible, because with God all things are possible. The whole story focuses on having a genuine and real relationship with the one true God, finding Him through his Word, the Bible, and following Him faithfully paying attention to His voice.
